Researching Unheard And Silenced Voices, Vanessa Heaslip Sep 2025

Researching Unheard And Silenced Voices, Vanessa Heaslip

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Around 32% of the global population are at risk of social exclusion (Cuesta et al., 2024). This has significant impact upon morbidity, mortality and quality of life (Aldridge et al., 2017). In research, these individuals are underserved (NIHR 2024), perceived to be ‘difficult’, ‘hard to reach’ or in need of protection, so their voices and experiences remain unheard. This keynote shall explore some of these challenges, share ideas and explore ways to promote inclusive research.

A Novel Scaffold-Based Model For Stage Ii Pressure Injury Simulation: Protocol Development And Future Directions In Tissue Engineering, Skyler B. Wrubleski

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

This study developed a 3D tissue-engineered scaffold to mimic human sacral skin for modeling pressure injuries. The scaffold consisted of a composite hydrogel of sodium alginate, gelatin, and tannic acid, crosslinked with calcium chloride. Swelling tests showed moderate hydration capacity, while wound mimic formation using a custom 3D-printed apparatus produced consistent morphology and dimensions comparable to human dermal tissue. The scaffold maintained structural integrity under prolonged compressive forces, demonstrating viability for pressure injury studies. Future work will incorporate a bilayer model with keratinocytes and fibroblasts and introduce elastin to enhance elasticity and mechanical properties. This approach aims to improve in …

Youth And Gender Equity In Decision Making, Nada Chaabene Sep 2025

Youth And Gender Equity In Decision Making, Nada Chaabene

COP30

With the COP30 choosing “mutirão”, which means collective community work, as their central theme (COP30, 2024), the president of the conference in Brazil emphasizes that it’s an opportunity to connect global actions and create a mobilization chain of the expertise of people from various communities and from different sectors to move from negotiation to concrete action (COP30, 2024). This cannot be done without a proper representation of all the underrepresented communities of young people and women, as discussed in the Sharm El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda (SAA).

This paper explores the ongoing challenges of inclusive representation in decision-making spaces like the COP. …

Research-based course design is beneficial to both the instructor and the students by providing project ownership, independence, increased engagement, and publishable results. Paramecium, a single-celled eukaryote, is a common organism observed in many high school and college classrooms that can be easily cultured and manipulated to navigate through guided student-driven research projects. Presented here are research-centered student projects that include designing and creating an RNA interference (RNAi) plasmid to deplete a gene product in Paramecium. Because RNAi can be used in a large number of model organisms, the techniques presented can be applied in a variety of ways. …

Operationalising Blue Carbon: Australia's Framework As A Model For Global Nature-Based Climate Mitigation, Chelsea Golding Sep 2025

Operationalising Blue Carbon: Australia's Framework As A Model For Global Nature-Based Climate Mitigation, Chelsea Golding

COP30

Blue carbon ecosystems offer a critical solution to nature-based climate change mitigation. These habitats not only sequester significant amounts of carbon per hectare but also support biodiversity and increase climate resilience for coastal communities. Yet, despite the widespread recognition of these benefits in global climate discussions, most existing carbon sequestration and crediting frameworks remain focused on terrestrial ecosystems and fail to account for the greater variability in marine and costal habitats. This policy gap creates a significant barrier in the capacity for costal carbon sequestration projects to be scaled globally. Australia has addressed this implementation gap at a national level …

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Pancreatic/PKR-like endoplasmic reticulum (ER) kinase (PERK) is a kinase that, in response to ER stress, mediates dual homeostatic and pro-apoptotic signaling. Thus, intricate regulation is required for physiological function. Attempts to modulate PERK activity have shown that the determinants of adaptive vs. maladaptive signaling remain ambiguous. Here, with purified protein, we provide evidence that PERK binds copper, identifies residues required for interaction, and demonstrates that copper is necessary for kinase activity. Furthermore, cellular PERK activity can be modulated via copper availability, and this regulatory relationship can be manipulated to dictate ER stress tolerance. Critically, these phenomena translate to phenotypes in …

Trcaptionnet++: A High-Performance Encoder-Decoder Based Deep Turkish Image Captioning Model Fine-Tuned With A Large-Scale Set Of Pretrain Data, Serdar Yildiz, Abbas Memi̇ş, Songül Varli

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces a novel and high-performance encoder-decoder-based deep model called TRCaption Net++ for generic Turkish image captioning tasks. The proposed model is an improved and refined version of TRCap tionNet, which essentially employs a CLIP (contrastive language–image pretraining) image encoder, a feature projection layer and a BERT (bidirectional encoder representations from transformers) text decoder. Within the scope of the study, the regular TRCaptionNet model was trained and specifically fine-tuned with a massive set of image data. In this respect, approximately 2,000,000 random images representing the words in the MS COCO and Flickr caption sets were retrieved through web crawling …
