Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
Researchers in the counseling field have alerted practitioners and counselor education professionals to the need for enhanced training related to supporting individuals with disabilities, namely intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD; Feather & Carlson, 2019). As more individuals with IDD attend college, these emerging adults are specifically in need of counselors with skills and competencies to support their mental health. This paper describes a collaborative, mutually beneficial initiative between a counselor education program and an inclusive postsecondary education program to address the scarcity of personnel prepared to work with individuals with IDD.

Mental Health Professionals’ Non-Clinical Roles As Informed By Attachment: A Systematic Review Of Research, Jennifer L. Tipton, Casey A. Barrio Minton, Brittney N. R. Irion
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
While attachment informs the quality of the therapeutic relationship, which is the basis of all therapeutic work for professional counselors and related mental health professionals (MHPs), less attention has been given to the role of attachment in MHPs’ non-therapeutic roles such as engagement in professional development, teaching, and supervision. This systematic review analyzed 33 research studies that investigated MHPs’ attachment in the context of non-therapeutic roles, including professional development, supervision, and teaching. Findings are discussed in the context of four emergent themes: Professional Functioning and Well-being, Supervisory Relationships, Self-awareness, and Empathy. A Content Analysis Of Doctoral-Level Counselor Education Remediation Policies, Lena Salpietro, Madeline Clark, Rosalyn Zacarias
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
We conducted a Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) content analysis of handbooks (N=54) from CACREP-accredited doctoral counselor education and supervision programs. The purpose of this study was to better understand how counselor education programs communicate remediation policies and procedures and what specific elements are included in handbooks. Our findings revealed that while dismissal policies, dispositions, due process, and evaluation procedures were commonly included, there was significant variability in the inclusion of other domains, such as retention policies and definitions of remediation. Notably, only one handbook included all ten documented domains. The study highlights a need for more comprehensive and standardized remediation …

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Dr. Katie Jarriel is a Clinical Associate Professor in the John Martinson Honors College, as well as the director of the Computing for Community Collaboratory (C3) Research Generator. Her research combines archaeology and computer modeling to better understand the histories of human– environment interaction. Project oCEANIC (Computing Environmental Adaptation and Navigation in Island Communities) applies these methodologies to a study of traditional maritime navigation in Oceania. Undergraduate student researcher Allyson Dinwiddie, who has contributed to this research, is interviewed along with Jarriel.

Medical Minds, Literary Voices: The Intersection Of Healing And Storytelling In Russian Literature, Emily Doris Gervais
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
This project examines the intersection of medicine and literature through the works of Russian physicians who became influential authors. Focusing on Anton Chekhov’s Sakhalin Island, Vikenty Veresaev’s Memoirs of a Physician, and Mikhail Bulgakov’s A Young Doctor’s Notebook, this research highlights how their medical experiences shaped both their personal narratives and broader societal criticism. By analyzing the variation of both implicit, individual-centered stories and systemic, sociopolitical commentaries, the project reveals how these authors brought a unique clinical perspective to Russian literature. Their attention to detail, moral and ethical concerns, and use of medical language enriched their writings, imbuing their prose …
