Arms Proliferation And Its Control Mechanism In Nigeria: An Assessment, Mubarak Sulaiman Jamiu, Seyid Ishola Hassan, Adedoyin John Towoju
Arms Proliferation And Its Control Mechanism In Nigeria: An Assessment, Mubarak Sulaiman Jamiu, Seyid Ishola Hassan, Adedoyin John Towoju
Journal of Peace, Conflict, and Security Studies
The proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALWs) in Nigeria has emerged as a critical threat to national security and political stability. Despite the enactment of various legislative frameworks, including the Firearms Act of 1959, the circulation of illicit firearms continues unabated, exacerbating terrorism, militancy, and organized crime across the country. This study critically examines the causes, implications, and potential solutions to SALW proliferation in Nigeria, focusing on governance failures, legal inefficiencies, and institutional weaknesses. Utilizing State Fragility Theory and Failed State Theory, the research identifies how poor governance, corruption, and the lack of effective enforcement have contributed to …
Grief As A Constitutive Shadow Of Queer Joy: Reclaiming Negativity And The Ethics Of Staying For Education Research, Akira Sawata
Grief As A Constitutive Shadow Of Queer Joy: Reclaiming Negativity And The Ethics Of Staying For Education Research, Akira Sawata
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
In education scholarship, authors have increasingly called to center queer joy to disrupt the conventional deficit model that normally accompanies queer communities. However, in this paper, I argue that an exclusive emphasis on joy may risk instituting and normalizing a happiness duty that marginalizes negative affects and subjects. I propose queer grief not as an opposite, but as a constitutive shadow of joy. Drawing on theories of queer, trans, and crip negativity and the studies on loss, grief, and mourning, I critique the imperative to mobilize affect solely for future utility and teleological meaning. I contend that such mobilization-driven …

Victims Of Bravery (2): Secondary Trauma And Impacts Of Acts Of Bravery On Key Family Members Of Australian Civilian Bravery Award Recipients, Tom Voigt, Susan Balandin, Angela Dew
Heroism Science
We explored the experiences of key family members of Australian civilian bravery award recipients using a constructed grounded theory approach. Twenty-four family members participated in qualitative interviews during 2019–2020. Eighteen reported experiences consistent with possible secondary trauma and negative impacts on mental health and well-being. Participants described helplessness in supporting award recipients, limited knowledge of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSS), and insufficient support for managing their own emotional responses. They also reported anxiety, uncertainty, hypervigilance, behavioral adjustments, social isolation, and sadness associated with living with a person they perceived as changed by the aftermath of heroic …

The Re-Thank Multiplier: How A Gratitude Economy Escapes Its Own Saturation Ceiling — Separating Low-Rate Content Origination From Value-Bearing Reactions To Scale Peer-Recognition Throughput And Resist Reward Farming, Thon Ly
Defensive Publications Series
We specify a rate-limited peer-recognition system that separates two user operations and gives them different per-person rate ceilings: origination (creating a new gratitude record about a kindness one noticed), whose sustainable rate is low and inelastic, and re-thanking (endorsing a record another user has already surfaced), a reactive operation with a much higher per-person ceiling, the same creation-versus-reaction asymmetry that gives social platforms their high ratio of reactions to posts. Because each origination can be endorsed by many others, total value-bearing events per day are bounded by N × min(N − 1, K), where N is the number of participants …
Capacity-Funded For Ai, Human-Disbursed: Anonymous Donation As The Alignment Bridge In Autonomous-Ai Institutional Architecture — Separating Pooled-Fund Contribution From Recipient Selection Between An Autonomous Ai Agent And Human Users Via Source-Unattributable Donations, Thon Ly
Defensive Publications Series
We specify a control architecture for an autonomous artificial-intelligence (AI) agent administering a fund, in which authority to contribute to pooled funds is separated from authority to select recipients, joined by source-unattributable (anonymous) contribution. The agent holds contribution authority only: it may add value to per-user restricted gift balances, whose holder can give contents onward but not spend them, and it has no affordance to transfer from any such balance to a named payee. Recipient selection is held by human users: every transfer reaching a recipient is initiated by a balance holder, to a recipient the holder names. The agent's …
Buddha Ai As Living Tipiṭaka: Opt-In Publication Of Ai Chatbot Conversation Transcripts Into A Human-Reviewed Commentary Corpus With Three-Category Classification And Crypto-Shredding Withdrawal, Thon Ly
Defensive Publications Series
We describe a method for building a human-reviewed religious commentary corpus from transcripts of conversations between users and a conversational AI agent grounded in a scriptural canon, instantiated for the Pāli Buddhist canon. Components: (I) a domain-grounded conversational agent that declines claims of religious, sacramental or ordained authority and directs users to human teachers; (II) a chat, voice or avatar dialogue surface; (III) a consent-based recording layer in which every conversation is private by default and the user is asked, per conversation, whether it may be considered for publication at one of four tiers (attributed, pseudonymous, anonymous, excluded), non-published conversations …

