Ai-Enabled Anticipatory Handover Predictions In 5g Networks, Ojas Ankush Naik Jan 2025

Ai-Enabled Anticipatory Handover Predictions In 5g Networks, Ojas Ankush Naik

Master's Projects

As users move across network cells in 5G, it is critical to maintain seamless connectivity through efficient and fast handovers. However, as 5G networks have a very dense deployment of cells and higher carrier frequencies, handovers are often more frequent and challenging, leading to failures or the ping-pong effect. In this research, we are going to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to enable predicting handover(HO) events proactively as opposed to reactively, aiming to reduce HO failures and unnecessary handovers. We develop Long-Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Bidirectional LSTM (Bi-LSTM) models to forecast future signal measurements, predict handover trigger points, and compare …

Machine Learning Based Network Traffic Classification With Cosine-Similarity Based Out-Of-Distribution Detection, Prabhat Edupuganti

Master's Projects

The changes occurring in the amount of encrypted network traffic is growing at an alarming rate. This development has created intricate problems in traffic classification which is vital for effective cybersecurity. Moreover, most frameworks seem to ignore OOD detection, model calibration and novel pattern detection as cornerstone problem areas. The due analysis is presented as a machine learning approach aimed at resolving encrypted traffic classification issues and focuses on novel OOD detection and calibration issues. Primary contributions comprise detection of out-of-distribution states using softmax scaled cosine similarity, advanced variance-based feature elimination, and lowering ECE using stringent NNs. This work demonstrates …

Landslide Prediction Using Time-Series Decomposition, Reinforcement Learning-Based Feature Selection And Ml Models, Mohith Sai Venkat Ankem Jan 2025

Landslide Prediction Using Time-Series Decomposition, Reinforcement Learning-Based Feature Selection And Ml Models, Mohith Sai Venkat Ankem

Master's Projects

Landslides pose significant risks to human life, the community, and the environment, yet their prediction remains a complex and unexplored challenge. Existing prediction models often rely on surface measurements and satellite images, neglecting the critical role, in providing deeper insights into landslide analysis. The literature review highlights a lack of research in time series decomposition techniques, despite their potential to improve prediction accuracy. Similarly, feature selection methods that enhance model robustness and precision have not been adequately addressed. This study presents a novel approach to predicting landslide displacement by combining feature selection through reinforcement learning techniques with advanced time-series machine …

Adaptive Cobot Interaction Via Smartwatch Data Fusion For Car Assembly Automation, Riddhik Tilawat Jan 2025

Adaptive Cobot Interaction Via Smartwatch Data Fusion For Car Assembly Automation, Riddhik Tilawat

Master's Projects

In modern car manufacturing, collaborative robots (cobots) work with human operators during shared workcell interactions to maximize production speed and flexibility. Collaboration between humans and robots is safe and effective only when operator intent recognition via a single wrist-worn inertial measurement unit (IMU) is accurate and low-latency. This thesis develops an IMU-only intent recognition pipeline, and is evaluated on three datasets: the public OPPORTUNITY dataset, the Sony Smartwatch Gesture dataset and a custom Samsung Galaxy watch 6 dataset. The proposed framework leverages five step sequence-to-label problems which are stepwise posed as data streams transforming raw IMU data into trainable tensors. …

Real-Time Adaptive Framework For Topic Modeling In Social Engineering Attacks, Manav Bhasin

Master's Projects

Detecting social engineering attempts is crucial for security, as these threats are becoming more frequent and increasingly exploit human vulnerabilities. This research focuses on topic modeling using conversational data from Kevin Mitnick’s ”The Art of Deception” with dialogues that illustrate various social engineering strategies. The dataset comprises manually extracted and synthetically augmented conversations to ensure natural dialogue flow. Two methodologies are presented for utterance-level and global topic extraction: prompt engineering leveraging OpenAI’s GPT-4o-mini, characterized by few-shot learning and chain-of-thought prompting, and Quantized Low Rank Adaptation (QLoRA) utilizing Mistral’s 7B instruct model for efficient fine-tuning. Through experimentation and evaluation, this study …

Simple Vs. Complex Human Activity Classification Via Hybrid Machine Learning Models, Anusha Kukreja Jan 2025

Simple Vs. Complex Human Activity Classification Via Hybrid Machine Learning Models, Anusha Kukreja

Master's Projects

In-depth understanding of the complexity of daily human activities is crucial for building responsive health monitoring and assistive technologies. However, limited research has focused on distinguishing activities based on their involvement level, as most existing work classifies only the type of activity performed. In this thesis, we address this gap by proposing a method to classify human activities as either simple or complex using sensor data from the Opportunity dataset. We define complex activities as those involving object interactions or multiple coordinated movements (e.g., drinking from a cup, cleaning a table), and simple activities as static or low-effort postures (e.g., …

