Creating And Implementing An Inclusive Metadata Policy, Nicole Lewis, Jeremy Myntti

Faculty Publications

The BYU Library developed an Inclusive Metadata Policy for metadata creators to use when creating and remediating descriptions to be more inclusive. Accompanying the policy is a companion document with recommendations and examples, including links to many external resources. In addition to working with stakeholders in the library to develop the policy, we consulted with the University’s Office of Belonging. This presentation will describe the process we used to create the library policy and recommendations document and share information about how the policy has been implemented.

The Wind In The Willows Effect: Does Age Affect Human Versus Animal Faux Pas Recognition?, Gray Atherton, Lucy Robinson, Lucie Guy-Smith, Liam Cross Jan 2025

The Wind In The Willows Effect: Does Age Affect Human Versus Animal Faux Pas Recognition?, Gray Atherton, Lucy Robinson, Lucie Guy-Smith, Liam Cross

School of Psychology

Children’s literature is rife with anthropomorphic or non-human characters that may be used as a scaffold to teach children about theory of mind (ToM) or the ways in which people think or feel about the social world. In this study, 107 typically developing U.K. school children in Years 1, 3, and 5 (5–10 years of age) completed a human and anthropomorphic ToM test that tested their understanding of faux pas. Specifically, children from these three age groups were given a human version of 20 faux pas stories and an identical animal version of the same stories 1 week apart (with …

Wammes, Michael Milham, Arno Klein, Beth Jefferies, Robert Leech, Jonathan Smallwood

School of Psychology

The goal of psychological research is to understand behaviour in daily life. Although lab studies provide the control necessary to identify cognitive mechanisms behind behaviour, how these controlled situations generalise to activities in daily life remains unclear. Experience-sampling provides useful descriptions of cognition in the lab and real world and the current study examined how thought patterns generated by multidimensional experience-sampling (mDES) generalise across both contexts. We combined data from five published studies to generate a common ‘thought-space’ using data from the lab and daily life. This space represented data from both lab and daily life in an unbiased manner …

The Effect Of Deferring Feedback On Rule-Based And Information-Integration Category Learning, Charlotte E.R. Edmunds, Kathryn Carpenter, Andy J. Wills, Fraser Milton Jan 2025

The Effect Of Deferring Feedback On Rule-Based And Information-Integration Category Learning, Charlotte E.R. Edmunds, Kathryn Carpenter, Andy J. Wills, Fraser Milton

School of Psychology

Previous work has shown that deferring feedback significantly impairs two-dimensional information-integration category learning, often thought to recruit an implicit learning system, but leaves intact unidimensional rule-based learning, commonly assumed to engage an explicit system. These results were taken to support the influential COmpetition between Verbal and Implicit Systems (COVIS) dual-process theory. This conclusion has subsequently been challenged by the finding that this dissociation disappears when the number of relevant dimensions is matched between tasks. However, as well as replacing a unidimensional rule-based task with a two-dimensional conjunction task, a different set of stimuli were used making it unclear which of …

What Can Conjuring Tell Us About Cognition? The Future Of The Science Of Magic, Geoff G. Cole, Gustav Kuhn Jan 2025

What Can Conjuring Tell Us About Cognition? The Future Of The Science Of Magic, Geoff G. Cole, Gustav Kuhn

School of Psychology

During the past 20 years a number of articles have appeared within a field that has become known as the “science of magic.” This subdiscipline of psychology posits that the ancient art of conjuring can be used to develop psychological theories and knowledge, and more than 150 peer-reviewed articles have now been published. In the current article, we critically evaluate what can be considered as the three central tenets of the discipline: that the methods used in magic can be incorporated within experimental research, that magicians have particular insight into human cognition and behavior, and that the deconstruction of magic …

Categorical Perception Of The Index Finger As An American Sign Language Phonological Construct, Lareina Hingson, Jeffrey Jack Green, Brooklyn Lorenc Jan 2025

Categorical Perception Of The Index Finger As An American Sign Language Phonological Construct, Lareina Hingson, Jeffrey Jack Green, Brooklyn Lorenc

Faculty Publications

In American Sign Language, specific handshapes found in the manual alphabet and/or numbering system (such as the pointed index finger—the number “1”—and its bent counterpart—the letter “x”) are assumed to be phonologically distinct under the rationale that bentness of the finger(s) constitutes a phonemic distinctive feature. This study investigates this notion, building on previous behavioral studies of American Sign Language categorical perception of bentness of the index finger. We examined varying levels of bentness between 180◦ and 90◦ using a scale ranging from the signs BLACK and SUMMER in the standard dialect. Experiment 1 found that when presented with all …

Supporting Special Education Teachers Pursuing Board Certification In Behavior Analysis With Quality Supervision, Kathleen M. Randolph, Larry Fisher Jan 2025

Supporting Special Education Teachers Pursuing Board Certification In Behavior Analysis With Quality Supervision, Kathleen M. Randolph, Larry Fisher

Journal of Case Learning & Exceptional Learners

The principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and Special Education are more alike than different, yet special education teachers encounter difficulties finding fieldwork supervision to meet the Behavior Analyst Certification Board’s requirements. Special education teachers spend much of their time consulting with general education teachers to support and change student behavior, observing students in classrooms to identify target behaviors, collecting data to identify the underlying function of behavior to develop high-quality functional behavior assessments, and creating behavior intervention plans using evidence-based practices to promote socially significant behavior for students with challenging behaviors in the school setting. While most Board Certified Behavior …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

