The Romanticization Of Human-Vampire Relationships: How 'Twilight' And 'The Vampire Diaries' May Prime Young Women To Accept Dating Violence, Natalie M. Bowen

UROP Posters

The first literary vampire can be traced back to 18th century Germany, with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s poem “Die Braut von Korinth,” but the stereotypical features of a vampire are traditionally accredited to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Modern vampires, such as Edward Cullen and Stefan Salvatore of the Twilight and The Vampire Diaries series respectively, have managed to win the hearts of teenage girls all across America with their sex appeal and charismatic nature. According to Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory, individuals learn new behaviors by modeling and imitating the actions of those around them. This comprehensive literature review investigates the connection …

Using Test-Crosses To Investigate Mendelian Inheritance Patterns In Brassica Rapa, Jacob Batson, Amy Nguyen, Ethan Do Jan 2025

Using Test-Crosses To Investigate Mendelian Inheritance Patterns In Brassica Rapa, Jacob Batson, Amy Nguyen, Ethan Do

UROP Posters

The Wisconsin Fast Plants, Brassica rapa, are an ideal model organism for exploring patterns of inheritance and phenotype expression due to their rapid life cycle and observable traits. In this experiment, we examined the controlled crosses between the two phenotypes, anthocyanin-producing (ACN) and anthocyaninless (ANL), to observe allele inheritance. We observed phenotypes in the F1 generation to see if it followed the Mendelian inheritance patterns of homozygous dominant. By planting and watering the plants for two weeks, we tracked their growth and traits of ACN and ANL phenotypes. We used honey bees to cross pollinate the parent ACN and ANL …

Analysis Of Differential Gene Expression In Androgen-Independent Clones Derived From The Mycap Pca Cell Line, Jessie L. Tignor, Melanie Sinanian, Richard Inho Joh, David Gewirtz, Jason Reed

UROP Posters

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is a primary treatment strategy for prostate cancer (PCa), yet many tumors eventually develop androgen independence, leading to treatment resistance. To investigate the molecular changes underlying this transition, we analyzed differential gene expression in four androgen-independent (AI) clones derived from the Myc-CaP prostate cancer cell line using RNA sequencing. Gene expression profiles were compared to the parental Myc-CaP line, and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified using DESeq2 and edgeR. The AI clones exhibited significant downregulation of senescence-associated genes, including Ezh2 and lamin B1, suggesting a loss of senescence-related chromatin repression. Additionally, upregulation of Wnt pathway …

The Built Environment And The Systemic Agenda, Heciel J. Nieves Bonilla Jan 2025

The Built Environment And The Systemic Agenda, Heciel J. Nieves Bonilla

UROP Posters

The built environment in the United States, characterized in large part by suburban sprawl and car-dependent infrastructure, has significant negative impacts on public health, economic mobility, and environmental sustainability. This paper examines the consequences of car-centric development, highlighting its role in exacerbating social and economic inequalities, increasing traffic-related fatalities, and contributing to climate change through excessive carbon emissions. The analysis reveals that a majority of Americans feel forced into car ownership due to inadequate alternative transportation options, leading to financial strain and adverse health outcomes, including obesity and air pollution-related diseases. The historical roots of these development patterns are traced …

Acer Rubrum: Descending Towards Forest Dominance, Elyssa L. Pearson, Christopher M. Gough Jan 2025

Acer Rubrum: Descending Towards Forest Dominance, Elyssa L. Pearson, Christopher M. Gough

UROP Posters

Acer rubrum, more commonly known as the red maple, is a hardwood, late successional species of tree commonly planted for its deciduous nature and vibrant coloring of its leaves in the beginning of autumn (Abrams, 1998). The species is very tolerant of varying light and soil moisture levels and often dominates sub and mid-canopy levels of hardwood forests (Missouri Botanical Gardens). It was hypothesized that as the I moved from an upland location to a lowland location near a wetland that the A. rubrum trees would be more productive and have a greater above ground biomass. This was not …

Examining Sociodemographic And Clinical Factors Associated With Smoking Behaviors Among Black Breast And Gynecological Cancer Survivors, Ida M. Adeso, Jian He, Ashley Turner, Arnethea L. Sutton

UROP Posters

Black breast and gynecological cancer survivors experience poorer outcomes than their non-Black counterparts. Although multifactorial, one contributor may be cigarette smoking behaviors. The purpose of this study was to identify demographic, clinical, and social drivers of health (SDoH) factors associated with smoking behaviors in Black breast and gynecological cancer survivors.

