From A Shtetl House To An Urban Apartment: The Soviet Jewish Home Negotiated, Transformed, And Reimagined, Anna Kushkova
Jewish Folklore and Ethnology
This essay argues that despite the powerful forces of assimilation, official campaigns against Jewish religion/languages, and grassroots/state antisemitism, the “Jewish home” did not disappear, as is sometimes assumed, but continued to present a site of Jewish ethnic production and transmission, creativity, and resistance during the Soviet regime. In the Soviet Union, especially in the postwar period, Jewish ethnic culture was forced to leave the public sphere, where it became unwelcome and even dangerous, and withdrew into the less visible space of domestic interiors. The degree of Jewish public presence varied geographically: the situation was generally better in the Baltic Republics, …

Abundance And Distribution Of An Exceptional Number Of Red-Necked Grebes In Western Lake Ontario During Spring 2019, Ross W. Wood, Shannon S. Badzinski, Barbara A. Campbell, Brigitte Collins, Shawn W. Meyer, Denby Sadler
Ontario Birds
The Red-necked Grebe is a regular spring migrant on the Great Lakes and occasionally observed in very large numbers, particularly along the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. Aerial surveys were flown to document abundance, distribution and habitat use of waterfowl and conspicuous waterbirds along the Ontario shorelines of the lower Great Lakes. On 7 April 2019, we observed a very large number of Red-necked Grebes, estimated at 12,395 individuals, concentrated in western Lake Ontario. The majority of these birds were located offshore along a 20 km span of shoreline between Frenchman’s Bay (Pickering, Ontario) and Bluffer’s Beach (Scarborough, Ontario). However, …

Feeding Niche Overlap And Segregation Among Three Grouse Species Wintering In Hudson Bay Lowlands Of Northern Ontario, Vernon G. Thomas
Feeding Niche Overlap And Segregation Among Three Grouse Species Wintering In Hudson Bay Lowlands Of Northern Ontario, Vernon G. Thomas
Ontario Birds
The Hudson Bay Lowlands of northern Ontario (comprising tundra and taiga) provide winter habitats for Willow Ptarmigan and Sharp-tailed Grouse as well as Rock Ptarmigan that occasionally fly in from arctic and subarctic regions. Winter food niche segregation/overlap was measured among these three species to investigate potential feeding competition; tamarack and berries were quantified by number and mass in the crops of grouse collected from the vicinity of the former community of Winisk, Ontario (now Peawanuck). All grouse species fed on birch and it was the principal food for Sharp-tailed Grouse. Willow was eaten primarily by Willow and Rock Ptarmigan. …

What Do Students Read? Let’S Talk About Data-Informed Library Collections Planning For Student Success, Nat Gustafson-Sundell, Heidi J. Southworth, Evan Rusch
Library Services Publications
Do students read? What do they read? What kinds of information resources are most used by students? What subject areas are most used by students? What do they need from their library if they are going to complete assignments? How can the library plan ahead to meet student needs? The modern academic library is mostly online and highly data driven. The MSU Library Services Collection Management Technology team briefly demonstrated some of the tools they’ve developed to understand student needs. They showcased some of the instruments they’ve used to communicate collections plans to administration, as they’ve strategized to conform to …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) in rodent models has been used to longitudinally image retinal changes, to define end points for more costly or time-consuming experiments, and to better understand the pathophysiology underlying OCT findings in human diseases. No standardization of rodent OCT reporting currently exists. Here, we aim to establish consensus recommendation for reporting results from retinal OCT studies in rodents.
METHODS: Initial recommendations were developed based on the APOSTEL criteria for quantitative OCT reporting in humans by a core team. Using a modified Delphi process, an expert panel of rodent OCT researchers (N = 31) …

The authors regret that they omitted a citation to ref. 1 in their original article. This citation should be included in Section 3 (Result and discussion) before Section 3.1 (FT-IR spectroscopy and XRD analysis). The authors wish to add the following paragraphs to the discussion section of the original article, to be read in Section 3 (Result and discussion) before Section 3.1 (FT-IR spectroscopy and XRD analysis), after the sentence “.Finally, hyperthermia application was appraised and all results were evaluated.” in order to clarify the novelty of this work over ref. 1. In the previous work, we developed a multifunctional …

Microbial nitrogen (N) fixation accounts for c. 97% of natural N inputs to terrestrial ecosystems. These microbes can be free-living in the soil and leaf litter (asymbiotic) or in symbiosis with plants. Warming is expected to increase N-fixation rates because warmer temperatures favor the growth and activity of N-fixing microbes.
We investigated the effects of warming on asymbiotic components of N fixation at a field warming experiment in Puerto Rico. We analyzed the function and composition of bacterial communities from surface soil and leaf litter samples.
Warming significantly increased asymbiotic N-fixation rates in soil by 55% (to 0.002 kg …
