Assessment Of Polymeric Chloroquine Formulations For Targeted Therapy Of Ulcerative Colitis And Metastatic Colorectal Cancer, Neha Kumari
Theses & Dissertations
Effective targeted drug delivery is a critical unmet need in the management of both ulcerative colitis and metastatic colorectal cancer, where conventional systemic therapies may be hindered by suboptimal efficacy and significant side effects. This thesis explores the development and preclinical assessment of polymeric chloroquine (PCQ)-based nanotherapeutics, leveraging stimuli-responsive designs for disease-specific delivery and action.
For ulcerative colitis, a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive nanogel system was engineered to release PCQ, a macromolecular derivative of hydroxychloroquine, specifically in the inflamed areas within the colon. Nanogels with well-defined size and positive surface charge were synthesized via reversible fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization …
Role Of Nadph Oxidase 4 In Murine Cancer-Associated Fibroblast, Faith M. Gomez
Role Of Nadph Oxidase 4 In Murine Cancer-Associated Fibroblast, Faith M. Gomez
Theses & Dissertations
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women in the United States. Frontline hormone therapies for breast cancer prove ineffective in triple negative breast cancer tumors wherein the hormones estrogen, progesterone, and HER2 are downregulated or absent; therefore, patients diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer are primarily limited to chemotherapies which carry a higher failure and resistance rate. Here we target cancer associated fibroblasts as potential drivers of chemoresistance in triple negative breast cancer. We investigated the mechanism by which Nox4 regulates the YAP/TAZ pathway in modulating DTX sensitivity and sought to determine if targeting Nox4 …
Regulation Of Chromatin Remodeling By The Post-Hsa Domain Of Brg1, A Subunit The Baf Atp-Dependent Chromatin Remodeling Complex, Min Sze Ewe
Theses & Dissertations
The ATP-dependent chromatin remodeler BAF complex regulates nucleosome positioning, chromatin accessibility, and tissue specific gene expression. Its catalytic subunit, BRG1, contains several regulatory domains including the post-HSA region, proposed to modulate ATPase activity. Multiple cancer-associated mutations map to these regulatory regions underscoring their importance, yet the precise role of the post-HSA region in chromatin remodeling remains poorly understood.
To investigate the function of the post-HSA domain, we ectopically expressed FLAG-tagged BRG1 with post-HSA deletion (Δpost-HSA BRG1) in mouse embryonic stem cells. Western blot analysis confirmed expression of the mutant protein. To determine the effects of mutant protein expression on chromatin …
Interrupting Empire: Playing With Concealment And Pedagogy In The Meme ‘For The Better, Right?’, Amy N. Sojot
Interrupting Empire: Playing With Concealment And Pedagogy In The Meme ‘For The Better, Right?’, Amy N. Sojot
Education Studies Faculty publications
‘For the better, right?’ is a Star Wars meme that depicts a scene from Episode II—Attack of the Clones. Although the scene and dialogue never occur in the actual film, the meme provides a concise fourteen-word analysis of how Empire conceals itself. Using postfoundational inquiry, this article examines the meme’s pedagogy through Brian Massumi’s work on play in relation to politics and affect. Concealment and interrup- tion are identified as two characteristics of these relations. Author-created iterations of the meme demonstrate how play, as theorized by Massumi, can rework these tactics of concealment and interruption, enabling them to imagine alternative …
Ai And Naval Operations, Wolff Heintschel Von Heinegg
Ai And Naval Operations, Wolff Heintschel Von Heinegg
International Law Studies
Artificial intelligence systems in naval operations are reality. They enhance naval capabilities in various respects. Autonomous surface and underwater vehicles depend on such systems. Moreover, these systems contribute to threat detection and identification, to real-time strategy optimization, and to intelligence analysis. The present article provides a brief analysis of the legality of AI systems used by naval forces under the law of naval warfare, which, in many respects, differs considerably from the law of land warfare. Accordingly, it is necessary to distinguish between attacks from the sea against targets on land and attacks against targets at sea and in the …
Playing By Feel: Gender, Emotion, And Social Norms In Overwatch Role Choice, Cristo Leon, Angela Arroyo, James Lipuma
Playing By Feel: Gender, Emotion, And Social Norms In Overwatch Role Choice, Cristo Leon, Angela Arroyo, James Lipuma
STEM for Success Resources
This paper explores how emotion, gameplay context, and social norms shape role choice in both digital and institutional systems. Using Overwatch as a case study, it examines gendered experiences of physiological excitement and decision-making during play. Women often describe heightened emotional engagement where victory represents both personal achievement and resistance to cultural expectations. Such emotions influence situational choices, including whether to play as a Tank, DPS, or Support, and which hero to select based on perceived risk or visibility. Drawing on feminist game studies and transdisciplinary communication, the authors argue that role preference is determined not only by game mechanics …
Probing The Mechanisms Of Reinforcement Learning: Reinforcement Learning, Ventral Striatal Astrocytes, And The Dynamic Coordination Of Information Seeking With Learning, Fatih Sogukpinar
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
While reinforcement learning has been a vital component in artificial intelligence and machine learning, there exist many open questions about its implementations and how to improve them, in both minds and machines. Among these are i) the contribution of non-neuronal cell types to reinforcement learning, and ii) information-seeking behavior during reinforcement learning. In this thesis, we studied these main topics pertaining to reinforcement learning. In the first chapter, we examined the role of astrocytes in reinforcement learning, and in the second, we investigated human information seeking during reinforcement learning. Neurons in the human and animal brain have been known to …

