Suppressing Saints And Suffering Sinners: An Analysis Of Reductive Tropes Through The 2025 Film Sinners, Kaila Palmer
Suppressing Saints And Suffering Sinners: An Analysis Of Reductive Tropes Through The 2025 Film Sinners, Kaila Palmer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Ryan Coogler’s 2025 horror film Sinners is set in a predominantly Black Mississippi community during the Jim Crow era and explores the vulnerability and hypervisibility of Black people. Vampires and Klansmen fixate on Black bodies, treating them as consumable and dispensable sources. Prior to its Amazon Prime debut and extended theatrical run, Sinners grossed over $300 million, signaling its cultural impact and contribution to reshaping representations of Black identity in cinema. As part of Coogler’s broader array of Black storytelling, the film disrupts entrenched stereotypes by emphasizing character depth rather than caricature.

Thinking Narratively About Science Of Reading Forces, Moral Injury, And Teacherhood, Kyle C. Arlington
Occasional Paper Series
Stories of teachers’ classroom lives shape the public imagination of what it means to be a “good teacher,” yet these narratives are always partial, contextual, and entangled with broader cultural and institutional forces. This research essay narratively explores the experiences of Lisa, a veteran literacy teacher navigating Science of Reading (SoR) mandates in her elementary classroom. It examines how her identities, values, and visions for literacy teaching intersect with the discursive, material, and affective dynamics that shape how SoR unfolds in the context of Lisa’s classroom life. (Re)storying her experiences draws attention to the emotional toll and moral dissonance teachers …

Beyond Language Deficiency: Students' Code-Switching In International Program Of Vocational Higher Education In Indonesia, Hilda Cahyani, Isnani Nur Safitri
Jurnal Pendidikan Humaniora
Code-switching (switching in-and-out from one language to another) has been an international debate whether it is a simply language avoidance or a communication strategy. It is thus crucial to see in what way and in what situations students made use code-switching in the classroom.
Does Culture Translate? A Case Study On Artificial Intelligencegenerated Text Concerning Japanese-Style Employment, Kanji Kitamura
Does Culture Translate? A Case Study On Artificial Intelligencegenerated Text Concerning Japanese-Style Employment, Kanji Kitamura
Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
Translation matters to international business when it has a discernible impact on firm performance or critical business processes. Current developments include machine translation, which is evolving in tandem with generative artificial intelligence (AI). On one hand, useful translation apps have become available to help the public communicate internationally. On the other hand, recent research concludes that even machine translation's best output still requires post-editing by a human. This argument implies that a machine-translated, grammatically accurate text may not always make sense to a human audience, possibly because of a semantic-pragmatic issue beyond the lexical level. This paper regards it as …
The Impact Of Emotional Intelligence In C-Suite Executives On Employee Motivation And Voluntary Turnover In Medium-Sized Healthcare Organizations In The United States, Pujan Desai
Harrisburg University Dissertations and Theses
This quantitative study sought to determine whether emotionally intelligent behaviors exhibited by C-suite executives in medium-sized US healthcare businesses were linked to increased employee motivation and decreased retention related outcomes rates. Employee burnout, staffing shortages, and workforce instability were just a few of the persistent issues facing healthcare businesses that highlighted how crucial good executive leadership was to be fostering organizational sustainability. Few empirical studies had examined emotional intelligence's influence at the C-suite level in healthcare organizations, even though it was widely acknowledged as a crucial component of good leadership. Research on the function of executive emotional intelligence and how …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Objective: To investigate the relationship between self-perceived overall dietary healthfulness and self-reported sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption among young adult Latinas, accounting for socioeconomic and acculturation-related factors. Design: Cross-sectional analysis using survey data. SSB intake was assessed using the BEVQ-15, and dietary self-perception was measured via a two-item scale. Multiple linear regression models examined associations between self-perception and total daily SSB intake, adjusting for income, education, and two validated acculturation indicators. Setting: Participants were recruited from a national online panel across the United States. Participants: A total of 881 Latina women aged 18–29 years participated. After removing cases with invalid outcome …

