Effect Of The Nitrogenous Fertilizer Level On The Performance Of Bulls Grazing On Common Pangola Grass (Digitaria Decumbens Stent.) At Two Stocking Rate Levels, L R. Valdes, A Perdomo
Effect Of The Nitrogenous Fertilizer Level On The Performance Of Bulls Grazing On Common Pangola Grass (Digitaria Decumbens Stent.) At Two Stocking Rate Levels, L R. Valdes, A Perdomo
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A study was made of the effect of nitrogenous fertilization and stocking rate on the live weight gain and the composition of the carcass of bulls grazing on pangola grass. Treatments were five nitrogen levels: 80, 160,240, 320, and 400 kg/ha/year, each with stocking rates of 4 and 6 animals per hectare. No nitrogen level effect was found during the rainy season, while in the dry season the major levels of 240 kg/ha produced greater gains of live weight (P < 0.001). Animals that were submitted to stocking rates of 6 animals/ha gained less and the production per hectare was significantly greater (P < 0.01 ). Animals of higher levels of nitrogen had more adipose carcasses. The results suggest that the increased levels of nitrogen applied in the rainy period influenced the growth of grass and the animals during the succeeding dry period.

Effect Of High Nitrate Fertilization On The Yield And Biological Value Of Grasses Tested By Common Vole, Slawomir Pronczuk, Janina Gnat, Tadeusz Szuperski
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The effect of different fertilization doses ( 4 x 60, 4 x 120, and 1 x 480 kg N/ha) on the yield of grasses and their basic chemical composition as well as on the growth efficiency and health of animals fed those grasses was studied. Yield of grass during three following years was higher from the fields fertili_zed 4 x 120 and 1 x 480 kg N/ha, when compared to 4 x 60 kg N/ha. No differences were found between 1 x 480 kg N/ha and 4 x 120 kg N/ha. Growth ·efficiency of the common voles which were fed …
Forage Production With Intensive Fertilization And Sprinkler Irrigation For The Supply Of A Dairy Farm Working On An Industrial Scale, Gerhard Weinreich, Wolfgang Richter, Jurden Gellrich, Manfred Meyer
Forage Production With Intensive Fertilization And Sprinkler Irrigation For The Supply Of A Dairy Farm Working On An Industrial Scale, Gerhard Weinreich, Wolfgang Richter, Jurden Gellrich, Manfred Meyer
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The development and the results of the Dedelow cooperative farm for crop production testify the successful agricultural policy pursued in the GDR. Intensification measures, such as mechanization, fertilization and irrigation, brought about a stable growth of production and form the basis for further economic success. At the same time it becomes obvious that cooperative farmers and farm workers have developed in a way that enabled them to master the processes prevailing in large-scale crop and animal productions from the technical as well as organizational points of view, even at a growing intensification of production.
The Effectiveness Of Mineral Fertilizers On Meadows In The Western Ukraine, V D. Gorb, M T. Yarmolyuk
The Effectiveness Of Mineral Fertilizers On Meadows In The Western Ukraine, V D. Gorb, M T. Yarmolyuk
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In the western parts of the Ukrainian SSR, the effectiveness of mineral fertilization of cultivated pastures depends on the type of soil, the forage plant stand, and the rates of fertilizer applied. Without irrigation, nitrogen fertilization on a slightly loamy meadow soil was highly effective. The yield increment per 1 kg N applied at rates of 60-240 kg/ha was 25- 1 7 kg in the case of dry matter yields of 7.45-10.14 t/ha. On highly acid medium-loamy pseudogleyed soddy podzolic soils, cultivated pastures gave much lower dry matter yields, namely 2.06-4.27 t/ha. Nitrogen fertilization is highly effective at higher rates …
Results Of Pasture Management 1n The Medium-Altitude Mountains Of The Gdr, Henrich Olschewski
Results Of Pasture Management 1n The Medium-Altitude Mountains Of The Gdr, Henrich Olschewski
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Pasture management in the County of KarlMarx-Stadt, which is considered representative of the medium-altitude mountain areas in the German Democratic Republic, is used as an example to demonstrate the results that were obtained when using the method for grazing efficiency determination as proposed by FALKE in 1927. Long-term and large-scale determination of grazing efficiency has contributed to the intensification of pasture managernc·nt. The increasing division of labour between crop production farms and those of animal production is a characteristic feature of industry-like production in agriculture. This requires exact commodity-and-money relations for pasture farming as well. New principles of pasture management …
Young-Cattle Rearing Along Industrial Lines And Pasturing In The Gdr, H Kleiber, F Morchen, F Lemme
Young-Cattle Rearing Along Industrial Lines And Pasturing In The Gdr, H Kleiber, F Morchen, F Lemme
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Young-cattle rearing along ind us trial lines involves a general increase ofrearing standards. When pasturing large herds of young cattle it is difficult to achieve high live weight gain. Factory-like milk production requires not only optimal live weight development of the heifers but also an excellent state of health of the animals' legs. The latter is achieved more easily through pasturing than by way of indoor rearing of the youngstock. The intensification of young-cattle rearing includes the intensification of pasture rearing as well. Young-cattle rearing along industrial lines brings up new problems to be solved by technological research workers.
Studies Regarding The Influence Of Weather Conditions On The Performance Of Grazing Cattle, W Rotschke, W Lampeter
Studies Regarding The Influence Of Weather Conditions On The Performance Of Grazing Cattle, W Rotschke, W Lampeter
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In a pasture trial with cattle youngstock the influence of weather conditions on the live weight gain was studied. Comparisons between the weekly average in global radiation and the weight gain showed that for each 100 cal/ cm2 • d -1 the daily live weight gain increased by 80 g per animal, and under extreme weather conditions the increase in live weight gain even amounted to 219 g per animal and day. On a pasture farm of 590 cows an average weekly increase in global radiation by 100 cal/ cm2 • d -1 resulted in a rise in milk performance …

