Chatbot Assessment: Best Practices For Artificial Intelligence In The Library, Michelle Ehrenpreis, John P. Delooper

Publications and Research

In November 2019, the Leonard Lief Library implemented Ivy.ai, a proprietary chatbot on its website. This implementation was the first academic library installation of a vendor-supplied chatbot to be discussed in the professional literature. This chatbot functioned as a new tool that assisted users seeking information from the library website. User questions provided insight to the authors about the kinds of topics students searched for via the library website. In April 2023, the chatbot’s vendor began using OpenAI’s ChatGPT Application Programming Interface (API) to improve the chatbot’s functionality. This change, from a rules-based chatbot system to a transformer model, enhanced …

Institutions And Economic Development, Ezra Rosser Jan 2025

Institutions And Economic Development, Ezra Rosser

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

INTRODUCTION: Though forty years have passed since the American Indian Law Review published Economic Development in Indian Country: What Are the Questions? by Professor Frank Pommersheim, many of the same challenges and questions about economic development remain. This brief Essay looks back at Pommersheim’s work, surveys the state of scholarship on economic development today, and offers a few ideas about the future of such work. To this day, economic development remains a backwater among law professors compared to sexier topics like criminal jurisdiction, civil authority over nonIndians, and whatever is the most recent opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court. But …

Securitization Of African Migrants In Europe And North America, Chick Edmond Jan 2025

Securitization Of African Migrants In Europe And North America, Chick Edmond

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

The securitization of African migrants in Europe and North America refers to the framing of immigrants as an existential security threat rather than a socioeconomic or humanitarian concerns. This discourse driven by political rhetoric, media narratives, and policy measures, often depict African migrants as risks to national security, cultural identity, and economic stability. Governments in host countries employ stringent border controls, detention and deportation policies often justified by counterterrorism and crime prevention frameworks. However, critics argue that securitization exacerbates xenophobia, violates human rights, and fails to address root causes of migration, such as conflict, poverty, and climate change. This paper …

Echocardiography (ECHO) is essential for cardiac assessments, but its video quality and interpretation heavily rely on manual expertise, leading to inconsistent results from clinical and portable devices. ECHO video generation offers a solution by improving automated monitoring through synthetic data and generating high-quality videos from routine health data. However, existing models often face high computational costs, slow inference, and rely on complex conditional prompts that require experts' annotations. To address these challenges, we propose ECHOPulse, an ECG-conditioned ECHO video generation model. ECHOPulse introduces two key advancements: (1) it accelerates ECHO video generation by leveraging VQ-VAE tokenization and masked visual token …

Using this debate as an example, this article seeks to illuminate the distinction between reformist and non-reformist reforms. The article argues that abolitionists’ criticism of reformists as agents of oppression risks alienating potential allies and discouraging progressive interventions in pivotal, …

Content-Neutral Restrictions Revisited, Abner S. Greene Jan 2025

Content-Neutral Restrictions Revisited, Abner S. Greene

Faculty Scholarship

Whether a law affecting free speech does so in a content-based or content-neutral way is usually the first step in analyzing the law’s constitutionality.  But the Supreme Court has not had an easy time sorting statutes as content based or content neutral, and it has similarly struggled in sorting and explaining the difference between content-neutral laws that incidentally affect expression (O’Brien laws) and content-neutral laws that regulate the time, place, or manner of expression (TPM laws).  Scholarship on content-neutral restrictions has nibbled around the edges of these difficulties but has yet to comprehensively analyze the doctrine.  This Article provides a …

Group And State-Specific Estimation In Animal Movement Models Using A Bayesian Approach, Anita Bhandari Sharma Jan 2025

Group And State-Specific Estimation In Animal Movement Models Using A Bayesian Approach, Anita Bhandari Sharma

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This research study investigates statistical approaches for modeling the movement patterns of white-tailed deer in Louisiana using GPS tracking data. We start by classifying the latent behavioral states using a hidden Markov model (HMM) and then integrate those inferred states into a state-dependent step selection framework to evaluate the land cover preferences. Standard HMMs, however, assume the same movement patterns for all animals, overlooking the differences due to characteristics such as sex, age, breeding season, etc.

To address this limitation, we extend the modeling framework to incorporate the group-level structure defined by similar characteristics or conditions to assess whether such …
