Relationships Between Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities And Environmental Conditions In Headwater Tributaries Of The Pend Oreille Lake Watershed, Idaho, Devlin Mee

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

Benthic macroinvertebrates are widely used indicators of stream condition, and their communities respond to thermal and land-use conditions in headwater streams. This study characterized macroinvertebrate biomass, community composition, and diversity across forested headwater tributaries of the Pend Oreille lake watershed in northern Idaho, and examined their relationships with summer temperature, land development, and road proximity. Samples from thirteen streams collected in 2024 were identified to genus, measured, and converted to estimated biomass using published length–mass regressions; ten streams had recovered temperature loggers. Because environmental variables were characterized once per stream, all analyses were conducted at the stream level.

Estimated total …

Challenging Agency Deregulation, Todd S. Aagaard Jan 2026

Challenging Agency Deregulation, Todd S. Aagaard

Faculty Publications

The administrative state is experiencing two seismic shifts. First, in recent years, the Supreme Court has issued a series of decisions that significantly curtailed the powers of administrative agencies. Second, President Donald Trump is using administrative agencies to aggressively deregulate in his second term. The conventional wisdom is that the Supreme Court’s recent precedent will facilitate the Trump Administration’s deregulatory agenda.

This Article argues the opposite. Instead of promoting agency deregulation, recent Supreme Court precedent restraining agency authority provides a potentially powerful basis for challenging agency deregulation as administrative overreach. Time and time again, the Court has taken agencies to …

Infant Sensory Gating And A Developmental Cascade To Autistic Traits And Anxiety, Rebecca F Schwarzlose Jan 2026

Infant Sensory Gating And A Developmental Cascade To Autistic Traits And Anxiety, Rebecca F Schwarzlose

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Disruptions to the infant sensory environment can have lasting effects on neural response properties and behavior in both humans and animals. Recent work has begun to highlight an additional factor in infant sensory experience: differences in inhibitory signaling and sensory gating. Converging work from human and animal studies has begun to implicate a developmental cascade by which impaired sensory gating during a sensitive period of neonatal neurodevelopment promotes a phenotype of sensory over-responsivity, autistic traits, anxiety, and other psychiatric challenges. In this Review, I propose a model for this developmental cascade and highlight how differences in infant sensory responsivity represent …

Analysis Of Alternative Oxidase In Non-Angiosperm Plants, Anissa M. Francis Jan 2026

Analysis Of Alternative Oxidase In Non-Angiosperm Plants, Anissa M. Francis

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Alternative oxidase (AOX) is a mitochondrial terminal oxidase that provides an alternative pathway for electron transport, allowing plants to maintain respiratory flexibility under environmental stress conditions. While AOX has been extensively studied in angiosperms (flowering plants), little is known about its distribution and conservation in non-angiosperms. Based on gaps identified in the literature, this thesis investigated the distribution of AOX across non-angiosperm plant lineages. Although AOX is present in many green algae and is therefore considered to be an ancient protein that originated before the existence of non-angiosperm plants, it remains unclear whether the protein is uniformly distributed across these …

Detecting Habitat Use Of Three Endemic Freshwater Fish Of Far Southwestern Australia, Paige Rhiannon Wilson Jan 2026

Detecting Habitat Use Of Three Endemic Freshwater Fish Of Far Southwestern Australia, Paige Rhiannon Wilson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The wetland ecosystems of far southwestern Australia face multiple threats including land clearing, historical cattle grazing, changed hydrology, extensive groundwater extraction, and changed fire regimes. Each is exacerbated by a drying climate, and together they provide a significant challenge to the on-going survival of the freshwater fish in this region particularly fish that are endemic, range restricted, and therefore, more likely to be more vulnerable. This study focuses on three such species: Galaxiella munda, Galaxiella nigrostriata and Lepidogalaxias salamandroides, the latter two of which are known to aestivate.

In order to make conservation decisions regarding management of wetlands for …

Despite their ecological significance, moth communities in the Missouri Ozarks remain poorly documented, particularly within military-managed landscapes. This thesis examined patterns of moth diversity, assemblage structure, and environmental drivers at Fort Leonard Wood (FLW), Missouri, while also assessing the distribution and genetic diversity of species within the genus Papaipema.

