Mangroves and other blue carbon ecosystems are important for climate through the storage and sequestration of carbon. Most research estimates carbon dynamics by subsampling central portions of the ecosystem and are then upscales using habitat maps to patch, landscape, or regional levels. However, heterogeneity is rarely accounted for - particularly at edges. Further, adjacent tidal flat ecosystems have only recently been considered for carbon storage, but may be undervalued if areas where they transition with vegetated systems are not accounted for. To address the lack of information at coastal ecotones, we examined both soil carbon storage and carbon dioxide flux …
Addressing The Unmet Mental Health Crisis Of Youth In West Englewood, Joallyn Porter
Addressing The Unmet Mental Health Crisis Of Youth In West Englewood, Joallyn Porter
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Chicago youth face significant unmet mental health needs driven by systemic inequalities, community violence, poverty and limited access to care. Alarmingly high rates of anxiety, depression, and trauma impact youth across the city, particularly neighborhoods on the south and west sides, yet far too frequently, stigma, lack of culturally responsive services, and insufficient school and community resources prevent early intervention and effective mental health treatments. Schools, often the first point of contact for mental health support; lack the staffing, funding, and infrastructure necessary to meet growing demands—particularly in under-resourced neighborhoods where families encounter economic and logistical barriers to care. Addressing …

As historic drought conditions become more common in western North America, Late Quaternary hydroclimate records become vital for putting present anthropogenic conditions into a longer-term context. Here, we establish a high-resolution record of drought for the eastern Sierra Nevada (California) using lacustrine carbonates from well-dated sediment cores. We used oxygen and carbon stable-isotope ratios, combined with high-resolution scanning X-ray fluorescence counts of calcium (Ca) and titanium (Ti), to reconstruct the drought record over the last 4600 years in June Lake. We found elevated δ18O and δ13C carbonate isotope values coinciding with peaks in both total inorganic …

An Artificial Intelligence Model For Predicting Hospital Readmission Using Electronic Health Records Data, Rezarta Cara, Klodian Dhoska, Fjona Cara, Fredrick Kayusi, Linety Juma
Mesopotamian Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
This study investigates the application of a machine learning model—specifically the Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM)—to predict 30-day hospital readmissions using structured electronic health record (EHR) data. Hospital readmissions remain a critical challenge in healthcare systems, often indicating gaps in continuity of care and contributing to higher costs. By leveraging demographic, clinical, and diagnostic variables from 350 anonymized patient records, the model aimed to accurately identify individuals at high risk of readmission. Key features included age, number of previous admissions, length of stay, number of medications, chronic disease status, and gender. Data preprocessing, model training, and evaluation were conducted using …
Technological Readiness Versus Disruption: A Framework For Assessing Distinct Artificial Intelligence Policy Strategies, Orly Lobel
Emory Law Journal
Artificial intelligence (“AI”) is here and rapidly advancing. As the 2024 Thrower Symposium of the Emory Law Journal demonstrated, developments in the integration of AI to all aspects of life raise fundamental challenges for legal scholars and policymakers about the desirability and legitimacy of algorithmic decision-making, the societal impact of automation, and the liability, ownership, and regulatory puzzles created by substituting human actions with AI systems. This Article provides a framework for analyzing the readiness and desirability of contemporary technological innovation while continuing to address the effects and impact of technological shifts on the labor market, social welfare, and democracy. …

The Globalization Of Copyright Exceptions For Ai Training, Matthew Sag, Peter K. Yu
Emory Law Journal
Generative AI, machine learning, and other computational uses of copyrighted works pose profound conceptual questions for copyright law. This Article surveys multiple countries with different legal traditions and local conditions to explore how they have responded to these questions in relation to the use of copyrighted works for AI training without express permission from the relevant rightsholders. Our survey suggests an emerging international equilibrium in which jurisdictions from around the world have found ways to reconcile copyright law and AI training. In this equilibrium, countries recognize that text and data mining, computational data analysis, and AI training can be socially …

