The Truth Effect And Divided Attention By Picture Memorization, Aedan D. Erickson, Caitlin G. Tjeerdsma, Jacob D. Ostergard

Student Work

The truth effect examines an individual’s likelihood to believe new information with repeated exposure. This study analyzed the effects of a secondary memorization-distraction task on the truth effect and whether familiarity with the subject matter increases the impact of the truth effect. We recruited 95 undergraduate, college students to view a slideshow containing four trivia statements under conditions of repeated or single exposure and assignment or no assignment of a secondary memorization-distraction task. The results showed no effect of a secondary memorization-distraction task on the truth effect and no relationship between repeated exposure and validity scores. Participants’ familiarity of subject …

Mbnl Loss Of Function In Smooth Muscle As A Model For Myotonic Dystrophy Associated Gastrointestinal Dysmotility, Janel A M Peterson, Jesus A Frias, Andrew N Miller, Krishnakant G Soni, Yi Zhang, Zheng Xia, John W Day, Geoffrey A Preidis, Thomas A Cooper

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is the most common adult-onset muscular dystrophy and severely affects multiple organ systems, including the brain, heart, skeletal muscle, and gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Despite 80% of individuals with DM1 experiencing GI dysfunction that affects their daily life, the mechanisms of GI dysmotility in DM1 remain an understudied aspect of the disease. DM1 is caused by a CTG repeat expansion in the DMPK gene that, when expressed as an expanded CUG repeat RNA, sequesters and reduces the activity of the muscleblind-like (MBNL) RNA-binding protein family. We developed a mouse line with conditional, smooth muscle-specific knockout of …

Unresectable Angiosarcoma Of The Head And Neck: A Case Report Highlighting Genomic Alterations, Targeted Therapy, And Clinical Response, Vasisht Karri, Samir Dalia

Student Publications

Angiosarcoma of the head and neck is an aggressive malignancy with limited therapeutic options when unresectable. We report the case of a 73-year-old male with advanced scalp and neck angiosarcoma characterized by MYC amplification and high tumor mutational burden. He received a multimodal treatment strategy including dual immune checkpoint blockade (nivolumab and ipilimumab) combined with cabozantinib, followed by paclitaxel and subsequent pazopanib. This approach achieved prolonged disease control exceeding 18 months, with manageable toxicities through dose adjustments and supportive care. Genomic profiling guided therapeutic decisions and highlighted the role of MYC amplification and tumor mutational burden as potential biomarkers for …

Background/Objectives: Neuropathic pain is one of the most severe types of chronic pain. Although it is difficult to manage, it often co-occurs with depression. Yet, no medication addresses the neuropathic pain and depression comorbidity. Therefore, developing integrated treatment strategies that address both pain and depression is a major public health priority and an unmet need affecting millions. Methods: In this study, we investigated the effect of combining a terpene, Beta-Caryophyllene (BCP), and cannabidiol (CBD) on neuropathic pain and associated depression. We employed a chronic constriction injury (CCI) neuropathic pain model and a series of behavioral tests to evaluate …

Molecular Effects Of Glucose On Mir503hg-Regulated Genes In Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Victoria Reid, Barbara Yang, Kyle Russo, Melina J. Sedano, Ramesh Choudhari, Enrique I. Ramos, Shrikanth S. Gadad

School of Medicine Publications

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive breast cancer subtype, characterized by a lack of key hormone receptors in tumor cells. As there are limited treatment options for these patients, it is crucial to understand the underlying mechanisms by which TNBC constantly evolves and evades treatments. In this regard, the pervasive nature of transcription provides a potential reservoir of transcripts, including both coding and noncoding, that TNBC leverages to sustain a proliferative advantage and support tumor growth. TNBC is affected by energy sources such as glucose, which can have a profound impact on gene expression regulation mediated by various …

Baseline Ecg And Cardiovascular Outcomes In People With Hiv: Insights From Reprieve, Aya Awwad, Shashwatee Bagchi, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: With antiretroviral therapy, people with HIV (PWH) have an increased burden of cardiovascular disease. The REPRIEVE (Randomized Trial to Prevent Vascular Events in HIV) trial demonstrated that pitavastatin reduces major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) among PWH at low to moderate traditional atherosclerotic risk. Electrocardiographic abnormalities are common in PWH, but little is known about their association with MACEs. We sought to examine whether baseline electrocardiographic abnormalities are associated with increased MACE risk among a global primary cardiovascular disease prevention cohort of PWH in REPRIEVE.

