Mutual Realm, Tyna Ontko Jan 2025

Mutual Realm, Tyna Ontko

Theses and Dissertations

mutual realm is a container for my many meandering thoughts on speculative futures, present-day-truth-telling, and the everyday construction of histories. Informed by systems of belief and power that humans have created to grapple with the unknown, the writing illustrates how storytelling builds worlds, assigning value to things by inscribing them with desire. In parts fact and fantasy, sculpture is considered as a form of sorting, making known the ways in which my experience of living between publics whose methods for demarcating boundaries, communally agreed upon superstitions, and algorithms for assigning meaning have marked my unconscious and affect my daily trajectories. …

Strange World, Brooklin Grantz Jan 2025

Strange World, Brooklin Grantz

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis work explores the intersections of masculine and feminine labors as they relate to the structure of domestic space. I utilize materials and processes akin to craft, construction and architecture, and domicile upkeep, noting what is shared between gendered and polarized fields while exploring uses of the grid in various instances as a structure to adhere to and antagonize: a binary. Highlighting the queerness and fluidity of materials and the similarities between seemingly disparate processes, I relate to the objects I make and alter through my own gender fluidity. I do not see masculinity or femininity as autonomous: the …

Imagine Being Free: Decolonizing Actor Training In University And Conservatory Programs, Hope R. Ward Jan 2025

Imagine Being Free: Decolonizing Actor Training In University And Conservatory Programs, Hope R. Ward

Theses and Dissertations

While blackface is considered the first proper form of American theater, I want to consider how the auction of enslaved Africans functioned as the original form of American theater. The auction block acted as a kind of interactive performance in which enslaved bodies were surveilled and evaluated as a kind of spectacle. In many ways, the auction block inaugurated White viewing practices of the Black body that reverberated in the day-to-day practices of slavery and subsequent visual media like the refashioning of blackface minstrel tropes within contemporary entertainment (plays, television, film). In Imagine Being Free: Decolonizing Actor Training in University …

Optimization Of Persulfate Activation System Using Ferrous Sulfate For Toc Removal From Real Domestic Wastewater, Mohamed Fouad, Mohamed Mossad, Mohamed Gar Alalm, Mahmoud Samy

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The reuse of treated wastewater is increasingly recognized as a sustainable solution to address global water shortage. This study investigates the effectiveness of a persulfate-based advanced oxidation process (AOP) using sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) activated by ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) as a tertiary treatment for secondary effluents. Real municipal wastewater was collected from Agouzain Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt. A Box Benkhen design (BBD) was employed to optimize three key variables: FeSO4 dose (0.5–2.0 g/L), Na2S2O8 dose (0.5–2.0 g/L), and pH (3.0–9.0), with total organic carbon (TOC) removal as the main response. Under optimized conditions (0.50 g/L FeSO4, 2.00 …

Supervisor Support And Job Satisfaction: The Mediating Roles Of Work-Life Balance And Perceived Employability With Gender As A Moderator, Tori Lomelino Jan 2025

Supervisor Support And Job Satisfaction: The Mediating Roles Of Work-Life Balance And Perceived Employability With Gender As A Moderator, Tori Lomelino

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the relationship between supervisor support and job satisfaction, offering work-life balance and perceived employability as key mechanisms through which this relationship occurs. It also explored gender differences in the relationship between work-life balance and job satisfaction, and perceived employability and job satisfaction. Participants were full-time employees in the U.S, recruited via Prolific, who completed an online survey. While supervisor support was found to have positively influenced job satisfaction through perceived employability, the role of work-life balance was less clear. Interaction effects including gender were not significant. This study highlights the significant role of perceived employability as a …