More sustainable agricultural methods are needed to alleviate the decreases in biodiversity and ecosystem services that have occurred because of industrial agriculture. One such method is the inclusion of alternative crops into croplands that can support biodiversity, reduce erosion and chemical runoff, and sequester carbon in the soil. However, the question of where such crops should be planted to balance competing economic and environmental objectives remains open. To this end, we develop a mixed-integer quadratically constrained program to optimize the layout of a cropland considering economic, biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions, and water quality objectives. We include spatially varying fertilization as …

Diapause is a programmed developmental arrest that can occur at any developmental stage depending on species, but the mechanisms that underscore embryonic diapause are poorly understood. Here, we identified molecular mechanisms underscoring distinct phases of diapause in the Diabrotica spp. complex. This species complex in- cludes economically significant agricultural pests, notably the western corn rootworm (WCR) and northern corn rootworm (NCR), which cause major losses in maize production. Rootworms undergo an obligate embryonic diapause to synchronize their life cycles with host plants, and we sequenced transcriptomes from both species at five time points (pre-diapause, diapause initiation, diapause maintenance, diapause termination, …
The Impact Of Medicaid Postpartum Coverage Expansion On Insurance Coverage In California, Akuoma Nwannunu
The Impact Of Medicaid Postpartum Coverage Expansion On Insurance Coverage In California, Akuoma Nwannunu
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
This study examines the impact of California’s 12-month Medicaid postpartum expansion on insurance coverage outcomes among recent mothers using pooled data from the American Community Survey (ACS) microdata from 2018-2019 and 2022-2023. A quasi-experimental difference-in-differences design compared postpartum mothers with non-postpartum mothers to assess whether the policy altered Medicaid enrollment, private coverage, or uninsurance in the first two years after implementation. Findings show that Medicaid coverage increased slightly and uninsurance declined modestly among postpartum mothers, while private coverage remained stable. Across all three outcomes, however, the DID estimates were small and statistically insignificant, which indicates early but limited measurable effects. …
Conservative Family Values As Constitutional Law: Private Regulation And The Erosion Of Fundamental Rights, Spera, Clara, Fleming, Katherine
Conservative Family Values As Constitutional Law: Private Regulation And The Erosion Of Fundamental Rights, Spera, Clara, Fleming, Katherine
Santa Clara Law Review
This Article examines a paradox in contemporary constitutional law: While constitutional rights traditionally protect minorities against majority preferences, the Supreme Court has increasingly enabled certain private actors to override others’ constitutionally protected family formation choices through what this Article calls “private regulation.” The Court’s decisions allow individual private actors to impose traditional religious and moral views on others who do not share those beliefs, while simultaneously embedding those very views in constitutional jurisprudence. This dual approach creates a troubling inversion. Instead of constitutional rights serving their traditional function of protecting minorities from majority overreach, they are being used to empower …

Integrating multi-omics data may help researchers understand the genetic underpinnings of complex traits and diseases. However, the best ways to integrate multi-omics data and use them to address pressing scientific questions remain a challenge. One important and topical problem is how to assess the aggregate effect of multiple genomic data types (e.g. genotypes and gene expression levels) on a phenotype, particularly while accommodating routine issues, such as having related subjects' data in analyses. In this paper, we extend an existing composite kernel machine regression model to integrate two multi-omics data types, while accommodating for general correlation structures amongst outcomes. Due …

