Edna Surveillance And Population Genomics Of The Invasive Loaches Introduced To The United States, Tobin J. Davidson

Theses and Dissertations

Invasive species represent a growing threat to the ecosystems and economies of the United States. The southeastern United States is an aquatic biodiversity hotspot, and the decline of multiple native species already facing extinction is attributed to a rapidly growing number of nonindigenous freshwater fishes. Next-generation sequencing was used to analyze the population genomics of several populations of Pond Loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) introduced to the United States. Three evolutionarily significant units of Misgurnus loaches were found, suggesting the invasion of multiple different species in the United States. Additionally, noninvasive environmental DNA (eDNA) protocol designed for early detection of invasive freshwater …

Social Validity Of Functional Analysis Variations, Rita M. Druffner Aug 2025

Social Validity Of Functional Analysis Variations, Rita M. Druffner

Theses and Dissertations

The functional analysis was developed to systematically identify the antecedent and consequent conditions mediating challenging behavior. Modifications to the traditional procedures have been developed to address barriers to implementation, including duration, environmental control, and safety. Much of the research surrounding functional analyses addresses effectiveness, barriers to implementation, and practitioner acceptability. However, there is a lack of research assessing caregiver social validity of functional analysis procedures. Social validity is the assessment of the goals, procedures, and outcomes of behavior analytic practice. Even though there has been advocacy for including measures of social within behavior analytic research and practice, there is limited …

My Grandparents Raised Me: The Role Of Formative Individual And Family Experiences In Predicting Emerging Adult Substance Use, Attachment, And Mental Health Outcomes, Acacia Lopez

Theses and Dissertations

Individuals raised in a grandfamily, or family structure in which a grandparent raises their grandchildren, experience higher rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), insecure attachment, and negative mental health outcomes during childhood. Literature on outcomes of these individuals across the lifespan is extremely limited, however, and it is unclear how formative individual and family experiences of being raised by grandparents carry into emerging adulthood (e.g., 18 to 25-years-old). Emerging adulthood is a developmental stage marked by significant instability and unpredictability that is linked with increased vulnerability to mental health concerns and substance use. It has been identified as an important …

Finite Element Modeling Of Plasma Membrane Injury From Mechanical Stress: A Combined Finite Element And Machine Learning Approach, Eric Flynn Mabowitz

Theses and Dissertations

Low back pain is a leading cause of disability across a wide range of occupations and environments. Exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) has been linked to an increased prevalence of low back pain, as well as certain neurophysiological complications. While current understanding of WBV effects is largely based on tissue- and whole-body-level studies, a significant gap remains in knowledge regarding how vibrational forces propagate through individual cells. This knowledge gap limits a comprehensive understanding of how these forces affect the human body at the microscopic level. To address this, the present study employs both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) finite …

Synthetic Mrna Induced Tf1.17-Specific Antibody Response Against Tritrichomonas Foetus For Preputial Delivery In Bulls, Kenzie Mcatee

Theses and Dissertations

Bovine trichomoniasis, caused by Tritrichomonas foetus, remains a persistent reproductive disease in cattle due to asymptomatic carriage in bulls and lack of effective treatments. This thesis evaluated the use of synthetic mRNA to drive expression of TF1.17- specific antibodies, targeting a conserved surface adhesin essential for parasite colonization. Membrane-anchored and secreted IgG1 constructs were transfected into bovine kidney cells, resulting in time-dependent antibody expression verified via NanoLuc luminescence. In vivo, aerosolized mRNA administration to bull calves led to localized antibody expression in preputial secretions. Although immunofluorescence assays detected fluorescence signal, high background limited interpretation of specific binding to T. foetus. …

Family Matters: How Caregiver Influence And Internal Locus Of Control Relate To Academics, Maia Mclin

Theses and Dissertations

Academics in college predicts life outcomes; students from lower socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds often face greater challenges. One such population, consisting of many individuals from marginalized backgrounds, are those raised by nontraditional parents. This study investigated predictors of academics among 357 college students, examining authoritative parenting style, intrinsic motivation, academic locus of control (LoC), SES, and caregiver type (parental vs. non-traditional). Academics was assessed using two composite scores: 'academic knowledge' (GPA/ACT) and 'compensatory attention' (working memory via n-back task accuracy and attention/concentration via SMALSI-C). Hierarchical regressions revealed that higher authoritative parenting, higher SES, and being raised by biological parents significantly …