Journal Articles: Internal Medicine

Alcohol-induced organ damage is a major global health concern and a leading cause of disability and mortality. In addition to the liver, chronic alcohol consumption adversely affects multiple organ systems, including the cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems, the gastrointestinal tract, adipose tissue, kidneys, pancreas, and the brain. Organ damage begins with necrosis (cell death) followed by tissue injury, which triggers immune responses aimed at tissue repair. However, with continued heavy drinking, these reparative responses transition into inflammatory responses which exacerbate tissue injury and accelerate disease progression. Macroautophagy, commonly referred to as autophagy, is a vital and evolutionarily-conserved digestive process in eukaryotic …

Antibiotic Alternatives And Next-Generation Therapeutics For Salmonella Control: A One Health Approach To Combating Antimicrobial Resistance, Mohamed Saleh, Ashutosh Verma, Khaled A. Shaaban, Yosra A. Helmy

Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

The growing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance has significantly compromised the efficacy of conventional antibiotic-based interventions in controlling Salmonella infections across human and veterinary settings. This growing challenge necessitates a strategic rethinking of pathogen control, prompting the integration of next-generation therapeutics capable of disrupting Salmonella pathogenesis through novel, antibiotic-sparing mechanisms. In this context, a diverse array of emerging alternatives, including bacteriophages, antimicrobial peptides, probiotics, prebiotics, short-chain fatty acids, nanoparticles, and host-directed immunomodulators, have gained prominence as a promising frontier in non-antibiotic therapeutics. These modalities offer targeted approaches to inhibit Salmonella colonization, virulence expression, and persistence, while minimizing collateral damage to the …

A Large Electroencephalogram Database Of Freewill Reaching And Grasping Tasks For Brain Machine Interfaces, Bhoj Raj Thapa, John Boggess, Jihye Bae

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Brain machine interfaces (BMIs) offer great potential to improve the quality of life for individuals with neurological disorders or severe motor impairments. Among various neural recording modalities, electroencephalogram (EEG) is particularly favorable for BMIs due to its noninvasive nature, portability, and high temporal resolution. Existing EEG datasets for BMIs are often limited to experimental settings that fail to address subjects’ freewill in decision making. We present a large EEG dataset, containing a total of 6808 trials, recorded from 23 healthy young adults (eight females and 15 males with an age range from 18 to 24 years) while performing reaching and …

Is Nuclear Security An International Norm? A Constructivist Account Of How Nuclear Security Shapes State Behavior, Doan Linh Anh Jan 2025

Is Nuclear Security An International Norm? A Constructivist Account Of How Nuclear Security Shapes State Behavior, Doan Linh Anh

International Journal of Nuclear Security

Since 9/11, nuclear terrorism has been acknowledged to pose a serious threat to global security. In response to this threat, the United Nations Security Council, International Atomic Energy Agency, and nuclear-advanced states such as the US have worked together to develop a global nuclear security regime based on United Nations resolutions, legal conventions, and informal initiatives. However, this regime has been continuously criticized for lacking international standards or, more precisely, an independent nuclear security convention. Although this assertion no doubt holds in comparison with international agreements such as the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, nuclear security has made …

A Call For North Carolina To Allow Children To Express Their Wishes In Child Custody Proceedings, A Given Right Established In Binding Precedent, Katelynn Gallimore Jan 2025

A Call For North Carolina To Allow Children To Express Their Wishes In Child Custody Proceedings, A Given Right Established In Binding Precedent, Katelynn Gallimore

Campbell Law Review

The purpose of this Comment is to advocate for amending North Carolina’s child custody statute, N.C. Gen. Stat. section 50-13, to require the court to consider a child’s preference as to their custody arrangements to further align with legal precedent. This Comment illustrates the importance of allowing a child to express their wishes to determine the custodial arrangement that is in the best interests of that child. This Comment uses statutes from other states as guidance for proposing reform to the North Carolina General Assembly to consider and propose new legislation. In addition, the right of a child to express …

