Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Background: A deficiency of immunosuppressive regulatory T cells, as seen in scurfy (SF) mice or in IPEX syndrome in humans, can lead to multiorgan inflammation. Oral administration of the probiotic Limosilactobacillus reuteri Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH (DSM) 17938 prolongs survival and reduces Th1- and Th2-associated inflammation in SF mice. It remains unclear how DSM 17938-educated SF-CD4+ T cells modulate T-cell-liver communication.

Methods: To characterize CD4+ T cells from SF mice orally administered DSM 17938 (Prob-SF-CD4+ T cells) and to compare them with CD4+ T cells from SF mice (SF-CD4+ T cells), cells isolated from SF spleens were …

Cerebellar Motor And Non-Motor Contributions To Dystonia Pathophysiology And Treatment, Linda H Kim, Cheryl Brandenburg, Roy V Sillitoe

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

Dystonia is a complex neurological disorder characterized by sustained or intermittent abnormal movements and/or postures. However, dystonia's non-motor symptoms, particularly the sleep disturbances, are critical yet underexplored concerns that affect all ages. Here, we synthesize current knowledge on the motor and non-motor domains of dystonia, emphasizing the functional interconnections and plasticity within cerebellar motor, cognitive, and sleep-associated circuits to motivate more comprehensive and effective treatments that improve overall quality of life.

Gendered Resistance: Women’S Strategies Against Military Dictatorships, Argentina And Chile, Maricarmen Canales-Moreno Jan 2026

Gendered Resistance: Women’S Strategies Against Military Dictatorships, Argentina And Chile, Maricarmen Canales-Moreno

Publications and Research

This article compares the Madres de Plaza de Mayo in Argentina and the Agrupación de Familiares de Detenidos Desaparecidos (AFDD) in Chile to examine how women transformed their identities as mothers, wives, and daughters into strategies of political resistance under military dictatorship. It argues that maternal imagery, public mourning, and the transformation of private grief into collective defiance enabled women-led human rights organizations to challenge authoritarian regimes while strategically drawing on gender roles those regimes sought to enforce. The article traces the emergence of both organizations, their occupation of public space, hunger strikes, legal action, and engagement with international human …

Gender-Inclusive Language In Spanish: A Data-Informed Sociolinguistic Exploration Of Naming Variation, Silvia Rivera Alfaro, Jonathan Hanon Jan 2026

Gender-Inclusive Language In Spanish: A Data-Informed Sociolinguistic Exploration Of Naming Variation, Silvia Rivera Alfaro, Jonathan Hanon

Publications and Research

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a data-informed sociolinguistic exploration of the variation in the names given to gender-inclusive language in Spanish. We use publicly available Google Trends (GT) data to describe the frequency of usage of different names over time and explore their geographical distribution. To account for the challenges and limitations of using Google Trends, we compare the data with information from two large linguistic corpora (CORPES XXI and Google Books Ngram Viewer). Using these tools, we generate small datasets to explore the intricacies of the topic addressed in this paper. In our literature review, we identified 17 names for …

Brst Conserved Moments For Fluids, James Glimm Jan 2026

Brst Conserved Moments For Fluids, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

This note adds a missing proof for an assertion in the original paper Gauge Invariance and Repeated Time Isolated Solution Discontinuities.

The assertion is that under weak limits and within a constant energy isosurface, enstrophy is conserved up to losses due to viscous dissipation.

According to the BRST theory for quantum Yang-Mills fields, the conserved moments are exactly those with infinite vacuum expectation values. Application of the BRST theory to fluids is explored. The BRST restriction to the loop expansion (fixed space) is justified by the reqirement that a perturbative expansion can be constructed. In this case the theory predicts …

The Pure Yang-Mills Field. I: Eistence, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field. I: Eistence, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Two pure Yang-Mills quantum gauge field theories are constructed, one based on short distance asymptotics and the other based on long distance asymptotics.

The construction is based on the axial gauge, ghost states, the BRST framework and Gribov extension of the Hamiltonian, with a loop expansion cutoff to all finite orders for the dynamics.

The construction is established by renormalized perturbation theory to all finite orders.

The construction depends on an assumed principle of a maximum rate of entropy production

The Pure Yang-Mills Field, \, Iia: The Axioms, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field, \, Iia: The Axioms, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A previously constructed pure Yang-Mills quantum gauge field theory is shown to satisfy all Osterwalder Schrader axioms.

Non-Smooth Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Means, James Glimm, Jarret Petrillo Jan 2026

Non-Smooth Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Means, James Glimm, Jarret Petrillo

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Non-smooth (finite time blowup) Leray-Hopf solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation are constructed. The initial data for blowup is characterized by nonzero energy related turbulent fluctuations. The construction occurs in a finite periodic cube T3. The mean value of a weak solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is identified as a smooth solution of the Navier-Stokes equation.

Scaling Laws, James Glimm Jan 2026

Scaling Laws, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Scaling laws, accurate to all orders and for intermediate times, are constructed for Navier-Stokes and Euler fluids and for quantum Yang-Mills fields. A maximum entropy principle is assumed. A finite periodic spatial volume is assumed.

Conventional renormalization group scaling is accurate to all orders in a large time asymptotic limit, but it fails at intermediate times at less than leading order due to blowups and a possible resetting of the gauge group.

The extension to quantum general relativity is indicated.

The Pure Yang-Mills Field: Repeated Blowups, James Glimm, James G. Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field: Repeated Blowups, James Glimm, James G. Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The temporal scaling of the quantum Yang-Mills solution is characterized by analytic solutions for a limited time interval, each ended by a discontinuity (blowup).

For general initial conditions, there will be a series of blowups and a possible resetting of the gauge group..

