Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Imagine being in a university that functions in a place-based culturally regenerative way. In this concept paper, the authors bring together theory, practice, and experience, in the service of transforming universities towards place-based cultural regeneration. At present, Australian universities operate using an economic philosophy of neoliberal corporatism characterised by hierarchical management strategies, competitive tendencies, patriarchal values, and discourse characterised by bifurcation or binary thinking. These features illustrate a worldview that is entangled with the meta crises of our times such as climate change, species loss, hatred/intolerance, and unfathomable violence. The authors consider ways of moving towards a place-based, Indigenous-informed, practical, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Planktivorous reef fishes are thought to possess unique morphological traits to feed on small, evasive prey. Despite the multitude of family-level studies addressing this hypothesis, results remain inconclusive. Our goal, therefore, was to determine whether specialised traits and patterns of morphological convergence are congruent across a comprehensive phylogeny of reef-associated fishes. We measured 15 morphological traits from 815 images of 299 species in 12 globally distributed families. Using phylogenetic comparative methods, we mapped the evolution of plankton-feeding across lineages; assessed the effect of planktivory on body shape; and tested for the presence of morphological convergence among planktivores. We demonstrate that …

Rigidity Of Class Ability Grouping Practices In Australia, Olivia Johnston, Christa Norris, Wei Zhang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Inequity in education is pronounced when data is used to form rigid class ability groups. Rigid grouping means that students with backgrounds that disadvantage them in education can be locked into low ‘ability’ class groups. In contrast, informed and flexible use of data can support adaptable and heterogeneous ability grouping, which better accommodates the diverse needs and potentials of students. This approach ensures that students are not permanently categorised but can move between groups as their abilities and needs evolve. Research drawing on international data sources like the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) oversimplifies the range of ability grouping …

Social Exclusion Of Refugees With A Disability In Australian Society Within The Context Of Healthcare Quality Theory And E-Health, Hossein Adibi

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The phrase social exclusion came to Australia via Britain. Discussion on 'inclusion and exclusion' mainly focus on those individuals and groups living in poverty. Socially excluded occurs as a result of many factors, based on sex, race, ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation, and disability. Until 2012 people with a disability were excluded from Australian' resettlement programs representing a significant discrimination concern. As a result of strong opposition to this issue, the policy changed in 2012 and the number of refugees with disabilities increased. This in turn led to more ethnic diversity of people with disabilities within NDIS. However, since NDIS …

The Effect Of Climate Change On Different Types Of International Visitors In Western Australia, Ghialy Yap, Charbel Bassil

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This paper examines the effects of climate change on tourist arrivals to Western Australia, which we classify according to the purpose of their visit (business, education, holiday, visitors of friends and relatives (VFR), and employment). We construct a temperature variability indicator that measures the deviation of extreme temperatures from the average temperature. Overall, the results reveal that temperature variabilities have long-term diminishing effects on tourist arrivals, specifically VFR, visitors for employment and education. Surprisingly, unusually low-temperature variability negatively affects tourist arrivals more than unusually high-temperature variability. This suggests that cooler temperatures than expected could lead to tourists’ dissatisfaction and reduce …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Multisource remote sensing data has gained significant attention in land use classification. However, effectively extracting both local and global features from various modalities and fusing them to leverage their complementary information remains a substantial challenge. In this paper, we address this by exploring the use of transformers for simultaneous local and global feature extraction while enabling cross-modality learning to improve the integration of complementary information from HSI and LiDAR data modalities. We propose a spatial feature enhancer module (SFEM) that efficiently captures features across spectral bands while preserving spatial integrity for downstream learning tasks. Building on this, we introduce a …

Us-China Competition, World Order And Economic Decoupling: Insights From Cultural Realism, Naoise Mcdonagh Jan 2025

Us-China Competition, World Order And Economic Decoupling: Insights From Cultural Realism, Naoise Mcdonagh

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study examines how US-China geopolitical rivalry is reshaping global economic order. It identifies gaps in existing research on hegemonic state behaviour and presents an alternative theory based on cultural realism. This latter builds on realism by arguing that political culture influences the intensity of geopolitical tensions. Drawing on domestic political discourse, this study demonstrates that US and China geopolitical tensions are driven by conflicting national political cultures that generate competing visions of global order, reducing the capacity of international institutions to sustain cooperation. This divergence manifest in geoeconomic competition and weaking multilateralism. Theoretical expectations suggest an emerging geoeconomic world …
