Gaps in HIV RNA monitoring persist globally impeding the ability to determine clinical progress and outcomes. This study systematically evaluated provider (e.g., guideline non-adherence), system (e.g., laboratory error) and participant-level (e.g., refusal) drivers of missed viral load (VL) monitoring measurements among people with HIV in Kenya. Adults aged 18-65 years were followed across five health facilities in Kenya as part of a clinical trial (NCT#02338739) where HIV RNA monitoring was done routinely. Instances of missed VL despite being indicated per Kenyan guidelines were identified. An algorithm for assessing root causes of missing HIV RNA was developed and generalized linear models …

BACKGROUND: Adults with treatment-resistant late-life depression (TRLLD) have high rates of sleep problems; however, little is known about the occurrence and change in sleep during pharmacotherapy of TRLLD. This analysis examined: (1) the occurrence of insufficient sleep among adults with TRLLD; (2) how sleep changed during pharmacotherapy; and (3) whether treatment outcomes differed among participants with persistent insufficient sleep, worsened sleep, improved sleep, or persistent sufficient sleep.
METHODS: Secondary analysis of data from 634 participants age 60+ years in the OPTIMUM clinical trial for TRLLD. Sleep was assessed using the sleep item from the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale at the …

There exists a complex relationship between steatotic liver disease (SLD) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). CVD is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among individuals with SLD, particularly those with metabolic dysfunction-associated SLD (MASLD), a significant proportion of whom also exhibit features of insulin resistance. Recent evidence supports an expanded role of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) in the pathogenesis of CVD in patients, both with and without associated metabolic dysfunction. VLDL represents the major vehicle for exporting neutral lipid from hepatocytes, with each particle containing one molecule of apolipoproteinB100 (APOB100). VLDL production becomes dysregulated under conditions characteristic of MASLD …

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to quantify the cumulative total and out-of-pocket (OOP) costs for 3 non-metastatic prostate cancer treatment modalities: radiation, surgery, and conservative management at intervals of 1-, 3-, and 5-years post-diagnosis. We predicted these cumulative costs for a typical patient to improve cost transparency, facilitate conversations about potential costs, and to help advance non-metastatic prostate cancer cost evaluation.
METHODS: We used Merative™ MarketScan® Commercial Database data from 2007-2020. The cumulative total costs evaluated from the healthcare sector perspective were patient, clinician, and system/facility costs. We used descriptive statistics to summarize the sociodemographic characteristics of the cohort and a …

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether we can safely and successfully transplant an ovary tissue allograft from a nonidentical donor to her Turner syndrome sister.
DESIGN: Transplantation of cryopreserved ovary tissue, as well as fresh transplantation of ovarian tissue between identical twins, is now well established with numerous reported successful cases. However, there have not yet been any ovary transplants between nonidentical women requiring immunosuppression (ovary allotransplant). This could be a much more common indication for ovary tissue transplantation if safe and reliable immunosuppression were available.
PATIENT(S): A 20-year-old amenorrheic woman with nonmosaic 45-XO Turner syndrome requested ovary tissue transplantation from her …

Age is a significant risk factor for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and identifying brain age patterns is critical for comprehending the normal aging and MCI/AD processes. Prior studies have widely established the univariate relationships between brain regions and age, while multivariate associations remain largely unexplored. Herein, various artificial intelligence (AI) models were used to perform brain age prediction using an MRI dataset (

Extreme Value Theory Analysis Of High Emitter Trends Across Four Us Cities From 1995 To 2021, M. Matti Maricq, Gary A. Bishop
Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications
Extreme value theory provides a direct means to characterize the distribution of high emitters within a vehicle fleet and calculate statistical confidence intervals for comparisons. Defining a “high emitter” as the maximum emitter in a random sample of N vehicles implies in the limit of large N that high emitters follow an extreme value distribution, comprised of three distinct domains. The analysis of over twenty years of roadside remote sensing emissions measurements in Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles and Tulsa reveals clear differences between gasoline vehicle high emitter distributions across pollutants (hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO)), but …

Revisiting Thailand’S Developmental Miracle: The Rate Of Profit, Social Structure Of Accumulation, And Trajectory Of Economic Development Between 1957-1997, Paworn Kiatyutthachart
Asian Review
This article aims to provide an overview of Thailand's economic development trajectory from 1957 to 1997. Based on the Social Structure of Accumulation theory, which posits that a "set of institutions" relates to fluctuations in the rate of profit and economic growth, the Thai economy during this period featured a specific institutional framework that created "long waves" in profit rates. Using a historical analysis approach, the arrangement of the Social Structure of Accumulation of this period includes: (1) the dominance of American "capitalist" development ideas; (2) tight control of planning and policy implementation by technocrats; (3) a tripod structure comprising …
Juridification, Legitimacy, And Authoritarian Survival In Thai Politics From The 2014 Military Coup, Apipol Sae-Tung
Juridification, Legitimacy, And Authoritarian Survival In Thai Politics From The 2014 Military Coup, Apipol Sae-Tung
Asian Review
This article explores the conditions under which authoritarian regimes resort to juridification as a strategy for political survival. It examines why authoritarian governments rely on legal mechanisms despite possessing coercive power. Through an analysis of Thailand’s 2014 military coup and its aftermath, the study argues that juridification—defined here as the expansion of legal control into political domains—is triggered when regimes suffer from low political legitimacy. Drawing on the concepts of legality, legitimacy, and authoritarian adaptation, the article demonstrates how the military-led government in Thailand institutionalised its power through the 2017 Constitution and the National Strategy, both designed to entrench the …

Thailand’S Party Financing Regulation: A U-Turn To Patronage System, Punchada Sirivunnabood
Asian Review
Money is important for the development of political parties. To support the development of parties along with preventing overt corporate influence over parties, the Thai state allocates subsidies from the Political Party Development Fund (PPDF) to eligible party organizations. Beyond the limited PPDF budget, political parties are also allowed to seek their own revenues from other sources such as merchandise sales, fundraisers, and private donations with the maximum of 10 million baht per donor. Based on the qualitative analysis, a series of six focus groups were conducted with party branch members, party MPs, candidates, party staff and ECT officers in …

Asian Review
Deviating from that mainstream and rethinking the Cold War within Asian historical contexts, Chineseness and the Cold War: Contested Cultures and Diaspora in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong, edited by Jeremy E. Taylor and Lanjun Xu, can be recognized as an extraordinary TV series which offers a significant shift from the traditional Euro-centric perspectives on Cold War studies. Instead, it provides a groundbreaking Sino-centric viewpoint that explores the complex and contested notions of “Chineseness” in Southeast Asia and Hong Kongduring the Cold War period.

A “Bangladeshi” Descendant Muslim Community In Northern Thailand Its Formation Process, Mineo Takada
Asian Review
Thailand is a majority Buddhist country. However, there is a Muslim population in some parts of the country. One such community is a so-called "Indian" Muslim community in northern Thailand. In fact, they originally came from East Bengal, now Bangladesh, not India. A large community of such Bangladeshi descendants can be found in Chiang Mai and other groups of them live in some smaller towns in northern Thailand. This paper discusses the migration processes, routes, and settlement processes of a group in northern Thailand. When the author started researching them, they declared themselves "Bangladee" (Thai pronunciation of Bangladesh), but they …
