Empowering Tanzanian Education: Personalized And Accessible Test Preparation, Brian Wiebe, Shiv Jhalani
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
Only 20% of students performed well enough on their secondary exams to continue their A-level studies. This challenge exists due to a lack of resources, classroom overcrowding, and absenteeism of the instructors. The project focuses on improving the pass rate for these national exams; we have built an intelligent quiz generating platform that helps Tanzanian students prepare more effectively for exams by meeting user needs including active recall, answer explanations, increasing difficulty, and filtered studying. Students can select the subject, form level, topic, and the difficulty level, and the platform provides different types of questions, including true/false, multiple choice, and …

Second Language Learning Among Pre-Primary School Children: A Bibliometric Analysis Of Global Research Trends, Fabiola Hassan, Reuben Sungwa
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This bibliometric study investigates global research trends on phonological awareness in second language learning (SLL) among pre-primary school children from 2014 to 2023. The study utilizes data from the Dimensions database, and is guided by three objectives: analysing publication volume trends, identifying leading contributors (countries, institutions, authors, journals), and mapping dominant research themes. It employs the VOSviewer—a software tool for constructing and visualizing bibliometric networks—to conduct co-authorship, co-citation, and keyword co-occurrence analyses. The results show a steady increase in research output, peaking in 2021, reflecting a growing scholarly interest. The United States and United Kingdom dominated research contributions, with institutions—like …

Captured And Enhanced Potentials Of Wild Edible Fruits In Tabora Rural, Uyui And Sikonge Districts, Tabora In Tanzania, Mirau N. Mbise
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Rural communities worldwide supplement food and income through wild edible fruits. However, the paucity of scientific inquiry on the perceptions and uses of wild edible fruits, value-addition, and marketing prompted this study. It interviewed respondents from 274 households in Tabora rural, Sikonge, and Uyui districts in the Tabora region of Tanzania. Descriptive and quantitative analyses were undertaken, and results showed that wild edible fruit activities are perceived to be for women, children, and less-educated people. Furthermore, the findings indicated that 100% (n = 274) of the respondents use wild edible fruits as food, and 48.6% (n = 133) use them …

A Linguistic Analysis Of Humour In Selected Tanzanian Stand-Up Comedy Shows: A Script-Based Semantic Approach, Okoa Simile
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This study analyses humour as a culturally situated linguistic practice by examining how humour is constructed in selected Tanzanian stand-up comedy shows. Specifically, it sought to analyse the linguistic devices comedians use to evoke humour. The study is guided by Victor Raskin’s script-based semantic theory of humour (SSTH). The theory posits that humour arises from the opposition of two conflicting scripts within a linguistic structure. The qualitative research approach was used to guide the study processes. The study analysed nine (9) performances by famous Tanzanian comedians Mr. Eliud Samwel, Mr. Abdalla Musa Njalamoto (TX Dulla), Mr. Silvester Mujuni (Mpoki), and …

The Interplay Of Coercive Institutional Pressures, Environmental Attitudes And Perceived Behavioural Control In Adoption Of Environmental Management Accounting Among Tanzania’S Manufacturing Firms, James Dendula, Helena Thomas Haule, Henry Zeno Chalu
Business Management Review
Environmental Management Accounting (EMA) facilitates firms’ ability to identify, collect, record and evaluate environmental information critical for informed decision-making. EMA adoption is vital in controlling environmental costs, fostering innovation in eco-friendly technologies/products, and improving overall environmental performance. This study examined the drivers of EMA adoption, focusing on the influence of Coercive Institutional Pressure (CP), the mediating role of environmental attitudes and the moderating role of Perceived Behavioural Control (PBC). Data were collected from 146 manufacturing firms in Tanzania and analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) via SmartPLS v.4.0.9.5. Findings indicates that CP significantly and positively influences EMA …

The Nexus Between Green Human Resource Management Practices And Environmental Sustainability Of Tanzanian Manufacturing Firms: An Integrative Framework, Zakaria Mwakila, Severine Kessy
Business Management Review
The study aimed to examine the influence of GHRM practices on environmental sustainability. The study used the Ability-Motivation-Opportunity (AMO) theoretical framework to achieve this objective. The study adopted a quantitative approach for data collection and analysis, whereby 250 self-administered questionnaires were distributed to human resource managers of manufacturing firms. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyze the field data. Interestingly, the results of the study revealed that environmental sustainability is significantly and positively influenced by all of the selected GHRM practices, including green hiring, green training, and green performance management. This study contributes to the scientific …

Climate Change Anxiety And Hope Both Predict Action: A Moderation Analysis, Yuhan Bi, Grace Hyde, Orei Z. Odents, Kai Okagawa, Cassandra Hoffman, Kimberly A. Barchard
Spectra Undergraduate Research Journal
Climate change is associated with extreme weather events that have devastating effects on communities worldwide. These events disrupt ecosystems, damage infrastructure, and influence physical and mental well-being. Urgent action is needed. Prior studies demonstrate that people are more likely to take action if they feel anxious about climate change and if they feel hopeful they can make a difference. However, we hypothesized that anxiety and hope would interact: that anxiety would only predict action when people felt hopeful. Therefore, we used path analysis to determine if hope moderates the relation between anxiety and action.

Reckoning With An Icon: Exploring The Activism Of Mĩcere Githae Mũgo, Erica Charles Kiduko
Theses - ALL
This thesis examines the activism of Mĩcere Gīthae Mũgo, a distinguished Kenyan literary scholar, playwright, and feminist, whose works remain a vital part of twentieth and twenty-first century liberational struggles across Africa and the diaspora. Through a critical analysis of her literary projects, academic work, and political engagements, this study explores how Mũgo’s intellectual interventions challenged colonial, postcolonial, and patriarchal structures. It draws on feminist, Pan-Africanist, and decolonial theoretical frameworks, to situate career struggles for intellectual freedom, gender justice, and cultural reclamation. The thesis investigates foundational elements of Mugo activism, employing a multi-method qualitative approach: that includes textual analysis, oral …

The Politics Of Artisanal And Small-Scale Gold Mining (Asgm) In Tanzania In The 21st Century., Eliud Atugonza Kabamanya
Theses - ALL
This study investigates the politics of Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) in 21st-century Tanzania, focusing on the organization of miners towards access to key resources, namely land, capital, markets, geological information, technology, and examining environmental degradation, health, and safety concerns affecting miners and surrounding communities. Grounded in historical and dialectical materialism, the research traces ASGM’s evolution from the pre-colonial period through colonial exclusions, post-independence reforms, and neoliberal restructuring. The study employs qualitative methods, including interviews, field observations, and document analysis, conducted over two months across key mining sites in Tanzania. Findings reveal that ASGM is shaped by systemic exclusion, …
