Diffusion Of The Internet And Digital Divide In Post-Soviet Countries, Behrooz Asgari, Cosmos Amoah, Sudipa Majumdar

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study explores the diffusion process of the internet in countries that were previously known as the U.S.S.R. and are currently divided into 15 countries. Utilizing the S-shaped logistic curves, this paper forecasts future trends in internet diffusion in these economies. Data varied in range, with each country having different time frames for similar variables. The logistic curves for each country determined the length of time of internet diffusion, maximum carrying capacity, and different stages of the diffusion process, namely, emerging, growth, maturity, and saturation. The results show that all countries have exceeded the emerging and growth phases, with 13 …

Facial Expression With Type Of Eye Opening Associates With Multi-Organ Failure: An Observational Prospective Icu Cohort Study, Talal Ibrahim Mostafa Hagag

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research

Title Facial expression with the type of eye opening associates with multi-organ failure: an Observational prospective ICU cohort study Background Accurate prognostication in the intensive care unit (ICU) remains a challenging task. Conventional severity scores such as the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) quantify physiological derangement but overlook real-time neurological and affective responsiveness. Behavioral indicators—particularly facial expressivity and eye-opening response—may reflect cortical and brainstem integrity, offering a simple, non-invasive adjunct for bedside mortality prediction. Methods In this single-center, prospective observational study, 210 adult patients in the ICU were assessed within 24 hours of admission. Two blinded …

Gendered Resistance: Women’S Strategies Against Military Dictatorships, Argentina And Chile, Maricarmen Canales-Moreno Jan 2026

Gendered Resistance: Women’S Strategies Against Military Dictatorships, Argentina And Chile, Maricarmen Canales-Moreno

Publications and Research

This article compares the Madres de Plaza de Mayo in Argentina and the Agrupación de Familiares de Detenidos Desaparecidos (AFDD) in Chile to examine how women transformed their identities as mothers, wives, and daughters into strategies of political resistance under military dictatorship. It argues that maternal imagery, public mourning, and the transformation of private grief into collective defiance enabled women-led human rights organizations to challenge authoritarian regimes while strategically drawing on gender roles those regimes sought to enforce. The article traces the emergence of both organizations, their occupation of public space, hunger strikes, legal action, and engagement with international human …

Gender-Inclusive Language In Spanish: A Data-Informed Sociolinguistic Exploration Of Naming Variation, Silvia Rivera Alfaro, Jonathan Hanon Jan 2026

Gender-Inclusive Language In Spanish: A Data-Informed Sociolinguistic Exploration Of Naming Variation, Silvia Rivera Alfaro, Jonathan Hanon

Publications and Research

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a data-informed sociolinguistic exploration of the variation in the names given to gender-inclusive language in Spanish. We use publicly available Google Trends (GT) data to describe the frequency of usage of different names over time and explore their geographical distribution. To account for the challenges and limitations of using Google Trends, we compare the data with information from two large linguistic corpora (CORPES XXI and Google Books Ngram Viewer). Using these tools, we generate small datasets to explore the intricacies of the topic addressed in this paper. In our literature review, we identified 17 names for …

Brst Conserved Moments For Fluids, James Glimm Jan 2026

Brst Conserved Moments For Fluids, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

This note adds a missing proof for an assertion in the original paper Gauge Invariance and Repeated Time Isolated Solution Discontinuities.

The assertion is that under weak limits and within a constant energy isosurface, enstrophy is conserved up to losses due to viscous dissipation.

According to the BRST theory for quantum Yang-Mills fields, the conserved moments are exactly those with infinite vacuum expectation values. Application of the BRST theory to fluids is explored. The BRST restriction to the loop expansion (fixed space) is justified by the reqirement that a perturbative expansion can be constructed. In this case the theory predicts …

The Pure Yang-Mills Field. I: Eistence, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field. I: Eistence, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Two pure Yang-Mills quantum gauge field theories are constructed, one based on short distance asymptotics and the other based on long distance asymptotics.

