Understanding The Epigenetic Landscape Of Barrett's Esophagus And Esophageal Cancer: A Review Of Current Findings, Caveats And Future Directions, Louise Lawless, Trevor Doherty, Carla Surlis, Niamh Gilmartin, Therese M. Murphy

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Esophageal cancer (OC) is currently the eighth most common form of cancer worldwide with a 5-year survival rate of 10%–20%, with the primary risk factor of esophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) being the development of Barrett's Esophagus (BO). Despite its clinical significance, the molecular pathogenesis underlying both BO and OC is not well understood. In recent years, epigenetic dysregulation, particularly aberrant DNA methylation, has emerged as a critical area of investigation, given its potential utility in the identification of diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic biomarkers. This review examines the evolving epigenetic landscape of esophageal cancer, including a focus on its origins in BO …

From Reactionary To Anticipatory Integrated Action: Novel Environmental Health Surveillance For Mass Gatherings, Benjamin J. Ryan, Michael Donahoo, Danielle Esler, Paul Barach, Benjamin Coghlan, Shelby Garner, Laura M. Langan, John Piispanen, Bryan W. Brooks

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Advances in AI-driven analytics, human-in-the loop techniques, and wastewater monitoring provide the foundation needed to shift from reactive to anticipatory actions for mass gatherings. Traditional surveillance systems focus on clinical and laboratory-based notification pathways, which often result in tardy actions being implemented. Thus, traditional surveillance is becoming outdated. Mass gatherings pose heightened public health risks and hazards, including trauma; injury and substance misuse; deliberate poisoning; and infectious diseases such as food and waterborne illnesses, sexually transmitted infections, and respiratory diseases. There is also a heightened concern due to reduced vaccination coverage. As a result, future international events such as the …

Connecting The Dots - Recognition Of Artificial And Natural Shapes Relies On Representing Points Of High Information, Gunnar Schmidtmann, Nicholas Baker, Kevin J. Lande, Filipp Schmidt

School of Health Professions

Physiological and psychophysical evidence suggests that the visual system represents object outlines using prominent curvature features, particularly regions of extreme curvature (convex maxima and concave minima). These curvature extrema often coincide with points of high informational content (“surprisal”), but this relationship is only correlational. It remains unclear whether the visual system explicitly encodes curvature extrema or instead prioritizes the most informative contour locations. To address this, we conducted two shape-matching experiments comparing the roles of curvature extrema and surprisal in shape representation. Observers performed match-to-sample tasks in which smooth reference shapes were matched to simplified polygonal versions created by connecting …

Numerical Simulation Of Micro-Cutting Processes For The Estimation Of Material Fracture Toughness, Juan J. Lainez Jan 2026

Numerical Simulation Of Micro-Cutting Processes For The Estimation Of Material Fracture Toughness, Juan J. Lainez

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Accurate determination of plane-strain fracture toughness is essential for structural integrity assessments of engineering components, yet conventional ASTM standardized testing methods require large, notched specimens that are impractical in many industrial and research contexts. This thesis presents a finite element method-based approach for estimating the mode I plane-strain fracture toughness of engineering materials from orthogonal micro-cutting simulations if the continuum damage mechanics-based fracture locus is calibrated. This method will eliminate the need for pre-cracked specimens while maintaining physically grounded fracture mechanics principles. The methodology applies to the Atkins energy-based cutting force model, in which the depth-independent intercept of the specific …

Hybridization Of Genetic Algorithm, Principal Component Analysis And Deep-Learning For Networks Intrusion Detection Systems, Mostafa A. R. Eltokhy, Hend M. A. Mahmoud, Mohammad Sammany

Trends in advanced sciences and technology

With cyber-attacks on the rise, the demand for precise and efficient Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) is more critical than ever. Traditional machine learning methods struggle with high false alarm and poor detection rates. IDS are crucial for creating secure digital environments by classifying and responding to network intrusions. However, the large volume of inputs for classification often leads to reduced accuracy and misclassification errors. To address this problem, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used to optimize the number of classifier inputs, enhancing simplicity without compromising accuracy. A significant challenge in PCA for feature selection lies in determining the best cutoff …

A Narrative Review Of The Central Neural Control Of Swallowing And Its Implications For Dysphagia Rehabilitation, Kuo-Chang Wei, Tyng-Guey Wang, Ming-Yen Hsiao Jan 2026

A Narrative Review Of The Central Neural Control Of Swallowing And Its Implications For Dysphagia Rehabilitation, Kuo-Chang Wei, Tyng-Guey Wang, Ming-Yen Hsiao

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Swallowing is controlled by a distributed neural network spanning the brainstem central pattern generator, subcortical modulatory circuits, and cortical regions responsible for volitional planning and sensorimotor integration. Evidence from lesion studies, neuroimaging, and neurophysiology demonstrates that dysphagia arises from disruptions at different nodes of this network, producing lesion-specific impairment profiles rather than a uniform swallowing deficit. This network-based perspective has shifted rehabilitation from predominantly compensatory management toward mechanism-driven interventions aimed at restoring physiological function. Behavioral skill-training and resistance-based exercises harness motor learning and cortical plasticity, whereas neuromodulatory approaches—including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), pharyngeal electrical …

Dysphagia And Rehabilitation In Patients With Parkinson’S Disease, Jong Mi Park, Seo Yeon Yoon Jan 2026

Dysphagia And Rehabilitation In Patients With Parkinson’S Disease, Jong Mi Park, Seo Yeon Yoon

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Dysphagia is one of the most clinically important complications of Parkinson's disease (PD). It impairs nutrition and quality of life and is closely linked to aspiration pneumonia, a leading cause of death in this population. It is often underrecognized, partly because subjective complaints underestimate the impairment found on objective testing, and partly because silent aspiration progresses without a protective cough. This review examines dysphagia in PD from a rehabilitation perspective, covering its pathophysiology, clinical features, assessment, and the evidence for rehabilitative interventions. Parkinsonian dysphagia arises from dopaminergic, non-dopaminergic, and peripheral mechanisms, and because it responds inconsistently to levodopa, rehabilitation has …

An Anatomy-Aware Efficientnetb0 And Cbam Framework For Suppressing Hard Boundary Bias In Mri Brain Tumor Classification, Ali Abdulzahraa Jalil, Ahmad Fatlawi, Hussein Ali Hussein Al Naffakh, Umar Farooq Khattak

Polytechnic Journal

The accurate classification of brain tumors from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is important for prognosis and treatment planning in neuro-oncology. Although Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) dominate medical image analysis and achieve high scores, many rely on a clinically dangerous shortcut that we call Hard Boundary Bias (HBB). When an MRI slice is saved with zero padding, the boundary between the bright skull and the dark background forms the strongest gradient in the image, and the network fixes on this artificial edge instead of the tumor. To address this, we propose a lightweight framework that combines an EfficientNetB0 backbone with a …