A Structural Perspective On Bacterial Transcription, Joshua John Brewer Jan 2025

A Structural Perspective On Bacterial Transcription, Joshua John Brewer

Student Theses and Dissertations

Transcription is a highly conserved process that lies at the very center of biology. As in the other two domains of the tree of life, bacterial transcription is a multistep process. In the first step, RNA polymerase (RNAP) contacts with the promoter DNA are established and then must be broken for the enzyme to transition into the elongation phase of RNA production; a process known as promoter escape. While single-molecule and biochemical observations report that promoter escape is a highly regulated and sometimes rate-limiting step in the transcription cycle, the structural details remain obscure. Promoter escape also serves as the …

Applying Machine Learning Methods To Generate Understandings Of Differential Item Functioning In A Flu Knowledge Assessment, William L. Romine, Tanvi Banerjee, Derrick Cox Jan 2025

Applying Machine Learning Methods To Generate Understandings Of Differential Item Functioning In A Flu Knowledge Assessment, William L. Romine, Tanvi Banerjee, Derrick Cox

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Current influenza trends, including the severity of the 2025 flu season and the prevalence of H5 bird flu in livestock, necessitate efforts to better understand how to educate students about its transmission. Although validated assessments of influenza knowledge exist, these have not been evaluated for affective and demographic biases. We explore differential item functioning (DIF) effects in four items focused on specific aspects of flu transmission derived from a validated influenza knowledge assessment. In doing so, we introduce and utilize a machine learning framework for exploration of DIF which offers greater flexibility than traditional statistical approaches in terms of studying …

Extraction Of Patient Subtypes Using Llm Generated Knowledge Graphs Integrated With A Transformer Architecture, Benjamin Holmes, Cogan Shimizu Jan 2025

Extraction Of Patient Subtypes Using Llm Generated Knowledge Graphs Integrated With A Transformer Architecture, Benjamin Holmes, Cogan Shimizu

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Extracting patient subpopulations (clinically relevant cohorts of individuals who share overlapping symptoms, risk factors, or diagnostic criteria) from unstructured medical notes is an ongoing challenge due to the variability of clinical language and the complex nature of patient conditions. We demonstrate a pipeline that combines named entity recognition (NER), transformer embeddings, guided dimensionality reduction, and LLM-mediated knowledge graph integration to enhance patient extraction. The approach begins with NER using the UMLS metathesaurus [1] to extract clinical terms, followed by transformation into vector embeddings using a biomedical transformer. These embeddings are augmented with structured knowledge graph representations generated through an LLM-driven …

In Harmony: The Environmental Lives Of Marianne North, Beatrix Farrand, And Mary Hunter Austin, Willa Frank Jan 2025

In Harmony: The Environmental Lives Of Marianne North, Beatrix Farrand, And Mary Hunter Austin, Willa Frank

Pomona Senior Theses

This thesis explores the lives and careers of botanical painter Marianne North, landscape architect Beatrix Farrand, and literary nature writer Mary Hunter Austin to examine the interplay of femininity and the representation of nature in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. All three figures had an approach to environmental representation which was based in field work, knowing a place truly, and a sense of harmony between subject and context of the produced work. This method did not occur because they were women or because it was an inherent feature of their assigned sex. Rather, their socialization in the Anglo-American …

A Comparative Analysis Of Data-Driven And Model-Based Neutrosophication Methods: Advancing True Neutrosophic Logic In Medical Data Transformation, Maikel Yelandi Leyva Vázquez, Lorenzo Cevallos-Torres, Omar Mar Cornelio, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2025

A Comparative Analysis Of Data-Driven And Model-Based Neutrosophication Methods: Advancing True Neutrosophic Logic In Medical Data Transformation, Maikel Yelandi Leyva Vázquez, Lorenzo Cevallos-Torres, Omar Mar Cornelio, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic logic extends fuzzy logic by explicitly modeling indeterminacy (I), offering a robust framework for uncertainty representation. The transformation of crisp data into neutrosophic triplets {T, I, F}—known as neutrosophication—is crucial for applying neutrosophic models in real-world analysis. However, comparative evaluations of existing neutrosophication methods remain limited. This study presents a systematic comparison of five approaches: three model-based methods (Parabolic, Threshold Distance, Fuzzy Membership), one density-based method (Kernel Density Estimation), and a proposed data-driven K-Means clustering method integrating sigmoid membership functions. Using a medical dataset of 299 patients and six continuous clinical variables, we assessed statistical behavior, consistency, and alignment …