The construction is based on the axial gauge, ghost states, the BRST framework and Gribov extension of the Hamiltonian, with a loop expansion cutoff to all finite orders for the dynamics.

The construction is established by renormalized perturbation theory to all finite orders.

The construction depends on an assumed principle of a maximum rate of entropy production

The Pure Yang-Mills Field, \, Iia: The Axioms, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field, \, Iia: The Axioms, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A previously constructed pure Yang-Mills quantum gauge field theory is shown to satisfy all Osterwalder Schrader axioms.

Non-Smooth Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Means, James Glimm, Jarret Petrillo Jan 2026

Non-Smooth Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Means, James Glimm, Jarret Petrillo

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Non-smooth (finite time blowup) Leray-Hopf solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation are constructed. The initial data for blowup is characterized by nonzero energy related turbulent fluctuations. The construction occurs in a finite periodic cube T3. The mean value of a weak solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is identified as a smooth solution of the Navier-Stokes equation.

Scaling Laws, James Glimm Jan 2026

Scaling Laws, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Scaling laws, accurate to all orders and for intermediate times, are constructed for Navier-Stokes and Euler fluids and for quantum Yang-Mills fields. A maximum entropy principle is assumed. A finite periodic spatial volume is assumed.

Conventional renormalization group scaling is accurate to all orders in a large time asymptotic limit, but it fails at intermediate times at less than leading order due to blowups and a possible resetting of the gauge group.

The extension to quantum general relativity is indicated.

The Pure Yang-Mills Field: Repeated Blowups, James Glimm, James G. Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field: Repeated Blowups, James Glimm, James G. Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The temporal scaling of the quantum Yang-Mills solution is characterized by analytic solutions for a limited time interval, each ended by a discontinuity (blowup).

For general initial conditions, there will be a series of blowups and a possible resetting of the gauge group..

The principle of a maximum rate of entropy production is assumed. A finite periodic spatial volume is assumed.

The Pure Yang-Mills Field: Axioms And The Mass Gap, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field: Axioms And The Mass Gap, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The infinite volume limit is constructed based on previously constructed finite volume pure Yang-Mills quantum gauge field theories. For this limit theory, Osterwalder-Schrader axioms are verified and the existence of a mass gap in the energy spectrum is proven.

Requirements for the Millennium Yang-Mills prize are fulfilled.

Prevention Beyond Deterrence, Benjamin A. Barsky Jan 2026

Prevention Beyond Deterrence, Benjamin A. Barsky

Faculty Scholarship

This Article reconceptualizes preventive justice—the public safety paradigm that seeks to prevent harm before it occurs. Scholars have long documented how cities have advanced this paradigm through largely punitive measures, notably variants of broken windows policing, which posit that aggressive misdemeanor enforcement deters more serious crime. Yet in the aftermath of the 2020 George Floyd protests, and as underscored recently in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, these measures have faced a legitimacy crisis—prompting calls for nonpunitive responses to nonviolent incidents.

This Article establishes a preventive justice approach that advances health and safety without emphasizing crime deterrence. It draws on …

Regulating Crisis Pregnancy Centers After Nifla And Dobbs: Controversies Over When Government Is Imposing An Orthodoxy About Abortion, Linda C. Mcclain Jan 2026

Regulating Crisis Pregnancy Centers After Nifla And Dobbs: Controversies Over When Government Is Imposing An Orthodoxy About Abortion, Linda C. Mcclain

Faculty Scholarship

How does this broader sense of Barnette’s proscription of government from imposing “what shall be orthodox” implicate governmental restrictions on reproductive autonomy? Battles over reproductive freedom centrally implicate objections that government is unconstitutionally imposing a gender orthodoxy. Arguments for a right of personal autonomy embodying an antitotalitarian principle of liberty are arguments for a right to resist governmental imposition of an orthodoxy— for example, an idea about the natural or traditional role of women as mothers together with a view about how best to respect the sanctity of life. Rights to reproductive autonomy, grounded in personal autonomy and equality, …