All Red Inside: Embodied Metaphor In Clive Barker's Books Of Blood, Ian Vargas
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The collection Books of Blood is an anthology series of short stories written between 1984 and 1985. Only two, the very first and last, have any unifying story. For our purposes we will be looking at stories in particular that exemplify the themes I am speaking about. Barker's writing often heavily focuses on the ways that the body stands outside the control of the individual, something that a person resides in and must always rely upon, but is not actually in their control in most senses. His horror explores the ways in which the human body is both the first …
Comparison Of The Division And Fairness Of Household Labor Between The 1980s And Early 2000s, Madeline Rose Provins
Comparison Of The Division And Fairness Of Household Labor Between The 1980s And Early 2000s, Madeline Rose Provins
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The purpose of this thesis is to examine change in the gendered division of household labor between the 1980s and early 2000s. The division of household labor has historically been inequitable reflecting parallel social hierarchies, power imbalances, and systemic inequalities outside the home.
I used a cohort sample of 1,157 respondents combined from the 1988 Wave 1 of the National Survey of Family and Households (NSFH) and the 2003 Wave 3 to test four hypotheses related to gender and household labor. I found that between 1988 and 2003, the gender gap closed in mean hours a week devoted to indoor …
Campesino World-Building: Stories Of Migration, Memory, And Care In The Tension Of The Colonial Frame, Chelsea Ríos Gómez
Campesino World-Building: Stories Of Migration, Memory, And Care In The Tension Of The Colonial Frame, Chelsea Ríos Gómez
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Campesinos, often reduced to the label of “farmworkers”, are too often seen only through the lens of their labor within profit-driven systems. This thesis disrupts that limited narrative by illuminating the rich, expansive nature of vivencias campesinas, ways of being that transcend capitalist measures of value. These vivencias are lived, embodied experiences rooted in campesino lifeways, encompassing cultural, spiritual, and relational practices that nurture and sustain life.
My research is guided by four central questions: (1) In what ways have campesinos in pixley resisted exploitative labor systems, and how can this resistance be understood as a form of care labor? …
An Economic And Production Analysis Of Seaweed Farms In California And The Pacific Northwest, Brian Donovan
An Economic And Production Analysis Of Seaweed Farms In California And The Pacific Northwest, Brian Donovan
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Since the early 2010s, the seaweed aquaculture industry has steadily expanded in the United States, with states like Alaska, Maine, Hawaii, and Connecticut leading the way in the development of this emerging sector. However, information gaps remain concerning certain aspects of the domestic seaweed aquaculture industry. The purpose of this study was to examine the status of the seaweed aquaculture industry along the West Coast of the United States; specifically in the states of California, Oregon, and Washington. Seaweed farmers in these states were invited to voluntarily complete surveys asking important production, economic, and commercial questions regarding their operations. Data …
The Menstrual Cycle, Dual-Hormone Hypothesis, And Competition: Implications For Athletic Performance, Camille Burns
The Menstrual Cycle, Dual-Hormone Hypothesis, And Competition: Implications For Athletic Performance, Camille Burns
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Female athletes perceive that the fluctuating hormones of the menstrual cycle affect their performance. However, research on objective performance is inconclusive, partly due to a lack of studies conducted in real-world competitive contexts. Testosterone is often seen to be elevated near ovulation and is related to social competitiveness. Under the dual-hormone hypothesis, testosterone only predicts competitive behavior when cortisol is low. The current study had two goals: (1) to test whether the dual-hormone hypothesis applied to competitive drive and objective athletic performance, and (2) to examine whether competitiveness and the intensity of one’s response to competition varied across the menstrual …
Just Keep Swimming: Outmigration Survival Of Upper Klamath Basin Juvenile Chinook Salmon, James M. Whelan
Just Keep Swimming: Outmigration Survival Of Upper Klamath Basin Juvenile Chinook Salmon, James M. Whelan
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The removal of four impassable hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River provides salmonids with the opportunity to recolonize their historic range in the upper Klamath River watershed. However, successful reestablishment of salmon populations requires juvenile salmon born in Oregon's upper tributaries to safely migrate downstream through the river's upper reaches. This stretch of the Klamath River, immediately downstream of Upper Klamath Lake, presents multiple migration challenges, including two flow-control dams not scheduled for removal (Link River Dam and Keno Dam), significant water diversions, and water quality issues. To evaluate these challenges, I conducted experimental releases of radio-tagged juvenile Chinook salmon …

Exploring The Placebo Effect On The Cortisol Stress Response, Povheng Yam
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The placebo effect is well-studied on pain perception and is often observed to have a pain-reducing effect in patients. A few studies suggest that the placebo effect can influence physiological changes in people. To date, not many studies have examined the placebo effect on stress; thus, the current study explored the placebo effect on participants’ cortisol stress response and self-reported stress while undergoing a modified acute stress task, the Sing-a-Song Stress Test (SSST). The current study includes 44 participants (22 in the control group and 22 in the treatment group). A deceptive stress-reducing tincture (filled with water) was used as …

