Regional Homeschool Children’S Experience With Arts-Based Digital Literacy Workshops, Kimberly Maslin, Karen Murcia, Jane Mulcock

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The number of children engaged in homeschool education is increasing, particularly in regional areas of Australia. Homeschool families currently access community-based activities such as theatre productions and sports programs, as well as public library services, to enrich their children’s learning. However, access to quality programs that support digital literacy skills remains limited and the benefits of these programs to home schoolers remain largely unexplored. This study examined the experiences of homeschool families with children aged 6–12 who participated in a series of stop-motion animation workshops held in a regional Western Australian public library. Data were collected from both participating parents …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Southern Australia supports a high diversity of fishes in the family Syngnathidae, which is recognised as globally threatened, facing threats from coastal development, over-exploitation and bycatch. In southwestern Australia, Cockburn Sound houses a large industrial port and naval defence assets with plans to substantially expand the port facilities but also sits within a recognised syngnathid ‘hotspot’. Using a broad array of data sources, including historical museum vouchers, published records, historical and contemporary observations from notebooks and diving surveys, historical and contemporary trawl surveys, citizen science observations and environmental DNA, we compiled 4839 records of syngnathid fishes from the embayment. Twenty-one …

Muscle–Tumor Crosstalk In Exercise Oncology: Exercise-Induced Myokines And Cancer Cachexia, Amirhossein Ahmadi Hekmatikar, Francesco Bettariga, Álvaro López Llorente, Diego Fernández-Lázaro, Katsuhiko Suzuki, D. Maryama Awang Daud

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Exercise-induced myokines, such as IL-6, irisin, and myostatin, play crucial roles in mediating systemic adaptations and modulating tumor progression. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on how regular moderate-intensity exercise affects the myokine network within the tumor microenvironment (TME) of solid tumors. Results from the 86 included studies indicate that structured training (aerobic: 45–65% VO2 max; resistance: 45–70% 1RM) enhances the expression of beneficial myokines that support immune surveillance, reduce inflammation, and improve muscle–tumor cross-talk. IL-6 demonstrates a dual modulatory effect on inflammation and immunity; irisin contributes to tumor apoptosis, while myostatin downregulation supports muscle integrity and metabolic balance. Evidence suggests …

Story, Mapping And “Jarriny”: A Collaborative Exploration Of Artistic Responses To Extreme Weather In The Work Of Natalie Davey And The 2023 Fitzroy River Floods, Natalie Davey, Renée Newman

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Extreme weather events caused by human created climate change not only cause catastrophic impact on human and the more-than-human populations but can also trigger permanent changes to place. With these changes, stories shift, in turn influencing knowledge and cultural systems. This article is a dialogue between Natalie Davey and Renée Newman, about the role of art, story, mapping and “jarriny” (translating to totem) as a tool for education on extreme weather events and climate crisis. We also consider the vital role custodianship plays in response to and recovery from an extreme weather event, as was the case for Natalie Davey …

Evolution, Structuration Theory, And New Research On Free Will, James Lull Jul 2026

Evolution, Structuration Theory, And New Research On Free Will, James Lull

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Classic structuration theory explains how social actors use their personal and collective agency to contend with the structural forces they encounter in everyday life. The antonimous interface between structure and agency is analyzed from an evolutionary communication perspective as it applies to structuration theory generally and to media audiences specifically. The explanatory power of structuration theory is then reconsidered in light of new research on an eternally profound question: Is the power of human agency restricted, if not entirely eliminated, by a lack of free will that can be exercised in human endeavors? Although the nature of structural influence is …

Physical Inactivity In Preclinical Alzheimer's Disease: Risk Factor, Early Symptom, Or Both, Jiawei Zhao, Xin Li, Mengxuan Wu, Zhanjun Zhang

Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications

Physical inactivity is a key modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, emerging evidence suggests a bidirectional relationship where inactivity also serves as an early manifestation of AD pathology. This perspective synthesizes recent findings from long-term epidemiological cohorts, brainstem neuropathology, and digital phenotyping to reconceptualize the role of inactivity in preclinical AD. Early tau accumulation in catecholaminergic nuclei (locus coeruleus and ventral tegmental area) disrupts circuits essential for reward valuation and effort calculation. We hypothesize that this neurobiological failure may manifest as prodromal apathy and declining physical activity years before cognitive impairment. Standard metrics like step counts fail to …

