Aim: We decipher global patterns in seagrass growth and structure to advance seagrass science, facilitate multidisciplinary research, and promote effective management strategies and policy development for seagrass habitats. Location: Global. Time period: 1975 to 2024. Major taxa studied: Seagrasses—marine angiosperms. Methods: A global data set on seagrass total biomass, total net primary productivity (NPP), shoot density, and percent cover was compiled across 11 genera. We tested how these variables change across seagrass genera, life-history strategy, and geographic location; and then modelled the environmental drivers (temperature, nutrients, light availability) of the patterns observed. Results: The mean (±SE) total biomass of seagrasses …
Indigenous Wisdom For Regeneration: Reducing The Knowledge Gap, Sandra Wooltorton
Indigenous Wisdom For Regeneration: Reducing The Knowledge Gap, Sandra Wooltorton
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The author of this paper uses Indigenous-informed literature and explores the use of a Multispecies Collaboratory to hear place-based voices and practice ways of knowing often denied value by the mainstream. In the Indigenous nation of Australia, the author sets out to learn ways to practice environmental education that build upon aeons of experience at caring for and responding to Country. The starting point is a 2024 paper with three claims, which are: a culture of epistemic violence and denial support the mainstream paradigm which silences Indigenous voices; an Indigenous-informed way of being with living-places can inform the core of …

Environmental concerns, such as human alteration, pollution, and the effects of climate change, have had a significant impact on the survival of beaches worldwide. In Ghana, beaches face numerous threats stemming from human activities, such as deforestation, construction, sand mining, open defecation, and disposal of waste into the sea. Moreover, other factors such as strong winds, high waves, and the effects of climate change contribute to beach vulnerability. This paper is part of a broader study that investigated the environmental attitude and behavior of the Fisher Folks along coastal beaches in the Winneba Municipality in Ghana. Although the broader study …

Joint Estimation Of Paternity, Sibships And Pollen Dispersal In A Snapdragon Hybrid Zone, Thomas James Ellis, David Luke Field, Nicholas H. Barton
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Inferring genealogical relationships of wild populations is useful because it gives direct estimates of mating patterns and variance in reproductive success. Inference can be improved by including information about parentage shared between siblings, or by modelling phenotypes or population data related to mating. However, we currently lack a framework to infer parent–offspring relationships, sibships and population parameters in a single analysis. To address this, we here extend a previous method, Fractional Analysis of Paternity and Sibships, to include population data for the case where one parent is known. We illustrate this with the example of pollen dispersal in a natural …

Purpose: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) can cause arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI) or persistent muscle weakness that impairs physical function and return to sport. Deficits in voluntary activation (one method to measure AMI) are thought to contribute to AMI, however, the specific neurophysiological underpinnings remain inconclusive. The primary objective of this study was to explore changes in intracortical excitability (inhibition and facilitation) of the quadriceps representation in the primary motor cortex pre- and post-ALCR. Our secondary objective was to explore changes in hamstrings intracortical excitability pre- and post-ALCR. Methods: Prospective case-series pre-post-ACLR. Single- and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was …

Natural Hydrogen Soil Gas Emissions Near Harvey, Perth Basin: A Comparative Study Of Survey Methods, Krista Davies, Peter W. Haines, Charmaine Thomas, Leon Normore
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Quantifying natural hydrogen soil gas emissions and their controlling factors is critical for assessing hydrogen storage viability and improving exploration strategies. This study provides the first detailed comparison of hydrogen emissions near the DMP Harvey-2 well in the Perth Basin and compares the effectiveness of repeated point surveys and autonomous monitoring in capturing emission variability. Hydrogen concentrations ranged from 0 to >1000 ppm in point surveys, with transient pulses up to 598 ppm detected through continuous monitoring, indicating episodic release. Repeated point surveys successfully captured the overall range of emissions but failed to resolve dynamic processes, such as abrupt flux …

This review examines the increasingly prominent role of mechanics within cancer formation and progression. The extremely varied and contradictory genetic landscape of cancer is in stark contrast to the seemingly universal mechanical characteristics of cancer cells and their tumour microenvironment, and mechanics may be a principal unifying trait of this disease. The tight regulation of innate cell mechanical properties raises the possibility that destabilisation of the cell drives tumour formation in an attempt to restore cell mechanical homeostasis. With losses in cell stiffness more pronounced at the cell nucleus, we hypothesise that destabilisation occurs within the nucleus, likely within the …