ZNRF3 and RNF43 are closely related transmembrane E3 ubiquitin ligases with significant roles in development and cancer. Conventionally, their biological functions have been associated with regulating WNT signaling receptor ubiquitination and degradation. However, our proteogenomic studies have revealed EGFR as the protein most negatively correlated with ZNRF3/RNF43 mRNA levels in multiple human cancers. Through biochemical investigations, we demonstrate that ZNRF3/RNF43 interact with EGFR via their extracellular domains, leading to EGFR ubiquitination and subsequent degradation facilitated by the E3 ligase RING domain. Overexpression of ZNRF3 reduces EGFR levels and suppresses cancer cell growth in vitro and in vivo, whereas knockout of …

Beyond Green: Re-Reading "Wicked" As Anthropological Text, Tan Gia Bao Huynh
Beyond Green: Re-Reading "Wicked" As Anthropological Text, Tan Gia Bao Huynh
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
This paper examines "Wicked" through the lens of cultural borderlands, revealing how the musical dramatizes the creation and navigation of social boundaries. By analyzing Elphaba's journey, the research demonstrates how her green skin serves as a powerful metaphor for cultural otherness, while her experiences at Shiz University and beyond illustrate strategies of resistance, accommodation, and identity formation familiar to those navigating between dominant and marginalized spaces. Particularly significant is the paper's examination of Oz's propaganda system, which demonstrates how cultures manufacture monsters and heroes through selective storytelling and public ritual. This analysis offers fresh insights into "Wicked's" enduring appeal, suggesting …

Adolescent dating violence (ADV) is a significant public health issue that disproportionately affects youths in southern rural communities, yet these populations remain underrepresented in research. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to examine the association between ADV and sociodemographic factors (gender, race, age, and education level), alcohol consumption, and bullying among adolescents in Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi using data from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. Guided by the social-ecological model, binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess relationships between ADV victimization and the selected predictors. Results indicated that females had significantly higher odds of reporting …

The formation of researcher identity is complex and evolves over various experiences, including international fieldwork and research. Especially important to consider is how power dynamics impact the development of researcher identity in the cases of international research between the Global North and Global South. This study uses phenomenological and decolonial approaches to analyze 23 interviews of faculty from India and the United Kingdom who have worked on UK-India research projects in the field of social sciences. Salient themes on how power and being were constructed, challenged, or negotiated by the participants include how researchers locate themselves in the paradigm of …

‘They’Re Squeezing Us Like An Accordion’:Assessing The Information Environment Of Working-Class Residents Of Dublin’S North Inner City, Stephanie Costello
Irish Communication Review
This article assesses the communication environment of the north inner city of Dublin, an area characterised by entrenched disadvantage, rapid demographic change, and neoliberal urban renewal. Findings were produced from a ten-week engagement journalism project involving the Dublin Inquirer, various community groups, and working-class residents. Using Communication Infrastructure Theory (CIT), the study draws on focus groups, participant observation, and interviews to assess local storytelling networks in the context of the project. The findings reveal a fractured communication action context (CAC), where safety concerns, transient populations, litter, lack of public space, and negative national media portrayals constrain residents' ability to connect …

Getting Her Off: Looking At Women Authors In Romance Compared To Other Fiction Genres, Helena Panek
Honors Theses
The present study explores women authors in fiction, specifically the romance genre, and how gender discrimination affects them. The factors studied were the price of books within the romance genre compared to other genres, societal factors affecting women authors, and discrimination within publishing. This study is an expansion and replication of the study done by Weinberg and Kapelner (2018) which looked at the discrimination against gender in the publishing industry. A common theme in the literature is that women authors are overlooked and underrepresented in genres that are not romance. This dismissal of women authors leads the romance genre to …

In September of 2025 “Fox & Friends” co-host Brian Kilmeade came under fire following remarks made in conversation with fellow co-host Lawrence Jones: JONES: They have given billions of dollars to mental health and the homeless population. A lot of them don’t want to take the programs, a lot of them don’t want to get the help that is necessary. You can’t give ‘em a choice. Either you take the resources that we’re gonna give you and—or, you decide, that you’re gonna be locked up in jail. That’s the way it has to be now. KILMEADE: Or, uh, involuntary lethal …
