Using Social Robots To Deliver Behaviour Change Interventions, Leonie Cooper
Using Social Robots To Deliver Behaviour Change Interventions, Leonie Cooper
School of Psychology Theses
The acceleration of technology advancements has resulted in the growth of digital solutions to support with behaviour change in a wide range of domains. Social robots have been explored for their feasibility as agents to deliver established and novel talk-based person-centred behaviour change interventions, such as Motivational Interviewing and Functional Imagery Training (FIT), due to their interactive design and a way to support the growing pressures on health sectors. This thesis builds on previous feasibility work but explores the use of the social robots to support students in changing procrastination behaviours. There is a high prevalence of reported procrastination in …

The Comparison Of Human And Machine Performance In Object Recognition, Gokcek Kul
School of Psychology Theses
Deep learning algorithms have advanced significantly due to better hardware and large training sets, with some claiming they now match or exceed human performance. Recent findings indicate improvements in robustness against Out-Of-Distribution benchmark sets and alignment with human categorisation behaviour. This thesis evaluates various machine learning models to ensure a fair comparison with human performance using principles from comparative psychology. Chapter 2 introduces a psychologically grounded framework for comparing human and machine object categorisation performance, focusing on different presentation times and task complexities. The results indicate that while recent machine learning models have reached or exceeded human performance under optimised …
Engaging Student Nurses In Lifestyle Management: The Role Of Technology-Based Interventions And Mobile Health Applications, Daniela Austin
Engaging Student Nurses In Lifestyle Management: The Role Of Technology-Based Interventions And Mobile Health Applications, Daniela Austin
School of Psychology Theses
Despite their knowledge of health risks and their future role as health promoters, pre-registered nursing students frequently struggle with unhealthy behaviours, including high rates of overweight and obesity. This thesis investigated these challenges in a student nurse population in the South West of England, exploring lifestyle patterns, perceived barriers and motivators, and the potential of mobile health (mHealth) interventions to support behaviour change.Using a multi-method approach across four studies, the research examined students’ current health behaviours, attitudes towards digital tools, and the feasibility and acceptability of theory-driven interventions. The first study, a cross-sectional survey, assessed diet, physical activity, and attitudes …
Soteriological Perspectives In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church From 1930 To 2000, Jungkyu Park
Soteriological Perspectives In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church From 1930 To 2000, Jungkyu Park
Dissertations
The Topic
The soteriology of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, originally shaped in the mid-nineteenth century around the preparation for the imminent Second Coming, has undergone gradual development over time. By the mid-twentieth century, various perspectives emerged due to the continuation of traditional teachings from the late nineteenth century and challenges from external theological influences. In particular, throughout the debate over Last Generation Theology, each theologian defined and interpreted “righteousness by faith” according to their own theological background and historical context. The resulting tensions and conflicts continue to persist to this day.
The Purpose
This study aims to describe and examine …

“Fish In Different Water, To Survive Or To Thrive?” Understanding Direct-Entry Pre-Sessional Chinese Students’ Learning Experiences During Covid-19 And Its Aftermath, Lingyuan Osgathorpe
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
This thesis explores the learning experiences of direct-entry pre-sessional Chinese students in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath, using Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework. Through the metaphor of students as "fish in different water", the research examines how these learners navigate and adapt to new educational environments that often starkly contrast with their prior experiences. The study employs a two-stage semi-structured interview process with student participants, first in China during their online pre-sessional courses and later in the UK during their degree programmes. All interviews were conducted in Mandarin Chinese to ensure linguistic and cultural accessibility. Additionally, expert interviews …

Acute stroke management involves rapid and accurate interpretation of CTA imaging data. However, generalizable models for multiple acute stroke tasks able to learn from unlabeled data do not exist. We propose a linear probed self-supervised contrastive learning utilizing 3D CTA images and the findings section of radiologists' reports for pretraining. Subsequently, the pretrained model was applied to four disparate tasks: large vessel occlusion (LVO) detection, acute ischemic stroke detection, acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage classification, and ischemic core volume prediction. The tasks chosen are particularly challenging as they cannot be directly extracted from the radiology reports findings with keywords. The …

Electronic health records (EHRs) contain diverse patient data with varying visit frequencies. While irregular tensor factorization techniques such as PARAFAC2 have been used for extracting meaningful medical concepts from EHRs, existing methods fail to capture non-linear and complex temporal patterns and struggle with missing entries. In this paper, we propose REPAR, an RNN REgularized Robust PARAFAC2 method to model complex temporal dependencies and enhance robustness in the presence of missing data. Our approach employs Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) for temporal regularization and a low-rank constraint for robustness, enabling precise patient subgroup identification and improved clinical decision-making in noisy EHR data. …

Diagnosis prediction is a critical task in healthcare, where timely and accurate identification of medical conditions can significantly impact patient outcomes. Traditional machine learning and deep learning models have achieved notable success in this domain but often lack interpretability which is a crucial requirement in clinical settings. In this study, we explore the use of neuro-symbolic methods, specifically Logical Neural Networks (LNNs), to develop explainable models for diagnosis prediction. Essentially, we design and implement LNN-based models that integrate domain-specific knowledge through logical rules with learnable weights and thresholds. Our models, particularly Mmulti-pathway and Mcomprehensive, demonstrate superior performance over traditional models …

