Virtually Real. The Great Kimberley Wilderness And The Construction Of Indigenous Heritage, Martin Porr, Laura Mayer
Talking Heads Seminar Series
Australia’s significant rock art is part of contemporary Aboriginal culture and is of importance to a national and international community with interests in heritage, art, and culture. However, this heritage is often contested and subject to cross-cultural misunderstandings, threatening the preservation of its tangible and intangible components. Over the last decades, cultural tourism has been one of the globally most significant areas of economic development and growth. In Australia, the demand for ‘Aboriginal tourism experiences’ is increasing as well. The Federal Government and State Governments continue to focus on Aboriginal tourism as a strategy for economic development and social improvement. …

Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
This paper builds on the foundation of mainly Buddhist and existential contemplative philosophies a theoretical and practical framework for understanding and working with suffering as a transformational setting for human development and maturation. The authors propose that the first step in this path of transformation is radical acceptance of suffering as fundamental “truth” about human life, which could re-orient us from the usual mindset of avoidance, denial, dismissal, moralizing, or aggressive elimination of suffering. The next step in this reorientation is seeing suffering as containing valuable “nutrients” for human development and maturation, just as, analogically speaking, mud can grow lotus …

Hear My Voice As Who I Am: Theorizing The Essence Of Poetry In Holistic Global Citizenship Education, Shue-Kei Joanna Mok
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
Poetry as an imaginative language art has long been perceived as the core of humanity, the foundation of human advancement (Arnold,1880; Rorty, 2007). By composing, critiquing, and sharing/performing poems, not only does the process enrich and deepen one’s relationship to oneself, understanding and reflecting on the contextual, historical, cultural, social, and creative backgrounds of the poems and poets allows one to have greater connections with the broader environment across temporal, spatial, and social dimensions with human and non-human beings.
This paper first frames the core concepts and values of global citizenship from a Confucius perspective to emphasize the significance of …

Background: Dermatoglyphic minutiae are permanent epidermal ridge characteristics widely utilized in forensic identification and biometric science. Previous studies have demonstrated sex-related differences in fingerprint ridge morphology and ridge count, with females generally exhibiting higher ridge count than males. However, quantitative minutiae-based studies among Nigerian adolescents remain limited. This study evaluated sex-related and bilateral variations in fingerprint minutiae among secondary school students in Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study involved 300 apparently healthy students aged 14–18 years, recruited from an initial pool of 318 students assessed for eligibility across Batoro Community Grammar School, Remo Secondary School, and Remo …

Politics Of Maritime Security Governance: Institutional Fragmentation, Securitization And Community Engagement In Decentralized Border Area Of Indonesia, Suhirwan Suhirwan, Siswo Hadi Sumantri, Lukman Yudho Prakoso, Ahmad Gafuri Dohamid
Jurnal Wacana Politik
ABSTRACT. Decentralized archipelagic states face governance challenges in translating national security frameworks into localized institutional practices. This paper analyses the formalization of coastal community participation into maritime security governance in Batam, Indonesia through multi-layered political mechanisms. The study uses a qualitative case study design incorporating insights from securitization theory and multi-level governance frameworks. Data were collected between March and July 2025, comprising 18 semi-structured interviews, policy document analysis, mapping of institutional coordination, and field observations. The findings reveal a persistent multi-level securitization gap: national threat narratives, particularly those articulated in terms of sovereignty, have not been proportionally translated into regional …

Social And Physical Realities Of Aging In Northeast India: A Study Of Folk Societies, Kaushalendra Pratap Singh, Kanchan Devi
Social And Physical Realities Of Aging In Northeast India: A Study Of Folk Societies, Kaushalendra Pratap Singh, Kanchan Devi
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Population aging in Northeast India has emerged as a significant social concern in the context of rapid socioeconomic transformation and the gradual weakening of traditional family support systems. In the traditional folk societies of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, older adults increasingly face challenges related to social isolation, inadequate care support, and limited access to healthcare services. The outmigration of younger generations for employment and education has further reduced family-based caregiving, whereas geographical remoteness and insufficient healthcare infrastructure continue to affect the physical well-being of elderly populations. This study examines the social and physical conditions of elderly people in Arunachal Pradesh …