The Power And Peril Of Awe In Leadership: Transforming Follower Identity And Behavior, Jack Mcguire, Daniel Mcallister, Jochen Menges, David De Cremer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Awe is a profound emotion that has captured significant attention within psychological research. While the potential for leaders to inspire awe in followers has received some recognition, systematic research on the nature and effects of awe in leadership—and within organizational contexts more broadly—remains limited. In this article, we offer a conceptual framework that explains the multifaceted and transformative nature of leadership through the power of awe. Specifically, we identify four leader behaviors—charismatic leadership tactics, exceptional performance, problem reframing, and self-sacrificial behavior—that elicit awe among followers. We further propose three variants of awe-inspiring leaders, describing how variation in a leader’s self-construal …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effective pharmaceutical interventions for treating the secondary damage associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are limited due to poor delivery into the brain, insufficient target engagement, and an incomplete understanding of the pathophysiological changes that occur post-impact. Thus, nanoparticles (NP), which have an enhanced permeation and retention-like effect within the perturbed blood-brain barrier, have grown as a potential candidate for treating TBI. We have investigated the antioxidant capacity of thiol-based NP, termed neuroprotective copolymers (NPC3), and their ability to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation products (LPOx). Here, we assessed the efficacy of NPC3 for alleviating the secondary …

Soilless Substrates As A Critical Control Point For Mitigating Food Safety Risks Within Hydroponic Leaf Lettuce Production, Eric Nuertey Tetteh Jul 2026

Soilless Substrates As A Critical Control Point For Mitigating Food Safety Risks Within Hydroponic Leaf Lettuce Production, Eric Nuertey Tetteh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The effect of hydroponic soilless substrates and microbial biocontrol agents on the persistence of foodborne pathogens in indoor lettuce production is variable depending on substrate type, pathogen species, and biocontrol formulation. This study addressed key gaps by first characterizing the ability of different substrates to support Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes survival and then evaluating the ability of pine biochar and Bacillus subtilis to suppress pathogen persistence in selected substrates under controlled conditions. In the first experiment, the persistence of Salmonella and L. monocytogenes was evaluated in four soilless substrates: rockwool (RW), low density foam (LDF), peat moss (PM) and coco …

Recurrent somatic mutations in the spliceosome genes SF3B1, SRSF2, and U2AF1 are frequently identified in patients with myeloid neoplasms, such as myelodysplastic syndromes. We characterized the in vivo consequences of expressing two hotspot mutations in U2AF1 that code for the S34F and Q157R substitutions. Our results indicate that the two mutations induce distinct hematopoietic phenotypes in mice, suggesting that the U2AF1

2020-Current year OA Pubs

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if a single-subject study (S3) design, utilizing paired transcriptome samples from the same patient (eg, "sepsis" vs "recovered"), can replicate transcriptomic signatures from small case-control studies, addressing challenges in patient accrual for rare or sub-stratified diseases.

METHODS: We generated a sepsis gene signature (SGS) comprising 300 differentially expressed genes (DEGs; FDR <  5%) from a human sepsis case-control cohort using general linear models (GLMs). Reproducibility of SGS was assessed through three approaches applied to sub-sampled independent datasets: single-subject analyses (N-of-1-MixEnrich), anticipated to perform better; conventional paired-sample GLM analyses; and a traditional case-control GLM analysis.

RESULTS: SGS reproducibility in GLM analyses was inconsistent at smaller cohort sizes (∼80% reproducibility; n = 5) but stabilized at cohort sizes >6. Remarkably, the single-subject-study approach consistently reproduced SGS in each of the 18 subjects individually (100% reproducibility; n = 1).

DISCUSSION: Conventional GLMs are …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive treatment for glioblastoma that increases blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability. However, the mechanisms and spatiotemporal features of this effect remain unclear. It is also unknown whether LITT promotes release of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA).

METHODS: Using our previously developed LITT mouse model, we employed single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) to investigate gene expression changes in endothelial cells following LITT in the naive mouse brain. Brains were also harvested at multiple time points to assess LITT effects on tight junction (TJ) integrity and transcytosis via immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopy. Human glioblastoma tissues were …

More than 770 genetic skeletal disorders have been described, most with disease-causing variants reported in 1 of over 550 different genes. The ClinGen Skeletal Disorders Gene Curation Expert Panel was established to determine the strength of the evidence that supports specific gene-disease relationships (GDRs). Such information can assist clinical testing laboratories in choosing genes that should be included on diagnostic panels. Nine genes accounting for the most frequently encountered skeletal dysplasias (COL1A1, COL1A2, COL2A1, FGFR3, SLC26A2, TRPV4, COMP, ALPL, and SOX9) associated in the medical literature with 26 different skeletal disorders were reviewed using a semi-quantitative scoring framework. This framework …