Match Or Mismatch? : The Effects Of Fingerprint Evidence And Expert Testimony On Jury Decisions, Kassie N. Thallas Jan 2026

Match Or Mismatch? : The Effects Of Fingerprint Evidence And Expert Testimony On Jury Decisions, Kassie N. Thallas

Dissertations

Fingerprint evidence is widely perceived as objective and reliable, yet is typically presented to jurors through expert testimony rather than directly evaluated. The present study examined how fingerprint match status and expert testimony influence juror decision-making. Participants (N = 225) read a mock criminal trial summary and were randomly assigned to one of five conditions. Four conditions were derived by crossing Expert Condition (fingerprint expert alone vs. conflicting experts) and Match Status (match vs. no match), with an additional control condition without fingerprint evidence. The participants made verdict decisions and rated the credibility, honesty and believability of the expert. The …

Exploring Detached Concern, A Dual-Process Emotional-Regulation Strategy, Among Intensive Care Nurses Providing End-Of-Life Care In The United States, Melissa Milton Miasek

Dissertations

Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses repeatedly provide end-of-life care (EoLC) and experience significant emotional distress, burnout, and moral distress that can lead to leaving the profession. Detached concern (DC), a dual-process emotional-regulation strategy which balances empathetic concern with emotional detachment, may support ICU nurses' emotional well-being; however, DC among nurses remains vastly understudied. This qualitative descriptive study gained deeper understanding of DC among ICU nurses providing EoLC in the United States. The study was guided by a conceptual model adapting Lampert and Glaser's dynamic DC process within Elfenbein's emotional regulation framework. The overarching research question explored ICU nurses' perspectives on …

Comprehending Levels Of Explainability And Ai Recommendations (Clear) Study Series, Virginia Sullivan Jan 2026

Comprehending Levels Of Explainability And Ai Recommendations (Clear) Study Series, Virginia Sullivan

Dissertations

AI systems can offer a great deal to improve decision-making through efficiency and predictive accuracy due to their unique ability to rapidly analyze large amounts of data relevant to the decision. Yet many AI systems remain opaque, limiting users’ ability to evaluate outputs and leading to issues of mistrust or over-reliance. This dissertation investigates how varying levels of AI explainability affect trust, perceived reliability, understanding, and confidence, and identifies perceptual and behavioral indicators of over-reliance behavior in AI-assisted decision making scenarios. This dissertation is organized as a three-study series. The CLEAR survey study uses a mixed design to examine the …

Thermal Analysis Of The Fiber Fuse Effect, John Seekins Jan 2026

Thermal Analysis Of The Fiber Fuse Effect, John Seekins

Dissertations

The fiber fuse effect is a self-sustaining damage propagation mechanism that can occur in the core of optical fibers. Under sufficient levels of applied power, laser light is absorbed as heat in the fiber. This phenomenon is characterized by a brightly glowing spot in the fiber that propagates towards the source of laser light at about 1 𝑚/𝑠. A numerical simulation of the fiber fuse effect is developed that solves the transient heat equation with source terms in cylindrical coordinates utilizing an explicit finite difference discretization. For the first time in a simulation of this type, a radiation transport equation …

Lost In Instructions: Study Of Blind Users' Experiences With Diy Manuals And Ai-Rewritten Instructions For Assembly, Operation, And Troubleshooting Of Tangible Products, Monalika Padma Reddy, Aruna Balasubramanian, Jiawei Zhou, Xiaojun Bi, Iv Ramakrishnan, Vikas Ashok Jan 2026

Lost In Instructions: Study Of Blind Users' Experiences With Diy Manuals And Ai-Rewritten Instructions For Assembly, Operation, And Troubleshooting Of Tangible Products, Monalika Padma Reddy, Aruna Balasubramanian, Jiawei Zhou, Xiaojun Bi, Iv Ramakrishnan, Vikas Ashok

