Gustatory Behaviors Of House Flies: Body Parts Used And Response To Bitter, R M Panchalie Bhagya Gunathunga
Gustatory Behaviors Of House Flies: Body Parts Used And Response To Bitter, R M Panchalie Bhagya Gunathunga
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Insects use multiple body parts, not just their mouth, to taste. Whether a particular body part has a taste function can be determined indirectly by examining the morphology or electrophysiological response of its sensilla (sense organs) or directly by the insects’ behavioral response. Understanding the taste system of insects allows development of better management strategies against pest insects and strategies to protect beneficial insects.House flies, Musca domestica L., are pests at livestock facilities. House fly numbers are controlled mainly by manure management and chemical controls. Toxic granular fly baits remain one of the most popular and effective forms of chemical …

A Daily Study Of Emotion Regulation Strategies And Stress Response, Maxwell J. Katsikas
A Daily Study Of Emotion Regulation Strategies And Stress Response, Maxwell J. Katsikas
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Emotion regulation is a critical mechanism in the study of many forms of psychopathology. It is widely believed that maladaptive emotion regulation strategies (e.g., emotional suppression) may contribute to the development and maintenance of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Conversely, engaging in adaptive emotion regulation strategies (e.g., cognitive reappraisal) is suggested to be a crucial mechanism of change in some forms of treatment for PTSD. Therefore, understanding how emotion regulation strategies modulate stress response is critical. Much of the prior literature on emotion regulation in PTSD is cross-sectional and, therefore, cannot examine momentary emotion regulation and its immediate sequelae. Hence, the …

The Hell Creek Formation of the Northern Great Plains records one of the greatest mass extinction events in Earth’s history, bringing to a close the reign of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period. This rock unit comprises one of the most studied geological formations in the world and is one of the few locations on the planet that preserve terrestrial deposits containing ejecta from the bolide impact that slammed into the Yucatan Peninsula 66 million years ago. This profound event in the geologic record has led to numerous studies of paleobiotas, climate change, ecosystem recovery dynamics, and …
Maternal And Child Anxiety Symptoms: A Longitudinal Examination Of Parent-Related Indirect Pathways During Covid-19, Karamveer Kaur
Maternal And Child Anxiety Symptoms: A Longitudinal Examination Of Parent-Related Indirect Pathways During Covid-19, Karamveer Kaur
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The present study contributes to the current literature by examining specific parenting pathways (i.e., maternal hostility, overreactivity, laxness, warmth) that may be contributing to the transmission risk of anxiety symptoms from parent to child. Additionally, understanding these pathways during a context of high stress created by the COVID-19 pandemic may be particularly informative. Further, additional analysis explored the reverse direction, examining how child anxiety symptoms might influence parenting behaviors, providing a view of the bidirectional relationship between parent and child anxiety within the context of high stress. The survey data for this study were collected from a longitudinal study titled …
A Comparison Of Two Motivational Tasks In Male And Female Rats Under Acute Stress, Stephanie M. Muscott
A Comparison Of Two Motivational Tasks In Male And Female Rats Under Acute Stress, Stephanie M. Muscott
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Motivation is a complex concept that contributes to or is embedded within many different behaviors. As such, it can be difficult to assess motivation directly, but many researchers have attempted to measure motivation to understand its role in behavior and in diseases associated with a dysregulation of motivation, such as drug addiction or depression. To better understand motivation, behavioral tests frequently use palatable foods to measure motivation as defined by the amount of effort a rat will demonstrate to achieve the reward. Much of research has focused on highly controlled experimental settings, such as lever pressing in an operant box …
The Role Of Disgust In Contamination-Related Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms, Jonathan A. Teller
The Role Of Disgust In Contamination-Related Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms, Jonathan A. Teller
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Disgust has been identified as a primary emotion potentially involved in the development and maintenance of contamination-related obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. Research suggests that disgust comprises two distinct components: disgust propensity (DP; tendency or predisposition to experience disgust across situations) and disgust sensitivity (DS; the intensity of disgust experiences and their negative evaluation). Although both DP and DS have been linked to contamination-related OC symptoms, most studies have examined them separately or relied solely on self-report measures. The present study examined whether DP and DS uniquely predict both in-vivo disgust experiences and behavioral approach during a behavioral approach task (BAT). Undergraduate …
Alternative Mechanisms For The Control Of House Flies, Elizabeth Taylor
Alternative Mechanisms For The Control Of House Flies, Elizabeth Taylor
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines three alternative mechanisms for the control of house flies, Musca domestica L., a cosmopolitan filth fly pest common in agricultural and urban areas where decaying organic matter is available for larval development. Adult M. domestica are nuisances and vectors of disease. When sanitation, screens, and sticky fly strips fail to control house fly populations, insecticide baits are often used. However, the use of baits can lead to the evolution of resistance, including not only physiological resistance to the toxicant but also behavioral resistance to the phagostimulant and to the toxicant. This evolution of resistance to phagostimulants and …
The Impacts Of Trust In The Time Of Covid-19, Hannah Temes
The Impacts Of Trust In The Time Of Covid-19, Hannah Temes
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Over 350,000 Americans died from COVID-19 in 2020, the first year of the pandemic. Federal health institutions such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Human Health Services (DHHS) established guidelines for the public to follow during the pandemic. However, trust in these institutions varied resulting in differing public response —some followed the COVID protocols while others did not. It has been argued that when someone’s self-interest is at risk, they need to trust the government to take care of them. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when public health and self-interest were intertwined, …

