The ability to distinguish between threatening, rewarding, and neutral cues is adaptative and crucial for survival. However, individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often show poor knowledge of cue contingencies and heightened fear responses even in the presence of cues that signify safety, potentially due to atypical perceptions of neutral cues. We investigated whether perceiving neutral cues as more rewarding or threatening influences conditioned inhibition of fear and whether PTSD symptoms moderate this relationship. Trauma-exposed adults (N = 84; 64 % female; 76 % non-Hispanic white) completed a Fear, Reward, and Neutral Discrimination (FRND) Task involving geometric shapes paired with …

Brain development begins with neurogenesis in progenitor zones and ends with expansive, intricately-patterned cellular diversity in the adult brain. We took advantage of bioelectric interactions between DNA and embryonic tissue to perform "stereo-tracking," a developmental targeting strategy that differentially labels cells at different depths within progenitor zones. This 3D labeling was achieved by delivery of plasmids with distinct electrokinetic mobilities in utero. We applied stereo-tracking with light sheet imaging in the cerebellum and identified that Purkinje cells follow embryonically committed developmental trajectories, linking distinct progenitor zone subfields to the mature topography of the cerebellar cortex. We additionally identified an unexpected …

British Academic Psychiatry At A Crossroads: Lessons From The Past 20years And Priorities For The Next 20 Years, Rohit Shankar, Laura Bowater, Richard Laugharne, Derek K. Tracy, Hugo Critchley, Allan H. Young, John R. Terry, Dinesh Bhugra, Regi Alexander
Peninsula Medical School
The past twenty years, British academic psychiatry has made significant scientific advances in neurosciences, psychopharmacology, imaging and genetics with patients increasingly being involved as research partners. However, this progress has coincided with marked structural deterioration. Despite a 50% expansion in medical school places and rising mental health needs, full-time academic psychiatrists numbers fell from 330 in 2004 to 206 in 2023. This reduction has constrained research capacity, limited educational opportunities, and exacerbated regional disparities. The current academic landscape is precarious. While research-active services deliver demonstrably better patient outcomes and service outcomes (productivity/efficiency), the research workforce remains small and unevenly distributed. …

Valproate is highly effective at treating epilepsy and bipolar disorder. It faces prescribing restrictions in men due to concerns it causes testicular dysfunction and infertility. These mostly stem from animal models – the human evidence is limited and conflicting. We report the largest ever retrospective cohort study of infertility in men with epilepsy or bipolar disorder, using real-world healthcare data from TriNetX. 91,917 of the men are exposed to valproate, and 535,803 unexposed. Cohorts are propensity score matched for a comprehensive set of baseline covariates, and survival analysis is undertaken using Cox-proportional hazards models. No significant difference is seen between …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The Formosan sika deer (Cervus nippon taiouanus), an endemic Taiwanese subspecies, holds a pivotal role in local conservation. This study addresses a significant knowledge gap by establishing population-specific reference intervals (RIs) for this species, as existing RIs are based on limited captive populations and may not accurately reflect the health of semi-free-ranging cohorts. We analyzed 632 sampling events from 232 healthy adult deer within Kenting National Park over 12 years (2013–2024). This study adhered to ASVCP guidelines, establishing instrument-specific RIs and employing linear mixed-effects models (LMMs) to evaluate the complex interactions among analytical instruments, sex, and body weight. …

Designing Childhood Spaces: Towards An Architecture That Responds To The Child’S Innate Needs And Enhances Interaction, Abdelrahman Mohamed Mousa
Journal of Engineering Research
: The creation of a building for children is no longer just a shelter, but rather a spatial unit for 2020, a diverse and generally direct difference in building the child's personality, which limits the strengthening of control over the child on the one hand, and the direction in which he lives. It is a loud cry, one that is diverse: children have realized us, and the reference to the cry is that we find ourselves participating in dealing properly with children and also in society years later. It is believed that attention to children during the preschool stage significantly …

Background
Languages vary in their syntactic (e.g. word order in sentences), lexical (e.g. presence of specific word classes), and morphological (e.g. inflectional or derivational forms of words) properties. This cross-linguistic variation in language typology influences the manifestation of agrammatic symptoms. However, most theoretical models of agrammatism are based on English and a few European languages, limiting their generalizability. This narrow focus neglects the rich syntactic, lexical and morphological variations available in languages globally. Clinically, the lack of language-specific characteristics of agrammatic impairments limits translational potential for precise and improved diagnosis. The Aphasia in South Asian Languages (ASAL) project addresses this …

Seasonal wetlands help meet the biological needs of various autumn migrating and wintering waterfowl species in North America (Reinecke et al. 1989). Management of seasonally flooded impoundments often uses soil and vegetation disturbances and water management to promote early succession plants that produce abundant seeds for foraging birds (Low and Bellrose 1944, Kross et al. 2008). Native bees (Hymenoptera: Anthophila) also occupy these wetland habitats, as they are attracted to a diversity of flowering plants (Stephenson et al. 2018).

Introduction: This study quantitively compared the efficiency of removing a novel radiopaque smear layer using different activation instruments. Methods: 60 extracted human mandibular premolars with single canals were decoronated, accessed, instrumented with rotary files to the working length, and radiographed. The root canal was filled with a solution containing insoluble lead salts, in order to impregnate the smear layer, making it radiopaque. All teeth were radiographed to confirm the presence of a radiopaque smear layer. Activation of 6% NaOCl was completed using one of four techniques on 15 teeth each; (1) manual agitation, (2) EndoActivator (EA), (3) SmartLite Pro EndoActivator …

Background: Somatostatin receptor 2 (SSTR2), a G protein-coupled receptor, is overexpressed in multiple malignancies, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). While SSTR2 has traditionally been viewed as an inhibitory receptor involved in suppressing hormone secretion and cell proliferation, emerging evidence suggests a more complex role in cancer biology. However, the functional implications of SSTR2 expression in HCC remain poorly understood. This study aimed to systematically investigate the molecular landscape associated with SSTR2 expression in HCC and evaluate its potential as a therapeutic target.
Methods: SSTR2 expression patterns across 22 tumor types were assessed using TNMplot, and its expression in HCC was further …
