Robot-Assisted Surgical Treatment Of Caseoma, Nancy Wang, Abdussalam Elsenousi, Kenneth K Liao Jan 2025

Robot-Assisted Surgical Treatment Of Caseoma, Nancy Wang, Abdussalam Elsenousi, Kenneth K Liao

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

This report reviews 5 cases of mitral annular caseoma. Four patients presented with fatigue, stroke, or mitral stenosis. Robot-assisted resection of caseoma with or without mitral valve replacement was successfully performed in all patients with good outcomes. These cases demonstrate the safety and efficacy of robotic surgery in treating caseoma.

Smithian Merchant Towns And Good Government In The Wealth Of Nations, John B. Estill Jan 2025

Smithian Merchant Towns And Good Government In The Wealth Of Nations, John B. Estill

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Commentators on Adam Smith’s Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations often characterize Smith as a proponent of government in multiple areas, including security in person, property, contract, and some public goods. However, Smith understood government more expansively than people today. In volume I, book III, chapters I–IV, Smith describes the evolution of merchant towns in England that led to “good governance” that dismantled the feudal system. This limited government not only included the security provided by the formal laws and institutions. It also aligned the informal elements of individual civic ethics and self-reliance with the …

Working With Physical And Virtual Manipulatives: A Systematic Review Of Affordance And Cognitive Engagement Manifested Through Implementation, Seokmin Kang, Chun-Hao Chang, Sungyeun Kim Jan 2025

Working With Physical And Virtual Manipulatives: A Systematic Review Of Affordance And Cognitive Engagement Manifested Through Implementation, Seokmin Kang, Chun-Hao Chang, Sungyeun Kim

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

Virtual tools are rapidly supplementing physical tools in classrooms. Although extensive research has compared the benefits of using virtual and physical manipulatives, few studies have systematically explored the learning benefits of using a physical and a virtual tool. As the major learning goal in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education is to help students better understand scientific and mathematical concepts and processes, this study reviewed empirical studies comparing learning performance between working with physical and virtual manipulatives published between 2000 and 2022 in Education and Psychology journals. The results revealed inconsistent patterns in learning comparison across studies even with …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Many national meetings and speaker series feature an "Annual Review of the Literature" (ARL) session in which an individual or team presents a sampling of articles, selected and prepared because they represent important current topics or new ideas in the discipline of interest. Despite this, there is little in the medical literature describing how to thoughtfully and systematically develop these sessions. We identify best practices that we have developed and used in the United States Clerkship Directors of Internal Medicine (CDIM) over many years. These include identification of a theme, team assembly, timeline development, search strategy and rubric development and …

Languages And Nation Building, David Martinez-Prieto Jan 2025

Languages And Nation Building, David Martinez-Prieto

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

In this chapter, I analyze the ideologies behind the rationale that implies that citizens of a specific country should speak specific languages. In other words, I examine the relationship between the ideological construction of citizens and languages. I first explore notions of ideological construction explained by Weberian (1904/2002), Marxist (1872), and Geertz (1973) to provide a seminal understanding of the creation of a “collective we” embedded in nation-states. I then refer to some common academic research frameworks to analyze the ideological construction of citizenship within a nation state to differing degrees of acceptance of (Gramsci, 1948) and resistance to (Anzaldúa, …

Toward Precision Longevity: Aging Interventions In The Single-Cell Atlas Era, Jason B Chen, Miranda C Wang, Shangyu Gong, Hongjie Li Jan 2025

Toward Precision Longevity: Aging Interventions In The Single-Cell Atlas Era, Jason B Chen, Miranda C Wang, Shangyu Gong, Hongjie Li

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

With growing global interest in extending not only lifespan but also healthspan, healthy aging has emerged as a central goal in biomedical research. This review provides an overview of current longevity interventions, including genetic manipulations, dietary restriction, exercise, pharmacological treatments, targeting senescence and cellular reprogramming strategies, as studied in key model organisms such as Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila melanogaster, and Mus musculus. We examine the limitations and challenges associated with these approaches, particularly their variability across tissues and cell types. Furthermore, we emphasize the critical role of single-cell aging atlas technologies in uncovering cell-type–specific aging patterns and molecular …