METHODS: In this observational analysis, entry electrocardiographic abnormalities were adjudicated and classified as major or …

The Inferred Functional Connectome Underlying Circadian Synchronization In The Mouse Suprachiasmatic Nucleus, K L Nikhil, Bharat Singhal, Daniel Granados-Fuentes, Jr-Shin Li, István Z Kiss, Erik D Herzog

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Circadian rhythms in mammals arise from the spatiotemporal synchronization of ~20,000 neuronal clocks in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Although anatomical, molecular, and genetic approaches have revealed diverse SCN cell types, how network-level wiring enables their synchronization remains unclear. To overcome the challenges of inferring functional connectivity from fixed tissue, we developed Mutual Information & Transfer Entropy (MITE), an information-theoretic framework to infer directed cell-cell connections with high fidelity from long-term live-cell imaging. Recording and analyzing 3,290 h of clock gene expression from 8,261 SCN neurons across 17 mice, we uncovered a highly conserved, sparse SCN network organized into two asymmetrically …

Exploiting Large Language Models For Diagnosing Autism Associated Language Disorders And Identifying Distinct Features, Chuanbo Hu, Wenqi Li, Mindi Ruan, Xiangxu Yu, Shalaka Deshpande, Lynn K Paul, Shuo Wang, Xin Li

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Diagnosing language disorders associated with autism is a complex challenge, often hampered by the subjective nature and variability of traditional assessment methods. In this study, we explored large language models (LLMs) to overcome the speed and precision obstacles by enhancing sensitivity and profiling linguistic features for autism diagnosis. This research utilizes natural language understanding capabilities of LLMs to simplify and improve the diagnostic process, focusing on identifying autism-related language patterns. We showed that the proposed method demonstrated improvements over the baseline models, with over a 10% increase in both sensitivity and positive predictive value in a zero-shot learning configuration. Combining …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Peer support has demonstrated efficacy in alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression, while fostering empathy and mitigating burnout among healthcare professionals. Given the considerable demands of residency training, there is a strong rationale for resident-led peer support interventions. However, structured programs to train residents for such leadership roles remain limited. Our objective was to implement a peer support leader training program for residents, evaluate its perceived effectiveness, and identify common themes discussed in sessions. Between June 2021 and June 2023, we performed a longitudinal, prospective cohort survey study of Emergency Medicine (EM) and EM/Pediatrics (EM/P) residents participating in a novel …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The intracellular processing route used by type I conventional dendritic cells (cDC1) for cross-presentation of viral- or tumor-associated antigens remains controversial. One model proposes that captured antigens exit from damaged phagolysosomes and enter the cytosol, where they are processed for presentation by MHC class I molecules (MHC-I). This model relies on proteasomal degradation and TAP-dependent peptide transport into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) for loading by the peptide loading complex (PLC). An alternative model proposes a vesicular route in which captured antigens are retained and processed within an endocytic compartment. A compelling argument favoring the cytosolic model is the dramatic loss …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

INTRODUCTION: Myeloid malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), exhibit overlapping pathophysiology. Chronic MPNs can transform into secondary AML (sAML), which is associated with poor prognosis and limited treatment options. However, the process and prognostic significance of leukemic transformation remain incompletely understood.

METHOD: Through a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, we showed that genetic liability to MPN significantly predicts the risk of developing AML, establishing MPN as the precursor to leukemia. To identify mediators of this risk, we integrated population-level plasma proteomics data, identifying 55 proteins associated with MPN. Upon integrative analysis with the BEAT-AML cohort, …

Dynamic Generation Of Contextual User Interface Controls From Content Analysis, Sönke Rohde, Alan Ross, Carsten Hinz Dec 2025

Dynamic Generation Of Contextual User Interface Controls From Content Analysis, Sönke Rohde, Alan Ross, Carsten Hinz

Defensive Publications Series

User interfaces for content generation and manipulation can be limited by static controls or ambiguous inputs that may not provide precise, context-specific tools. The disclosed technology relates to a system that can programmatically generate adaptive user interface (UI) controls based on content analysis. This system can analyze a corpus, such as an image or document, to perform semantic inference and derive manipulable properties. These properties can be mapped to declarative UI definitions for controls, such as sliders or dropdown menus, which can be rendered by a host application. This process can provide a user with context-aware controls tailored to specific …

The Ψ-Theory: Unifying Cosmology And Quantum Mechanics Through A Dynamic Temporal Metric, Valerii Y. Vorobiev

Defensive Publications Series

We propose the Ψ-Theory, a novel ontological framework that addresses fundamental crises in modern cosmology by redefining the nature of time and gravity. The theory posits a primary scalar (or, fundamentally, tensorial) field Ψ, which is not a traditional force field, but a metric of the local density of causal interactions (quantum "Acts") in the network of reality. From this field, the observable geometry of spacetime and the phenomenon of gravity emerge as secondary, effective descriptions. The core principle is that time is not a background entity, but a dynamic, relational metric of causal connectivity. The Ψ-field dictates the local …