Factors Associated With The Biomass Of Yellowfin Tuna, Thunnus Albacares, At Fixed Fish Aggregating Devices (Fads) In The Galapagos Islands, Sarah Payton Moreau
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The Galapagos Marine Reserve was established in 1998 to protect biodiversity and reduce fishing pressure by only allowing artisanal fishing. Despite its small scale, artisanal fishing has impacted vulnerable, slow-growing species. As a result, managers are attempting to redirect fishing toward faster-growing, migratory species like yellowfin tuna. To support this shift, four fixed fish aggregating devices (FADs) were deployed in 2016 off Isabela, Floreana, and San Cristóbal islands. These anchored buoys were equipped with solar-powered sonars to estimate pelagic fish biomass, primarily yellowfin tuna, within the upper 100 meters of the water column. Although data was collected at four FADs, the analysis …

The sample was highly educated (1 associate, 5 bachelor’s, 3 master’s, and 2 doctoral degrees) and demonstrated strong internal consistency and response convergence across repeated measures. …
Cultivation Of Winged Kelp (Alaria Marginata) In Humboldt Bay, Evan C. Simpson
Cultivation Of Winged Kelp (Alaria Marginata) In Humboldt Bay, Evan C. Simpson
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The cultivation potential of the winged kelp (Alaria marginata) was evaluated in Humboldt Bay, California, to further develop sustainable aquaculture in the region. Seasonality, depth, and system design were evaluated in regard to harvest biomass and quality. Results suggested that single-longline configurations at shallow depths (< 2 m) produced greater total biomass than a multi-longline system, suggesting enhanced water flow and reduced self-shading improved growth. Kelp grew best with a winter outplanting period (December-April), most likely due to environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, nutrients, and salinity) being within the kelp’s tolerable range, with as much as 2.24 kg/meter of kelp being harvested. These findings demonstrate that while the estuarine system has more variable conditions than predicted, A. marginata can be successfully cultivated in Humboldt Bay and highlight its potential as a viable crop for northern California’s emerging seaweed industry. Future work targeting the optimization of single-longline design and deployment timing may further improve yield and support regional goals for sustainable aquaculture and food security.

A Porpoise-Driven Approach: Using Agent-Based Models To Predict Population Consequences Of Offshore Wind Noises On Gulf Of Maine Harbor Porpoises, Ben Greenberg Pridonoff
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Marine mammals are increasingly exposed to anthropogenic noises, including from offshore wind activities, necessitating the development and refinement of tools to predict the effects of noise on their populations. Agent-based models (ABMs) are an effective tool that can simulate realistic movements and behaviors of animals to quantify population consequences of disturbance. In this study, I used the Europe-based ABM ‘DEPONS’ to (1) evaluate its effectiveness in a new environment, the Gulf of Maine, USA/Bay of Fundy, Canada, and (2) develop estimates of the population dynamics of local harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) interacting with expected noises from proposed floating …

The winds of change appeared to blow on June 15, 2020, when the Supreme Court decided Bostock v. Clayton County. The Bostock decision - in which the Court held that discrimination based upon an employee's gender identity violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act - has been heralded as a revolutionary triumph for the LGBTQ+ community. And yet, while the Bostock decision dictated that employers cannot terminate people based on their gender identity, it failed in the most important regard: establishing gender identity as a protected constitutional class. The Court, however, is not unique in its failure to …

Roosting Habits Of Male Silver-Haired Bats In The Willard Creek Drainage Of Northeastern California, Alexander Christopher Lewis
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Silver-haired bats (Lasionycteris noctivagans) are one of the most widely distributed forest bats in North America. Although wildfires have been increasing across their range, how they respond to wildfire is understudied. Previous studies on silver-haired bats and fire focused on roosting behavior in low-severity controlled burns or used acoustics to understand activity levels post-wildfire. Quantifying how silver-haired bats use the physical structures created by high-severity wildfires and the landscape features in which they occur is critical in the face of rapidly shifting fire regimes. During the summer of 2023 and 2024 I radio-tracked male silver-haired bats to 37 roosts …