We conducted a secondary analysis of survey data collected from an ongoing cross-sectional study. Summary statistics (e.g., means, frequencies) were computed for all factors of interest. Chi square test of independence, t test, and logistic regression assessed the associations between demographic, clinical, and SDoH factors (e.g., social support) and the …

Still Faces, Different Places: An Assessment Of The Literature On The Face-To-Face Still Face Procedure For Cultural Congruence, Merilyn Arikkat, Leslie B. Lantz, Patricia Kinser

UROP Posters

Cultural understanding is a factor that impacts reliability of research results for observational studies. It is important to include participants of minority groups in research, as many people of color face disproportionate challenges in terms of healthcare access and resources. Within the context of mother-infant attachment, a technique known as the Face-to-Face Still Face procedure can be utilized to observe attachment styles and the bond between a parent and their infant. In order to combat subjectivity within the coding process for this Face-to-Face Still Face procedure, cultural congruence between the participants being observed in the study and the coding researchers …

Conference Papers

The development of photosensitive materials with improved performance and extended functionality is crucial for advancing holographic technologies. This study presents the modification and characterization of a recently reported photopolymerisable glass composition, focusing on achieving an optimal balance between maximizing photosensitivity of the material during recording and minimizing the impact of UV light on the performance of the recorded holographic structure. Building on these findings, the ultimate goal is to develop UV-resistant holographic optical elements for wavefront sensing in space applications. The research approach is based on introducing a photosensitiser with weaker UV absorption than the typically used in this material …

Unprecedented Visible Light-Initiated Topochemical [2 + 2] Cycloaddition In A Functionalized Bimane Dye, Metodej Dvoracek, Brendan Twamley, Mathias O. Senge, Mikhail A. Filatov

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Bimanes, a class of molecules based on the 1H,7H-pyrazolo[1,2-a]pyrazole-1,7-dione scaffold, were first introduced by E. M. Kosower in 1978. In this study, we report the topochemical cycloaddition of diethyl 2,6-dichloro-1,7-dioxo-1H,7H-pyrazolo[1,2-a]pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylate (Cl2B), initiated by visible light. Crystal structure analysis confirmed that the reactive double bonds are parallel and coplanar, in line with the Schmidt criteria for topochemical cycloaddition. Additionally, two other bimane derivatives with different substitution patterns were synthesized and investigated. Our findings suggest that functionalizing bimanes to redshift their absorption maxima into the visible-light spectrum provides a promising strategy for synthesizing substituted cyclobutanes without the need for ultraviolet …

This paper introduces a new class of probability distributions, termed the generated log exponentiated polynomial (GLEP) family, designed to enhance flexibility in modeling complex real financial data. The proposed family is constructed through a novel cumulative distribution function that combines logarithmic and exponentiated polynomial structures, allowing for rich distributional shapes and tail behaviors. We present comprehensive mathematical properties, including useful series expansions for the density, cumulative, and quantile functions, which facilitate the derivation of moments, generating functions, and order statistics. Characterization results based on the reverse hazard function and conditional expectations are established. The model parameters are estimated using various …

A Bayesian Complex-Valued Latent Variable Model Applied To Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Chase J. Sakitis, D. Andrew Brown, Daniel B. Rowe

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

In linear regression, the coefficients are simple to estimate using the least squares method with a known design matrix for the observed measurements. However, real-world applications may encounter complications such as an unknown design matrix and complex-valued parameters. The design matrix can be estimated from prior information but can potentially cause an inverse problem when multiplying by the transpose as it is generally ill-conditioned. This can be combat by adding regularizers to the model but does not always mitigate the issues. Here, we propose our Bayesian approach to a complex-valued latent variable linear model with an application to functional magnetic …

In fMRI, capturing brain activity during a task is dependent on how quickly the k-space arrays for each volume image are obtained. Acquiring the full k-space arrays can take a considerable amount of time. Under-sampling k-space reduces the acquisition time, but results in aliased, or “folded,” images after applying the inverse Fourier transform (IFT). GeneRalized Autocalibrating Partial Parallel Acquisition (GRAPPA) and SENSitivity Encoding (SENSE) are parallel imaging techniques that yield reconstructed images from subsampled arrays of k-space. With GRAPPA operating in the spatial frequency domain and SENSE in image space, these techniques have been separate but can …