The process of utilizing a static magnetic field to fabricate a nanomaterial-based composite via a stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing process is still a relatively new approach within the field of additive manufacturing. By using this magnetic field during the 3D printing process, both material and mechanical properties can be oriented and axially varied for enhanced characteristics. In this investigation, between 0% to 2% volume fractions of high aspect ratio, graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) are suspended within UV-curable resin during a SLA 3D printing process with a static magnetic field applied. The objective of this investigation is to determine the effect of …
Romantic Relationship Quality, Coparenting, And Parenting: An Actor Partner Interdependence Mediation Model, Jill Caradec
Romantic Relationship Quality, Coparenting, And Parenting: An Actor Partner Interdependence Mediation Model, Jill Caradec
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Family systems theory indicates there is interdependence between family subsystems. Indeed, previous research has found associations between romantic relationship quality, coparenting, and parenting. However, few have actually accounted for the interdependence of mothers and fathers and these constructs. Even fewer have considered how coparenting may serve as an indirect pathway between romantic relationship quality and parenting behaviors. The aim of the current study was to fill these gaps in the literature by utilizing an actor-partner interdependence mediation model. Specifically, mothers’ and fathers’ perception of the coparenting relationship was tested within one model as indirect paths for the actor and partner …

Demographic Response Of Breeding Grassland Birds To Keystone Effects Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs, Richard Andrew Dreelin
Demographic Response Of Breeding Grassland Birds To Keystone Effects Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs, Richard Andrew Dreelin
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Grassland birds are the most rapidly declining group of birds in North America due to a host of historical and recent changes to the Great Plains (Rosenberg et al., 2019; Bernath-Plaisted et al., 2023). Grassland birds evolved in a mosaic of heterogeneous habitats created by disturbance from keystone species and Indigenous peoples, and the suppression of disturbance by European settlement has resulted in more homogenous habitat and population declines in grassland birds (Knopf, 1994; Samson & Knopf, 1996; Vickery, Peter D. et al., 1998). Restoring the historical disturbance patterns and habitat heterogeneity forms the basis of management activities for grassland …

