Rbm39 Contributes To Mgmt Maintenance In Response To Temozolomide-Induced Dna Damage, Vahid Khalaj, Jack T Adams, Solmaz Aghaamiri, Servando Hernandez Vargas, Tyler M Bateman, Sukhen C Ghosh, Majid Momeny, Ali Azhdarinia

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

Resistance to alkylating chemotherapeutic agents such as temozolomide (TMZ) is a significant challenge in treating tumors with high MGMT expression, including MGMT-positive glioblastoma and neuroendocrine neoplasms. In this study, we investigated the effect of RNA-binding motif protein 39 (RBM39) downregulation on MGMT protein levels, based on prior observations suggesting an association between these two proteins. Pharmacological depletion or siRNA-mediated knockdown of RBM39 led to a marked reduction in MGMT protein levels in MGMT-expressing cancer cells. We further showed that dual targeting of RBM39 (using indisulam) and MGMT (with O6-benzylguanine) synergistically enhanced MGMT depletion. Functionally, combined indisulam and TMZ treatment significantly …

Integrins, cell-surface adhesion receptors involved in tumor progression, invasion, and metastasis, serve as crucial biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and therapeutic targeting. Multiplexed detection of integrins and cancer cell classification at the single-cell level allows for comprehensive profiling, facilitating precise identification and categorization of tumor cells that are heterogeneous in integrin expression and cell subtype. In this study, we developed a five-plex detection platform and demonstrated integrin profile for cancer cell classification leveraging surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with gap-enhanced gold nanorods (GENRs) in conjunction with advanced computational analysis. Specifically, we synthesized GENRs bearing five distinct Raman nanotags, each producing a unique …

Publications and Research

Ferula violacea Korovin, an endemic Tajikistani plant with purported medicinal properties, remains understudied. This study employs untargeted metabolomics to characterize the metabolite profiles of ethanol extracts and juices from F. violacea roots and seeds. In total, 540 distinct metabolites are putatively identified, 419 of which are previously unreported in the Ferula genus, representing a substantial expansion of its known chemical diversity. The most abundant metabolites are terpenoids, amino acid derivatives, and alkaloids. A particularly abundant group of daucane sesquiterpenoids, sharing a common (6-methyl-azulen-4-yl) cyclohexanecarboxylate substructure, is identified, including known metabolites such as ferutidin and ferutinin. Comparative analysis reveals organ-specific metabolic …

BACKGROUND: Prior studies showed worse outcomes in obese inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, especially those related to hospitalizations, surgery, and steroid-free remission. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RAs) have demonstrated significant metabolic benefits for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity. Hence, GLP1-RAs may improve clinical outcomes in patients with IBD, especially those with obesity. The objective was to systematically evaluate the impact of GLP1-RAs on clinical outcomes in patients with IBD.

METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed using the databases PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library from inception to March 15, 2025. Studies reporting outcomes …

Native Bee Assemblages In Prescribed Fire-Managed Prairies: A Case Study From Arkansas, United States, Coleman Z. Little, Neelendra K. Joshi

Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Native bee communities in Arkansas remain poorly documented, particularly within fire-managed prairie ecosystems that provide critical habitat for pollinators. This study surveyed bee assemblages at two native prairie remnants in the Arkansas River Valley, one large (Cherokee Prairie Natural Area, CPNA) and one small urban fragment (Jewel Moore Nature Reserve, JMNR), both managed using prescribed fire. Using pan trapping, we recorded 599 individuals representing 96 species across 25 genera, including 49% singletons. Despite differences in size and landscape context, both prairies supported similarly rich bee communities per sample day, with JMNR and CPNA averaging 16.1 and 13.75 species, respectively. However, …

Background: Exposure to supraphysiologic oxygen concentrations, or hyperoxia, during neonatal cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has been associated with worse outcomes in single-center studies. We aimed to describe variation in oxygen exposure during CPB and determine if hyperoxia is associated with worse outcomes in a multicenter cohort of neonates undergoing cardiac surgery.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of neonates who underwent surgery with CPB between January 2021 and December 2022 at 29 centers. Primary outcomes were operative mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), which included CPR, extracorporeal support, stroke, and mortality. Logistic regression assessed the associations between median PaO2 during …

Environmental Modulation Of Jak3-Mediated Immune Dysregulation In Alopecia Areata, Rylee Davis Nov 2025

Environmental Modulation Of Jak3-Mediated Immune Dysregulation In Alopecia Areata, Rylee Davis