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Older Adults With Osteoarthritis: A Qualitative Study Of Healthcare And Caregiving Practices In Kishoreganj, Bangladesh, Samiur Rahman Anadi, Arnika Jannat Mou
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Many older adults are affected by osteoarthritis (OA), a common condition that causes pain, stiffness, and a loss of mobility. Given the increasing number of older adults in Bangladesh, it is critical to comprehend the unique requirements and challenges faced by older adults with OA, especially in underdeveloped areas with limited access to healthcare. Informal caregivers, typically family members, play a critical role in providing care for older adults with OA. However, they frequently lack support, training, and resources. There is a substantial knowledge gap regarding the complete scope of the needs and difficulties faced by older adults and their …

Embodiment, Ableism, And Age: A Qualitative Study On Gynecological Health Among Elderly Women With Disabilities In Rural Bangladesh, Anamul Hoque, Adiba Rahman, Chowdhury Anika Farah, Pranto Paul, Md Shahgahan Miah
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
In countries with LMIC status, women with disabilities often experience limited access to healthcare, and the reality is even worse, particularly for older women with disabilities. Systematic social and institutional processes, especially in many rural and low-resource contexts, render their bodies invisible and unworthy of care within reproductive and gynecological health systems. These people’s embodied experiences of aging and disability are often overlooked in dominant understandings of women’s health, which leads to gaps in care, recognition, and support. This study explores how rural elderly women with disabilities make sense of their gynecological health, and how experiences of aging, disability, gender, …

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Musculoskeletal diseases are one of the most prevalent chronic diseases globally, including in Vietnam, which can cause complications that adversely impact health, reduce the quality of life, and even result in serious long- term consequences, as well as significant health and economic burdens. In Lam Dong province, environmental factors, climate change, the agricultural production environment, and prolonged exposure to chemicals have affected farmers’ health. The article describes the musculoskeletal disease strategy among farmers who practice mulberry cultivation in Damb’ri commune, Bao Loc city, Lam Dong province. All data were extracted from a study titled “Health seeking behavior of farmers at …

Grief As A Constitutive Shadow Of Queer Joy: Reclaiming Negativity And The Ethics Of Staying For Education Research, Akira Sawata
Grief As A Constitutive Shadow Of Queer Joy: Reclaiming Negativity And The Ethics Of Staying For Education Research, Akira Sawata
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
In education scholarship, authors have increasingly called to center queer joy to disrupt the conventional deficit model that normally accompanies queer communities. However, in this paper, I argue that an exclusive emphasis on joy may risk instituting and normalizing a happiness duty that marginalizes negative affects and subjects. I propose queer grief not as an opposite, but as a constitutive shadow of joy. Drawing on theories of queer, trans, and crip negativity and the studies on loss, grief, and mourning, I critique the imperative to mobilize affect solely for future utility and teleological meaning. I contend that such mobilization-driven …
On Christian Nationalism: Critical And Theological Perspectives, Edited By David M. Gides And Joan Braune. Routledge, 2026. Routledge Studies In Fascism And The Far Right. 406 Pages. $46.39 Isbn 978-1032805665, Kim Shively
Journal of Hate Studies
Anthropologist Kim Shively reviews On Christian Nationalism: Critical and Theological Perspectives, edited by David M. Gides, a theologian, and Joan Braune, a philosopher. Nineteen authors contribute essays on four topics: defining Christian nationalism, trends in the United States, international and comparative analyses, and theological responses to Christian nationalism. Christian nationalism is a platform for grievance, the contributors argue, and the theme of loss runs throughout the book: nostalgia for an imagined social history and loss or perceived loss of White privilege, with its attendant racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, sexism, and homophobia.

