The Role Of Hospitality In Neurosurgery, Yosef M Dastagirzada, Howard L Weiner Jan 2026

The Role Of Hospitality In Neurosurgery, Yosef M Dastagirzada, Howard L Weiner

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: "Business, like life, is all about how you make people feel. It's that simple and it's that hard" says Danny Meyer, the restauranteur and CEO of the Union Square Hospitality Group in New York. Similarly, Maya Angelou famously said that people will never forget how you made them feel, though they may forget what you said or did. In neurosurgery, we are doing two things at once: something very technical and something very human. The core thesis of this hospitality philosophy is that whereas the technical aspect of our job is critically important, it represents 49% of our success. …

"Sing It Again": Linguistic Medievalisms In Geoffrey Hill And Seamus Heaney, Christian Cotten-Dixon Jan 2026

"Sing It Again": Linguistic Medievalisms In Geoffrey Hill And Seamus Heaney, Christian Cotten-Dixon

Honors College Theses

This study examines the use of early medieval structure and language in the poetry of Seamus Heaney and Geoffrey Hill, focusing on their near-contemporary collections, North and Mercian Hymns. Both collections use etymological and poetic structures to fashion an imagined medieval past in order to discuss personal and cultural narratives of history. Leveraging these structures in poetry and digging them out of past strata like a material artifact, Heaney and Hill collapse linear systems of time and language and access past word forms even as they evolve. This archaeological approach to poetry gives them the means to place the …

Public Functions And Private Resources, Zachary S. Price Jan 2026

Public Functions And Private Resources, Zachary S. Price

Faculty Scholarship

At the federal level, the boundary between public and private functions is under pressure. On top of longstanding trends toward privatizing government functions and running agencies like businesses, the second Trump administration has sought to enlist private resources more broadly for performing public functions. This Article for the Washington University Law Review’s symposium on “Taxing, Spending, and the Constitution” outlines constitutional principles for assessing such actions. Building on prior work, it explains that presidents may seek outside assistance in exercising “resource-independent” powers, meaning powers like the veto and pardon authorities that do not depend on congressionally authorized resources in …

Γ-Aminobutyric Acid Improves Gut-Brain Axis Function And Behavioral Adaptation In Broilers Under Low-Protein Diet, Randi Randi, Anisa Aulia, Muhtadin Muhtadin, Chusnul Hanim, Michael Kidd, Al Anas Muhsin Jan 2026

Γ-Aminobutyric Acid Improves Gut-Brain Axis Function And Behavioral Adaptation In Broilers Under Low-Protein Diet, Randi Randi, Anisa Aulia, Muhtadin Muhtadin, Chusnul Hanim, Michael Kidd, Al Anas Muhsin

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Low crude protein (CP) diets can improve feed efficiency and reduce ammonia emissions, but negative impacts on broiler productivity can occur. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) supplementation in low CP diets on productivity, enzyme activity, neuropeptidergic gene expression, and behavior of broilers. A total of 360 male Ross 308 broilers were used in a factorial design experiment with two CP levels (19.5 and 18.0%) and three GABA levels (0, 100, and 200 mg/kg). Dietary CP and GABA levels did not significantly affect broiler productivity (P>0.05). Reducing CP in the diet increased amylase and …

Push Dose Vasopressors For The Treatment Of Hypotension, Jennifer Ann Dailey Jan 2026

Push Dose Vasopressors For The Treatment Of Hypotension, Jennifer Ann Dailey

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Millions of Americans experience life-threatening hypotension. Prolonged hypotension results in acute kidney injury, myocardial injury, even cardiac arrest, and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality (Khanna et al., 2019; Schuurmans et al., 2024; Singer et al., 2022). Hypotension and its associated complications result in higher hospital costs (Keuffel et al., 2018). While there is a high incidence of hypotension among ICU patients, a smaller percentage of patients require vasopressor infusions regionally and nationally (Moin et al., 2025; Pollard et al., 2019). Local data from a community hospital within a North Texas suburb demonstrates a larger percentage of ICU patients …

The emergence and rapid adoption of digital health technologies (DHT) present unprecedented opportunities to democratize and reduce disparities in health care by monitoring health and disease at the point of care in all patients. However, limited access to DHT is becoming a major obstacle to realizing these goals. Access to DHT is influenced not only by well-recognized social determinants of health, but also by digital determinants of health, such as digital literacy and the need for broad access to digital infrastructure, as well as commercial and economic factors. Addressing these challenges and designing unbiased systems of care are essential to …

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Objectives: Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for severe obesity and associated metabolic comorbidities. Exposure to polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) before bariatric surgery may attenuate improvements in glucose metabolism and explain some of the heterogeneity in post-surgery outcomes.

Design: This is an observational cohort study.

Methods: Adolescents (n = 186) enrolled in the Teen-Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery study were included. Eight-PFAS congeners were measured in plasma before surgery. Linear and logistic regressions were used to examine cross-sectional associations between log2-transformed PFAS (ng/mL) and fasting glucose, insulin, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Linear mixed …

Purpose

To evaluate the reproducibility of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) measurements in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) using a 1.5-T MR-linac (MRI-guided linear accelerator) system.

Materials and Methods

In this retrospective study, conducted between February 2021 and January 2024, patients with HNSCC lesions underwent echo-planar imaging diffusion-weighted MRI on a 1.5-T MR-linac system at two time points before the start of radiation therapy. Mean and median ADC values and volumes were measured for each lesion. Absolute and percent reproducibility coefficients (RCs) were calculated. Linear regression analyses and F tests were performed to determine whether the lesion volume or …

Cognitive Validity In Listen-To-Write Summary Tasks: A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of Notetaking Data, Rebecca Yeager, Gomee Park, Junhee Park Jan 2026

Cognitive Validity In Listen-To-Write Summary Tasks: A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of Notetaking Data, Rebecca Yeager, Gomee Park, Junhee Park

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

This study examines the cognitive validity of a listen-to-summarize task on a university placement test. Cognitive validity is underinvestigated in listening assessment, especially for higher-order listening processes (Holzknecht et al., 2017; Rukthong, 2021). However, student notes from listening tests can record evidence of these processes (Yeager et al., 2024; Cushing, 1991). This study employed an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design to investigate the higher-order listening processes elicited by an integrated listen-to-summarize task. First, notes from two administrations of the same test form – one with notetaking scaffolding (n = 25) and one without (n = 25) – were analyzed qualitatively. Second, …