Investigation Of Guayule Resin As An Oil-Based Wood Treatment, Jordan Miller Aug 2025

Investigation Of Guayule Resin As An Oil-Based Wood Treatment, Jordan Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Development of alternative treatments for wood product protection is an ongoing focus throughout the wood products industries. All manufacturers hope to increase the use life of their products, while ensuring that their products do not have a harmful impact on their surrounding environment. One way of approaching this is to source potential components from other agricultural sources. Guayule resin is produced as a by-product of rubber extraction from the guayule plant (Parthenium argentatum). The resin has been reported to have insecticidal and microbial properties, but there are numerous problems with utilization, including how to extract it and apply it due …

Sweetpotato Insect Pests: Virus Vector Management And Rearing, Rachel Emily Morrison Aug 2025

Sweetpotato Insect Pests: Virus Vector Management And Rearing, Rachel Emily Morrison

Theses and Dissertations

Sweetpotatoes (Ipomoea batatas) are vegetatively propagated through slips, making them prone to viral buildup. Aphids are insect pests known for transmitting viruses to crops, which reduces yield. This study examined different options for aphid management to reduce the spread of potyviruses: crop borders, crop oils, and insecticides. However, the results of this research showed that treatments were not successful at reducing the spread of the four potyviruses tested. An additional objective was to establish a colony of banded cucumber beetles (Diabrotica balteata) in the laboratory. These beetles are a leaf-feeding and root-feeding pest of sweet potatoes. Two colonies of banded …

Unboxing The Black Box: Graph-Based Interpretability In Transformer Models, Ramak Nassiri Aug 2025

Unboxing The Black Box: Graph-Based Interpretability In Transformer Models, Ramak Nassiri

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis introduces a novel interpretability framework for transformer encoder models by hypothesizing that their internal embedding updates define a state transition system. We propose that transformers implicitly learn token-to-token influence dynamics, which can be analyzed using graph-theoretic methods. To validate this, we construct transition graphs from embedding changes and rank token importance using the PageRank algorithm. We develop two transformer models from scratch: a self-supervised model that incorporates serotype tokens to learn contextualized embeddings, and a supervised model initialized with these embeddings. Cosine similarity analysis of their token influence patterns reveals strong structural alignment, with values exceeding 93%. This …

Spawning And Rearing Techniques For Improved Production Of White Crappie (Pomoxis Anularis), Matthew E. Nichols Aug 2025

Spawning And Rearing Techniques For Improved Production Of White Crappie (Pomoxis Anularis), Matthew E. Nichols

Theses and Dissertations

White Crappie (Pomoxis annularis) is a popular species, commonly propagated in hatcheries to support fisheries and supplement natural populations during cyclical declines. However, limited information exists regarding the effects of extended broodstock holding periods (>4 weeks), which are critical for enhancing flexibility in hatchery practices. Furthermore, rearing larval-to-juvenile crappie in outdoor ponds would greatly benefit from optimized fertilization and stocking densities to improve growth and survival rates. Additionally, dietary preferences during early life stages remain poorly understood, yet are essential for maximizing production efficiency. This study found holding broodstock for > 6 weeks can significantly reduce fertilization percentages. We also …

Markov Chain Monte Carlo Techniques– Innovations In Lifetime Data Analysis And Missing Value Imputations, Tobias Omondi Oketch Aug 2025

Markov Chain Monte Carlo Techniques– Innovations In Lifetime Data Analysis And Missing Value Imputations, Tobias Omondi Oketch