The principle of a maximum rate of entropy production is assumed. A finite periodic spatial volume is assumed.

The Pure Yang-Mills Field: Axioms And The Mass Gap, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field: Axioms And The Mass Gap, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The infinite volume limit is constructed based on previously constructed finite volume pure Yang-Mills quantum gauge field theories. For this limit theory, Osterwalder-Schrader axioms are verified and the existence of a mass gap in the energy spectrum is proven.

Requirements for the Millennium Yang-Mills prize are fulfilled.

Prevention Beyond Deterrence, Benjamin A. Barsky Jan 2026

Prevention Beyond Deterrence, Benjamin A. Barsky

Faculty Scholarship

This Article reconceptualizes preventive justice—the public safety paradigm that seeks to prevent harm before it occurs. Scholars have long documented how cities have advanced this paradigm through largely punitive measures, notably variants of broken windows policing, which posit that aggressive misdemeanor enforcement deters more serious crime. Yet in the aftermath of the 2020 George Floyd protests, and as underscored recently in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, these measures have faced a legitimacy crisis—prompting calls for nonpunitive responses to nonviolent incidents.

This Article establishes a preventive justice approach that advances health and safety without emphasizing crime deterrence. It draws on …

Color-Blind Resilience: How Uniform Climate Standards Reproduce Environmental Inequality In The Rockaways, Aaryan M. Nair Jan 2026

Color-Blind Resilience: How Uniform Climate Standards Reproduce Environmental Inequality In The Rockaways, Aaryan M. Nair

Publications and Research

This paper examines how ostensibly uniform climate resilience standards can reproduce environmental inequality in socially uneven landscapes, using the Rockaway Peninsula in New York City as a critical case study. While flood-resistant building codes, zoning regulations, and insurance frameworks are designed to provide equal protection across flood-prone areas, this analysis argues that their “color-blind” application obscures and intensifies underlying disparities in financial capacity, housing conditions, and tenure. Drawing on environmental justice (EJ) theory, the paper identifies two key mechanisms through which inequality is reproduced. First, “code without capacity” demonstrates how uniform technical standards—such as elevation requirements under NYC Building Code …

Public Functions And Private Resources, Zachary S. Price Jan 2026

Public Functions And Private Resources, Zachary S. Price

Faculty Scholarship

At the federal level, the boundary between public and private functions is under pressure. On top of longstanding trends toward privatizing government functions and running agencies like businesses, the second Trump administration has sought to enlist private resources more broadly for performing public functions. This Article for the Washington University Law Review’s symposium on “Taxing, Spending, and the Constitution” outlines constitutional principles for assessing such actions. Building on prior work, it explains that presidents may seek outside assistance in exercising “resource-independent” powers, meaning powers like the veto and pardon authorities that do not depend on congressionally authorized resources in …

"Just Let Your Soul Glo": Humorous Music In Black American Comedy Films, Drew Brady Jan 2026

"Just Let Your Soul Glo": Humorous Music In Black American Comedy Films, Drew Brady

Music Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I inspect ways in which music has been used to create humor and meaning in black American cinema. In doing so, I address gaps in film music scholarship, as music in comedy films and in black cinema are both neglected topics. I suggest that humor in these films arises out of a particular blend of musical irony, parody, and satire, the exact combination of which is contingent on various historical, cultural, and political factors. In order to track this trend, I analyze humorous music in eight films, each representing a unique manifestation of this tradition: Watermelon Man …

The Relationship Between U.S. Presidents And Governors From Opposing Political Parties: Policy Implementation And Crisis Management, Adam Richey Jan 2026

The Relationship Between U.S. Presidents And Governors From Opposing Political Parties: Policy Implementation And Crisis Management, Adam Richey

Honors College Theses

This thesis studies the impact of partisan divisions between U.S. presidents and state governors in regard to policy implementation and crisis management of the American federal system. While previous research has mainly addressed congressional polarization, executive relationships across different levels of government have received comparatively less scholarly focus.  Particularism theory argues that electoral incentives shape executive behavior, and this study finds that political alignment significantly affects cooperation, coordination, and responsiveness during times of crises. Focusing on qualitative comparative case study methods, the analysis examines Hurricane Katrina (2005) and the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2021). The results show that partisan division most often …

The Open Secret: Drugs And Fishing In Georgia, Makala L. Collins Jan 2026

The Open Secret: Drugs And Fishing In Georgia, Makala L. Collins

Honors College Theses

Substance use and overdose deaths have been disproportionally disrupting families and communities in rural America. Increasing rates of drug use in these areas can be traced to the outsourcing of blue-collar work to outside of the United States, which economically restructured these areas by decreasing the profitability of generational industries. This is the story playing out in Georgia’s commercial shrimping industry and the communities it used to support. This research uses qualitative data collected over the past ten years to understand the perceptions and impacts of drug use on Georgia’s shrimping community. Using a lens of critical medical anthropology, environmental …

"Sing It Again": Linguistic Medievalisms In Geoffrey Hill And Seamus Heaney, Christian Cotten-Dixon Jan 2026

"Sing It Again": Linguistic Medievalisms In Geoffrey Hill And Seamus Heaney, Christian Cotten-Dixon

Honors College Theses

This study examines the use of early medieval structure and language in the poetry of Seamus Heaney and Geoffrey Hill, focusing on their near-contemporary collections, North and Mercian Hymns. Both collections use etymological and poetic structures to fashion an imagined medieval past in order to discuss personal and cultural narratives of history. Leveraging these structures in poetry and digging them out of past strata like a material artifact, Heaney and Hill collapse linear systems of time and language and access past word forms even as they evolve. This archaeological approach to poetry gives them the means to place the …