Language, People, Classrooms, World: Blending Disparate Theories For United Language Education Practices, Masatoshi Sato, Steven L. Thorne, Marije Michel, Theodora Alexopoulou, John Hellermann

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

With a forward‐looking and problem‐solving mindset, this article aims to combine theoretical knowledge and empirical evidence from different schools of thought in the field of second language (L2) learning and teaching—namely, instructed second language acquisition, generative linguistics, and an ecological perspective that includes multiple frameworks. Acknowledging numerous fundamental differences in our theoretical and methodological perspectives on how to conduct research, we are united on two fronts: First, we believe that researchers with differing theoretical commitments can and should work together to advance L2 research. Second, differing theoretical beliefs are potentially of limited relevance to those who will implement our pedagogical …

Using Educational Intervention To Impact Provider And Nurse Knowledge And Self-Efficacy In Contingency Management At An Sud Clinic, Chinwe Egwudo Jan 2025

Using Educational Intervention To Impact Provider And Nurse Knowledge And Self-Efficacy In Contingency Management At An Sud Clinic, Chinwe Egwudo

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The US opioid epidemic crisis led to 700,000 deaths in 2019 alone. Poor adherence to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) strains individuals, families, and the healthcare systems, with rising relapses at the project site highlighting the need for evidence-based intervention. Studies show that contingency management (CM), a behavioral intervention that incentivizes desired behaviors, improves adherence to MOUD. Despite its effectiveness, CM remains underutilized in clinical settings due to healthcare providers’ lack of knowledge and self-efficacy. This project aimed to bridge the knowledge gap by implementing an educational intervention to impact healthcare providers’ knowledge and self-efficacy in applying CM protocols …

Hydrogen And Halogen Interactions With 2,6 Dimethoxypyridine, Margaret Manning Stucky Jan 2025

Hydrogen And Halogen Interactions With 2,6 Dimethoxypyridine, Margaret Manning Stucky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Raman spectroscopy and computational chemistry are used to explore the effects of non-covalent interactions with the nitrogen-containing building block 2,6-dimethoxypyridine. Previously, we have shown that hydrogen and halogen bonding with simple nitrogen containing heterocycles leads to partial charge transfer and evolving spectroscopic properties. Adding electron donating and withdrawing groups to azabenzenes should allow us then to tune these interactions. Here, 2,6-dimethoxypyridine (DMOP) with its two methoxy substituents offers an excellent opportunity to study the effect of electron withdrawal on spectroscopic observables. Unlike in previous studies, however, hydrogen bonding led to no discernable experimental spectroscopic changes in mixtures of DMOP and …

Giving And Receiving Social Support Among Individuals With Migraine, Lauren Thaxter Jan 2025

Giving And Receiving Social Support Among Individuals With Migraine, Lauren Thaxter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Migraine is among the most common and burdensome neurological disorders in the United States, significantly impairing daily functioning. Psychological variables such as depression, anxiety, stress, and fear of pain are known to exacerbate migraine experiences, while receiving social support has been broadly associated with improved health outcomes. Although giving and receiving social support are protective for physical and mental health, their specific influence on migraine outcomes remains underexplored. This study investigated experimentally whether giving social support increased pain tolerance and reduced pain intensity as measured using a cold pressor test among 117 individuals with migraine. This study also examined the …

Writing The Border Between Socialist Self And State: Christa Wolf's East German Autofiction, Emma Dinkelspiel

