This dissertation in practice explores this emerging intersection by examining student-athlete perceptions of NIL opportunities with cannabinoid brands and highlighting the perceived advantages and disadvantages of such deals. This dissertation in practice consists of three artifacts. Artifact I provides essential background information on NIL, cannabinoids, and the House v. NCAA settlement. Recognizing the legal, institutional, and cultural shifts …
Strengthening Traffic Safety Laws On The Crow Indian Reservation, Darcy Merchant
Strengthening Traffic Safety Laws On The Crow Indian Reservation, Darcy Merchant
Theses and Dissertations
The Crow Indian reservation is located in south-central Montana. The reservation is one of the largest land-based tribes in Montana, encompassing an area of over three thousand square miles. The reservation borders the state of Wyoming to the south and the Northern Cheyenne Indian reservation to the east. The reservation features a comprehensive transportation system that encompasses tribal, county, state, and federal roadways. Drivers and passengers who travel on these roadways are at higher risk for fatal and severe injury-related motor vehicle crashes than those in other reservations. This situation largely stems from the critical absence of targeted traffic safety …
Chemical Looping As An Enabling Technology For Low-Carbon Energy Production, Junior Neguieh Domkam Nasah
Chemical Looping As An Enabling Technology For Low-Carbon Energy Production, Junior Neguieh Domkam Nasah
Theses and Dissertations
Growth in global gross domestic product has historically been tied with high-carbon energy sources. Development of new low-carbon energy technologies is thus key to achieving a de-coupling of energy demand from economic growth. This dissertation evaluates the technical feasibility of a small-scale low-carbon solution referred to as Combined Hydrogen, Heat and Power (CH2P), a synthesis gas to hydrogen chemical looping process. The CH2P process is based on the steam-iron process and adopts multiple batch reactors to convert syngas in a two-step approach. First, the syngas is partially oxidized by reducing Magnetite (Fe3O4) to Wüstite (FeO) followed by complete oxidation in …

The Roles Of Readily Releasable Stores Of Endolysosome Iron In The Pathogenesis And Treatment Of Alzheimer's Disease, Darius N.K Quansah
Theses and Dissertations
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized clinically as progressive decline in cognition and dementia. Pathologically, AD is characterized by the extracellular presence of senile plaques composed of accumulated amyloid beta (Aβ) proteins and intraneuronal accumulation of neurofibrillary tangles composed of hyperphosphorylated tau proteins. In addition to these pathological hallmarks, AD pathogenesis is characterized by increases in intracellular iron and reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the link between the two have been well described by Fenton’s chemistry. Endolysosomes appear to be affected very early in the onset of AD. Endolysosomes contain labile stores of iron which can be readily …

Public Perceptions Of Fracking And Anti-Fracking Activism: A Theory Of Planned Behavior Approach And Its Implications For Environmental Policy, Okhumode Hector Yakubu
Theses and Dissertations
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has become one of the most contentious energy technologies of the 21st century, drawing support for its economic and energy security benefits and opposition due to its perceived environmental and health risks. This study applies the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to examine the psychological, social, and informational factors that shape public perceptions of fracking and motivate anti-fracking activism. Using a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults (N = 522), this research investigates how attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and domain-specific knowledge predict support or opposition to fracking, as well as intentions to engage in …
Shedding Light To The Rights To Light In England And Wales: The Need For Reform, Goodtime Okara
Shedding Light To The Rights To Light In England And Wales: The Need For Reform, Goodtime Okara
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
The right to light is unarguably a right that could hinder the development of the servient land. Owing to the possibility of granting a mandatory injunction when breached, this right could lead to extra costs and delays in the efficient development of the servient land by real property developers, even when the dominant tenement does not wish to enjoy the right. Hence, this paper critically reflects on rights to light in England and Wales to determine the impact of this right on the servient land. It explores the direction of travel across the Courts – by briefly examining rights to …

School of Nursing and Midwifery
Since 2016, the National Health Service (NHS) in England has been aiming to implement midwifery continuity of carer (MCoC), a model of maternity care in which the same midwife or small group of midwives provides antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care for women, other birthing people and their babies. However, the implementation has faced significant difficulties. As part of a wider investigation into barriers to and facilitators of MCoC implementation, we carried out qualitative interviews with senior stakeholders involved in the implementation of MCoC at regional or national level in England. In this paper, we present an analysis of sociocultural values …