Should Harvard And Other Large Nonprofits Be Taxed?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Jan 2025

Should Harvard And Other Large Nonprofits Be Taxed?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

In this installment of Reflections With Reuven Avi-Yonah, Avi-Yonah examines justifications for exempting Harvard University and other large nonprofits from tax and argues that treating those organizations like large C corporations would not be such a bad thing. The proposal to subject large university endowment investment income to the corporate tax rate of 21 percent instead of the current 1.4 percent rate has engendered significant debate. More recently, President Trump’s threat to strip Harvard University of its tax-exempt status and treat it as a taxable corporation has likewise been controversial. In their recent Tax Notes article, Harvey Dale, Daniel Hemel, …

Eliminating Qbai - One Step Forward, Two Steps Back?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

In this installment of Reflections With Reuven Avi-Yonah, Avi-Yonah explains what makes an effective U.S. tax regime and uses those attributes to evaluate the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. There is plenty to criticize about the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA, P.L. 119-21), signed into law by President Trump on July 4. It increases the deficit by about $4 trillion when the interest costs from the additional borrowing are included, and by about $5.5 trillion if its provisions are made permanent in 2029, like the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act provisions were in 2025. It is distributionally skewed to …

Is The Obbba Compatible With Pillar 2?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

In this installment of Reflections With Reuven Avi-Yonah, Avi-Yonah compares House and Senate sections of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and examines the potential effect on international tax relations. On May 22 the House of Representatives passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). The House version of the OBBBA extended the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act tax cuts but did not significantly change its international provisions. It did, however, contain proposed section 899, which would have imposed enhanced taxation on residents and corporations from countries that have “discriminatory or extraterritorial taxes,” defined to include primarily the undertaxed profits …

Facebook Decision Enables Irs To Seek Cwi Enforcement Against Meta, Stephen L. Curtis, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, David G. Chamberlain

Articles

In this report, the authors explain how the Tax Court’s recent decision in the Facebook transfer pricing case — although widely viewed as a victory for the taxpayer, Meta Inc. — could instead be a Pyrrhic victory because it enables the IRS to pursue a potentially substantial periodic adjustment against the company. The views expressed in this report are solely the authors’ and do not necessarily reflect those of any other person or institution. On May 22 the Tax Court issued its opinion in Facebook. This was the third case, after Amazon and Veritas, in which the IRS tried to …

Do Specialized Medical Llms Demand A Radically New Approach Under The Eu's Medical Device Regulation, Hannah Louise Smith, W. Nicholson Price Ii

Articles

We examine the arguments made by Onitiu and colleagues concerning the need to adopt a “backward-walking logic” to manage the risks arising from the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) adapted for a medical purpose. We examine what lessons can be learned from existing multi-use technologies and applied to specialized LLMs, notwithstanding their novelty, and explore the appropriate respective roles of device providers and regulators within the ecosystem of technological oversight.

The Law Of Energy Abundance, Alexandra B. Klass, Matthew Appel Jan 2025

The Law Of Energy Abundance, Alexandra B. Klass, Matthew Appel

Articles

For the first time in decades, electricity demand in the United States is increasing due to the growth of data centers to power artificial intelligence, new manufacturing hubs, and transportation electrification. At the same time, coalfired power plants have been closing in response to competition from lower cost natural gas and renewable energy. Clean energy is being rapidly deployed to replace fossil fuels but not quickly enough to address concerns about demand growth and grid reliability. Accordingly, there is a growing imbalance between electricity supply and demand in many regions of the country that threatens to increase electricity prices and …

Can Side By Side Work?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

On June 26 Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that a compromise had been reached between the United States and the rest of the G7 (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom), providing that pillar 2 of the OECD’s two-pillar global tax reform project will not apply to U.S. multinationals. As a result, proposed section 899, which would have imposed retaliatory taxation on corporations from countries that apply pillar 2 (and specifically the undertaxed profits rule) to U.S.-based multinationals, was removed from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Us Policy And Pillar 2: The Evolution Of Us Tax Policy Toward Oecd Pillar 2 And Its Global Implications, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

This paper analyzes the United States’ evolving position on OECD Pillar 2, focusing on the Trump administration’s initial rejection and subsequent negotiations to exempt US multinationals from the Undertaxed Profits Rule (UTPR). It examines the legislative and diplomatic strategies that led to international acceptance of GILTI as a valid IIR. The analysis concludes that the resulting compromise preserves US tax sovereignty while maintaining the global framework’s integrity.