Investigating Metabolic Heterogeneity In Engineered Isogenic Microorganisms, Xinyue Mu
Investigating Metabolic Heterogeneity In Engineered Isogenic Microorganisms, Xinyue Mu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Engineered microorganisms play an increasingly important role in the sustainable production of fuels, bioplastics, and other valuable biomaterials. Successful industrial deployment depends on maximizing product titers and ensuring process robustness at large scale. However, one of the major obstacles is non-genetic cell-to-cell heterogeneity arising from stochastic intracellular processes. Such heterogeneity can result in subpopulations that divert substrates toward growth rather than product biosynthesis, ultimately reducing yield and contributing to batch-to-batch inconsistency. To better understand the mechanisms by which cell-to-cell variation emerges, propagates, and impacts bioproduction, this dissertation investigated how intracellular energetic dynamics and stochastic biosynthetic noise contributed to metabolic heterogeneity …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Background: Survival among children and adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer has improved substantially over recent decades; however, dominant survivorship models remain reactive-activated post-treatment and anchored to static exposure- and organ-based screening. This design underuses the anticipatory window at diagnosis and overlooks environmental and social determinants that modulate outcomes across the life course. Methods: We narratively reviewed international frameworks including the Children's Oncology Group (COG), the International Late Effects of Childhood Cancer Guideline Harmonization Group (IGHG), the Pan-European Network for Care of Survivors after Childhood and Adolescent Cancer (PanCare) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), and synthesized evidence …
How Design Law Is Taking Shape In The United States And European Union, Christine Haight Farley
How Design Law Is Taking Shape In The United States And European Union, Christine Haight Farley
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
This Essay uses a comparative framework to show that sophisticated design rights holders in both the United States (U.S.) and the European Union (EU) increasingly sidestep specialized design regimes in favor of more expansive trademark and copyright doctrines. Although both jurisdictions now operate cumulative intellectual property (IP) systems for industrial design, they have taken sharply divergent paths in confronting the proliferation of “design dupes”—replicas that trade on the appeal of sought-after designs. In the United States, rights holders rely chiefly on trademark law, and especially trade dress, to convert cultural recognition into legally cognizable source indication, a move facilitated by …

The Debate Over The Lebanese Diaspora’S Vote: As Lebanon Tries To Reform Itself, The Diaspora Wants A Say At The Ballot Box, Sandra Sadek
Capstones
The Lebanese diaspora is demanding full voting rights ahead of the 2026 parliamentary elections. The movement comes at a time when the 2026 parliamentary elections coincide with a moment of national reckoning. Despite urgency from a vocal diaspora and pressure from several members of parliament and the cabinet, the bill to permanently amend the current electoral law has stalled on the speaker’s desk. The outcome of that struggle stands not only to determine how much influence this global constituency can have on Lebanon’s future but also what the country’s recovery path can look like amid a dramatically changing regional landscape. …

In this nonpayment proceeding, the court granted the tenant's motion for summary judgment and dismissed the petition. The landlord sought to recover rent from a residential tenant, but the tenant successfully argued that the building was in violation of Multiple Dwelling Law §§ 301 and 302. Specifically, the court found that the landlord had converted formerly residential units on the first floor into commercial medical offices, a use inconsistent with the building's I-Card. The court held that such commercial use, when inconsistent with a building's certificate of occupancy or I-Card, bars a landlord from recovering rent from any residential tenants …

