What Makes Work Meaningful? A Mixed-Methods Study Exploring The Relationship Between Meaningfulness And Engagement Among Young Higher Education Professionals, Melody S. Murakami

Theses and Dissertations

This mixed-methods study explored how young professionals in higher education experienced meaningful work and the relationship between meaningfulness and work engagement. Using the Job Characteristics Model (JCM), the study examined how skill variety, task identity, and task significance contributed to experienced meaningfulness and engagement. Thirteen full-time employees (ages 25-35) at U.S. four-year higher education institutions completed a survey and participated in semi-structured interviews. Quantitative findings revealed a strong correlation between overall meaningfulness and engagement. Qualitative data affirmed the findings and the JCM, while also surfacing deeper insights on the different ways the job characteristics and individual factors were perceived and …

Leveling The Playing Field: A Phenomenological Study Advocating For Diversity In Nba And Wnba Sports Organization Leadership, Alejandra Jimenez Jan 2025

Leveling The Playing Field: A Phenomenological Study Advocating For Diversity In Nba And Wnba Sports Organization Leadership, Alejandra Jimenez

Theses and Dissertations

Through phenomenological research, a global leadership and change initiative is outlined for US-based sports organizations. The sports organizations are the National Basketball Association (NBA) and their extended female league, the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Both organizations recruit international players, attract global fans, and enhance current diversity policies to promote underrepresented women and people of color in leadership. The NBA and WNBA public human resources and diversity policies provide underrepresented leadership rates and efforts for questionnaire data sets and qualitative interviews. Nationally, these major sports organizations should further develop policies and practices to increase Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEI&B) …

Exploring Perceptions Of College Completion Obstacles Among First-Year Students With Disabilities, James Roshone Evans Jan 2025

Exploring Perceptions Of College Completion Obstacles Among First-Year Students With Disabilities, James Roshone Evans

Theses and Dissertations

Students with special needs encounter significant challenges that affect their development, social mobility, and ability to achieve personal and professional goals. Despite efforts to improve post-secondary education outcomes, enrollment rates among students with learning disabilities remain below average. This study examined the experiences of first-year college students with mild to moderate cognitive impairments to gain a deeper understanding of the barriers to degree completion. It examines mandatory education, California's special education laws, social support systems, and the theoretical frameworks of Tinto's theory on retention, Wahlberg's theory of academic achievement, and Astin’s scholarly roles theory. Interviews with 25 students with disabilities …

Birthing While Black: The Color Of Care And Black Women’S Lived Experiences Giving Birth In The United States, Portia Cowlings Jan 2025

Birthing While Black: The Color Of Care And Black Women’S Lived Experiences Giving Birth In The United States, Portia Cowlings

Theses and Dissertations

Black women in the United States face disproportionate maternal health outcomes during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum compared to other racial and ethnic groups. Despite advancements in healthcare, the United States continues to report the highest maternal mortality rates among high-income developed nations, with Black women experiencing rates up to three times higher than their White counterparts. This phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of Black women in the United States to understand how they navigate the continuum of maternal healthcare, from preconception through postpartum. Guided by the social determinants of health (SDOH) theoretical framework, childbirth was examined through four interconnected …

Highest Risk Density Region For The Communication Of The Impact Of A Treatment Covariate On The Time-To-Event Distribution, Giacomo Biganzoli, Giuseppe Marano Phd, Patrizia Boracchi Phd Jan 2025

Highest Risk Density Region For The Communication Of The Impact Of A Treatment Covariate On The Time-To-Event Distribution, Giacomo Biganzoli, Giuseppe Marano Phd, Patrizia Boracchi Phd

COBRA Preprint Series

Analysis of time-to-event (TTE) data is central to clinical research, yet conventional summary measures like the hazard ratio (HR) and restricted mean survival time (RMST) present significant challenges. The HR is often misinterpreted, and its validity depends on the frequently violated proportional hazards assumption, while the RMST is highly sensitive to the choice of time horizon. This paper introduces two novel, assumption-free estimands to address these limitations: the Highest Risk Density Region (HRDR) and the Highest Net Risk Difference Region (HNRDR).

The HRDR identifies the narrowest time interval containing a pre-specified probability mass of events, directly answering the clinical question: …

The disruption of ferroptosis, an emerging form of programmed cell death, is crucial in the development and aggressiveness of tumors. Meanwhile, the mechanisms and treatments that control ferroptosis in neuroblastoma (NB), a prevalent extracranial cancer in children, are still unknown. In this study, forkhead box C1 (FOXC1) and O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) are identified as regulators of asparagine- and alanine-mediated ferroptosis repression in NB. Mechanistically, OGT facilitates FOXC1 stabilization via inducing O-GlcNAcylation in liquid condensates to increase the expression of asparagine synthetase (ASNS) and glutamate pyruvate transaminase 2 (GPT2), resulting in asparagine and alanine biogenesis, and subsequent …

Macular Pucker And Cataract Treated With Phacoemulsification And Iol Implantation Combined With Small-Gauge Pars Plana Vitrectomy: A Comparison Of Outcomes With And Without Femtosecond Laser Assistance, Howard Wen-Haur Chao, Cheng-Kuo Cheng, Shiow-Wen Liou, Hsiao-Ming Chao

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Objectives: Age-related cataracts and macular pucker are increasingly common. Standard treatment combines phacoemulsification, IOL implantation and small gauge vitrectomy. Recent advancements and acceptance of femtosecond laser (FSL) assistance in cataract surgery have improved precision and outcomes. However, evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of FSL-assisted phacovitrectomy, particularly in Oriental patient populations with distinct anatomical and genetic characteristics, remain limited. This study aims to address this critical gap by comparing the safety and post-operative outcomes of 23- or 25-gauge phacovitrectomy for stage 3 macular pucker and medium density cataract with versus without FSL-assistance (FSLA), in an Oriental patient cohort.

Methods: Patients …

Motivation: Spatial transcriptomics (ST) captures positional gene expression within tissues but lacks single-cell resolution. Reference-based cell type deconvolution methods were developed to understand cell type distributions for ST. However, batch/platform discrepancies between references and ST impact their accuracy.

Results: We present Region-based Cell Sorting (ReSort), which utilizes ST's region-level data to lessen reliance on reference data and alleviate these technical issues. In simulation studies, ReSort enhances reference-based deconvolution methods. Applying ReSort to a mouse breast cancer model highlights macrophages M0 and M2 enrichment in the epithelial clone, revealing insights into epithelial-mesenchymal transition and immune infiltration.