Accuracy And Repeatability Of Autorefraction In Young Adults: A Comparison Of Cycloplegic And Non-Cycloplegic Methods, Megan Doyle, Veronica O'Dwyer O'Dwyer, Michael Moore, Síofra Harrington

Articles

Clinical Relevance: Cycloplegic refraction remains crucial in young adults, where accommodative activity can obscure accurate refractive status. Autorefractor repeatability is essential for precise optical correction and refractive error categorisation in clinical and research settings.

Background: Cycloplegic autorefraction is recommended for individuals up to 20 years to prevent hyperopia underestimation and myopia overestimation. This study evaluated differences between non-cycloplegic and cycloplegic spherical equivalent refraction following cyclopentolate hydrochloride (cycloplegic agent) administration in young adults. This study also explored whether this difference varied by refractive status (hyperopia (≥1.00D), emmetropia ( >−0.50, < 1.00D), myopia (≤-0.50D)) or pre- instillation of proxymetacaine hydrochloride and whether cycloplegia improved autorefractor repeatability.

Methods: Participants were 182 young adults (17–30 years) (mean (standard deviation): 21.66 …

The Science Of Gaelic Football Match‑Play And Recommendations For Future Research Directions: A Narrative Review, Kate Timmons, Kieran Collins, Shane Mangan

Articles

In recent years, research in Gaelic football has increased. However, the relationship between training demands and match-play demands is not fully understood and requires further investigation. Due to the stochastic nature of the sport, distances covered in match-play have a positional profile and a reduction in match-play running performance has been observed. The physiological demands of match-play at each level remain underexplored. Likewise, performance analysis is a growing area in Gaelic football, with performance indicators, such as possession, productivity, shot efficiency, and kickouts, providing valuable insights to players and coaches during and post-game. This review synthesises current literature on physical …

Systematic Co-Culture Of Ipsc-Cm And Ipsc-An Promote Co-Maturation In Vitro, William Gregory Terrell Jr. Jan 2025

Systematic Co-Culture Of Ipsc-Cm And Ipsc-An Promote Co-Maturation In Vitro, William Gregory Terrell Jr.

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The cardiac microenvironment is a complex system of multicellular interactions that enables proper heart function. In native heart muscle, sympathetic neurons (SN) and parasympathetic neurons (PSN) modulate the beat rate of cardiomyocytes (CM) to maintain homeostasis. Pluripotent stem cells can differentiate into CM, but differentiated CMs are fetal-like, with a high beat rate, and lack organized sarcomeric structure. Recent reports of co-cultured pluripotent CM/SN pairs have reported electrophysiological changes in the SN (increased upstroke velocity). However, interpretation of these results are obscured by the differences in co-culture parameters between studies (stage of development, co-culture duration, etc.). The goal of this …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

An approach to scalable surface-drifting buoys is needed to enable the high spatial and temporal resolution of oceanographic data that the science and meteorological communities are asking for. With the number of active buoys predicted to increase by a factor of 100 or more, the impact on the environment becomes even more important. Here, we present a pathway to a scalable and sustainable generation of buoys. We identify the main criteria to be used when developing such buoys to be low cost, with reliable data and neutral or even positive environmental impact. For each buoy subsystem—hull, electronics, energy generation and …

An Offline Approach For Frequency Event Detection In Power Systems: Tkeo And Statistical Analysis, Hussain A. Alghamdi, Midrar Adham, Umar Farooq, Robert Bass

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The increasing integration of renewable energy sources in power grids and the transition from conventional thermal-based generation to inverter-based resources for power generation have reduced power system inertia and increased the rate of change of frequency, which constitutes a challenge for frequency stability in modern power systems. These changes necessitate robust frequency event detection algorithms that can rapidly and accurately identify events, providing essential support to maintain stability. This paper proposes a frequency event detection algorithm with six tunable parameters for offline post-processing, leveraging the Teager-Kaiser Energy Operator method and statistical analysis. The algorithm is tested on a dataset comprised …

