From Curiosity To Creation: How Design Thinking Cards Sculpt Ai-Infused Learning Materials, Felicitas Hartung, Zeenar Salim

Teaching Repository of AI-Infused Learning

This paper introduces Design Thinking Cards as a facilitation tool to support educators in creating AI-infused learning experiences. Grounded in human-centered design, the cards integrate two complementary frameworks: the Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) principle and the Design Thinking model developed by Stanford’s d.school. HITL highlights the role of human oversight and feedback in shaping machine learning processes, while Design Thinking emphasizes iterative problem solving through the stages of empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. By combining these approaches, the Design Thinking Cards guide instructors through iterative cycles of developing, refining, and implementing generative AI teaching projects with learners at the center of …

Biology ETDs

Population genomic data are becoming an essential component of the best available science used by conservation professionals to make management decisions to preserve biodiversity in a rapidly changing world. The proliferation of high-throughput sequencing technologies has made generating genome scale data feasible for non-model organisms that are of conservation concern. In addition to applicability in conservation science, genomic data enable the exploration of basic questions related to species evolution. To that end, this body of research exemplifies the applied and basic utility of genomic data and is focused on two federally-protected minnows endemic to the Gila River basin, Loach Minnow …

Marine Heatwave Co-Occurrence Between Estuarine And Coastal Systems, Ricardo U. Nardi, Piero L. F. Mazzini, Ryan K. Walter Dec 2025

Marine Heatwave Co-Occurrence Between Estuarine And Coastal Systems, Ricardo U. Nardi, Piero L. F. Mazzini, Ryan K. Walter

Physics

Marine heatwaves (MHWs), prolonged periods of anomalously warm ocean temperatures, pose significant threats to marine ecosystems. While MHWs in coastal and estuarine systems have been studied separately, their spatial coherence remains significantly understudied. Here we analyze over 2 decades of high-frequency in situ temperature data from 54 stations across 20 U.S. estuaries and 13 coastal buoys to assess MHW co-occurrences. We find that estuarine and coastal MHWs co-occur only ∼21% of the time, a 57% decrease compared to co-occurrence within estuaries (∼49%). Maximum co-occurrence occurs at zero lag, suggesting synchronous synoptic-scale atmospheric forcing, likely via air–sea heat fluxes. Co-occurrence shows …

Flawed Design And Selection Bias In Critical Care Randomized Controlled Trials (Rcts): The Patient Safety Risk Of The "Rct Mimic"., Lawrence A Lynn

Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles

Over three decades, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for critical care syndromes such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis, and community acquired pneumonia (CAP) have repeatedly produced non-reproducible results, at times leading to high-impact reversals of global protocols when later studies revealed harm. These trials enroll patients using expert-derived threshold sets intended to define the syndrome. This analytic review presents the first historical and formal methodological review and mathematical analysis of such RCT using causal symbolic modeling (cSM), directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), and do-calculus. The review includes landmark publications, task-force threshold sets, and case examples, including the 2025 REMAP-CAP corticosteroid …

Free Will, Responsibility, And The Corporation: A Critique Of Corporate Criminal Liability, Declan C. Lawson

William & Mary Law Review Online

Part I of this Note will provide background on the relationship between free will and criminal liability and discuss the extant theories underpinning corporate criminal liability. Part II will examine the shortcomings of those theories. Part III will argue for a free will-based approach for apportioning blame for corporate criminal conduct. Such an approach is both theoretically and practically justified.