Behaviour And Efficiency Of Animals On Intensively And Extensively Managed Pastures, Jan Sinkovic, Frantisek Bures
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Results of investigations conducted from 1971 to 1973 have shown that the cattle in the mountainous regions of Czechoslovakia graze mainly from between 4.00 and 5.00 to between 9.00 and 10.00 a.m. and from between 5.00 and 8.00 to 9.00 p.m. On intensive pastures the dairy cows gave 25. 95 % of their time to grazing in the same place and 5.5 % to grazing in walking. For this the young cattle needed 24.32 and 12.19 %, respectively. On extensive pastures the respective values were 16.1 and 15. 5 % for dairy cows and 19.56 and 23.74 % for young …
Comparison Between Free Grazing With Artificial Shade And Controlled Grazing With Natural Shade On Milk Production, J Ugarte, I Dominguez
Comparison Between Free Grazing With Artificial Shade And Controlled Grazing With Natural Shade On Milk Production, J Ugarte, I Dominguez
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
One hundred sixty crossbred Holstein cows were used in the middle of their lactation during the hot season. A completely randomized design was employed to compare: (A) free grazing with artificial shade ( open stables with concrete floors), and (B) controlled grazing with natural shade (trees). Pangola grass (Digitaria decumbens Stent.) was fertilized with 120 and 35 kg/ha of N and P2O5 , respectively. Stocking rate was 5 cows/ha without additional supplementation. There were no significant differences in pasture availability or live weight changes. Milk production was higher with controlled grazing (6.0 vs. 5.2 kg/day) and number of cows in …
The Herding Efficiency Of Electric Fences In Cattle Pastures As Influenced By The Operating Principle, Erhard Geithner, Wolfgang Lange
The Herding Efficiency Of Electric Fences In Cattle Pastures As Influenced By The Operating Principle, Erhard Geithner, Wolfgang Lange
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
An interdisciplinary team studied the herding efficiency of electric fences as influenced by the operating principle. As a result of this work, an electric fence implement with direct discharge of capacitors was developed. This implement supplies fence wires, up to 40 km in length, with adequate current impulses. The demands on the herding efficiency of electric fences are increasing with the concentration of both crop production and animal production. As a result of the transition to industry-like methods of production, successfully accomplished by way of cooperation, in our socialist agriculture grazing herds consist of about 250 to 300 cows or …
Intensive Use Of Pasture By Sheep In Southland, New Zealand, A J. Harris, M J. Hickey
Intensive Use Of Pasture By Sheep In Southland, New Zealand, A J. Harris, M J. Hickey
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Production from pastures containing white clover is described for the southern region of New Zealand. An outline is given of a selfcontained grazing experiment in which district practice at a high ewe stocking rate is compared with a moderate rate with an induced high lambing percentage. Yields of animal products and pasture utilisation patterns are presented and these demonstrate advantages of fitting animal requirements as closely as possible to pasture production. Yield increases are possible from improved plant varieties and it is suggested that the incorporation of these into efficient animal systems will lead to further productivity increases.