Speculative Documentary As World-Building: Contaminated Knowledge And Future-Making, Cassandra Tytler
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In the context of climate emergency and growing mistrust in knowledge institutions, both science and documentary practice have often been positioned as neutral authorities. Yet the knowledge they produce is shaped by political, social, and material conditions. This paper presents a creative practice research project that uses speculative documentary to trouble dominant narratives of truth and objectivity. Rather than rejecting science, it critiques the authority of singular truth claims in both scientific and documentary domains, asking how knowledge is constructed and maintained. The analysis centres on It Will Not Be Pure, a multi-channel video installation created as a form of …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The social brain hypothesis predicts that the relative size of specific brain regions is driven by the cognitive capacity required to manage complex (social) situations. Spiders are intriguing models to test this hypothesis, as sociality is rare in this usually solitary and aggressive group. Here, we used microCT to compare the central nervous system and brain volumes between social and solitary females of the species in two taxonomic groups, huntsman and crab spiders. Overall, we found no difference in relative CNS and brain volume between social and solitary species. However, social huntsman spiders Delena cancerides had larger arcuate and mushroom …

Teacher attrition is a significant issue that has been the subject of much recent critical research and public debate. What is less often explored in the literature is the gendered nature of teaching and the unique struggles female teachers face in the workforce, particularly in remote, regional and rural (RRR) schools. As a historically female-dominated profession, women, particularly teacher-mothers face a distinctive set of barriers to career progression in these schools. We apply a critical feminist lens to qualitative data generated from interviews with 21 teachers from 6 different schools in RRR locations in Western Australia. Data reveals a toxic …

Background: Elevated high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) levels are linked with cardiovascular disease and cognitive impairment, both of which are strong risk factors for late-life dementia (LLD). This study examined the association between hs-cTnI levels below the sex-specific 99th percentile for myocardial injury and the incidence of LLD in older women. Methods: 986 community-dwelling women aged ≥70 years without prior LLD and with hs-cTnI < 15.6 ng/L (stratified into quartiles) were included from the Perth Longitudinal Study of Ageing Women. The primary outcome was incident LLD events, including LLD hospitalisation or death, over 14.5 years obtained from linked health records. Associations between hs-cTnI and LLD outcomes were explored using multivariable-adjusted Cox models, as part of restricted cubic splines. Results: At baseline, participants' mean (±SD) age was 75.2±2.7 years. Over 14.5 years of follow-up, LLD events (n=174, 17.7%), hospitalisations (n=155, 15.7%) and deaths (n=68, 6.9%) were recorded. Compared with those in the lowest quartile (Q1, median 3.1 ng/L), women in the highest quartile of hs-cTnI (Q4, median 7.3 ng/L) had a greater risk of developing LLD-related events (adjusted HR: 1.88, 95% CI: 1.22 to 2.91), hospitalisation (adjusted HR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.04 to 2.64) and death (adjusted HR: 2.27, 95% CI: 1.13 to 4.59), after adjusting for established cardiovascular and dementia risk factors, including apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype. Conclusion: Among older women, hs-cTnI levels below the sex-specific 99th percentile for myocardial injury were associated with an increased risk of LLD events over 14.5 years. These findings suggest that hs-cTnI may identify older women at higher risk of LLD, capturing both cardiovascular and brain health vulnerability in older age.

Background: Immunoglobulin G (IgG) N-glycosylation plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disorders, inflammatory diseases, and viral infections. While various models of serum IgG N-glycosylation have been developed to identify individuals at high risk for relevant diseases, reference intervals (RIs) for the levels of IgG N-glycans have not been established yet. Identifying RIs for serum IgG N-glycans closely associated with biological aging and disease risk contributes to predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM/3PM), which results in improvement of patients’ outcomes, enhancement of healthcare efficiency, and in reducing burden of chronic diseases. This study is aimed at defining the …