Consensus And Conflict Over Context: Select Criminal Law And Procedure Cases From The Supreme Court's 2024-25 Term, Eve Brensike Primus, Elena Schultz

Articles

In its 2024-2025 Term, the Supreme Court emphasized the utility—and necessity—of context-based, fact-sensitive analyses throughout its criminal law and procedure cases. Though the Justices sparred over how to derive meaning from factual, structural, legal, and historical contexts, they tended to agree that courts should not be artificially restricted from considering the breadth of the record before them.

Should The United States Abandon Citizenship-Based Taxation?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

President Trump proposed during the election campaign to end the “doubletaxation” of American citizens living overseas. To which the answer is,what double taxation?Americans living overseas already benefit from three significant provisions thatin most cases prevent any double taxation, and because of these most of them donot have any U.S. tax liability. Those who do are typically wealthier, derive incomefrom investments or from high wages, and are not subject to foreign tax becausethey live in tax havens or in countries that do not tax rich immigrants on foreignsource income, and they do not have any income from their country of residence.

Pathogens And Parasites Of Feral And Managed Honey Bee, Apis Mellifera, Colonies From Oklahoma, Allen Szalanski

Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Managed honey bee populations in the United States have been under stress over the past several decades, probably due to the interaction among multiple biotic and abiotic stressors. While most research has focused on national surveys of honey bee pathogens and parasites, state-specific studies that include both managed and feral honey bee populations may offer additional insights into the factors that contribute to the decline of honey bees. We conducted a survey to detect parasites and pathogens from feral and managed honey bees in colonies in Oklahoma. A total of 253 (89 managed and 164 feral) honey bees from these …

Addressing The Unmet Mental Health Crisis Of Youth In West Englewood, Joallyn Porter Jan 2025

Addressing The Unmet Mental Health Crisis Of Youth In West Englewood, Joallyn Porter

Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University

Chicago youth face significant unmet mental health needs driven by systemic inequalities, community violence, poverty and limited access to care. Alarmingly high rates of anxiety, depression, and trauma impact youth across the city, particularly neighborhoods on the south and west sides, yet far too frequently, stigma, lack of culturally responsive services, and insufficient school and community resources prevent early intervention and effective mental health treatments. Schools, often the first point of contact for mental health support; lack the staffing, funding, and infrastructure necessary to meet growing demands—particularly in under-resourced neighborhoods where families encounter economic and logistical barriers to care. Addressing …

Theoretical Proof Of And Proposed Experimental Search For The Ground Triplet State Of A Wigner-Regime Two-Electron ‘Artificial Atom’ In A Magnetic Field, Marlina Slamet, Viraht Sahni

Physics Faculty Publications

It is experimentally established that there is no ground triplet state of the natural 𝐻𝑒He atom. There is also no exact analytical solution to the Schrödinger equation corresponding to this state. For a two-dimensional two-electron ‘artificial atom’ or a semiconductor quantum dot in a magnetic field, as described by the Schrödinger–Pauli equation, we provide theoretical proof of the existence of a ground triplet state by deriving an exact analytical correlated wave function solution to the equation. The state exists in the Wigner high-electron-correlation regime. We further explain that the solution satisfies all requisite symmetry and electron coalescence constraints of a …

Face ID: A Surveil of Che-Wei Hsu is a lens based artistic investigation and experience into the nature of surveillance in modern society. Through performance, photography, and installation, my work explores the dynamics between being watched and watching, questioning how surveillance influences human behavior and identity. In my art practice, I think about the behavior that people would not do in front of other people or violate the social norm and perform in the public as a way to experience how surveillance influences how we act in the public, for example eating a sandwich on the ladder in front of …

Uncertainty-Aware Meta-Learning For Learning From Limited Data, Deep Shankar Pandey Jan 2025

Uncertainty-Aware Meta-Learning For Learning From Limited Data, Deep Shankar Pandey

Theses

Deep Learning (DL) models have achieved great success in large data fields ranging from computer vision and natural language processing to digital arts and robotics. However, the effectiveness of the DL models is challenged by many real-world limited data problems (e.g., medicine, healthcare, and security intelligence) where data for model training is scarce. Unlike DL models, humans can use the prior knowledge stored in their brains to quickly learn new tasks with limited data. Inspired by such human learning, various meta-learning models have been developed that aim to address the challenge of learning from limited data. However, existing models are …

Environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles were initially conceived as a transformative framework to promote sustainability, accountability and more ethical business practices. Over time, however, the focus of ESG has shifted and several unexpected and inadvertent consequences have begun to materialize. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), what was intended as a guiding light often became a burdensome labyrinth of bureaucratic compliance (Passerini et al., 2024). Instead of empowering these enterprises to drive innovation and develop localized solutions to social issues, current ESG frameworks and subsequent regulations often,
