Evaluating Dosimetric Outcomes In A Prostate Rapid Plan Model: A Comparison Of Prostate Treatment Plans With And Without Standardized Planning Structures, Erica Wartman
Masters Projects
Abstract
Knowledge-based planning (KBP) using RapidPlan (RP) has demonstrated the ability to produce high quality radiation therapy treatment plans while reducing time. This study evaluated whether the inclusion of department specific standardized planning structures, including rings and other optimization tools, improves plan quality when using a prostate and lymph node RP model, or if the model alone is sufficient to provide a quality plan without the use of these additional planning structures.
Ten previously treated Prostate+LN patients were replanned using the departmental RP model in Varian Eclipse treatment planning system.1 For each patient, two plans were created, one with standardized …

The development of constructed floating wetlands (CFWs) as a nature-based solution for water treatment has progressed over the last 25 years. However, full-scale CFW adoption remains relatively limited due in part to the uncertainty regarding the costs of CFWs in terms of capital and operational expenditure (CAPEX and OPEX) and treatment capacity. This study reports on the costs of 11 international CFW schemes including the factors affecting CAPEX and OPEX and levelized costs of nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The estimated levelized CAPEX and OPEX ranged from US$15/m² to $2537/m² and from $0.5/m² y⁻¹ to $181/m² y⁻¹, respectively, for CFW schemes …

Collecting The Strands: A Psychoanalytic Study Of Hair-Pulling In Women, Jacklyn Corsitto
Collecting The Strands: A Psychoanalytic Study Of Hair-Pulling In Women, Jacklyn Corsitto
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigated compulsive hair-pulling (i.e., trichotillomania) in women from a psychoanalytic perspective. The assumption, from a psychoanalytic viewpoint, is that the symptom of hair-pulling serves meaningful, and multiple, psychical purposes that should be analyzed rather than immediately removed, as would be the case in the current gold standard of treatment—behavioral therapy with habit reversal training. This behavioral modality leaves little to no room for exploring the historical, relational, symbolic, and emotional dimensions of hair-pulling. This dissertation fleshed out these dimensions and investigated what hair-pulling was doing for the individual, what its function or purpose was, and, indeed, what ideational …

Understanding The Effects Of Genetic Variation On Maize And Pennycress Root System Architectures And Their Interaction With Nitrogen, Alexander Euway Liu
Understanding The Effects Of Genetic Variation On Maize And Pennycress Root System Architectures And Their Interaction With Nitrogen, Alexander Euway Liu
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Roots are a critical yet hidden part of plants, providing physical support and access to resources such as nutrients and water. The development of a plant’s root system across time and space is referred to as root system architecture, which influences the effectiveness of resource capture. In modern agriculture, applications of nitrogen fertilizers are critical to maintain high yield. However, up to 70% of applied nitrogen is not utilized by the plant and escapes into waterways and the atmosphere, causing environmental harm. Efficient nitrogen uptake is limited by the ability of the plant to access and absorb nitrogen through its …
Investigating Food Web Dynamics Of Great Lakes Coastal Wetlands Using A Novel Stable Isotope Approach, Alyssa M. Smith
Investigating Food Web Dynamics Of Great Lakes Coastal Wetlands Using A Novel Stable Isotope Approach, Alyssa M. Smith
Masters Theses
Coastal wetlands of the Great Lakes support abundant populations of fish, invertebrates, and vegetation, though the trophic linkages connecting primary production and lower consumers is not well understood in these systems. We implemented a multiple-tracer approach, pairing traditional food web isotope tracers like carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) with total mercury concentrations (THg). We predicted that filamentous algae would be the dominant energy resource in the diet of lower trophic-level invertebrates in the Grand River Estuary, a network of riverine coastal wetlands adjacent to lake Michigan. In addition, we predicted that adding THg as a tracer would improve the resolution …
Should School Board Elections Be Partisan? Analyzing Elite Discourse In The Debate Over The Structure Of Local Elections, Bre'arra M. Long
Should School Board Elections Be Partisan? Analyzing Elite Discourse In The Debate Over The Structure Of Local Elections, Bre'arra M. Long
McNair Summer Research Program
The goal of this research paper is to identify the most prevalent arguments for and against partisan school board elections while also examining what differences, if any, exist between Republicans and Democrats with respect to the way they talk about the issue. The interdisciplinary fields of political science and linguistics provide helpful context to the effectiveness of political communication in smaller scale, yet salient elections in communities where impacts are most directly felt. My interest lies in how the nationalization of politics influences local government and elections, and how language and the media act as conduits for that relationship. It …