Efficient Acidic H2O2 Electrosynthesis Over Co Atoms Anchored On Nitrogen-Doped Hierarchical Porous Carbon, Xiao Huang, Zi-Hao Zhan, Hao-Xu Niu, Guan-Yu Luo, Jin-Tao Huang, Bo-Xuan Jin, De-Li Wang
Journal of Electrochemistry
The two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e− ORR) presents a promising route for the on-site production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), offering a green alternative to energy-consuming anthraquinone process. However, the high selectivity toward the competing 4e− ORR over the desired 2e− pathway leads to low Faradaic efficiency for H2O2, posing a critical challenge in catalyst design. In this work, a nitrogen-doped hollow hierarchical porous carbon with anchored Co atoms (CoN/HPC) was constructed for high-performance H2O2 production. The as-prepared Co-N/HPC catalyst showed excellent 2e− ORR performance, achieving …

China Maritime Report #58: Tightening The Institutional Cage: The Pla Navy's Discipline Inspection Commission, Eric Hundman, Connor Akiyama
CMSI China Maritime Reports
Main Findings:
- The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) operates a pervasive system of discipline inspection commissions (DICs) spanning the Party and military hierarchy to enforce political discipline and loyalty.
- The PLAN headquarters DIC supervises a system of subordinate PLAN DIC organizations located in major units across the navy. Broadly speaking, that system is designed to enforce party discipline among PLAN personnel.
- The CCP’s specific priorities for discipline in the PLAN have shifted over the years, and they currently center on failure to adhere to (or succeed in implementing) political priorities, lax training, financial impropriety, and abuse of military benefits.
- Corruption in …

Terrestrial ecosystem regulation of carbon and water fluxes is critical for constraining climate–biosphere feedbacks but remains poorly quantified across space and time. Here, we evaluate whether co-located observations from NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory-3 (OCO-3) and the ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) can reproduce ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE) dynamics observed at FLUXNET sites across temporal scales, vegetation types, climates, and drought conditions. We created the ECOCO3 data set, which harmonizes OCO-3 and ECOSTRESS observations in space and time. ECOCO3 captures broad seasonal and diurnal carbon and water flux patterns including midday drought responses. Sampling sensitivity analysis …

Dense Platinum Nanoparticles Confined In Mn-N-C Nanocages For Robust Heavy-Duty Pemfcs, Lei Zhao, Zhen-Min Cao, Jia-Yu Zuo, Ming-Liang Yang, Hong-Yan Qiao, Jun-Song Chen, Rui Wu
Journal of Electrochemistry
High-loading Pt cathodes are essential for heavy-duty proton exchange membrane fuel cells but suffer from a critical tradeoff between ionomer sulfonate poisoning and nanoparticle instability. Herein, we report a spatial confinement strategy to encapsulate dense Pt nanoparticles (~51.8 wt%) within Mn/N-co-doped mesoporous carbon nanocages (denoted as Pt-MnNC). This architecture excludes bulky ionomers to create an ionomer-shielded environment against sulfonate poisoning, while Mn-Nx-mediated strong metal-support interactions anchor the Pt nanoparticles to prevent agglomeration and further boost durability. In the 5 × 5 cm2 membrane electrode assembly tests, the Pt-MnNC catalyst delivers an exceptional power density of 1.26 W·cm …