Interrelationships Of Pasture Production, Pasture UtilizaTion And Animal Production From Grazed Pastures On Kangaroo Island, South Australia, P R. Gibson
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Pasture dry matter production, crude utilization and availability data are presented for two treatments (annual- and perennial-based pasture) in a larger stocking rate experiment carried out on the Kangaroo Island Research Centre, South Australia. There was no significant effect of stocking rate on mean annual pasture production for the four-year experimental period although some within-season correlations (both positive and negative) were observed. The mean efficiency of wool production in relation to pasture production and rainfall increased with stocking rate up to 17 sheep/ ha highlighting the biological efficiency of high stocking rates on these pastures.
Stocking Rate And The Ecosystem: Some Soil-Plant-Animal Interrelationships On Annual Pastures In South Australia, Edward D. Carter
Stocking Rate And The Ecosystem: Some Soil-Plant-Animal Interrelationships On Annual Pastures In South Australia, Edward D. Carter
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Merino wethers were grazed continuously for five years on an annual pasture at the Waite Agricultural Research Institute in the Mediterranean environment of South Australia to assess the soil, plant and animal responses to, and financial returns from, five stocking rate treatments ranging from 7.4 to 22.2 sheep per hectare. The experiment highlighted the biological and economic inefficiency of low stocking rates. Not only was pasture production increased by increasing the stocking rate but production of wool per head of sheep was not significantly affected except at the highest stocking rate. Wool production and wool value increased almost linearly with …
Possibilities Of Raising Grassland Yields And Sheep Production By Means Of Intensive Nitrogen Fertilization, Jozef Kvietok
Possibilities Of Raising Grassland Yields And Sheep Production By Means Of Intensive Nitrogen Fertilization, Jozef Kvietok
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Application, after every grazing cycle, of 40 and 80 kg of nitrogen per hectare of sheep pasture, respectively, raised pasture yields to several times the level achieved in the unfertilized control. The fertilized herbage contained larger quantities of nitrogen compounds, with a trend to further increase in the following years. In variant A (40 kg N/ha) conversion of fertilizer nitrogen into plant matter was more efficient. In variant B (80 kg N/ha) we found a better balance of herbage regrowth over the whole grazing season. The amount of animal products produced in the individual variants correlated with the quantity and …
New Cultivation Method And Mode Of Utilization Off Orage Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus L.), Zdzislaw Gonet
New Cultivation Method And Mode Of Utilization Off Orage Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus L.), Zdzislaw Gonet
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A new method of sunflower cultivation was tested in a field experiment over one year. At 70 cm row spacing it is possible to use the harvester-chopper without crop yield going down. Spring seeding for a density of 200,000 plants/ha is the most favourable approach. The proper plant density at other seeding times (catch cropping) has to be ascertained in further experiments. Because of the remarkable increase of dry matter and nutrient contents from the beginning of flower to the stage of yellow pollen basket, sunflower grown for silage should be harvested only at this later date. Further investigations into …

Effect Of Planting Methods On The Establishment Of Panicum Maximum Jacq. On Natural Pastures, C Padilla, L Sanchez, J Sarroca, G Febles
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Six planting methods were studied for the establishment of guinea grass on natural pastures (Andropogonea) minimizing mechanical soil labour and burning. Methods essayed were: asexual plant cuttings and/or botanical seeds, planted in furrows, harrowing or not before furrowing, and the latter type of seeds broadcast on soils already ploughed and harrowed or only harrowed. The best establishment was obtained when seed.s were broadcast, guinea grass replacing natural pasture species in 78 to 94 % when the soil was only harrowed and when ploughed + harrowed before sowing, respectively. Dry matter yields of broadcast guinea ranged from 5 to 6 t/ha …

Methods Of Oversowing Perennial Soybean (Glycine Wightii) Into Pangola Grass (Digitaria Decumbens) And Native Pasture, Marta Monzote, T Hernandez
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Four sowing methods: (1) disk harrowing and broadcast sowing, (2) broadcast sowing and disk harrowing, (3) planting with direct sowing machine, and (4) broadcast sowing, were compared to measure the establishment capacity of Glycine wightii cv. Tinaroo in (a) pangola grass (Digitaria decumbens) and (b) native pastures (Bothriochloa/Dichanthium mixture). A random block design with four replications was used. The germination was higher with direct sowing (80 and 110 plants/m2) and lower in broadcasting (8 and 15 plants/m2) in (a) and (b), respectively. All the treatments were considered as established six months after sowing, although showing different percentages of …

