Development Of Self-Healing Polymer From Bio-Based Benzoxazine Blend With Poly(Ethylene Glycol) For Anti-Biofouling Applications, Pharaporn Yodkum
Development Of Self-Healing Polymer From Bio-Based Benzoxazine Blend With Poly(Ethylene Glycol) For Anti-Biofouling Applications, Pharaporn Yodkum
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Biofouling remains a significant challenge in marine industries, as conventional coatings often lose their antifouling efficacy once they become damaged. Incorporating self-healing capabilities into antifouling coatings has therefore emerged as a promising strategy to extend service life and maintain long-term performance. In this study, self-healing polymers were developed based on a bio-derived benzoxazine resin (E-fa), synthesized from renewable precursors including eugenol (a phenol source), furfurylamine (an amine source), and paraformaldehyde, and subsequently blended with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The blends were formulated with varying weight ratios (95/5, 90/10, 85/15, and 80/20 wt/wt%) and PEG molecular weights (PEG-600, PEG-1500, and PEG-4000). This …
Comparative Analysis Of Gut Microbiota In Post-Mortem Chronic Alcoholics Versus Minimal To No Alcohol Users In The Thai Population, Laiba Pervez
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Chronic alcohol consumption induces long-term disruption of the gut microbiota, contributing to inflammation, metabolic imbalance, and impaired intestinal integrity. This study investigated 24 postmortem gut microbiota samples from the Thai population, including 12 chronic alcoholic and 12 non-alcoholic cadavers, focusing on cecal and fecal samples to identify site-specific microbial signatures of alcohol-associated dysbiosis. Following DNA extraction, the V3–V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene were sequenced on the Illumina MiSeq platform. Data were processed in QIIME for OTU clustering and taxonomic profiling. Alpha (Shannon, Chao1, ACE) and beta (Bray–Curtis) diversity were analyzed with PERMANOVA (p< 0.05) while LEfSe, cladogram, and STAMP analyses identified differentially abundant taxa.. At the phylum level, alcoholic cecal samples (AC) showed a decrease in Firmicutes (59.07%) and increases in Proteobacteria (5.54%), Fusobacteria (8.48%), and Actinobacteria (2.78%) compared with controls (NAC). The rise in Actinobacteria was statistically significant. The class Bacilli was also elevated, reflecting a more oxygenated and inflammatory intestinal environment. At the genus level, Paeniclostridium was enriched in alcoholics, while the butyrate-producing Coprococcus was reduced, suggesting impaired SCFA metabolism and gut barrier function. In fecal samples (AF vs NAF), phylum-level differences were minimal, although Clostridium sensu stricto 1 was notably higher in alcoholics, consistent with inflammation-associated dysbiosis. When comparing gut regions, distinct spatial heterogeneity was observed. Within the alcoholic group, Firmicutes were more abundant in cecum, while Actinobacteria were lower compared to feces. Among controls, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes were enriched in feces, whereas Firmicutes predominated in the cecum. Alpha diversity analysis using ACE and Chao1 indices showed significant differences between cecal and fecal samples of the control group. Overall, postmortem gut microbiota retained distinct alcoholassociated signatures, with the cecum preserving clearer microbial patterns than feces. These findings highlight the cecum’s potential as a reliable site for detecting alcohol-related dysbiosis in forensics.

The present study examined knowledge updating abilities in individuals with and without ADHD when forced to metacognitively evaluate the effectiveness of different study strategies. Participants with and without ADHD were randomly assigned to either a spontaneous or a forced knowledge updating condition, with those in the latter condition being asked to keep track of encoding strategy-recall outcome results, but no additional instructions for those in the spontaneous condition. I expected that healthy control participants would show greater knowledge updating abilities than those with ADHD, the participants in the forced knowledge updating condition would show greater knowledge updating abilities than participants …
Modifying The L-Tryptophan Affinity Of The Ribosomal Arrest Peptide Tnac, Alexis Orlando Delgado Castillo
Modifying The L-Tryptophan Affinity Of The Ribosomal Arrest Peptide Tnac, Alexis Orlando Delgado Castillo
Theses
Since creating biosensors from zero has proven a more challenging enterprise than expected, resorting into naturally occurring regulatory systems already characterized represents a more accurate, rapid, and attractive option. Various previous strategies have sought to exploit and modify regulatory elements that sense for different molecules, including monosaccharides (Tang et al., 2008), secondary metabolites (Flachbart et al., 2021), and other amino acids (Della Corte et al., 2020). This study aims to leverage current scientific knowledge and advances concerning the structure and function of the ribosomal arrest peptide TnaC. With this research I integrated the TnaC ribosome-arresting peptide into a new biosensor …