Slavic Studies Honors Papers

This thesis considers the life and work of Christa Wolf in order to examine her role in East Germany as a “loyal dissident.” Wolf was born in the German Third Reich in 1929, and the German Democratic Republic was founded in 1949 just as she entered adulthood. Also in 1949, Wolf joined the East German socialist party and dedicated herself to the socialist project. Through an exploration of the publication, contents, and translations of four of her major works (Moscow Novella, Divided Heaven, The Quest for Christa T., and Patterns of Childhood), I examine how …

Does Climate Disclosure Work To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions? Emerging Evidence Suggests Cautious Optimism, Cynthia A. Williams Jan 2025

Does Climate Disclosure Work To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions? Emerging Evidence Suggests Cautious Optimism, Cynthia A. Williams

Seattle University Law Review

Significant regulatory resources have been spent developing global, voluntary climate and sustainability disclosure standards, such as the TCFD, TNRD, and ISSB’s Sustainability and Climate Disclosure standards, or domestically required disclosures, such as in the EU and in the U.S. Thus, it is important to evaluate whether this disclosure, particularly voluntary, qualitative disclosure, will have the power to shift the allocation of capital, will have a significant effect on the management of climate risk within firms, and ultimately will reduce climate change risk and biodiversity loss.

In this Article, several interrelated questions will be discussed. First, what does the empirical evidence …

Social Justice, Practical Lawyering, And The Elephant In Solitary Confinement: Why Animal Law Belongs In The Legal Writing Classroom, Conley Wouters Jan 2025

Social Justice, Practical Lawyering, And The Elephant In Solitary Confinement: Why Animal Law Belongs In The Legal Writing Classroom, Conley Wouters

Animal Law Review

Animal law has grown exponentially since its genesis in the late 1970s. It is the subject of survey courses, seminars, clinics, and law reviews. But animal law per se has not made its way into the legal writing discipline, and its absence creates missed opportunities for legal writing instructors to improve our teaching and help our students develop critical lawyering skills. This Article argues that we should seize these opportunities and incorporate animal law into legal writing classes.

The Article begins by summarizing the argument and offering a gen-eral description of how legal writing professors and their students stand to …

Scientific Educations Among U.S. Judges, Christa J. Laser Jan 2025

Should more judges have technical and scientific educations than are currently prevalent in the federal judiciary? This empirical study of the educational background of federal judges reports the undergraduate and graduate majors of active U.S. federal Article III judges. Information on the subject area of study is largely not publicly available, especially for judges appointed decades ago. This is the first and only publicly available research study of the subject areas of study of U.S. judges, collected via phone and email surveys to U.S. judges. The results of this study show that only 7.35% of federal judges have majors in …

Best Kept Secret: The Hidden Health Costs Of Corporate Confidentiality, Cynthia M. Ho Jan 2025

Best Kept Secret: The Hidden Health Costs Of Corporate Confidentiality, Cynthia M. Ho

American University Law Review

Although patents are well known to negatively impact health when drugs are unaffordable, trade secrets also harm health, and in more ways than patents. Patented drugs harm public health simply by temporarily increasing prices on treatments. Trade secrets, on the other hand, can not only increase treatment costs, but also hide knowledge needed for effective medical treatment. Also, because patents, but not trade secrets, have a limited term, patent health harms clearly terminate while trade secret harms do not. Moreover, the public may not even be fully aware of all trade secret health harms because trade secret information is, by …

Punishing Violence, Shima Baradaran Baughman Jan 2025

Punishing Violence, Shima Baradaran Baughman

American University Law Review

The American criminal justice system doles out the harshest punishments in the world. It is infamous for its protracted criminal sentences and prodigious criminal code. But what most scholars and policymakers overlook is that the United States punishes only a fraction of the total serious crime that occurs in the country—including violent crime.

Approximately twenty million serious crimes occur in America each year, but only about half of these are reported to police. Of those reported, the police make arrests for an average of only twenty percent of serious crimes, and only ten percent of arrests result in a conviction. …
