Summary: Leaders play a critical role in shaping workplace well-being, respect, and mental health in mining. This study examined the relational leadership capabilities underpinning the SIGNal program and explored the contextual factors that influence leadership development and the application of learning in mining workplaces. The quantitative findings showed that supportive, inclusive, growth-oriented, and adaptive leadership behaviours tend to co-exist and are strongly associated with positive worker outcomes. Workers who perceived their leaders as highly relational reported substantially higher levels of job satisfaction, work engagement, well-being, and respect at work. The findings also highlighted the importance of organisational factors, with psychosocial …

Reflections From A Community Capacity Building Forum To Support People Bereaved By Suicide, Colleen Carlon, Jacquie Tarrant, Marie Eckersley, Priscilla Vindin
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
An estimated half the population may be impacted by suicide loss. The combination of grief and trauma makes the experience particularly complex. Recognised as the most stigmatised of all sudden losses people bereaved by suicide are in sociocultural contexts that disrupt constructive grief processes and create barriers for help seeking and supportive responses. Effecting change in this context poses a significant health promotion challenge. Social workers in the South West Region of Western Australia sought to develop and deliver a unique postvention approach aimed at strengthening the self-support capacity of people bereaved by suicide while building broader community capacity for …
Trust-Aware Algorithms For Stackelberg Ground Vehicle Routing, Doris Evelyn Meredith Brown
Trust-Aware Algorithms For Stackelberg Ground Vehicle Routing, Doris Evelyn Meredith Brown
Doctoral Dissertations
Despite decades of research focused on reducing ground vehicle traffic congestion, urban traffic networks worldwide continue to experience traffic flows that lead to increased network travel times, largely resulting from the routing decisions of individual vehicles. To address this challenge, this work leverages a Stackelberg game framework to model the interaction between a vehicle agent and a routing authority as a leader–follower game, in which the routing authority proposes routing interventions to which the agent responds. This research contributes to existing traffic mitigation literature by exploring the role of trust in route decision-making and providing trust-aware algorithms that influence vehicle …
Architecting A Complex Adaptive System Model For Selecting Policies To Reduce Kidney Discard, Lirim Ashiku
Architecting A Complex Adaptive System Model For Selecting Policies To Reduce Kidney Discard, Lirim Ashiku
Doctoral Dissertations
"The kidney allocation system is a complex, evolving system involving multiple heterogeneous agents. Each agent exhibits emergent behavior that may not fully align with the complex system goals. Therefore, there is a need for a transdisciplinary systems approach to visualize the interdependency among agents and understand the dominant patterns that shape the kidney allocation system.
First, this research presented an incremental hierarchical system engineering approach in identifying the agents’ needs and behaviors toward the complex systems’ goal of maximizing deceased donor kidney utilization and reducing kidney discard. The hierarchical systems approach linked with model-based system engineering aided in eliciting agents’ …

Analytical And Empirical Data-Driven Risk-Governance Design Across The Different Phases: Creating Informed Policy Adjustments For The Transportation Project Lifecycle, Mariam A. Elazhary
Doctoral Dissertations
"Transportation infrastructure is a critical foundation for economic productivity, yet agencies still face challenges in translating the expanding transportation datasets into defensible, phase-specific risk-governance tools. This dissertation addresses this gap by developing analytical and empirical, data-driven approaches to support risk governance across the transportation project lifecycle. Module 1 uses a panel model with bid-letting data to examine how out-of-state contractor participation affects pre-award competition and to derive entry-governance rules. Module 2 analyzes nonfatal injury data through iterative multiple linear regression and fatality data through association-rule change mining to identify multi-factor safety-risk configurations and develop adaptive safety-governance provisions. Module 3 develops …
Integrating Stakeholder Priorities Into Resilience Planning And Investment Decision-Making, Victoria Jeaneen Kraemer
Integrating Stakeholder Priorities Into Resilience Planning And Investment Decision-Making, Victoria Jeaneen Kraemer
Doctoral Dissertations
"Resilience is a system’s ability to bounce back from a disruption. However, resilience needs may vary across different stakeholders. To better integrate stakeholder input into resilience planning and investment decision-making, existing frameworks were combined to develop the Integrated Stakeholder-Centered Resilience Framework. This broad framework is tailorable across contexts and stakeholder types. Research results demonstrate the use of this framework to evaluate the effects of disruptions and represent stakeholder preferences for investments. In the first study, participants were randomly assigned to power outage scenarios, which did not affect their criteria priorities. An exploratory factor analysis revealed two main priorities, (1) Absorption …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Tourist activities may harm the environment, making tourists’ environmentally responsible behavior particularly important in tourism research. This research investigates the persuasion effect of message framing in environmental protection reminders on environmentally responsible behavior. Through five studies employing both field and controlled experiments and different measures of environmentally responsible behavior across varied tourism scenarios, we demonstrate that negatively (vs. positively) framed messages more effectively increase environmentally responsible behavior. Specifically, negatively framed messages are more effective in enhancing tourists’ environmental awareness, which triggers more environmentally responsible behavior. Furthermore, we identify social class as a moderator of message framing effectiveness, showing that negatively …

Introduction:
Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, is categorized as acute due to rapid disease progression but presents varying clinical outcomes. Although the mechanisms underpinning differential clinical progression are poorly understood, both host and parasite factors are implicated. Therefore, we sought to elucidate roles of primate host factors in mediating varying T. b. rhodesiense infection outcomes.
Methods:
Here, we assessed the roles of selected host cytokines in disease progression using a tsetse-mediated infection in a non-human primate (NHP) vervet monkey model that closely mimics HAT and natural infection. We quantified eight cytokines, including TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-10, IL-6, …

Inclusionary housing (IH) programs are a popular strategy for building affordable housing, incentivizing or requiring developers to provide housing at a below-market rate for people with lower incomes. But do we know how residents experience these policies? This paper explores how municipalities and external researchers evaluate inclusionary housing programs in the US, and whose perspectives are included in those evaluations. Employing VeneKlasen & Miller’s (2002) tripart model of power, which includes visible, hidden, and invisible dimensions, we analyze key informant interviews, municipal IH reports, and a systematic review of the literature, we find that few municipalities or researchers consider residents’ …
