Disinformation As Ground-Shifting In Great-Power Competition, Sorin Adam Matei
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
Disinformation, distinct from misinformation, replaces accepted principles of objectivity and verifiability with novelty, framing, authority, self-reference, and conformity to create a new “truth paradigm.” This article introduces a novel definition and framework for understanding disinformation as a strategic tool in great-power competition. It includes a review of case studies, such as Russian disinformation campaigns during the Russia-Ukraine War and analyzes cognitive biases and social behaviors that facilitate the spread of disinformation. Policy and military practitioners will find actionable insights into countering disinformation, including its sociopsychological mechanisms and proposed targeted counterstrategies to protect the integrity of information flows in defense and …

Over the past 20 years, the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) have gained significant interest. While AI has been implemented to various degrees in several disciplines, its unique applications in head and neck cancer (HNC) remain underdeveloped. This narrative review examines the existing body of literature regarding the use of AI in HNC. Studies to date have demonstrated AI’s utility across multiple phases of the HNC treatment continuum. Despite its promise, integrating AI into clinical practice faces several challenges, including concerns about system integrity, generalizability, privacy, and bias. In this review, we address these challenges and offer insights into future …
Long-Term Behavior Of Subordinated Branching Processes With Prevailing Emigration, George Yanev
Long-Term Behavior Of Subordinated Branching Processes With Prevailing Emigration, George Yanev
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
This paper deals into the long-term behavior of subordinated critical branching processes with migration. We focus on scenarios where emigration is the dominant factor and introduce additional randomness in timing through a subordination mechanism, involving renewal processes. The key findings highlight how the initial population size and the interarrival mean time influence both asymptotic behavior of the non-extinction probability and corresponding Yaglom type limit theorems. We also study an alternating regenerative process, when the population cycles between zero and positive states. This research complements previous studies for processes when immigration prevails over emigration.

Despite the success of targeted inhibitors in cutaneous melanoma, therapeutic responses are limited by the aged tumor microenvironment and drug-tolerant residual cells. Given the similarities between drug tolerance and cellular dormancy, we studied the dormancy marker, nuclear receptor subfamily 2 group F member 1 (NR2F1), in response to BRAF-V600E inhibitors (BRAFi) plus MEK inhibitors (MEKi) in BRAF-mutant melanoma models. Transcriptomic analysis of melanoma patient samples treated with BRAFi + MEKi showed increased NR2F1. NR2F1 was highly expressed in the drug-tolerant invasive cell state of minimal residual disease in patient-derived and mouse-derived xenografts on BRAFi + MEKi. NR2F1 over-expression was sufficient …

Design, Synthesis And Antibacterial Evaluation Of Some New Pyrrolidine Derivatives Based Pyrazole Moiety Via Vilsmeier-Haack Reaction, Sabah Salim Al-Dulaimi, Muna Sameer Al-Rawi
Baghdad Science Journal
The following work involved synthesizing a new series of substituted Pyrrolidine/4H-Pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde derivatives [IV]a-e derived from captopril known as an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor drug, using the Vilsmeier-Haack reaction. There were some steps involved for synthesizing new hydrazone compounds [III]a-e via refluxing equal mole of captopril hydrazide [II] with different substituted aromatic ketone (acetophenone, 4-hydroxyacetophenone, 4-aminoacetophenone, 4-nitroacetophenone, and 4-bromoacetophenone) in benzene via condensation reaction. The newly substituted 4H-pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde derivatives [IV]a-e are obtained via a cyclization reaction of substitute hydrazones [III]a-e heating with POCl3/DMF, under Vilsmeier–Haack reaction. The prepared pyrrolidine derivatives-based pyrazole …

Notch1 Reverses Immune Suppression In Small Cell Lung Cancer Through Reactivation Of Sting, Yoo Sun Kim, Haobin Chen, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Downregulation of antigen presentation and lack of immune infiltration are defining features of small cell lung cancer (SCLC), limiting response to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB). While a high-MHC class I, immune-inflamed subset benefits from ICB, underlying mechanisms of immune response in SCLC have yet to be elucidated. Here we show that in the IMpower133 clinical trial, high, but not low, NOTCH1 expression was significantly associated with longer survival with the addition of ICB to chemotherapy among approximately 80% of SCLC patients with NE-enriched tumors (ASCL1-enriched, HR 0.39, P = 0.0012; NEUROD1-enriched, HR 0.44, P = 0.024). Overexpression or pharmacologic activation …

Longitudinal Association Of Fatigue With Cytokines Over The Course Of Hematologic Cancer Treatment, Heeju Kim, Joon Ho Moon, Tenko Raykov
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: Assessing and managing symptom is a core role of oncology nurses. Fatigue is the most common and distressing symptoms in cancer patients. Mechanism-specific interventions are not currently available and most interventions are supportive care, such as exercise. Its pathophysiological mechanisms are still unclear, complex and multifactorial. A plausible hypothetical mechanisms is the pro-inflammatory cytokines dysregulation hypothesis. Yet, the evidence for which cytokines and what time point would play a role in fatigue experience is uncertain at this time point due to design issues of the studies.
Objectives: We examined (a) the patterns of changes in fatigue severity during chemotherapy …

The Potential Benefits Of Co-Design In Dog-Assisted Treatment Programs For Veterans Seeking Mental Health Care, Parvin (Pary) Bahmanyari, Pauleen Bennett, Tiffani Howell
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Veterans are more likely than the general population to experience a range of mental health problems. While many veteran mental health support programs are available, veterans may struggle to access and engage with these services for various reasons (e.g., a stigmatized perception of mental health disorders, mistrust). Animal-assisted services have become more popular in civilian and military health care settings where traditional therapies (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy) may not always be effective. Assistance dogs, for example, which live with veterans to provide disability support, have been successfully employed for veteran mental health. Unfortunately, a subgroup of veterans may miss out …