When tested on one year of historical data, …
Surveying Subterranean Biodiversity Of The Tongass National Forest Using Traditional Survey Approaches And Environmental Dna (Edna) Metabarcoding, Jared P. Higgs
Theses
The Tongass National Forest (TNF) is a large temperate rainforest in southeastern Alaska, much of which is underlain by karst. Timber harvest, among other threats, can have detrimental effects on karst habitats; however, the subterranean fauna of this region is understudied and lacks a baseline for monitoring. I spent three field seasons conducting biological assessments of caves in the TNF using two approaches: traditional specimen-based sampling and eDNA metabarcoding. To improve the reference sequence database, I generated 213 novel sequences from invertebrate specimens collected from 35 caves. I also collected 125 water samples from 39 sites for environmental DNA (eDNA) …

Rapid, deep and sustained reductions in carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions are essential to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement of keeping the long-term global average surface temperature increase well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C . In addition, the 2021 IPCC Report explains that carbon dioxide removal (CDR) will be needed to offset residual CO₂ emissions from activities and sectors that are difficult to decarbonize by 2050. The objective of CDR is removal of atmospheric CO2 from residual emissions and its durable storage in reservoirs, which is an additional critical element …
Investigating The Plasticity And Role Of Peripherally Derived Cd4 T Cells In The Brain At Homeostasis, Tomomi Marie Yoshida
Investigating The Plasticity And Role Of Peripherally Derived Cd4 T Cells In The Brain At Homeostasis, Tomomi Marie Yoshida
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Specialized immune cells residing in tissues orchestrate diverse biological functions through communication with parenchymal cells. The contribution of the innate immune compartment in the meninges and central nervous system (CNS) is well-characterized, however, whether T cells as part of the adaptive immune system reside in the brain and are involved in homeostasis is poorly understood. Here, we identify that the subfornical organ (SFO) region of the brain is a nucleus for parenchymal T cells in the steady-state brain in both mice and humans. Using unbiased transcriptomics, we found that these extravascular T cells in the mouse brain are distinct from …
Host Defense Inside & Outside Of The Immune System: Modeling Antimicrobial Immunity By Gbps, Zhongyu Yuan
Host Defense Inside & Outside Of The Immune System: Modeling Antimicrobial Immunity By Gbps, Zhongyu Yuan
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Traditional views of host defense often focus on antibody-mediated neutralization, cytotoxic T-cell plus NK-cell-mediated killing, and phagocytic activities by cell populations originating in the bone marrow as part of the classical immune system. Additional effector activities, however, also operate in non-immune cells which compose the stroma or parenchyma of host tissues. These latter cell populations often mobilize antimicrobial activities in response to cytokines such as type II IFN (IFN-gamma; IFN-) against a wide variety of intracellular pathogens.
Among the most prominent IFN--stimulated genes are a family of immune dynamin-like GTPases termed the Guanylate Binding Proteins (GBPs). GBPs are widely expressed …