Gram-negative bacteria utilize siderophores to scavenge for environmental iron. Pseudomonas capeferrum produces the siderophores pseudobactin BN7/8, which trigger cell surface signaling (CSS). Iron import CSS pathways consist of an outer membrane TonBdependent transporter, an inner membrane sigma regulator, and a cytoplasmic sigma factor that activates transcription of target genes. The P. capeferrum sigma regulator, PupR, has an N-terminal antisigma domain (ASD). Previously, the PupR ASD was purified as a dimer in the absence of its cognate sigma factor, PupI. Here we use pulldown assays to demonstrate that His6-PupIFL interacts with the PupR ASD as well as with homodimer-disrupting mutants. We …
Facilitators Of Routine Cervical Screening Receipt For Women With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities In Nebraska, Anne Woodruff Jameson
Facilitators Of Routine Cervical Screening Receipt For Women With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities In Nebraska, Anne Woodruff Jameson
Theses & Dissertations
Women with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) experience disproportionately low rates of cervical screening relative to women without I/DD, despite its clear role in cancer prevention. This disparity is especially stark in Nebraska, where in 2023, only 56% of women with I/DD had cervical screen receipt, compared to 78.4% of their non-disabled peers.. Previous literature has explored barriers to cervical screening for women with I/DD using the socioecological model (SEM) as a framework. This dissertation used three methodologies: a case study, a scoping review, and survey research, to examine facilitators to cervical screening for women with I/DD using the SEM …

A System And Method For Validating Payee Identity In Unified Payments Interface (Upi) Based Payment Transactions, Alok Roy
Defensive Publications Series
The present disclosure relates to a system and method for validating payee identity in unified payments interface (UPI) based payment transactions. The method prevents misrouted payments in a digital payment environment, specifically addresses risks associated with mobile number reassignment. The system includes a mobile number re-authentication module designed to detect re-linking of mobile numbers to new accounts and an identity-change ledger that records historical mappings of mobile numbers to account holder identities. The method initiates by receiving a mobile number entry from a payor, performing a validation step that cross-references the entered number against the identity-change ledger, and generating a …
The Aesthetics Of Endings, Mary Imbong
The Aesthetics Of Endings, Mary Imbong
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
What does it mean for an experience to end? Guided by this question, I offer an interpretation of John Dewey’s notion of endings in Art as Experience and propose a perspective on the role of endings in aesthetic experiences. We often instinctively view endings as the final note in a sequence of events—disconnected from the moments that come before it. Dewey, however, sees them not as an isolated fragment but as part of the unity of an experience. His themes of doing and undergoing, as well as unity and wholeness, challenge conventional views of experience and encourage reflection on how …
Against The Perfect Theory-Theory: Toward A Tenable Realism, Magnus Fried
Against The Perfect Theory-Theory: Toward A Tenable Realism, Magnus Fried
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
We all have realistic intuitions: there is a mind-independent world out there, and we can capture some of its features in our scientific theories. There have been many attempts to justify our realistic intuitions, and I will analyze some that build on ideas from Saul Kripke and (in particular) Hilary Putnam. However, many of these attempts share a dependency on what I call “The Perfect Theory -Theory,” which holds that there could be a theory that perfectly mirrors the objectively existing world. But this theory is defunct, so the dependency is an issue. Scientific realism, many have argued, relies on …
Socrates And Early Buddhist Medical Ethics: Foundations Of Moral Reasoning In The Care Of Body And Mind, Chandima Gangodawila
Socrates And Early Buddhist Medical Ethics: Foundations Of Moral Reasoning In The Care Of Body And Mind, Chandima Gangodawila
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
While Buddhist traditions articulate a parallel moral vision in the early discourses of the Pāli Canon, Western traditions usually locate the roots of ethical reasoning in Socratic inquiry. Especially in their approaches to bodily care, spiritual well - being, and moral responsibility, this article contends that both Socratic and Early Buddhist ideas converge on fundamental principles in medical ethics. Through a comparative textual and philosophical study, the paper examines how Socratic dialectics and the Buddha's diagnostic approach to dissatisfa ction/ suffering (dukkha) both produce frameworks for ethical healthcare anchored in the development of virtue, wisdom, and care for the integrity …

Inclusive Stem Education In Nigerian Schools:An Emerging Pathway For Substainable Development, Oginni Aderonke Margaret Dr., Awobodu Victoria Yetunde Dr., Olusegun Bisola Esther Miss
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Inclusive STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education plays a vital role in promoting equitable learning opportunities and fostering sustainable development. However, in Nigeria, many marginalized student groups face barriers that hinder their full participation in STEM fields. This study examines the factors impeding inclusivity in STEM education and their effects on students’ motivation, academic performance, and awareness of sustainable development in Lagos State. Employing a survey research design, data were gathered from 550 students selected through simple random sampling across 21 secondary schools in Education Districts I, III, and V. A researcher-developed questionnaire was used for data collection. To …