The Effects Of Varying Temperatures And Food Availability On The Reproductive Output Of The Acorn Barnacle: Chthamalus Fissus, Karina L. Rog
McNair Summer Research Program
Climate change is predicted to intensify ocean warming and the reduction in phytoplankton abundance, potentially disrupting reproductive processes in filter-feeding intertidal invertebrates. This study investigated the combined effects of water temperature increases and food availability on the reproductive output on Chthamalus fissus, a dominant intertidal barnacle species found along the Southern California coastline. Using a controlled laboratory experiment, adult barnacles collected from the nearshore rocky intertidal habitat in La Jolla, California, were exposed to two temperature regimes (ambient water temperature ~ 18°C and elevated water temperature ~ 20-21°C) and two food concentration treatments (low and high phytoplankton and rotifer …

The blood-brain barrier (BBB), formed by specialized endothelial cells (ECs), regulates the extracellular composition of the central nervous system (CNS). Little is known about whether there are regional specializations of the BBB that may control the function of specific neural circuits. We use single cell RNA-seq to characterize ECs from nine CNS regions in male mice: cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum, spinal cord, striatum, thalamus, hypothalamus, midbrain, and medulla/pons. Although there is a core BBB transcriptional profile, there are significant regional specializations. Stra6, a retinoid transporter, is highly enriched in the BBB of the nucleus accumbens shell (ShNAc) and ventral cochlear nucleus, …

Under What Conditions? A University Pathway Program Evaluation, Michael Burke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As U.S. universities face a declining domestic applicant pool, commonly referred to as the “enrollment cliff,” international student recruitment provides a practical strategy for offsetting domestic enrollment shortfalls. One such strategy for increasing international student enrollment is through the establishment of university pathway programs that grant conditional admission to international applicants who fail to meet English language proficiency requirements but are otherwise academically admissible. As a baseline program evaluation, this study utilized a quantitative methods approach employing logistical regression analysis to determine if incoming standardized English language proficiency test scores, English as a Second Language (ESL) course GPA, and student …

The Application Of Macrophage-Targeted, Anti-Inflammatory Celecoxib Nanoemulgel For Nerve Regeneration In Peripheral Nerve Injury, Lu Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) refers to damage to the nerve located outside the brain and spinal cord. PNI is commonly caused by a physical accident (trauma) or medical operation1, 2. The impact on the quality of life of PNI patients is directly correlated to neuropathic pain, resultant depression, and increased stress2. Even after recovering from the PNI, patients still experience phantom pain and lose the ability to work due to the loss of tactile sensory or motor function2-4. However, unlike damage to the central nervous system (CNS), peripheral nerves can regenerate because macrophages clean …

This study evaluated the efficacy of lactic acid bacteria and their metabolites in mitigating the risk of foodborne pathogens in HNS when compared to conventional chemical treatments. Hoagland’s HNS were prepared according to the manufacturer’s instructions and inoculated with Salmonella Typhimurium, Escherichia coli 0157:H7, and Listeria innocua at 105 CFU/mL cell concentration. These nutrient solutions were subjected to treatment with various concentrations of Lactobacillus rhamnosus live cells, a cell-free extract (CFE) of L. rhamnosus metabolites, sodium hypochlorite and peroxyacetic acid at 22 ± 1 …

Where Pipes Meet The Water: Urban Infrastructure In Tijuana, Joab Barrientos
McNair Summer Research Program
Tijuana's rapid urban growth and industrial development have placed significant pressure on its water infrastructure, resulting in ongoing pollution concerns in the Tijuana River Watershed and elsewhere in and beyond the city. In many areas of the city, rapid urban growth has outpaced the building of critical infrastructure like sewage and stormwater systems. These factors have left neighborhoods at risk for a long time. At the same time, industrial growth has often relied on old infrastructure or happened without the right systems in place. Although poor water quality has been a problem for years, few studies have used spatial analysis …

Information on soil resources in volcanic landscapes presents a high potential for agricultural land development, but its development is always faced with the potential for continuous land degradation. This study aims to reduce the rate of land degradation through the application of vegetative conservation in erosion-prone Loto agrotourism area, Ternate Island. The research location is focused on erosion-prone areas. The research consisted of a soil resource inventory and a vegetative conservation application. The vegetative conservation application method used a Randomized Block Design (RBD) pattern, composed of 2 factors. The first factor is mulching, namely: no mulching (M0) and mulching (M1), …