Computer Science Faculty Publications

AI tools like ChatGPT and Be-My-AI are increasingly being used by blind individuals. Although prior work has explored their use in some Do-It-Yourself (DIY) tasks by blind individuals, little is known about how they use these tools and the available product-manual resources to assemble, operate, and troubleshoot physical/tangible products – tasks requiring spatial reasoning, structural understanding, and precise execution. We address this knowledge gap via an interview study and a usability study with blind participants, investigating how they leverage AI tools and product manuals for DIY tasks with physical products. Findings show that manuals are essential resources, but product-manual instructions …

Over the past 30 years, a rich ecosystem of scholarly information systems has developed that openly provide their services to the scientific community. These systems include aggregators of bibliographic metadata (e.g., DBLP, OpenCitations, OpenAIRE Graph, OpenAlex, ORKG, Semantic Scholar, CiteSeerX, and CORE); publication, data, and software repositories (e.g., Arxiv.org, Figshare, Zenodo, Software Heritage, and Dataverse); and PID authorities (e.g., ORCID, ROR, Crossref, and DataCite). This interdisciplinary Dagstuhl Seminar "Open Scholarly Information Systems: Status Quo, Challenges, Opportunities" (25381) was the first of its kind to bring together practitioners from this ecosystem, as well as researchers investigating related questions or relying on …

A Comparative Analysis Of Explainable Ai (Xai) Techniques For Transparent And Reliable Image Classification, Sovon Chakraborty, Shakib Mahmud Dipto, Kevin R. Pilkiewicz, Michael L. Mayo, Pratip Rana Jan 2026

A Comparative Analysis Of Explainable Ai (Xai) Techniques For Transparent And Reliable Image Classification, Sovon Chakraborty, Shakib Mahmud Dipto, Kevin R. Pilkiewicz, Michael L. Mayo, Pratip Rana

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Evaluating the trustworthiness of black-box machine learning models remains a significant methodological challenge. Their lack of transparency and interpretability limits applicability, because stakeholders often seek transparency before trusting the results of black-box machine learning models. Explainable AI (XAI) methods provide for human-understandable justifications and informed decision-making of these black-box architectures. Therefore, it is imperative to select the proper XAI model tailored to specific tasks. In this research, we focus on examining four XAI techniques: PEEK, LRP, GRAD-CAM, and LIME to understand how they perform against each other for image classification tasks. We evaluate the performance, robustness, generalizability, noise stability, and …

Memebuddy: Dialog-Style Audio Representations For Engaging Non-Visual Meme Experiences, Chirag Bhansali, Vikas Ashok, Hae-Na Lee Jan 2026

Memebuddy: Dialog-Style Audio Representations For Engaging Non-Visual Meme Experiences, Chirag Bhansali, Vikas Ashok, Hae-Na Lee

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Image memes are a pervasive form of online communication, widely used to convey humor, opinions, and cultural references. Prior work has explored making memes accessible to blind users, primarily through auto-generated descriptive captions. While these approaches improve comprehensibility and sometimes incorporate prosodic or emotional cues, they often fail to capture the humor, narrative structure, and contextual nuances that make memes engaging. We present MemeBuddy, a system that models memes as dialog, generating structured, multi-turn audio representations using role-based speakers. MemeBuddy reinterprets a meme as a conversation between two speakers, integrating extracted meme text with contextual knowledge implicitly inferred by a …

Attf-Gnn: An Attention-Based Multi-Omics Graph Neural Network With Modality Learning For Disease Subtyping, Sovon Chakraborty, Eleni Adam, Terry Stilwell, Harold Riethman, Desh Ranjan, Pratip Rana Jan 2026

Attf-Gnn: An Attention-Based Multi-Omics Graph Neural Network With Modality Learning For Disease Subtyping, Sovon Chakraborty, Eleni Adam, Terry Stilwell, Harold Riethman, Desh Ranjan, Pratip Rana

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We propose AttF-GNN, an attention-based graph fusion strategy for diseases classification and subtyping. In multiomics analysis, not all types of molecular data are equally relevant for disease subtyping and considering all modalities equally may obscure discriminative signals and limit the effectiveness of predictive models by overlooking modality-specific contributions. Therefore, we design an attention-based multimodal GraphSAGE framework that can automatically emphasize the modalities providing the most relevant information for classification. At first, we have constructed three graphs using mRNA, RNA-seq and DNA methylation modalities, and train each omics with individual GraphSAGE encoders. Next, a unified intersection graph is formed using an …