Field surveys were conducted from 2019 through 2021 across prairie, savanna, forest, and restoration habitats at FLW using UV bucket traps, sheet trapping, and targeted larval surveys. Across all sampling efforts, 29,116 individual …

Cervical Ligament Systems In Sauropod Dinosaurs: What Support Is There?, Audrey Rose Williams Jan 2026

Cervical Ligament Systems In Sauropod Dinosaurs: What Support Is There?, Audrey Rose Williams

Masters Theses

"Sauropod dinosaurs, such as Diplodocus, have been the subject of numerous hypotheses about what ligamentous structures could have lifted and supported their long necks. Because the supportive tissues rarely fossilize, palaeontologists rely on osteological correlates on the bone to infer their nature. Options for supportive cervical ligaments in sauropods are mammal-style nuchal ligaments, avian-style interlaminar elastic ligaments, reptilian-style supraspinal ligaments, or some combination thereof. This study tested for the presence of a mammal-style nuchal ligament via histological and micro-computed tomography of posterior cervical hemispinous processes of Apatosaurus and Diplodocus, in addition to examining gross morphological features of the cervical vertebrae …

"Refractories are an important group of engineered materials that are critical for sustaining life in the modern age. These products are key components in many industrial processes, such as the production of steel, cement, glass, aluminum, copper, lead, and many others. It is estimated that 50 million tons of refractory products are produced and used around the world every year. Of this, an estimated 28 million tons of spent refractory is generated after use, much of which ends up in landfills all over the globe. By utilizing embodied energy methodologies, a complete sum of energy inputs can be mapped throughout …

The Occurence Of Expansive Clay Soils In Illinois And Their Effects On Shallow Lightly Loaded Foundations, Greg James Gollaher Jan 2026

The Occurence Of Expansive Clay Soils In Illinois And Their Effects On Shallow Lightly Loaded Foundations, Greg James Gollaher

Masters Theses

"The damage caused to shallow foundations and slabs on grade by the shrink-swell activity of clay soils is well documented across the United States. There are local and national resources available that delineate areas that are problematic and areas that are not. These resources paint Illinois as an undemanding foundation environment. However, our experience differs from this. Our experience tells us that damage related to the shrink-swell activity of clay soils is widespread, and commonly severe causing not only cosmetic damage to structures and hard improvements but also affecting the serviceability and longevity of structures. My goal is to accurately …

Aura-Visionpose: Creating Datasets For Vision-Based Pose Estimation, Mohanad Alameer Jan 2026

Aura-Visionpose: Creating Datasets For Vision-Based Pose Estimation, Mohanad Alameer

Masters Theses

"Spacecraft rendezvous is an integral part of many orbital missions, including active space debris removal (ADR) and in-orbit servicing, assembly, and manufacturing (ISAM). Traditionally, rendezvous missions rely mainly on manual ground-based control to perform rendezvous and docking. While this can be effective on an individual basis, it becomes less practical at scale. Autonomous vision-based methods can reduce reliance on human control, and may improve scalability, response time, and reduce the possibility of human error for both ADR and ISAM. This work lays the necessary groundwork for developing a machine learning (ML) model for autonomous rendezvous by creating a labeled image …

Lidar-Based Point-Cloud Human Modeling: Pose Estimation, Body-Parts Segmentation, 6g Localization, And Applications, Omar Rinchi Jan 2026

Lidar-Based Point-Cloud Human Modeling: Pose Estimation, Body-Parts Segmentation, 6g Localization, And Applications, Omar Rinchi

Doctoral Dissertations

"The human body represents a rich source of physiological and behavioral information, where precise analysis of anatomy, body parts, 3D pose, and motion enables cross-disciplinary precision applications. This dissertation formulates this challenge as a human modeling problem, where proposed algorithms convert the human body into a three-dimensional digital twin capturing anatomical structure and pose. These representations are further analyzed using additional algorithms to enable precision applications. To realize this vision, LiDAR sensing is adopted due to its privacy-preserving nature, robustness to lighting conditions, color-blind sensing characteristics, and decreasing cost.