Next-Gen Device For Uniform Cellular Migration Assay Execution, Nicholas M. Bittner
Next-Gen Device For Uniform Cellular Migration Assay Execution, Nicholas M. Bittner
Theses and Dissertations
Cellular migration assays, particularly scratch assays, are pivotal in biomedical research for cell motility, wound healing, and metastasis. However, conventional scratch assays suffer from variability due to operator dependence, non-uniform scratch geometry, and a modified microenvironment that impacts reproducibility. This thesis presents the development and validation of a low-cost, 3D-printed device designed to standardize cellular migration assays. The device utilizes a spring mechanism and a biocompatible elastomer to create a uniform cellular exclusion zone without harming the surrounding cells. Through iterative prototyping and testing with MCF10A cell lines, the device demonstrated a significantly lower average standard deviation of length compared …
Thermally Induced Evolution Of The Cement Microannulus In Co2 Injection Wells, Jawad Ali Khan
Thermally Induced Evolution Of The Cement Microannulus In Co2 Injection Wells, Jawad Ali Khan
Theses and Dissertations
Ensuring wellbore integrity during CO2 injection is a critical challenge in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), as failures at the casing-cement and cement-formation interfaces can create potential leakage pathways. This dissertation presents a multi-scale, physics-based investigation into well integrity risks, integrating finite element analysis (FEA), thermal-mechanical-poroelastic modeling, and transient stress analysis to evaluate cement sheath stability, fracture-driven stress localization, and microannulus formation under various CCS conditions.
A key novelty of this research is the development of a fully coupled thermal-mechanical-poroelastic FEA framework using COMSOL Multiphysics, a renowned industry-standard software for multiphysics simulations. This model enables a dynamic, time-dependent assessment …

Computational Argumentation And Automatic Rule-Generation For Explainable Data-Driven Modeling, Luca Longo, Serena Berretta, Damiano Verda, Lucas Rizzo
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
The creation of data-driven models for classification problems requires increasing transparency and inferential explainability, especially in high-stakes domains such as health-care, finance, and policy making. Rule-based systems are widely regarded as a strong candidate for the development of models that are also comprehensible to humans. However, the generated rules are often considered individually with minimal or no consideration of their interactions. This research focuses on the adoption of computational argumentation techniques, which allow for rule-interaction for enhanced explainability. In other words, rules can be revoked when new information is introduced, essentially achieving the notion of non-monotonicity. In detail, an empirical …

Accreditation Considerations In Engineering Ethics Education: Bridging Global Standards And Local Practices: Bridging Global Standards And Local Practices, Louise O'Gorman, Alison Gwynne-Evan, Leah Ridgeway, Marek Rebow, Shannon Chance
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Accreditation can drive curricular innovation and change in engineering and can have a role in encouraging students' development of ethics-related competencies. Despite engineering educators' competence in the technical aspects of design and research, there can be an element of discomfort in planning and delivering lessons relating to ethics that span social justice, diversity and inclusion, environmental sustainability, and ethical theories. Because engineering accreditation can encourage and/or require the inclusion of ethical content in accredited engineering courses, the recently published Routledge Handbook of Engineering Ethics Education dedicated an entire section to the topic. This paper critically assesses the handbook's accreditation section …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Networked microgrids (NMG) are gaining popularity as an example of smart grids (SG), where power networks are integrated with communication technologies. Communication technologies enable NMGs to be monitored and controlled via communication networks. However, ensuring that communication networks in NMGs satisfy quality of delivery (QoD) metrics such as the round trip time (RTT) of NMG control data is necessary. This paper addresses the communication network types and communication technologies used in NMGs. We present various NMG deployments to demonstrate real-life applicability in different contexts. We develop a real-time NMG testbed using real hardware, such as Cisco 4331 Integrated Services Routers …

Background and purpose: Prior work on adaptive organ-at-risk (OAR)-sparing radiation therapy has typically reported outcomes based on fixed-number or fixed-interval re-planning, which represent one-size-fits-all approaches and do not account for the variable progression of individual patients' toxicities. The purpose of this study was to determine the personalized optimal timing of re-planning in adaptive OAR-sparing radiation therapy, considering limited re-planning resources, for patients with head and neck cancer (HNC).
Materials and methods: A novel Markov decision process (MDP) model was developed to determine optimal timing of re-planning based on the patient's expected toxicity, characterized by normal tissue complication probability (NTCP), for …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent cancers in terms of diagnosis and mortality. Radiotherapy (RT) remains a mainstay of CRC therapy. As RT relies on DNA damage to promote tumor cell death, the activity of cellular DNA damage repair pathways can modulate cancer sensitivity to therapy. The gut microbiome has been shown to influence intestinal health and is independently associated with CRC development, treatment responses and outcomes. The microbiome can also modulate responses to CRC RT through various mechanisms such as community structure, toxins and metabolites. In this review we explore the use of RT in the …

High-grade B-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified (HGBCL, NOS) has overlapping morphological and genetic features with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and Burkitt lymphoma (BL), leading to uncertainty in its diagnosis and clinical management. Using functional genomic approaches, we previously characterized HGBCL and NOS, that demonstrate gene expression profiling (GEP), and genetic signatures similar to BL. Herein, we characterize distinct HGBCL, NOS, cohort (n = 55) in adults (n = 45) and in children (n = 10), and compared the GEP, genomic DNA copy number (CN), and mutational spectrum with de novo DLBCL (n = 85) and BL (n = 52). …