This period between the earliest and the latest varieties of orchard grass was 22-23 days, while the difference between …
Some Problems In Establishment And Production Of Pastures On The Eroded Tea Lands In The Mid-Country Region Of Sri Lanka, P A. Chadhokar, D A. Lecamwasam
Some Problems In Establishment And Production Of Pastures On The Eroded Tea Lands In The Mid-Country Region Of Sri Lanka, P A. Chadhokar, D A. Lecamwasam
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
There is no doubt that the mid-country region of Sri Lanka (300-1000 m elevation) offers a great scope for dairy farming on a subsistence level because of its favourable climate for the growth of both animals and pastures. This will create more self-employment and will greatly help in bridging the gap between supply and demand of milk in this country. However, to achieve these objectives it is essential to solve problems relating to the establishment and management of pastures under zero-grazing system and ensure a year-round supply of good-quality feed for the high-yielding milk animals. The added advantages of grassland …

Development And Evaluation Of The Introduction Of Gramineae In Cuba, R Hernandez, R Machado, J Menendez
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Cuba has a great endemism in its flora, and more than 400 grass species, but not prominent native plants for animal feeding in extensive production conditions. Pasture introduction started in Cuba more than 300 years ago and has been used to improve grasslands, but it was only since 1962 that an organized introduction programme has been carried out. In accordance with this programme, more than 2,000 accessions have been introduced, including 470 grasses. Australia is the country that has supplied most of these introductions, Africa, Asia and America being the continents in which the most outstanding introductions were originated. The …
Grain Supplements For Breeding Ewes In Continuous Grazing Systems, William G. Allden
Grain Supplements For Breeding Ewes In Continuous Grazing Systems, William G. Allden
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Two suppleme.ntary feeding systems were compared. When breeding flocks were provided with purchased barley grain during the prelambing and post-lambing periods each year there were significant increases in ewe body weights, lamb weights, lamb production/unit area, and the amount of pasture present. However, when the grain had to be provided from the grazing area there was no suggestion of any advantage in substituting a barley crop for an area of pasture. These contrasting results indicate that the assessment of animal production systems based on the integration of pasture grazing and grain supplementation should take into account the source of grain …

Evaluation Of Quality Factors In Warm Season Forages, Warren G. Monson, Glenn W. Burton, Wayne W. Hanna
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Improved forage quality is a feasible objective. Coastcross-1 bermudagrass, Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers., selected for high dry matter digestibility, has consistently enhanced the performance of the animals consuming it. Variation in quality factors of other species, particularly Paspalum notatum var. Saurae Parodi and Pennisetum americanum (L.) K. Schum., makes it possible to improve digestibility. Pearl millet varieties with improved animalproduction potential have been developed and released for farmer use. The varieties have
been selected for higher digestibility and short stature, with reduced stem fractions. The assessment of the digestion of fresh forage permits evaluation of the effects of other factors, …
Estimating The Digestibility Of Herbage By Means Of An In Vitro Technique Based On Cellulase, Kurt Nehring
Estimating The Digestibility Of Herbage By Means Of An In Vitro Technique Based On Cellulase, Kurt Nehring
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A rapid method based on cellulase was devised to estimate the digestibility of feeds. The method is easily applicable and readily reproducible; the standard error of the values is small. The digestibility coefficients established by means of cellulase (DCceBJ were found to be somewhat lower than the in vivo values; the differences go up as the vegetation advances. As the lagging behind of the DC reveals a marked dependence on the crude fibre content, it should be possible to translate to the animal the results obtained by means of the cellulase method. On account of its rapidity and sensibility this …

Forage And Feedstuff Analysis With Infrared Reflectance Spectro/Computer System1, J S. Shenk, K H. Norris, R F. Barnes, G W. Fissel
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
An infrared reflectance spectro/computer system (IRSCS) has been established at The Pennsylvania State University to evaluate the nutritional quality of forage and feedstuffs. Studies with alfalfa forage clearly show that the reflectance spectral curve of the forage is a composite curve consisting of various chemical constituents in the forage such as water, protein and cellulose. Chemical constituents are not measured directly by IRSCS but calibration prediction equations are developed from samples with known chemical constituents and animal response data. After this is completed, forage samples can be analyzed for multiple chemical constituents and animal responses in less than 2 minutes. …