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation develops scalable Bayesian solutions for two critical challenges in modern data analysis: modeling failure times and imputing missing biological data. First, we introduce an adaptive semi-parametric MCMC framework for Weibull lifetime modeling, addressing the lack of conjugate priors and multidimensional sufficient statistics. Using hierarchical modeling and the No-U-Turn Sampler (NUTS) in STAN, we evaluate 24 prior combinations across 72 simulated datasets. The method yields robust parameter estimates under increasing and decreasing hazard rates and proves effective in predicting prostate cancer patient survival. Second, we assess imputation strategies for high-throughput proteomics data, where missingness distorts signal integrity. We compare …

Timber Price Trends, Transmission, And The Impact On Loblolly Pine Plantation Management In The United States South., Samjhana Panthi

Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzed the impact of pine timber price trends on optimal rotation age and price transmission relationship in the timber market in the US South. Price trends and volatilities were incorporated into discounted cash flow analyses to determine stochastic optimal rotation age. The results revealed that negative price trends reduced the optimal rotation age and maximum land expectation values compared with the base case of the Faustmann model's constant timber prices. Also, I performed a vertical price transmission study for the US South pine timber market using a Smooth Transition Autoregressive (STAR) model. Price transmission was linear in the …

Impact Of Overseeding Cover Crops On Dryland Soybeans In Mississippi Delta, Michael C. Pruden Aug 2025

Impact Of Overseeding Cover Crops On Dryland Soybeans In Mississippi Delta, Michael C. Pruden

Theses and Dissertations

In the Mississippi Delta, continuous dryland soybean (Glycine max L.) production practice is a selection for those that do not or cannot irrigate their crops. However, no crop rotation results in yield losses due to diseases, increased insect population, weed species pressure, nutrient leaching, and soil erosion. Incorporation of cover crops might offer potential benefits but needs further investigation. The objectives were to determine the optimum cover crop planting time (R6 and harvest) and ideal cover crop species, and evaluate their impact on dryland soybean grain yield, quality, and plant population. R6 overseeded cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) produced the …

Unraveling Quantum Properties Of Novel Two-Dimensional Systems Using A First-Principles Approach, Binod Regmi Aug 2025

Unraveling Quantum Properties Of Novel Two-Dimensional Systems Using A First-Principles Approach, Binod Regmi

Theses and Dissertations

We used first-principles density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of an oxygen crystal in a copper slab, a ferrimagnetic electride with highly tunable magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE), and the Fermi surface analysis of different kagome metal phases. The Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) exchange-correlation functional was used in the Vienna ab initio simulation package (VASP) for all these calculations. Because of dimensionality reduction, the electronic properties of copper change significantly at the two-dimensional (2D) scale due to whichwe observe more reconstruction in the geometry of the Fermi surface. Dimensionality reduction also influences charge transport. Moreover, we present …

Evaluation Of Soil Steaming, Cover Crops, And Allelopathy: An Integrated And Sustainable Weed Management Strategy In Sweetpotatoes, Alaina Marie Richardson Aug 2025

Evaluation Of Soil Steaming, Cover Crops, And Allelopathy: An Integrated And Sustainable Weed Management Strategy In Sweetpotatoes, Alaina Marie Richardson

Theses and Dissertations

Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) is a persistent weed in sweetpotato and vegetable cropping systems caused by its aggressive growth habit and limited control options. The present study assessed two alternative, chemical-free methods: steaming the soil and the use of allelopathic cover crops. Greenhouse and field experiments showed that steaming suppressed the germination of yellow nutsedge effectively and that treatments for 45 min provided the highest control of all the soil depths tested (100%). A leachate experiment examined the allelopathy of five cover crops against yellow nutsedge and showed that buckwheat and cereal rye had the largest reductions in shoot …

Microbiomics Of Amazonian Fishes And Associations With Human Pathogens (Mycobacterium Ulcerans), Matthew Edwin Scott

Theses and Dissertations

The Amazon Rainforest and Guiana Shield are recognized as two of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth, particularly when considering macroorganisms. Relatively little attention has been paid to the microbiological diversity within rainforest ecosystems, or to the interactions among macro- and microbiological communities. To this end, I characterized the effects of habitat and host phylogenic parameters on the gut microbiome of freshwater fishes along the coast and within the Approuague River watershed in French Guiana. The results indicate a river continuum effect on the microbial composition of fishes, as well as a similar continuum pattern along the coast of French …
