310 Prolific participants viewed eight AI-generated images of men who appeared to be Asian, Hispanic, Black, or White who were "suspects in an ongoing investigation." Participants viewed one of the two targets for each ethnic group, one with an arm tattoo and one without. Participants rated each target on characteristics such as intelligence, competency, and trustworthiness, and rated how likely they think it was that the target was the perpetrator. Men without a tattoo were rated more positively than those with a tattoo across all four racial/ethnic groups. Hispanic men, with or without a tattoo, were rated the most negatively. …

Language Choices On Tanzanian Instagram, Carolyne Ulomy
Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture
This study examines multilingual practices on Instagram within Tanzania’s rapidly growing computer-mediated communication (CMC) landscape. Using a qualitative corpus-based approach, I analyzed 400 Instagram posts from 40 users and conducted five techno-biographical interviews to explore what shapes language choice and how it relates to content. Findings show that Tanzanian Instagram users draw on Swahili, English, Swanglish/Kiswanglish, Community Languages (CLs) and Foreign Languages (FLs) to communicate and construct online identities. Interview data indicate that language choice is influenced by the intended audience, post content, brand image, language accessibility, the original language of the material and relationships between interlocutors. Corpus patterns further …

Rethinking College Curricula: Preparing Students With The Skills Needed For Successful Cultural Resource Management (Crm) Careers, Kate Monti Barcalow, Shelby L. R. Anderson
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Postsecondary education is at the forefront of preparing the next generation of cultural resource management (CRM) practitioners for the workforce. We conducted a study from 2022 to 2023 to gain perspective on improving postsecondary CRM curricula in order to better prepare students for careers in CRM. Our research included semi-structured interviews of nine key consultants with careers in CRM, along with a survey of the broader CRM professional community in the Pacific Northwest, USA. Results from the research identified the necessary skills for new college graduates, areas where CRM programs could improve their curricula, and various approaches in and out …
Environmental Factors In The Production Of Code-Switching In Pre-School Children: A Case Study Of Three Indonesian Children
Jurnal Pendidikan Humaniora
The study investigates code-switching performed by three pre-school children in Indonesia. The study employs a qualitative research methodology with an exploratory case study. The participants of the study are three pre-school children who live in a small village in Banten Province in which two languages are exposed and spoken by the majority of people in that area namely Bahasa Indonesia as the national language and Sundanese as a vernacular language. The study reveals that the code-switching utterances performed by preschool children are classified into intra and inter sentential switches.

SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Creative Engagement for Community Through the Life-Span
Creative Engagement includes crafts, cultural practices, expressive arts, and activities that bring people together. Having access to such activities enables people to develop healthy habits, social interactions, and build community that can sustain one throughout the lifespan. On-going research indicates that Creative Engagement Activities, and the Communities of Practice that build around them, benefit people throughout the life-span, but become particularly important to older adults, by building resilience and social connections, in the face of inevitable life losses.

Code-switching (switching in-and-out from one language to another) has been an international debate whether it is a simply language avoidance or a communication strategy. It is thus crucial to see in what way and in what situations students made use code-switching in the classroom.

Collapse On The Eastern Frontier: The Abandonment Of Tijeras Pueblo 1300-1425 Ad, Gage Anderson
Collapse On The Eastern Frontier: The Abandonment Of Tijeras Pueblo 1300-1425 Ad, Gage Anderson
The Agora
Tijeras Pueblo (LA-581), was an Ancestral Puebloan settlement occupied intermittently between approximately 1300 and 1425 AD. The pueblo is located at the intersection of the Sandia and Manzano Mountains near Tijeras, New Mexico. Despite the Pueblo’s strategic position at the intersection of several large canyons and mountain passes, and valuable trade connections as a result of this, the settlement experienced two major abandonment episodes. The first around 1370 AD, and the second around 1425 AD. This paper uses Tijeras Pueblo as a case study to examine the causes of settlement failure on the eastern Puebloan frontier. This analysis draws on …

The Agora
An entry from a collection of short poems written over the summer of 2023. This collection recalls the island of Ireland: the history, the nature, the people, from an outsider’s perspective. Written on location across the varied landscapes of the emerald isle, this collection centers the melancholy of travel, and the resiliance of the Irish people. The titular poem recalls the Lyreen River, which runs through the town of Maynooth.

Luna went to the Guardian Angel Catholic School from pre-K to 8th grade and participated in many of the Catholic traditions and customs that were part of this community. Luna talked about many of the stores and businesses that were part of her everyday life and helped to develop a sense of community among neighbours through Nava’s grocery store, attending church bazaars, and enjoying dining at the many restaurants and recreational …

Cripping The Border – Acompañamiento As Access: An Ethnographic Case Study Of Transborder Youth With Disabilities, Marco O. Amaral
Dissertations
The U.S.-Mexico border is a historical, geopolitical site of intense militarization where colonial logics of "othering" converge to marginalize disabled transborder youth. While transborder studies have expanded, students with disabilities remain relegated to the "void" and contained by educational systems that prioritize surveillance over access. Grounded in Sepúlveda’s (2011) acompañamiento and Transborder DisCrit, this ethnographic case study examines the lived experiences of both students and their families who cross the border daily to attend school in the U.S. It frames these journeys not as mere commutes, but as acts of defiance within the broader disability rights movement.
