Puf-Based Digital Money With Propagation-Of-Provenance And Offline Transfers Between Two Parties, Benjamin Bean, Cyrus Minwalla, Eirini Eleni Tsiropoulou, Jim Plusquellic
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Building on prior concepts of electronic money (eCash), we introduce a digital currency where a physical unclonable function (PUF) engenders devices with the twin properties of being verifiably enrolled as a member of a legitimate set of eCash devices and possessing of a hardware-based root-of-trust. A hardware-obfuscated secure enclave (HOSE) is proposed as a means of enabling a PUF-based propagation-of-provenance (POP) mechanism, which allows eCash tokens (eCt) to be securely signed and validated by recipients without incurring any third party dependencies at transfer time. The POP scheme establishes a chain of custody starting with token creation, extending through multiple bilateral …

Information Management / Bim Private Sector Adoption Business Case, Robert Moore
Information Management / Bim Private Sector Adoption Business Case, Robert Moore
Tools
This business case sets out the rationale for adopting Information Management and Building Information Modelling (IM/BIM) within the private sector, aligned with ISO 19650. It explains how a structured, standards-based approach to managing information across the project lifecycle can reduce risk, improve coordination, and protect commercial margins by minimising rework, late changes, and delays. The document highlights that early and targeted investment in people, processes, and digital tools delivers the greatest return, supporting faster approvals, clearer decision-making, more competitive bids, and consistent project delivery. Overall, the business case positions IM/BIM as a practical enabler of productivity, resilience, and long-term competitiveness …

Ecosystem Services Demand In Social-Ecological Systems: Towards A Typology Of Assessment Approaches, Fabio Rubbi
Ecosystem Services Demand In Social-Ecological Systems: Towards A Typology Of Assessment Approaches, Fabio Rubbi
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Assessing ecosystem service (ES) demand remains conceptually fragmented and methodologically inconsistent in social-ecological systems (SES) research due to the lack of a framework linking human preferences to benefits derived from ES fruition. This study develops a systematic typology of ES demand assessment based on an integrative review of empirical studies. We conceptualize demand as emerging from two competing modalities: the consumption of provisioning and cultural services, which may drive ecosystem depletion, and the need for risk reduction through regulating services, which supports ecosystem preservation. Building on this distinction, we identify five valuation approaches, two that directly translate ES value into …