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and allergic rhinitis (AR) are common comorbid sinonasal conditions. CRS is classically divided into two distinct phenotypes: CRS with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) and CRS without nasal polyposis (CRSsNP). The purpose of this retrospective observational study is to determine whether aeroallergen sensitization profiles in patients with comorbid CRS and AR can distinguish between CRSwNP and CRSsNP. A total of 241 patients diagnosed with comorbid CRS and AR who underwent skin prick testing or in vitro allergy testing in a single tertiary rhinology practice were included for evaluation. The rates of allergen-specific sensitizations in CRSwNP patients were compared with …
Liposomes As A Platform For Cd40 Ligand Presentation For The Purpose Of Feeder-Free B Cell Activation, Sydney Bone
Liposomes As A Platform For Cd40 Ligand Presentation For The Purpose Of Feeder-Free B Cell Activation, Sydney Bone
Theses
Improvement of in-vitro culture of immune cells is critical for expanding our understanding of the immune system and advancing the treatment of diseases, whether pathogenic, cancerous, or autoimmune, via cellular immunotherapies. This study aims to develop a feeder-free B cell culture system using biomaterials-based presentation of a critical signaling molecule, namely CD40 ligand (CD40L). Traditional B cell culture methods rely on allogenic feeder cells to present CD40L, but a culture of only autologous cells is preferable for cellular immunotherapies. Previous work of our lab established an effective feeder-free B cell culture system using magnetic microbeads as a synthetic platform for …
Factors Affecting Freshwater Fish Communities In Two North Alabama Counties, Joshua Fitts
Factors Affecting Freshwater Fish Communities In Two North Alabama Counties, Joshua Fitts
Theses
This study examined how physical habitat characteristics influence freshwater fish diversity in streams of Madison and Limestone Counties, Alabama. Ten 150-meter stream reaches were sampled using backpack electrofishing and seining, with habitat variables measured at fixed transects. Principal component analysis identified four main habitat gradients representing flow and substrate, channel size, gravel dominance, and canopy–bedrock conditions. Although overall species richness and Shannon diversity were not significantly related to these gradients, species-specific correlations revealed clear ecological preferences. Regression models showed that root wads, herbaceous vegetation, and riprap modestly increased richness, emphasizing the role of structural diversity. These findings highlight the importance …

Limited research has examined the possible synergistic interrelationships between serious bacterial infections (SBIs) of the heart (i.e., endocarditis), bone, spine, brain, or joints (e.g., osteomylelitis) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. We examined whether syndemic interactions existed between SBI, HCV, and substance-use-related factors in rural communities, hypothesizing that injection-mediated risks elevated the likelihood for both SBIs and HCV infections, which could be exacerbated by synergistic biological–biological or biological and social interactions. We calculated the prevalence ratios (PRs) of past-year SBI associated with each risk factor in separate models. Effect modification among significant risk factors was assessed using multiplicative interaction. Among …

Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HPV-positive HNSCC) has distinct biological characteristics from HPV-negative HNSCC. Using an AI-based analytical platform on meta cohorts, we profiled expression patterns of viral transcripts and HPV viral genome integration, and classified the tumor microenvironment (TME). Unsupervised clustering analysis revealed five distinct and novel TME subtypes across patients (immune-enriched, highly immune and B-cell enriched, fibrotic, immune-desert, and immune-enriched luminal). These TME subtypes were highly correlated with patient prognosis. In order to understand specific factors associated with prognosis, we used the unsupervised clustering of an HPV-positive HNSCC cohort from The Cancer Genome Atlas …

Machine learning algorithms are commonly employed for classification and interpretation of high-dimensional data. The classification task is often broken down into two separate procedures, and different methods are applied to achieve accurate results and produce interpretable outcomes. First, an effective subset of high-dimensional features must be extracted and then the selected subset will be used to train a classifier. Gradient Boosted Trees (GBT) is an ensemble model and, particularly due to their robustness, ability to model complex nonlinear interactions, and feature interpretability, they are well suited for complex applications. XGBoost (eXtreme Gradient Boosting) is a high-performance implementation of GBT that …

Examining The Effects Of Songbird Nest Boxes And Habitat On Avian And Arthropod Communities In A Vineyard Ecosystem, Eleanor Macdonald
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Agricultural expansion threatens biodiversity, but integrating insectivorous birds into vineyard ecosystems may support both conservation and ecosystem services. We tested how nest boxes and habitat composition influence avian and arthropod communities in Napa Valley vineyards using a before-after, control-impact experiment across 20 sites. During the 2023-2024 breeding seasons we conducted avian point counts, sampled key pest and beneficial arthropods, and collected fecal samples from adult and nestling tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) and western bluebirds (Sialia mexicana) to detect vineyard pest DNA. Nest boxes significantly increased swallow and bluebird abundance within one year; swallow responses were strongest …