Sustainability Conference

Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by non-scarring hair loss resulting from T-cell–driven destruction of hair follicles. Central to this process is the dysregulation of Janus kinase 3 (JAK3), a non-receptor tyrosine kinase selectively expressed in hematopoietic cells that mediates γc cytokine receptor signaling. Aberrant JAK3 activity disrupts follicular immune privilege and amplifies pro-inflammatory cytokine cascades, sustaining a chronic autoimmune state. While genetic susceptibility contributes to JAK3 overactivation, converging evidence highlights a pivotal role for environmental exposures in modulating its expression and signaling dynamics. In this framework, we focus on urban air pollutants like particularly fine particulate matter, …

Marine Ornithology

The Fuegian Steamer Duck Tachyeres pteneres is endemic to the southern cone of South America. Though classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, it is categorized as Near Threatened by the Chilean Ministry of Environment. However, few studies have been conducted on this species, and large portions of its distribution remain unsurveyed. This lack of information hinders a full appreciation of the species' conservation status under the IUCN criteria. We therefore conducted extensive surveys along the southern coast of Chile. Between March 2021 and April 2023, we carried out visual censuses at …

Relationships Between Stable Isotopes And Mercury Contaminants In Feathers Of Black-Tailed Gull Larus Crassirostris, Yasuaki Niizuma Nov 2025

Relationships Between Stable Isotopes And Mercury Contaminants In Feathers Of Black-Tailed Gull Larus Crassirostris, Yasuaki Niizuma

Marine Ornithology

The feathers of seabirds are widely used as appropriate indicators for various aspects of avian ecology and toxicology. To reveal total mercury (Hg) concentrations and the connection to diet using stable isotope analysis in Black-tailed Gulls Larus crassirostris, feathers were collected from 10 carcasses from the breeding colony on Kabushima Island during the incubation period in 2020. Total Hg concentrations in primary remiges were found to decrease during the molt sequence. The innermost primaries (P1), the first to be replaced after breeding, had the highest Hg concentrations of all feathers (7.73 ± 2.37 μg/g dry weight). The concentration of Hg …

Seasonal And Spatial Patterns Of Avian Assemblages In The Eastern Taiwan Strait: Implications For Offshore Wind Farm Development, Mei-Ling Bai, Chia-Hsiang Huang, Yu-Yi Lien Nov 2025

Seasonal And Spatial Patterns Of Avian Assemblages In The Eastern Taiwan Strait: Implications For Offshore Wind Farm Development, Mei-Ling Bai, Chia-Hsiang Huang, Yu-Yi Lien

Marine Ornithology

The eastern Taiwan Strait, a region situated along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway and currently undergoing rapid offshore wind energy development, remains poorly studied with respect to its seabird assemblages. Through intensive vessel-based transect surveys conducted between 2014 and 2021, this study documented 22,187 birds from 105 species across 10 orders and 29 families. Migratory non-seabirds accounted for 55.2% of individuals and dominated the species richness, highlighting the region's importance for migratory pathways. Seabird density was relatively low, however, consistent with trends in other tropical regions, and this pattern may also reflect both environmental degradation and methodological differences in density estimation. …

Status Of The Least Storm Petrel Hydrobates Microsoma In Peru, Mauricio Ugarte Nov 2025

Status Of The Least Storm Petrel Hydrobates Microsoma In Peru, Mauricio Ugarte

Marine Ornithology

The occurrence of the Least Storm Petrel Hydrobates microsoma in Peru has been considered somewhat hypothetical by some authors, as its presence was previously supported only by sight records dating back to 1982. In this note, I confirm the presence of the species in Peru based on the re-examination of three specimens deposited in the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. I also provide a summary of the historical records of its occurrences in Peru. Least Storm Petrel should be considered an uncommon boreal migrant in Peruvian marine waters.

Marine Ornithology

This study presents the case of a White-chinned Petrel Procellaria aequinoctialis that was tagged as a fledgling in April 2023 in the Kerguelen Islands, southern Indian Ocean, and subsequently rescued on the southeast coast of Brazil in July 2024. Upon recovery, the petrel displayed symptoms of exhaustion, malnutrition, and anemia, highlighting the substantial energy demands associated with its extensive journey of over 10,000 km. Rehabilitation efforts were successful, resulting in the bird's release after a month of intensive care, which involved nutritional support and monitoring of its health parameters. This case highlights the importance of long-term coastal and marine monitoring …