Testing For Dice Control At Craps, Stewart N. Ethier
Testing For Dice Control At Craps, Stewart N. Ethier
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Dice control involves “setting” the dice and then throwing them carefully, in the hope of influencing the outcomes and gaining an advantage at craps. How does one test for this ability? To specify the alternative hypothesis, we need a statistical model of dice control. Two have been suggested in the gambling literature, namely the Smith–Scott model and the Wong–Shackleford model. Both models are parameterized by θ ∈ [0, 1], which measures the shooter’s level of control. We propose and compare four test statistics: (a) the sample proportion of 7s; (b) the sample proportion of pass-line wins; (c) the sample mean …
How Casino Match Play Promotions Can Hook Gamblers (And Non-Gamblers), Brent Evans, Douglas Walker
How Casino Match Play Promotions Can Hook Gamblers (And Non-Gamblers), Brent Evans, Douglas Walker
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Casino operators frequently use promotional gambling vouchers, free play and match play. In the case of free play, customers are offered gambling credits that function much like real money and patrons are able to quickly turn their promotional play into cash without risking their own money. Match play, however, can only be employed at table games and their use necessitates gamblers to wager their own funds. We conduct a thorough analysis of how match play can affect gamblers’ individual behavior. First, we assess the value of match play promotions, which we argue is ambiguous. Then, using behavioral economics concepts, we …
Effects Of Fit Between Promotional Message And Regulatory Focus On Consumers’ Sports Betting Behavior: The Moderating Role Of Consumers’ Familiarity, Koo Yul Kim, Thilo Kunkel
Effects Of Fit Between Promotional Message And Regulatory Focus On Consumers’ Sports Betting Behavior: The Moderating Role Of Consumers’ Familiarity, Koo Yul Kim, Thilo Kunkel
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
The sports gambling industry is an extremely competitive market. To attract more consumers, sports gambling platforms are primarily employing one of two customer acquisition strategies, namely ‘risk-free bet’ or ‘bonus money’ welcome offers. This research is built on regulatory fit theory to investigate the effectiveness of these two welcome offer strategies on consumers’ intentions to act on the offer. We further test the moderating effect of customers’ familiarity with online sports betting on their decision making. Findings of two experimental design studies demonstrate that the presence of regulatory fit between regulatory focus and promotional offers (i.e., message framing) positively affected …
Modeling Network Growth Via Generalized Isospectral Reductions, David Thomas Litster
Modeling Network Growth Via Generalized Isospectral Reductions, David Thomas Litster
Theses and Dissertations
Many real-world networks also exhibit a variety of symmetries. In this thesis we study equitable partitions and isospectral reductions, both of which are generalizations of symmetries. We formalize the relationship between these two types of generalized symmetry through the study of invariant subspaces. We then use recent results about the presence of equitable partitions in real-world networks to develop a network growth model that introduces similar structures, thereby introducing symmetries similar to those in real world networks.
Intrinsic Stability Of Controlled Systems Via Gershgorin-Type Estimates, David Friedbaum
Intrinsic Stability Of Controlled Systems Via Gershgorin-Type Estimates, David Friedbaum
Theses and Dissertations
Time delays are an inherent feature of real-world dynamical systems, arising whenever information, matter, or energy requires non-negligible time to propagate. Even small delays can destabilize systems that are otherwise well behaved, yet most standard control designs--such as PID or LQR--do not explicitly account for them and may fail when delays are present. This thesis investigates the stability of controlled dynamical systems subject to arbitrary time delays and develops new tools to determine when such systems remain stable. Our approach builds on the notion of intrinsic stability, a strong form of global stability introduced by Webb and Bunimovich, which guaranties …
Characterizing Temperature-Dependent Properties Of Fat For Improving High Intensity Focused Ultrasound Simulations, Brian Easthope
Characterizing Temperature-Dependent Properties Of Fat For Improving High Intensity Focused Ultrasound Simulations, Brian Easthope
Theses and Dissertations
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive therapeutic technique that relies on the precise delivery of acoustic energy to ablate diseased tissue. The presence of subcutaneous fat can significantly alter focal accuracy and treatment efficiency due to its distinct thermal and acoustic behavior. This study characterized the temperature-dependent thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, specific heat capacity, acoustic attenuation, and acoustic velocity of human subcutaneous fat to improve pretreatment modeling for HIFU therapies. Measurements were performed using a dual needle probe for thermal conductivity and diffusivity, differential scanning calorimetry for specific heat capacity, radiation force balance for attenuation, and through-transmission methods for …
Game-Theoretically Optimal Strategies In Baseball, William Michael Melville
Game-Theoretically Optimal Strategies In Baseball, William Michael Melville
Theses and Dissertations
Baseball players and their managers make numerous decisions that can have a significant effect on the result of the game. The effectiveness of their decision-making strategies depend on the strategies played by their opponents. For example, throwing a first-pitch fastball down the middle is a good strategy against a hitter who always takes the first pitch, but it is a risky strategy against a hitter who likes to swing at the first pitch and who is good at hitting fastballs. Additionally, any payoff a player receives from playing a strategy comes at the expense of their opponent. A batter cannot …
Play-Based Assessment Of The Cardinal Principle, Allyssa Sonnefeld Leavitt
Play-Based Assessment Of The Cardinal Principle, Allyssa Sonnefeld Leavitt
Theses and Dissertations
Gelman and Gallistel (1986) determined five counting principles that are essential for successful counting, including the cardinal principle where children understand that the last number counted represents the quantity of a set of objects. The traditional How many? task and the Give-n task are the most common tasks that have been used to assess whether children understand the cardinal principle. However, many researchers claim that these tasks either overestimate or underestimate children's understanding of the cardinal principle. Some researchers (Baroody & Pellegrino, 2023) suggest that embedding the traditional How many? task in a game may improve its validity. In this …

The Mechanics And Consequences Of The Löwenheim-Skolem And Compactness Theorems, Adam Murphy
The Mechanics And Consequences Of The Löwenheim-Skolem And Compactness Theorems, Adam Murphy
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The compactness theorem for first-order logic says that for a set of first-order sen-tences to be satisfiable, it’s enough for every finite subset to be satisfiable. We’ll see how the compactness theorem arises from two methods of model construction: first by ultraproducts, and second by Henkin’s method of constructing models from constant symbols. We’ll explore several representative applications of compactness, such as how it can be used to demonstrate that a property is not expressible, establishing limitations on first-order expressibility. The Löwenheim-Skolem theorem says that if an infinite set Γ of first-order sentences has an infinite model, then for all …