Examining The Presence And Effects Of Coherence And Fragmentation In The Gulf Of Maine Fishery Management Network, Derek A. Katznelson, Antonia Sohns, Dongkyu Kim, Evelyn Roozee, William Donner, Andrew M. Song, Jasper R. De Vries, Owen Temby, Gordon M. Hickey

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Natural resource management networks cohere due to mutual dependencies and fragment, in part, due to the perceived risks of interaction. However, research on these networks has tended to accept coherence a priori rather than problematizing dependence, and few studies exist on interorganizational risk perception. This article presents the results of a study operationalizing these concepts and measuring the distribution of three types of dependence (capital, legitimacy, and regulatory) and two types of perceived risk (performance and sanction) among nearly fifty stakeholder groups and organizations participating in the management of fisheries in the binational Gulf of Maine. The analysis reveals an …

Spanking And Children's Approaches To Learning: Estimates From A Longitudinal Matched-Sample Design, Jeehye Kang, Christina M. Rodriguez

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

One form of corporal punishment commonly used in the United States is spanking. Spanking is a well-known risk factor for adverse child development, although its influence on children's approaches to learning (ATL) has been largely overlooked. Existing research is particularly limited in inadequately considering multiple confounds and selection biases in children's exposure to spanking. This study examined the links between spanking and children's ATL, using a matched-group design to strengthen causal estimates among children aged 5 to 7.5 (N = similar to 12,800) from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-2011. Entropy-balanced matching mitigated selection and confounding biases, …

U.S. Residents' Current Attitudes Towards Immigrants And Immigration: A Study From The Life In Hampton Roads Survey, Daniel K. Pryce

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Immigration is a fiery topic in U.S. society, as it generally brings to a boil native-born citizens’ disparate attitudes toward immigrants and immigration. While immigration has its fierce supporters and opponents alike, the topic provides fodder for politicians who use it to stoke the fear of an impending “immigrant invasion” among citizens. This is why scholars must regularly undertake empirical studies to assess community members’ views about immigrants and immigration in U.S. society. To add to the contemporary immigration debate, I analyze data from a random sample of 610 respondents who reside in the seven cities that make up the …

The Ten Commandments In Louisiana Public Schools: A Study In The Survival Of Establishment Clause Norms, Ira C. Lupu, Robert W. Tuttle

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In June 2024, Louisiana enacted legislation requiring the prominent posting of the Ten Commandments on the wall of every public-school classroom. In Roake v. Brumley, a federal district court decided that the requirement violated the Establishment Clause. Judge DeGravelles’s lengthy opinion followed the Supreme Court’s 1980 decision in Stone v. Graham, which invalidated a highly similar Kentucky law. In late June 2025, in an opinion by Judge Ramirez, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit affirmed the district court in every significant respect. Texas recently enacted similar legislation, now under the cloud of Roake v. Brumley.

In this …

An Empirical Assessment Of New Jersey's Mistaken Imprisonment Act, Jeffrey Gutman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In their article “Compensation for the Convicted Innocent in New Jersey: Problems and Recommended Solutions,” Professors D. Michael Risinger and Lesley Risinger masterfully recount the history and flaws of New Jersey’s Mistaken Imprisonment Act.1 The professors recommend concrete and common-sense amendments to the Act that, if enacted, would resolve statutory ambiguities, remedy bad public policy, and make more generous an Act intended to benefit the wrongfully convicted, but which often falls short of that goal.

This article will provide empirical and comparative context for the Risingers’ proposals. By examining why the claims of exonerees had been denied or never made, …

Policy Brief: The Hagerty-Scott-Lummis-Gillibrand Stablecoin Bill Would Cause Great Harm To Consumers, Investors, Our Financial System, And Our Economy, Arthur E. Wilmarth Jr.

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

On February 4, 2025, Senators Bill Hagerty, Tim Scott, Cynthia Lummis, and Kirsten Gillibrand introduced a bill that would create a dangerously weak and deeply flawed regulatory regime for stablecoins. Their bill (the “Hagerty bill”) would allow stablecoins to be offered to the public without the protections provided by federal deposit insurance and other safeguards governing banks insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The Hagerty bill would greatly increase the likelihood that future runs on stablecoins would trigger systemic crises requiring costly federal bailouts to avoid great harm to our financial system and economy.

A stablecoin is a …