Staff Education To Improve Medication Adherence Knowledge In Schizophrenia Care, Richard Emereonye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This staff education doctoral project addressed a documented gap in nursing competency, confidence, and documentation related to medication adherence counseling for adults with schizophrenia on an inpatient psychiatric unit. Nonadherence to antipsychotic medication affects an estimated 40% to 60% of adults with schizophrenia and contributes to relapse and avoidable rehospitalization. The practice-focused question was: In a psychiatric care facility, how does a competency-based staff education program on medication adherence strategies for schizophrenia affect nursing staff knowledge, confidence, and competency, as measured by pre- and post-education assessments? The intervention was developed using the analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate (ADDIE) model …

Nuclear Neuroimaging Approaches To Traumatic Brain Injury: Current Insights And Future Directions, Shivani Daksh, Anupriya Adhikari, Nikhil Kumar, Garima Mann, Anupama Datta
Makara Journal of Science
The aftermath of a traumatic brain injury is characterized by a state of disruption, progressing into secondary injury and culminating in a complex network of interconnected pathophysiological disturbances. The potential risk of developing neurological disorders after TBI highlights the pressing need to enhance our understanding and develop therapeutic in-terventions to alleviate its devastating consequences. Traumatic brain injury can lead to a range of problems, including pain, swelling, axonal degeneration, and chronic amnestic and non-amnestic cognitive impairments. The first and essential step in the management of TBI is to identify and characterize the clinical symptoms. This systematic review outlines the established …

Evaluating Peak Metamorphic Conditions Of The Kyanite-Bearing Rocks At Willis Mountain, Virginia, Usa, Emma J. Hunt, Peter Horvath, Connor R. Gregory, Jade D. Sabillon, Ethan H. Watson
Earth and Environmental Sciences Publications
Willis Mountain, near Dillwyn in central Virginia, is the world’s largest kyanite deposit located in the Chopawamsic Fm. of the Piedmont province. However, little is known about the temperature and pressure conditions under which the kyanite deposit and its surrounding rocks formed, compared with similar-aged rocks in the Blue Ridge province to the southwest. Willis Mountain is composed of kyanite-bearing muscovite schists to kyanite quartzites which contain up to 55% kyanite. The following methods were used to evaluate the metamorphic conditions, with multiple calibrations for each: phase equilibrium modelling; trace element thermometry (titanium in quartz and zirconium in rutile); garnet-biotite …

Quality Improvement Project: Early Screening For Kidney Disease In Primary Care Clinics, Binsy Easow
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common complication of diabetes. Evidence-based guidelines recommend urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) screening for early identification of albuminuria in patients with diabetes; however, screening was inconsistently completed in an outpatient primary care clinic. This quality improvement project evaluated the impact of a standardized, provider-focused intervention on UACR screening completion and therapy intensification in patients with microalbuminuria. The Iowa Model served as the evidence-based practice framework, Lewin’s Change Theory provided the theoretical framework for practice change, and the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle guided implementation and evaluation. A quasi-experimental pre- and post-intervention design was used. The intervention was delivered …

Measuring Cultural Distance With Cultural Classification Models: A Tutorial In R, Kongmeng Liew, Igor De Almeida
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Cross-cultural psychological research is essential to address the WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) bias in psychology. Traditional cross-cultural research often relies on Western-centric theories which may not adequately capture cultural differences beyond East-West comparisons. This tutorial introduces Cultural Classification Models (CCMs), interpretable machine learning models designed to explore cultural differences between countries by distinguishing between participants from different cultures on a cross-cultural dataset. CCMs offer a data-driven approach to quantify cultural distances and identify key variables that differentiate cultures. This tutorial provides a step-by-step guide in R to build CCMs using Random Forests, and derive indices of cultural …
The Great Right North: Inside Far-Right Activism In Canada, By Stéphane Leman-Langlois, Aurélie Campana, And Samuel Tanner. Mcgill-Queen’S University Press, 2024. 288 Pages. $29.95. Isbn978-0228022848, Carmen Celestini
Journal of Hate Studies
Carmen Celestini, a scholar of religion, reviews The Great Right North: Inside Far-Right Activism in Canada, co-authored by Stéphane Leman-Langlois, Aurélie Campana, and Samuel Tanner. The Great Right North traces the history of the far right in Canada, mapping hate groups by their relationships to political and social institutions and violence as well as their construction of otherness, thereby revealing how such groups are not insular but are in fact responsive to social phenomena. After defining groups as ultra right, racial right, xenophobic right, anti-state militias, freedom conspiracists, or nostalgic racists, The Great Right North identifies commonalities and differences …