The proposed wavelength multiplexed, volume holographic optical coupler uses total internal reflection to guide incident light of a wavelength from 317nm to 700nm. The diffractive elements are recorded with 457nm (transmission holographic recording) and 532nm (reflection holographic recording) lasers in Bayfol HX 200TM photopolymer. The novelty of the device is the particular combination of diffractive optical elements designed so that they can be holographically recorded with two different wavelengths without the need for prisms to facilitate the propagation of the recording beam in the recording layer at angles exceeding the internal critical angle. and will couple three primary colours …

Quantum-Enhanced Battery Anomaly Detection In Smart Transportation Systems, Alexander Mutiso Mutua, Ruairí De Fréin Jan 2025

Quantum-Enhanced Battery Anomaly Detection In Smart Transportation Systems, Alexander Mutiso Mutua, Ruairí De Fréin

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Ensuring the safety, reliability, and longevity of Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries is crucial for sustainable integration of Electric Vehicles (EVs) within Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). However, thermal stress and degradation-induced anomalies can cause sudden performance failures, posing critical operational and safety risks. Capturing complex, non-linear, and high-dimensional patterns remains challenging for traditional Machine Learning (ML) models. We propose a hybrid anomaly detection method that incorporates a Variational Quantum Neural Network (VQNN), which uses the principles of quantum mechanics, such as superposition, entanglement, and parallelism, to learn complex non-linear patterns. The VQNN is integrated with Isolation Forest (IF) and a Median Absolute …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

There is robust evidence for a causal association between spatial thinking and mathematics achievement. However, most research has been lab-based, with spatial training delivered by researchers. We present a teacher delivered, whole-class 6-week spatial training study that involved professional development for practitioners coupled with teacher-led LEGO® block construction training for 6- to 7-year-olds. Using a quasi-experimental design, N = 409 children completed the training and N = 103 children formed a business-as-usual control group. For spatial ability and mathematics, but not spatial language, children in the training condition showed improved performance relative to controls. This finding extends evidence of the …

The Faster Horse Fallacy: How The Law Idealizes Technology, Youngsieg P. Kim Jan 2025

The Faster Horse Fallacy: How The Law Idealizes Technology, Youngsieg P. Kim

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

How does the legal profession understand new technology? Lawyers are involuntary experts in technology: we are not professionally trained in technology like engineers are but must know technology better than the typical citizen does, because the law must regulate how the typical citizen that is, society uses technology. The increasing complexity and variety of technologies that affect everyday life, such as artificial intelligence (AI), make our jobs as involuntary experts in technology all the more important. To prepare lawyers to regulate technology effectively, we must first examine how lawyers understand (or misunderstand) technology in the present. This Article examines a …

Liberty Before Party: The Courts As Transpartisan Defenders Of Freedom, Youngsieg P. Kim

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Like many legislative acts in the United States, election laws are subject to judicial review, often by unelected judges with life tenure. This precipitates what Jacob Eisler calls the counterpopular dilemma. If the laws governing self-rule are dictated by courts that are unaccountable to the people—in the case of Article III judges, by design—they intrude upon democratic autonomy. But without arbiters who are resistant to popular pressure, elections can end up facilitating a mob rule or a tyranny in democratic disguise by enabling elites to manipulate democratic procedures for their own political gain. How, then, can judicial review of election …

Fascist Government Speech, G. Alex Sinha Jan 2025

Fascist Government Speech, G. Alex Sinha

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

On the day he was sworn in for a second term, President Donald Trump issued pardons and commutations to all of his supporters who attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. This sweeping act of clemency gave legal effect to a longstanding grievance: since the attack, which disrupted congressional certification of his 2020 election defeat, President Trump has consistently glorified the attackers and denounced their prosecutors. In defending the clemencies two days after issuing them, President Trump reiterated familiar themes. Once more he refused to acknowledge that he lost the 2020 election, celebrated the patriotism of his supporters, and …

The Reasonable Pregnant Worker, Madeleine Gyory Jan 2025

The Reasonable Pregnant Worker, Madeleine Gyory

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Pregnant workers often need changes to their work responsibilities to stay healthy during pregnancy while earning a paycheck. Congress passed the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) in December 2022, entitling many workers for the first time to “reasonable accommodations” for their pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions—so long as they do not impose an “undue hardship” on their employer. The PWFA dictates that the law’s key terms, “reasonable accommodation” and “undue hardship,” should be construed as they are under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ADA caselaw, and PWFA regulations issued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in April …

Retrospective Recall Of Food Parenting Practices During Childhood, Current Adult Health Outcomes, And Intuitive Eating, Katelyn Bretzel

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Emerging adulthood is a time of exploration, change, and emerging independence, which can make individuals vulnerable to health changes. Previous research demonstrates that food parenting practices (coercive control, structure, and autonomy support) during childhood may relate to health outcomes into adulthood. In the current study, it was hypothesized that intuitive eating during emerging adulthood would be associated with food parenting practices; with coercive control and structure practices hindering intuitive eating, while autonomy support encourages it. The current study tested these relationships further, utilizing retrospective reports of food parenting practices during childhood and examining their relation to intuitive eating, dietary quality, …

Long-Term Assessment Of The Morphological Behavior Of The Beaches North Of Sebastian Inlet, Florida, Aidan O'Gorman

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The morphological behavior of the beaches north of Sebastian Inlet, Florida is investigated by applying Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analyses to a series of beach surveys conducted semi-annually (winter and summer) over a period of fifteen years (2005-2019), with the primary objectives being to 1) determine the extent to which the inlet’s influence to the north typically fluctuates on a short-term basis (e.g. annually), and 2) identify any long-term trends of accretion or erosion that might exist. Each survey is comprised of thirty-one cross-shore profiles that are referenced to permanently installed range monuments (“R-monuments”) that are spaced nominally 305 …