Clinical trials are typically specified with protocols that define eligibility criteria, treatment regimens, follow-up schedules, and outcome assessments. Temporality is a hallmark of all clinical trials, reflected within and across trial components, with complex dependencies unfolding across multiple time points. Despite their importance, clinical trial protocols are described in free-text format, limiting their semantic precision and the ability to support automated reasoning, leverage data across studies and sites, or simulate trial execution under varying assumptions using Real-World Data. This paper introduces a formalized representation of clinical trials using Temporal Ensemble Logic (TEL). TEL incorporates metricized modal operators, such as “always …

Natural resource management networks cohere due to mutual dependencies and fragment, in part, due to the perceived risks of interaction. However, research on these networks has tended to accept coherence a priori rather than problematizing dependence, and few studies exist on interorganizational risk perception. This article presents the results of a study operationalizing these concepts and measuring the distribution of three types of dependence (capital, legitimacy, and regulatory) and two types of perceived risk (performance and sanction) among nearly fifty stakeholder groups and organizations participating in the management of fisheries in the binational Gulf of Maine. The analysis reveals an …

Phospholipid translocation occurs ubiquitously in biological membranes and primarily is protein catalyzed. Lipid flippases mediate the net translocation of specific phospholipids from one leaflet of a membrane to the other. In the inner (cytoplasmic) membrane (IM) of Gram-negative bacteria, lysophospholipid translocase (LplT) and cytosolic bifunctional acyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) synthetase/2-acylglycerolphosphoethanolamine acyltransferase (Aas) form a glycerophospholipid regeneration system, which is capable of facilitating rapid retrograde translocation of lyso forms of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), and cardiolipin (CL) but not exogenous (host-derived) phosphatidylcholine (PC) across the IM of Gram-negative diderm (two-membraned) bacteria in consequential order lyso-PE = lyso-PG > > lysophosphatidic acid (lyso-PA) >> lyso-PC. …

Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in a multitude of cellular and pathological changes including neuronal loss, axonal damage, gliosis, and loss of motor and sensory function. In 40%-70% of patients, SCI can also trigger the development of neuropathic pain. Our previous study demonstrated that SCI patients who developed autoantibodies to glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) were at increased risk for the subsequent development of neuropathic pain. However, whether GFAP autoantibodies (GFAPab) contribute to the development of neuropathic pain after SCI had yet to be examined.
Objective: Using a mid-thoracic contusion model of SCI in male Sprague-Dawley rats, we examined …

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a clinical prodromal stage of Alzheimer's disease. Enhancing executive functions in patients with MCI could optimize cognitive compensatory mechanisms and slow cognitive decline. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) and its connections to the hippocampus support executive functions, including working memory. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can modulate these connections by engaging theta-gamma coupling (TGC) and may thereby strengthen working memory. This study, "tACS to engage theta-gamma coupling and enhance working memory in MCI" (tACS-MCI), will assess the feasibility and cognitive effects of EEG and MRI-guided individualized tACS. The stimulation will target the prefrontal and temporal cortices …

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a mature T-cell lymphoma that accounts for 10-15% of childhood lymphomas. Despite the observation that more than 90% of pediatric cases harbor the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangement resulting in aberrant ALK kinase expression, there is significant clinical, morphologic, and biological heterogeneity. To gain insights into the genomic aberrations and molecular heterogeneity within ALK-positive ALCL (ALK+ ALCL), we analyzed 46 pediatric ALK+ ALCLs by whole-exome sequencing, RNA sequencing, and DNA methylation profiling. Whole-exome sequencing found on average 25 SNV/Indel events per sample with recurring genetic events in regulators of DNA damage (TP53, MDM4), transcription …

Thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection (TAD) is a life-threatening vascular disorder, and smooth muscle cell mitochondrial dysfunction leads to cell death, contributing to TAD. Accurate measurements of metabolic processes are essential for understanding cellular homeostasis in both healthy and diseased states. While assays for evaluating mitochondrial respiration have been well established for cultured cells and isolated mitochondria, no optimized application has been developed for aortic tissue. In this study, we generate an optimized protocol using the Agilent Seahorse XFe24 analyzer to measure mitochondrial respiration in mouse aortic tissue. This method allows for precise measurement of mitochondrial oxygen consumption in mouse …

Introduction: At the end of 2022, an outbreak of the Omicron BF.7 and BA.5.2 subvariants of SARS-CoV-2 occurred in China. In this prospective cohort study, we investigated the pattern of development of major symptom burden and influencing factors in infected Chinese patients.
Methods: First-time infected outpatients were enrolled from December 7, 2022, to January 11, 2023 (N = 355). The prevalence of symptoms was monitored by a repeated patient-reported quantitative symptom survey over nine months.
Results: At the onset of the infection, the most prevalent symptoms (score ≥1 on a 0-10 numeric rating scale) were fatigue (91.8%), cough (91.8%), …

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common, fatal cancer. Identifying subgroups who may benefit more from intervention is of critical public health importance. Previous studies have assessed multiplicative interaction between genetic risk scores and environmental factors, but few have assessed additive interaction, the relevant public health measure.
Methods: Using resources from CRC consortia, including 45,247 CRC cases and 52,671 controls, we assessed multiplicative and additive interaction (relative excess risk due to interaction, RERI) using logistic regression between 13 harmonized environmental factors and genetic risk score, including 141 variants associated with CRC risk.
Results: There was no evidence of multiplicative interaction …