Human modeling using LiDAR is challenging due to sparse, irregular, and …

A Narrative Review Of The Central Neural Control Of Swallowing And Its Implications For Dysphagia Rehabilitation, Kuo-Chang Wei, Tyng-Guey Wang, Ming-Yen Hsiao Jan 2026

A Narrative Review Of The Central Neural Control Of Swallowing And Its Implications For Dysphagia Rehabilitation, Kuo-Chang Wei, Tyng-Guey Wang, Ming-Yen Hsiao

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Swallowing is controlled by a distributed neural network spanning the brainstem central pattern generator, subcortical modulatory circuits, and cortical regions responsible for volitional planning and sensorimotor integration. Evidence from lesion studies, neuroimaging, and neurophysiology demonstrates that dysphagia arises from disruptions at different nodes of this network, producing lesion-specific impairment profiles rather than a uniform swallowing deficit. This network-based perspective has shifted rehabilitation from predominantly compensatory management toward mechanism-driven interventions aimed at restoring physiological function. Behavioral skill-training and resistance-based exercises harness motor learning and cortical plasticity, whereas neuromodulatory approaches—including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), pharyngeal electrical …

Incapacitating The Immigration Courts, Jennifer Lee Koh Jan 2026

Incapacitating The Immigration Courts, Jennifer Lee Koh

SMU Law Review

Amidst the dizzying array of developments taking place under the banner of mass deportation, the second Trump Administration is engaged in a sustained effort to fundamentally transform the country’s immigration courts by incapacitating them. Although the immigration courts have long been the subject of extensive criticism, they also seek to function as neutral forums in which the Department of Justice adjudicates the removability of noncitizens and certain types of immigration relief, governed by due process principles. Rendering those courts unable to perform their functions could potentially give rise to a more fundamental deterioration of even the semblance of due process …

Restorative Reparatory Justice, Inga N. Laurent Jan 2026

Restorative Reparatory Justice, Inga N. Laurent

Nebraska Law Review

As global calls for reparatory justice—aimed at addressing “historical” and ongoing harms stemming from genocide, dispossession, assimilation, and enslavement—grow, this Article explores critical challenges in designing transformative processes of reparation. While a host of transitional justice mechanisms, such as reparations, tribunals, and truth and reconciliation processes are at the forefront of these discussions, a critical examination of their limitations will provide the groundwork for their enhancement. Past applications of transitional justice mechanisms have frequently failed to address root causes of violence, which reinforces State power despite its failures to protect its citizens from that violence, causing secondary harm to survivors/victims.

Forget Me Not? Machine Unlearning’S Implications For Privacy Law, Jevan Hutson, Cedric Whitney, Jay T. Conrad Jan 2026

Forget Me Not? Machine Unlearning’S Implications For Privacy Law, Jevan Hutson, Cedric Whitney, Jay T. Conrad

Articles

Generative AI systems are increasingly relied on and are already actively reshaping how we think about privacy and data protection law. Models ingest and process vast amounts of personal and sensitive data, challenging assurances of compliance with legal frameworks like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) with increasing intensity. Machine unlearning is an emerging tool in practitioners’ attempts to address these challenges: the act of selectively removing or suppressing specific data, such as personal data that a data subject requests be deleted, from AI models as means of complying with legal obligations or …

Substance use disorders (SUDs) remain major public health concerns worldwide, particularly in developed countries. SUDs are characterized by persistent neuroinflammation and synaptic dysfunction in the brain. Despite decades of extensive investigation, the detailed mechanisms underlying SUDs remain elusive. Ferroptosis is a highly regulated cell death process deeply affected by iron metabolism, lipid peroxidation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and antioxidant systems. It has been implicated in multiple neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and ischemic stroke. Recently, emerging evidence has highlighted the role of ferroptosis in drug-induced pathological changes. Various types of abused substances including alcohol, cocaine, …

Senescent Fibroblasts In Aging And Pulmonary Fibrosis, Sara B. Palega, Aiwei Y. Borengasser, Yan Y. Sanders Jan 2026

Senescent Fibroblasts In Aging And Pulmonary Fibrosis, Sara B. Palega, Aiwei Y. Borengasser, Yan Y. Sanders

Microbiology & Molecular Cell Biology Faculty Publications

Aging is a major risk factor for many chronic lung diseases, including Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a fatal and incurable disease characterized by progressive fibrotic remodeling. Age-associated structural alterations, impaired regenerative capacity, and dysregulated cellular signaling collectively create a pro-fibrotic microenvironment. A central driver of this pathological shift is the accumulation of senescent cells, which undergo irreversible growth arrest and develop a robust pro-inflammatory senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Emerging evidence identifies senescent lung fibroblasts as critical mediators of IPF pathogenesis. These cells promote excessive extracellular matrix deposition, myofibroblast differentiation, and tissue stiffening, while simultaneously impairing epithelial regeneration. Together, these effects …