Advancing Imbalanced Classification Through Representation Learning, Morteza Mohammady Gharasuie Jul 2026

Advancing Imbalanced Classification Through Representation Learning, Morteza Mohammady Gharasuie

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Real-world datasets frequently exhibit severe class imbalance, where certain categories are significantly underrepresented relative to others, leading standard empirical risk minimization to bias learning toward majority classes and degrade performance on minority categories. This dissertation addresses imbalanced classification across both structured tabular data and long-tailed visual recognition by developing methods that improve representation learning and decision reliability under skewed distributions. For tabular data, it introduces Conditional Probability Representation (CPR), a target-based encoding framework that embeds feature–label relationships directly into the representation space, enhanced by a progressive feature upgrading mechanism for semi-supervised settings and a class-frequency–aware extension that improves robustness to …

Analysis Of Clinical Health Worker Notes With Explainable Artificial Intelligence For A Better Perspective In Preventing Readmission, Christopher Scott Klimp Jul 2026

Analysis Of Clinical Health Worker Notes With Explainable Artificial Intelligence For A Better Perspective In Preventing Readmission, Christopher Scott Klimp

Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University

Emergency Department (ED) readmissions remain a major challenge for healthcare systems, affecting both patient care quality and financial costs. Most prediction models depend largely on structured data from clinical tools that assign points to a small set of predefined factors – such as comorbidities, previous hospital visits, and behaviors such as smoking and drinking – and then sum those points to produce an overall risk score. These point-based tools leave out important information from Social Determinants of Health and a wealth of information from Community Health Workers (Community health workers (CHWs), trusted members of a community who help connect people …

Examining Individual Representation In Asian Elephants (Elephas Maximus): Implications For Recognizing Familiarity And Presence Of Conspecifics, Elena Lawson Jul 2026

Examining Individual Representation In Asian Elephants (Elephas Maximus): Implications For Recognizing Familiarity And Presence Of Conspecifics, Elena Lawson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Elephants’ flexible cognitive abilities and fission-fusion societies make them an excellent study species to investigate individual social recognition. Despite the substantial role chemical cues play in elephant social communication, there is a considerable lack of research into their chemosensory social recognition, especially in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus). Using two-choice tests, I assessed Asian elephants’ chemosensory ability to discriminate between individuals by both presence and familiarity. I also used a habituation-discrimination paradigm to assess individual recognition in elephants by determining whether elephants integrate odor cues (i.e., urine and feces) to form multi-cue representations of individuals. Responses between samples were …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The northern quoll, Dasyurus hallucatus, is part of a suite of threatened native northern Australian mammals that have inappropriate fire regimes listed as a threatening process. However, fire responses reported for D. hallucatus are inconsistent among different studies. Based on the theory that the fire response of D. hallucatus will depend partially on habitat quality, we postulate that home range in high quality savannas of the north Kimberley will be small, post-breeding male mortality low and prey resources little affected by fire. Based on previous research we hypothesised that male D. hallucatus would respond to fire more than females. By …

Behavioral Health Referral Patterns Of Medical Providers, Olivia Grace Glasgow Jul 2026

Behavioral Health Referral Patterns Of Medical Providers, Olivia Grace Glasgow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Collaboration between medical and behavioral health providers has been growing consistently through the years. Offering behavioral health services in a medical setting helps individuals who may not otherwise seek mental health care. Much of the available literature focuses on patient characteristics in referral patterns; however, current evidence does not provide much guidance for medical providers to improve their collaboration with behavioral health providers. The present study assessed referral patterns of medical providers serving patients with different presenting problems and with patients who have received prior prescriptions of psychotropic medications. Medical providers were randomly assigned to view four 1-min videos of …

The ability to win contests is crucial for securing the valuable resources individuals need to survive and reproduce. Fighting ability can thus be a vital determinant of fitness, and much research has been carried out to characterize the traits that influence fighting ability, or resource-holding potential (RHP). RHP is known to be influenced by a wide range of traits including morphology, physiology, vigour and, more recently, skill. These traits are typically analysed in isolation to identify their individual contributions to winning fights. However, relatively little is known about how different RHP traits may interact and potentially trade off against one …