The development of low-cost, stable, and efficient hole transport layers (HTLs) is crucial to the advancement of lead-free perovskite solar cells. In this work, a solution-based oxidation process is employed to convert spin-coated copper iodide (CuI) films into mixed-phase copper oxide (CuxO) thin films comprising Cu₂O and CuO. Oxidation occurs under moderate temperatures (200–300°C), leading to uniform, compact, and highly conductive p-type films with tunable bandgaps. Structural, morphological, and optical analysis confirms successful phase transformation, and measurements of Hall effect reveal maximum mobility of holes of 26.7 cm2 V−1 s−1 for double-coated films annealed at 300°C. The Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) has emerged as a vital technological domain, significantly advancing underwater exploration and communication capabilities. At the core of this paradigm is Underwater Acoustic Communication (UAC), which acts as the primary medium for data transmission in underwater environments, including environmental monitoring, security and surveillance, and underwater exploration. Despite its significance, UAC systems face inherent challenges such as limited bandwidth, high signal attenuation, and long propagation delays. These limitations become particularly significant in mission-critical maritime operations, such as warning systems, underwater navigation and control, and diver safety or emergency communications, where timely and reliable data transmission …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The processing parameters of laser melting deposition (LMD) can significantly influence the microstructure and properties of LMD components. Herein, we manufactured TiBw/Ti–6Al–4V titanium matrix composite (TMC) using LMD, aiming to obtain the optimal preparation parameters. The electrical resistivity of the TMC first decreased and then increased, which was related to the microstructural evolution. TiBw network was formed in the matrix during LMD, indicating the in situ reaction of TiB2 during LMD. The reinforcement TiBw was tended to precipitate preferentially during solidification. In situ tensile experiments indicated that LMD TiBw/Ti–6Al–4V exhibited an ultimate strength of 1314 MPa and a plastic strain …

Muscle stretching is widely used in clinical, athletic, and otherwise healthy populations, yet a consensual definition of stretch intensity—a key component of stretch load—does not exist. This is important because the effects of stretch intensity on range of motion and strength are controversial but suggested to affect clinical practice and scientific research. Most commonly, stretch intensity is defined in relation to an individual’s perceived level of discomfort or pain; however, these definitions are problematic for several reasons, including that consensual and objective quantifiable definitions of ‘pain’ and ‘discomfort’ do not exist, perceptions vary widely (and may not be sensed in …

When predation pressure is relaxed, for example, in predator-free conservation havens, populations can rapidly lose antipredator traits. Such trait loss is thought to be accelerated when resource competition becomes the dominant selection pressure in the absence of predation risk. Under these circumstances, antipredator traits may be retained by reducing resource competition through predator exposure (both of which reduce selection against antipredator traits) or by maintaining gene flow with predator-savvy populations. Here, we examine differences in antipredator traits in quenda, Isoodon fusciventer, inside and outside of a conservation haven in which low levels of gene flow and predator exposure have been …

Background: The gut microbiome plays a pivotal role in regulating immunity. Gastric acid suppressants (GAS) are known to alter the gut microbiome and might therefore modify response to immunotherapy in cancer patients. We estimated associations of GAS with recurrence-free survival (RFS) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) in the EORTC 1325/KEYNOTE-054 trial. Methods: Patients with resected stage III melanoma were randomized to receive 200 mg of pembrolizumab or placebo. Pembrolizumab prolonged RFS and DMFS (reported elsewhere). We used Cox models to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for the association between GAS at baseline, and RFS and …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This research investigated how ethical leaders drive employees to experience meaningfulness at work by influencing employees' perception of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). It also examined if employees' skepticism towards CSR moderates these relationships. Conducted in Bhutan, where CSR is legally required but emerging, the study surveyed 797 employees from 15 companies using partial least squares path modeling. Findings confirmed that the perceived CSR mediates the positive link between ethical leadership and meaningfulness at work. Meanwhile, employees' skepticism towards CSR weakens both the positive impact of CSR perception on meaningfulness at work as well as the mediated path. The study highlights …

Designing, programming, and using digital games are highly engaging activities and can be effective instructional approaches for supporting student learning. Often, students are users of the games rather than taking on the role of designers and developers, the latter of which requires computational and design thinking skills. This chapter presents a background on digital game design, the rationale for teaching and learning using digital game design, design tools, and examples of students as designers of digital games with links to curriculum outcomes. Drawing on research, the benefits, topics for inclusion, and pedagogical considerations involved in digital game design are investigated. …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This chapter explores integrating 3D design and fabrication technologies into educational settings, emphasising their potential to enhance student creativity, problem-solving skills, and real-world capabilities. Through using 3D design and fabrication tools such as computer-aided design (CAD) software, 3D printers, laser cutters, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines, students can transition from passive learners to active creators, engaging with tangible projects that connect theoretical concepts and practical challenges. The chapter highlights the importance of supporting teachers in adopting these technologies, addressing challenges such as hardware costs, software accessibility, and teacher training. By progressively increasing project complexity and incorporating real-world applications, educators …
