Words Of War: The Rhetorical Weapons Of Folklore After October 7, Steve Siporin
Words Of War: The Rhetorical Weapons Of Folklore After October 7, Steve Siporin
Jewish Folklore and Ethnology
The chant “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” became well known after the beginning of the Israel-Hamas War (October 7, 2023) due to its widespread use at anti-Israel demonstrations and on news broadcasts, social media, and YouTube videos. A retort that mocked the inability of demonstrators who espoused the slogan to answer the questions “Which river? Which sea?” also circulated widely. Noncombatants on the domestic front relied on these two items of folklore (among others), a chant and a retort, to support their aims and satisfy their emotions. This essay traces the origins of each of …

Introduction: The Folklore And Ethnology Of Antisemitism, Simon J. Bronner
Jewish Folklore and Ethnology
A global rise in incidents and beliefs in the twenty-first century that monitoring and polling organizations label “antisemitic” raises several questions addressed by contributors to this special issue. A basic one is definitional regarding discourse about the shifting meaning of antisemitism in light of post-Holocaust events and digital age communication. A historical question is whether contemporary forms of antisemitism are connected to or a break from the term’s nineteenth-century roots. Related to that issue in modern discourse is whether antisemitism is an umbrella concept or separate from anti-Judaism, anti-Jewish, anti-Israel, and anti-Zionism movements. The materials of folklore—both as esoteric forms …

Empowerment Or Oppression? College Students’ Interpretations Of Sex And Relationships In The Popular Media, Nicola Mcclung, Riana Pella
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Scholars have long emphasized the harmful effects of overtly sexist and oppressive media images on young people’s understandings of sex and relationships. Yet, this emphasis on explicit harm leaves a gap in understanding how college students interpret subtle, hidden, and ambiguous media messages. To address this gap, we asked 196 California college students at a large public university to critique a range of mainstream media content— from overtly oppressive, to affirming of nondominant gender identities, to containing mixed messages about empowerment and oppression. Responses were coded using our media literacy scoring guide for assessing students’ ability to critically analyze media …

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
Death has been a major topic in children’s and adolescent literature , which has invited scholarly discourse over different ages. While death was very commonly featured in the puritanical texts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it was also deemed to be a subject too sensitive for the genre of children’s literature in the early twentieth century(Aries 1975), due to a combination of factors such as lowered child mortality rate and heightened concern for childhood as a special social category. However, contemporary children’s and adolescent literature focuses on death as an important part of human life, and invites discussions on …
Constructing Meaning With First Graders Using Wordless Picturebooks During Interactive Read-Alouds, Madison Weeter
Constructing Meaning With First Graders Using Wordless Picturebooks During Interactive Read-Alouds, Madison Weeter
Theses and Dissertations
Wordless picturebooks are an underutilized tool in elementary classrooms despite growing recognition as a valuable literacy tool. Research remains limited on how wordless picturebooks influence meaning-making during interactive read-aloud discussions. The guiding question for this study was: "How do first-graders and their teacher construct meaning during three interactive read-alouds of wordless picturebooks?" This qualitative study was conducted in a first-grade classroom. Data was collected through audio and video recordings of three interactive read-alouds facilitated by the teacher-researcher. Recordings were transcribed and analyzed using reflective thematic analysis (RTA). Six themes were created from analysis of the data: (a) cracking the code, …

Multitrophic interactions can strongly influence the structure and functioning of ecosystems, but how plant diversity influences the direction and predictability of multitrophic interactions across agricultural and natural ecosystems remains unclear. Using 149 field studies across five continents, we found that, on average, increasing plant diversity tended to exert differential top-down and bottom-up effects in croplands versus grasslands and forests. Organic and nonorganic croplands exhibited 846 and 148% higher invertebrate natural enemy-to-herbivore abundance ratios under increased plant diversity, consistent with top-down control patterns where predator gains cause herbivore declines, enhancing crop outcomes. In grasslands and forests, increasing plant diversity was associated …

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
Early childhood education is inextricably linked to the role of adults in every aspect of its process. In addition to formal classroom learning, storytelling with a storyteller is another activity that involves adults. The dialogic interaction between storyteller and children fosters the creation of meaning. This study examines how storytelling, as an interactional practice, can dynamically construct meaning together between storyteller and children. Sixty-one kindergarten children participated in this study during a one and half hour storytelling activity. The qualitative and interactional approach used in this study focused on moment-to-moment exchanges during the naturally occurring storytelling event. The findings indicate …

Between Promise And Power: Artificial Intelligence, Shareholder Activism, And The Corporate Governance Of The Next Generation, Pierluigi Matera
Journal of Science & Technology Law
Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to influence the dynamics of corporate governance, with shareholder activism emerging as a particularly dynamic and contested domain of transformation.
Institutional investors are already leveraging sophisticated AI-powered tools to enhance decision-making and manage risk. At the same time, AI offers new possibilities for smaller and traditionally marginalized shareholders. By enabling real-time monitoring and strategic analysis, AI can amplify the power of individual investors—especially younger cohorts who combine technological fluency with values such as environmental sustainability and diversity—to shape identity-driven proxy campaigns. Although not AI-driven, the campaign led by Engine No. 1 against ExxonMobil illustrates how …

Exposing The Wizard Of Oz: Transparency And Testing Of Artificial Intelligence Systems, Henry H. Perritt
Journal of Science & Technology Law
The press and media, elected officials, some high-tech entrepreneurs, and a new breed of “ethicists” are calling loudly for governments to regulate artificial intelligence (“AI”), especially generative AI, popularized by ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Much of the clamor is ill-informed about the technology and based on exaggerated concerns about its risks. Nevertheless, the pressure for regulation is real and is already evoking governmental responses. Transparency requirements are far better than command-and-control regulation. The technology is far too new, however, for any form of command-and-control regulation. Would-be regulators need to take a deep breath and sit back for a while to …

Innate immunity is increasingly recognized as a driver of neurodegeneration, although pathogenic mechanisms are incompletely understood. Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is an inflammatory myeloid neoplastic disorder caused by activating somatic mutations in MAPK pathway genes, most commonly BRAFV600E, in myeloid precursors. A subset of patients with LCH develop progressive neurodegeneration (LCH-ND). We generated a human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) model from patients with somatic hematologic mosaicism for BRAFV600E. Brain macrophages/microglia from LCH iPSCs exhibit unique disease-specific pathogenic features. Stepwise differentiation identified hematopoietic progenitors as hyperproliferative, whereas brain macrophages were apoptosis resistant. Through application of cerebral organoids and a humanized …