Mental Health Standards In Michigan Juvenile Detention Facilities: At Odds With Best Practice And State’S Own Public Health Code, Jessica M. Montgomery
Mental Health Standards In Michigan Juvenile Detention Facilities: At Odds With Best Practice And State’S Own Public Health Code, Jessica M. Montgomery
PNHA Review
This paper details the current standards and qualifications established for mental health providers in Michigan juvenile justice system (JJS) detention facilities. The state policies regulating JJS detention facilities are compared with Michigan’s Public Health Code Act (1978) and best-practice recommendations published by national mental health and juvenile justice authorities. This paper finds that Michigan policies regulating JJS detention facilities fall below both national best-practice recommendations and the state Public Health Code (1978), and effectively establish a standard of mental health care for youth in JJS detention facilities that is below what is established for youth in the general public. It …
Listening To The Society Of Yeager Scholars: An Interpretive Companion For Institutional Memory And Strategic Reflection, Brian A. Hoey
Listening To The Society Of Yeager Scholars: An Interpretive Companion For Institutional Memory And Strategic Reflection, Brian A. Hoey
Publications of the Honors College at Marshall University
Listening to the Society of Yeager Scholars is an interpretive companion for institutional memory and strategic reflection. Rather than offering a definitive history of the Society of Yeager Scholars or prescribing its future direction, the document reads the Society as an institution with a culture—one shaped over nearly four decades through educational purposes, relationships, traditions, expectations, and changing interpretations of what the Society is and should be.
Drawing on early oral histories, Alison Gerlach’s history of the Society’s first thirteen years, contemporary accounts, institutional records, strategic-planning materials, and sustained institutional experience, the document identifies recurring ways participants have understood the …

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This study examines the Perang Ketupat tradition in Tempilang Village, Bangka Belitung Province, Indonesia, as a form of cultural performance. It aims to analyze the tradition through five dimensions: ritual, performing arts, community participation, cultural education, and community-based safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage (ICH). Employing a qualitative approach based on performance ethnography, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, document analysis, and a literature review during the 2024 Ketupat War Festival. The findings reveal that the tradition functions not only as a ritual for warding off misfortune but also as a living cultural performance that reinforces cultural identity, strengthens …

Relationship Between Language, Culture, And Thinking Of The Kajang Community From The Perspective Of Anthropological Linguistics, Harlinah Sahib, Jumardin Muchtar, Herawati Abbas, Ferawaty Syam
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
In terms of anthropological linguistics, the study aims to explore the interaction of language, culture and cognitive tendencies in the community of Kajang. It particularly looks into the traditional oral expressions (kelong) of the community, including Kelong Basing Rikong, Lok-lok, and Ati-ati Raja, as their understandings of life, death, spirituality, and social values are expressed. A qualitative ethnolinguistic approach, informed by anthropological linguistics, was used in this study. Data collection methods included field observations, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders (Ammatoa), cultural practitioners and community elders, and a documentary analysis of oral texts, especially Kelong. …

Regulating Religious Coexistence : The Intricacies Of Interfaith Cooperation In Coastal Kenya, Erik Meinema
Regulating Religious Coexistence : The Intricacies Of Interfaith Cooperation In Coastal Kenya, Erik Meinema
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Regulating Religious Coexistence offers a compelling ethnographic analysis of how Muslims, Christians, and practitioners of indigenous African religions negotiate coexistence in Kenya’s coastal region. The book conceptualizes religious diversity as a dynamic field shaped by multiple partly intersecting and partly conflicting models of interaction. These include the political secularism promoted by the Kenyan state and civil society organizations focused on interfaith harmony, forms of competition between religious groups, and pluralistic practices in which individuals draw on multiple traditions to meet spiritual needs.
Through a close examination of civil society initiatives funded by Western donors to foster peacebuilding and to counter …
“Imagining For Delight” And “Gazetteer Of Dialects And Local Customs”: Zhou Zuoren's Conceptualization Of Aesthetic Education Through Nursery Rhymes, Chengzhu Cao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In response to the mysterious associations and political interpretations attached to nursery rhymes in ancient China, Zhou Zuoren explained the emergence of children's songs through anthropological theories that engage with human auditory development, the instinct of imitation, and the singing practice of early humans. He opposes the didactic and moralizing functions assigned to children's songs and advocates a view of pleasure that emphasizes “finding delight through imaginative association” and personal enjoyment. He evaluates the aesthetic value of children's songs from the child's perspective a, regarding them as “poetry for children.” He particularly focuses on their experiential recording of dialects, customs, …

Class(Room) Culture: New Conceptualization And A Model Of Culture-Aware Teaching, Ravit Heskiau
International Journal of Transformative Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
As higher education becomes increasingly personalized and students’ individual identities are increasingly considered, this article explores the concept of classroom culture as part of assessing, embracing, and shaping each class’s shared characteristics as a collective. I define classroom culture and explain why it is paramount for educators to understand the unique cultures of their classes and actively assess them, striking a balance between supporting classroom culture and shaping it. Following a critical literature review, I demonstrate the application of commonly used cultural frameworks from the organizational culture literature to higher education classes. Specifically, I expand on how they can help …