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) development is characterized by an altered DNA methylation landscape, which presents a promising area for developing MPNST-specific biomarkers for screening patients with NF1. Genome-wide DNA methylation profiling of a cohort of 13 patients with MPNST (29 samples of tumor and adjacent neurofibroma tissues) and of NF1-MPNST cell lines was performed to identify and validate candidate MPNST-specific CpG sites (CpGs). A logistic regression prediction model was constructed to select MPNST-specific CpGs distinct from adjacent neurofibromas and normal tissues. To test if hypermethylation at selected CpGs can also be detected in plasma from patients with MPNST, …

Primary cilia (hereafter "cilia") are microtubule-based antenna-like organelles projecting from the surface of vertebrate cells. Cilia can serve as cellular antennae controlling cell growth and differentiation. Absent or dysfunctional cilia frequently lead to craniofacial anomalies known as craniofacial ciliopathies. However, the detailed pathological mechanisms of craniofacial ciliopathies remain unclear. This perspective discusses our current understanding of the role of cilia in cranial neural crest cells. We also describe potential mechanisms of ciliogenesis in cranial neural crest cells, which may contribute to unraveling the complex pathogenesis of craniofacial ciliopathies.

Chronic pain often includes periods of transient amelioration and even remission that alternate with severe relapsing pain. While most research on chronic pain has focused on pain development and maintenance, there is a critical unmet need to better understand the mechanisms that underlie pain remission and relapse. We found that interleukin (IL)-10, a pain resolving cytokine, is produced by resident macrophages in the spinal meninges during remission from pain and signaled to IL-10 receptor-expressing sensory neurons. Using unbiased RNA-sequencing, we identified that IL-10 upregulated expression and antinociceptive activity of δ-opioid receptor (δOR) in the dorsal root ganglion. Genetic or pharmacological …

This review explores neutrophils' roles in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), highlighting their functions within the immune system. While neutrophils are known for fighting infections, their altered behavior in CLL significantly impacts disease progression. This review notes the reduced phagocytic abilities of neutrophils and the increased formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in patients with CLL. It also examines the effects of CLL treatments, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapies, on neutrophils' count and function, stressing the need for improved strategies to manage therapy-induced immune dysfunction. This review also provides detailed information about the interactions between neutrophils and other immune elements …

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a mature T-cell lymphoma that accounts for 10-15% of childhood lymphomas. Despite the observation that more than 90% of pediatric cases harbor the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangement resulting in aberrant ALK kinase expression, there is significant clinical, morphologic, and biological heterogeneity. To gain insights into the genomic aberrations and molecular heterogeneity within ALK-positive ALCL (ALK+ ALCL), we analyzed 46 pediatric ALK+ ALCLs by whole-exome sequencing, RNA sequencing, and DNA methylation profiling. Whole-exome sequencing found on average 25 SNV/Indel events per sample with recurring genetic events in regulators of DNA damage (TP53, MDM4), transcription …

Introduction: In today's 24/7 society, circadian misalignment caused by environmental and lifestyle factors is associated with various adverse health consequences. Understanding tissue-specific pathology is required to counter this growing public health challenge. A potential association of environmental circadian misalignment with sarcopenia, or accelerated loss of skeletal muscle strength and mass, is poorly documented.
Methods: 14-week-old wild-type C57BL/6J male mice were exposed to a chronic jet lag (CJL) paradigm consisting of an 8-h phase advance every 4 days (the ADV group) or a fixed light-dark cycle (the LD group) for 64 weeks. Grip strength was measured during the experiment, and hindlimb …

This position paper, led by the NRG Oncology Particle Therapy Work Group, focuses on the concept of relative biologic effect (RBE) in clinical proton therapy (PT), with the goal of providing recommendations for the next-generation clinical trials with PT on the best practice of investigating and using RBE, which could deviate from the current standard proton RBE value of 1.1 relative to photons. In part 1, current clinical utilization and practice are reviewed, giving the context and history of RBE. Evidence for variation in RBE is presented along with the concept of linear energy transfer (LET). The intertwined nature of …

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article is devoted to the analysis of the iconography of the Kiev metropolitans of the 18th century as a unique phenomenon of religious Ukrainian Baroque art. The portraits of the bishops are considered not only as representative images of spiritual power, but also as carriers of cultural codes that record a special type of “Kyiv Christianity” formed on the border of Eastern and Western civilizations. Special attention is paid to Baroque aesthetics – the splendor of the bishop’s vestments, the ornamentality, theatricality of the compositions and at the same time the psychological depth of the portrayed. The study shows …