Improving Reduced Tillage Vegetable Systems For The Northern Great Plains: How Does Early Season Soil Tarping (Solarization And Occultation) Reduce Weeds, Affect Soil Health, And Protect Yield?, Hannah Voye
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Soil tarping (solarization and occultation) is a no-till weed management practice gaining popularity in the United States for small scale vegetable growers. While many studies have been conducted using variations of this tool in the Northeast United States, minimal research has been done in the windier, sunnier, Midwest climate. Our research explored the effectiveness of early spring solarization and occultation to manage weeds and produce viable onion yield in Eastern South Dakota. Occultation tarps placed in early spring included double sided black and white silage tarps with tarps placed black side up or white side up, each placed 6-, 4-, …
Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma In Children And Adolescents, Eric J. Lowe, Wilhelm Woessmann
Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma In Children And Adolescents, Eric J. Lowe, Wilhelm Woessmann
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Publications
Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) accounts for >95% of ALCL cases in children and adolescents. The first description of ALCL as a CD30-positive lymphoma in 1985 was followed by the detection of chromosomal translocations involving the ALK gene at chromosome 2p23. The pathogenesis of ALK-positive ALCL is based on signalling from the constitutive active ALK kinase. The clinical characteristics, therapy regimens and outcome data were reported in the 1990s and 2000s. Different chemotherapy regimens led to astonishingly similar long-term event-free survival rates of 70%, independent of the drugs, doses and duration of therapy. Additionally, patients with relapsed …
Mechanisms For Including Publics In Administrative Governance, Nina-Simone Edwards
Mechanisms For Including Publics In Administrative Governance, Nina-Simone Edwards
Library Scholarship
This project’s fourth concept paper rethinks public participation in administrative processes. Although participation mechanisms are theoretically designed to enable those affected by regulations to influence their development, it is often extremely difficult for members of the public to meaningfully engage with agencies. After discussing institutional failures of current participation mechanisms, this report develops a set of principles to guide the redesign of public participation mechanisms. These include involving publics earlier in the process, building both public and regulatory capacity for meaningful, two-way communication, and reframing expertise as a public good.
The paper then proposes specific mechanisms to optimize communication between …

Multimodal Approach In Distinguishing And Managing Uterine Arteriovenous Malformation: A Case Report, Sajeev Sridhar, Roman Sukhovershin, John A Hancock
The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine
Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are abnormal vascular connections bypassing the capillary system, categorized as acquired or congenital. Acquired uterine AVMs, often resulting from uterine trauma due to procedures like dilatation and curettage, can be life threatening, necessitating prompt diagnosis and management. Here we present a 34-year-old woman with a history of missed abortion and dilatation and curettage presenting with abnormal uterine bleeding 2 months postprocedure. Although initial transvaginal ultrasound suggested retained products of conception, several modalities were required to accurately diagnose uterine AVM with invasive angiography revealing the culprit vessel. Multimodal imaging approaches are crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment. This …

Mechanisms And Environmental Factors Shaping The Ecosystem Of Brain Macrophages, Silvia Penati, Simone Brioschi, Zhangying Cai, Claudia Z Han, Marco Colonna
The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine
Brain macrophages encompass two major populations: microglia in the parenchyma and border-associated macrophages (BAMs) in the extra-parenchymal compartments. These cells play crucial roles in maintaining brain homeostasis and immune surveillance. Microglia and BAMs are phenotypically and epigenetically distinct and exhibit highly specialized functions tailored to their environmental niches. Intriguingly, recent studies have shown that both microglia and BAMs originate from the same myeloid progenitor during yolk sac hematopoiesis, but their developmental fates diverge within the brain. Several works have partially unveiled the mechanisms orchestrating the development of microglia and BAMs in both mice and humans; however, many questions remain unanswered. …

Conspecific Killing And Cannibalism By A Free-Ranging Northern Short-Tailed Shrew (Blarina Brevicauda), Brent Graves, Suzanne M. Petschke
Journal Articles
Blarina brevicauda (Northern Short-tailed Shrew) are commonly characterized as solitary, aggressive to the point of killing conspecifics, and cannibalistic. Other reports of social interactions suggest that they get along quite amiably with conspecifics. However, virtually all such reports are based on observations of captive animals in enclosures. We report observations indicating that a free-ranging Short-tailed Shrew attacked and killed a conspecific, dragged the dead conspecific to a burrow in a snow bank, and consumed the conspecific.

Pre-Programmable Directional Stiffness In Continuum Robotic Arms: Effects Of Truss Configurations, Mostafa Abdelaziz, Zahy Elgendy, Mahmoud Magdy
Mechanical Engineering
This paper investigates the implementation of trussed designs in modular tendon-driven continuum arms (CAs) to address stiffness and stability limitations while maintaining adaptability. Various truss configurations— Single-Level, Combined-Level, and Alternated trusses—were analyzed using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate their impact on flexural and axial stiffness under realistic loading conditions. Results demonstrate that truss placement significantly influences performance, with bottom-level trusses improving flexural stiffness by up to 33%, middle-level trusses enhancing axial stiffness by 43%. Further, Combined-Level configurations provide superior overall stiffness, with MiddleBottom trusses achieving a 66.5% improvement in flexural stiffness and a 70.9% increase in axial stiffness, while …