Comparison Of Cost, Accessibility, Speed, And Efficiency Of Modern Microbial Detection Methods For Wastewater Surveillance And Their Potential Benefits In Low-Resource Settings, Gloria Rodriguez, Davida Smyth

Masters Theses (Archived)

During the COVID-19 pandemic, wastewater surveillance helped predict the emergence of several waves of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, sometimes before clinical detection, alerting public health authorities to investigate. As human fecal material can contain the nucleic acids of both DNA- and RNA-based pathogens, new methods isolating total nucleic acid (TNA) can be used to detect a wider variety of pathogens and genetic targets. Wastewater Surveillance is faster, cost effective and scalable. This study compared three commercially available TNA extraction kits: Promega Rapid Capture Beads (Rapid), Maxwell RSC Enviro Total Nucleic Acid (Vacuum), and Nanotrap® Microbiome A and B Enviro Water Protocol …

Parental feedback further supported these findings, highlighting increased confidence and more positive attitudes toward the school environment. While external variables influenced …

Writing A Phd Thesis In Counterpoint To Its Traditional Map: Writing To And With Theories And Concepts Encountered In The Doing Of Doctoral Studies, Mary Catherine Garland Dec 2025

Writing A Phd Thesis In Counterpoint To Its Traditional Map: Writing To And With Theories And Concepts Encountered In The Doing Of Doctoral Studies, Mary Catherine Garland

Professional Services

This article offers insights into challenges encountered in the landscaping of a doctoral thesis written in counterpoint with its traditional map. The inspiration behind the author’s thesis is a sixteen-year-old withdrawn from an English Further Education college on her first day. Consequently, the thesis troubles seemingly rigid orthodox academic structures and writing conventions, which potentially act as a barrier to learning. Animating the (non)methodological approaches of a PhD thesis written for everyone denied the opportunity of fulfilling their academic potential, this paper engages with speculative and experimental approaches to research, asking not ‘what is’, but ‘what if’.

The Educational Impact Of Taking Ethnic Studies In K12: A Mixed Methods Study Of Students In Ethnic Studies Courses, Lesley A. Rivera

Masters Theses (Archived)

This transformative mixed-methods study investigates the academic and personal impacts of Mexican American Studies (MAS) courses on South Texas high school students, addressing critical gaps in Texas-based research. Quantitative measures were combined with qualitative data from semi-structured interviews to reveal a comprehensive picture of MAS outcomes. While quantitative results show moderate academic gains, they also reveal MAS’s powerful role in fostering cultural understanding and student engagement. Qualitative analysis reinforces these findings through five intersecting themes: personal growth, representation, engagement and opportunities, empowerment, and challenges. Guided by Critical Race Theory, LatCrit, and Chicanx Studies, the research demonstrates that ethnic studies courses …

The Growing Teacher Shortage, Heather L. Chessher Dec 2025

The Growing Teacher Shortage, Heather L. Chessher

Masters Theses (Archived)

Even before the global pandemic, but especially after COVID-19, the teacher retention numbers have been on the decline and the number of teachers who express teacher burnout has steadily risen. Teachers continue to face behavioral issues, work overload, and high student achievement expectations. Teaching is a stressful, intensive, and complex job that requires teachers to facilitate and support students’ personal growth and enable school performance (Johnson et al., 2014). Years of overload and high occupational stress often send teachers to early retirement and sometimes into different professional fields. Through a qualitative case study approach, this research explores the reasons some …

Cloud-Top Entrainment Instability In Marine Stratocumulus Clouds: Observational Evidence From Collocated Microphysical, Turbulence, And Radiation Measurements, Inyeob La, Raymond Shaw, Holger Siebert, André Ehrlich, Jae Min Yeom, Seong Soo Yum

Michigan Tech Publications

Marine stratocumulus clouds (MSC) strongly influence Earth's radiation budget, yet the mechanisms governing the descent of entrainment-affected (diluted) parcels, and the relative roles of cloud-top entrainment instability (CTEI) and longwave radiative cooling (RC), remain debated. Using helicopter-borne observations from the ACORES campaign that combine high-resolution in situ vertical profiling with co-located remote sensing, we examine vertical variations of microphysics, thermodynamics, and the entrainment interfacial layer (EIL). When CTEI conditions were strongly met, inhomogeneous mixing (IM) traits appeared near cloud top and transitioned to homogeneous mixing (HM) traits deeper in the cloud layer, accompanied by localized elevations of cloud base, signatures …
