To combat the growing issue of petroleum plastic waste, alternative bio-based polymers are being developed. Many of these biopolymers are made from bio-derived materials, or are biodegradable, but the most promising polymers fall in both categories. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are one such class of polymers, and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB), the most popular PHA, has shown great potential. This study utilized two types of cotton-derived glucose, alongside commercial glucose, as a feedstock for the biosynthesis of P3HB by Cupriavidus necator (also known as Ralstonia eutropha). The fermentation took place in a 2-L bioreactor, showing potential for scale-up. A single-solvent extraction method was …

BACKGROUND: Limited treatment options exist for infrapopliteal disease in patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI), a condition associated with a high risk of limb loss. Interventional management of diseased infrapopliteal vessels with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) is associated with high rates of restenosis and reintervention. In the LIFE-BTK randomized controlled trial (Pivotal Investigation of Safety and Efficacy of BRS Treatment-Below the Knee), the drug-eluting resorbable scaffold (DRS) demonstrated superior 12-month efficacy compared with PTA in a selected CLTI population with predominantly noncomplex, mildly to moderately calcified lesions. This report presents the 2-year safety and efficacy outcomes of the Esprit BTK …

Insights From A Simple Mathematical Model Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Charles F. Babbs
Insights From A Simple Mathematical Model Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
This preliminary report explores insights about mechanisms of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) gained from a mathematical model of interconnected clusters of excitatory neurons. This local, integrate-and-fire, spiking neural network is subjected to random noise from other populations of excitatory and inhibitory neurons outside the network. Its emergent behavior in response to different ratios of inhibitory to excitatory noise mimics several aspects of ASDs. The spiking neural network functions according to rules of classical neurophysiology, involving resting membrane potential, threshold potential, excitatory or inhibitory post-synaptic potentials, action potential, and refractory period. Key parameters include the incremental change in membrane potential, p …

Background: Genetic ancestry is an important factor to account for in DNA methylation studies because genetic variation influences DNA methylation patterns. One approach uses principal components (PCs) calculated from CpG sites that overlap with common SNPs to adjust for ancestry when genotyping data is not available. However, this method does not remove technical and biological variations, such as sex and age, prior to calculating the PCs. The first PC is therefore often associated with factors other than ancestry.
Methods: We developed and adapted the adapted EpiAnceR+ approach, which includes (1) residualizing the CpG data overlapping with common SNPs for control …
Current Insights On Predicting Vestibular Diseases Using Machine Learning, Emre Söylemez, Muhammed Mustafa Şeker
Current Insights On Predicting Vestibular Diseases Using Machine Learning, Emre Söylemez, Muhammed Mustafa Şeker
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The vestibular system is one of the three main systems responsible for maintaining balance and posture. Accurate vestibular inputs enable the perception of the head’s position and movement in space, and ensure coordination between head movements, eye movements, balance, and posture. Any dysfunction in the peripheral vestibular end organs, the vestibular nerve, or the central vestibular system may lead to vertigo, dizziness, and gait disturbances in individuals. Some syndromes that cause vertigo symptoms can be life threatening. Although peripheral vestibular pathologies are generally benign, they can reduce patients’ quality of life, cause falls, and hinder independence. Therefore, the diagnosis and …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: The immune system functions as a well-coordinated defense mechanism, protecting the host from both external pathogens and internal threats. Cancer cells often display surface antigens that the immune system can recognize as foreign, potentially triggering an immune response. However, many cancer cells evade detection by downregulating or completely losing these surface antigens. The immune system relies on the expression of surface antigens and human leukocyte antigens (HLA) to identify and target tumor cells. One key method by which tumor cells evade natural killer (NK) cells involves alterations in HLA antigens. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is known to cause various changes …