An Investigation Of Federated Gnns Under Aggregation, Data Poisoning, And Differential Privacy For Icu Length-Of-Stay Prediction, Shakib Mahmud Dipto, Soumya Banerjee, Sandip Roy, Ahmad F. Al Musawi, Preetam Ghosh, Sachin Shetty, Pratip Rana Jan 2026

An Investigation Of Federated Gnns Under Aggregation, Data Poisoning, And Differential Privacy For Icu Length-Of-Stay Prediction, Shakib Mahmud Dipto, Soumya Banerjee, Sandip Roy, Ahmad F. Al Musawi, Preetam Ghosh, Sachin Shetty, Pratip Rana

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Accurate prediction of ICU Length of Stay (LoS) is essential for clinical decision-making and healthcare resource management. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), such as GraphSAGE, offer a natural fit by capturing patient data from Electronic Health Records (EHRs) through graph structures. However, the distributed and sensitive nature of this data raises both privacy and legal concerns regarding the aggregation and training of GNN models. This additionally leads to issues with data imbalance and model robustness. In this study, we perform an analysis of the Federated Graph Neural Network (GNN-FL) framework to enable decentralized learning on EHRs derived from the MIMIC-III dataset. …

Distributed Semi-Speculative Parallel Anisotropic Mesh Adaptation, Kevin Garner, Polykarpos Thomadakis, Nikos Chrisochoides Jan 2026

Distributed Semi-Speculative Parallel Anisotropic Mesh Adaptation, Kevin Garner, Polykarpos Thomadakis, Nikos Chrisochoides

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper presents a distributed memory method for anisotropic mesh adaptation that is designed to avoid the use of collective communication and global synchronization techniques. In the presented method, meshing functionality is separated from performance aspects by utilizing a separate entity for each - a multicore cc-NUMA-based (shared memory) mesh generation software and a parallel runtime system that is designed to help applications leverage the concurrency offered by emerging high-performance computing (HPC) architectures. First, an initial mesh is decomposed and its interface elements (subdomain boundaries) are adapted on a single multicore node (shared memory). Subdomains are then distributed among the …

Proof Of Recovery: A Model To Enhance Data Integrity In Data Management Systems, Gustaf Barkstrom Jan 2026

Proof Of Recovery: A Model To Enhance Data Integrity In Data Management Systems, Gustaf Barkstrom

Theses and Dissertations

Businesses lose millions of dollars every year when they can’t restore data from backups. Research shows that Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) testing is not conducted frequently enough, nor are records maintained that demonstrate full data recovery from backups. This work introduces a design science artifact called PRTOK that aims to increase DRP testing. The design science artifact is a software solution that integrates with Data Management Systems (DMS)

such as iRODS and DSpace, and can work with formats such as HDF5 and BagIt. Proof-of- recovery records, or tokens, are recorded in a replicated, resilient, and indelible proof-of- authority blockchain data …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Teacher-Report Modifications Of A Tier 2 Evidence-Based Program In Elementary Schools After Implementation Supports Are Withdrawn, Navneet Kaur Jan 2026

A Qualitative Analysis Of Teacher-Report Modifications Of A Tier 2 Evidence-Based Program In Elementary Schools After Implementation Supports Are Withdrawn, Navneet Kaur

Theses and Dissertations

Growing literature emphasizes the importance of examining modifications (i.e., responses to unforeseen challenges and deliberate changes to a program) made by implementers to understand the long-term outcomes of evidence-based programs (EBPs), particularly after formal implementation supports, such as training and coaching, are withdrawn. Although prior research has documented that they occur during implementation, less is known about whether modifications occur once external supports are no longer available, and if so, what types of modifications are made, and the rationale for them. This gap is especially salient in school settings for teacher-delivered interventions. To address this gap, this study used semi-structured …
