Single-Cell And Bulk Transcriptional Profiling Of Mouse Ovaries Reveals Novel Genes And Pathways Associated With Dna Damage Response In Oocytes., Monique Mills, Chihiro Emori, Parveen Kumar, Zachary Boucher, Joshy George, Ewelina Bolcun-Filas
Faculty Research 2025
Immature oocytes enclosed in primordial follicles stored in female ovaries are under constant threat of DNA damage induced by endogenous and exogenous factors. Checkpoint kinase 2 (CHEK2) is a key mediator of the DNA damage response (DDR) in all cells. Genetic studies have shown that CHEK2 and its downstream targets, p53, and TAp63, regulate primordial follicle elimination in response to DNA damage. However, the mechanism leading to their demise is still poorly characterized. Single-cell and bulk RNA sequencing were used to determine the DDR in wild-type and Chek2-deficient ovaries. A low but oocyte-lethal dose of ionizing radiation induces ovarian DDR …

Wild Horse Overpopulation- Consequences And Environmental Effects, Tessa M. Eslick Ms.
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
When considering wild horse overpopulation, there are many different facets of the issue that need to be addressed. Wild horse overpopulation is a significant issue across the American West, particularly on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management( BLM). The largest populations are often found in Nevada, other states include California, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming, Washington, and Arizona. Whether there are thousands of horses on many acres of land, or hundreds spread across smaller reservations or public lands, the effects of their overpopulation remain as imminent as ever. Overpopulation is causing ecological damage and strain on resources leading to concerns …

The Path To Zero Clabsis: The Benefits Of Central Line Care Teams, Supplemental Checklist, Increased Education And Utilizing Clabsi Bundles, Lauren A. Bondurant
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) result in a plethora of deaths each year and cost the U.S. healthcare system billions of dollars (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024). CLABSIs have been a type of bloodstream infection that has affected a plethora of individuals for years and one that does not discriminate patient type. Many articles were reviewed, but they all inferred that CLABSIs bundles, supplemental checklists, and central line care teams all showed the most significant data and resulted in the most decreased CLABSI rates. Upon assessment of the project unit, it was noted that the issue that most impacted …

Law enforcement is an emerging clinical setting for athletic trainers (ATs), yet little is known regarding law enforcement officers (LEOs) perceptions of the profession. This qualitative study following a general inductive approach explored LEOs' experiences with musculoskeletal injury and their interactions with ATs. Seven officers (N = 7) participated in one-on-one semi-structured interviews. Three themes emerged: (1) roles and responsibilities of ATs, (2) education and training, and (3) impact of injury on LEOs. While participants viewed ATs positively, they demonstrated limited understanding of the profession's scope and expertise. Participants commonly described managing musculoskeletal injuries on their own due to …

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
The Santa Ana Mountains are a coastal range on the border of Orange and Riverside counties in southern California. Ladd Canyon, covering 18.2 km2 in the Cleveland National Forest, is a botanical black hole relative to the rest of the Santa Ana Mountains because of limited access. It is dominated by chaparral and coastal sage scrub and includes significant knobcone pine (Pinus attenuata) stands and riparian woodland. Features that make it an intriguing area to study include the only serpentine soil in the Santa Ana Mountains, large tracts of habitat that have no recorded fire history, steep …

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
The California Floristic Province (CFP) is one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, known for high levels of plant endemism. The CFP extends from southwestern Oregon, through cismontane California, south to northwestern Baja California, Mexico. The flora of the California Floristic Province portion of Baja California (CFP Baja) has historically been poorly documented and understood. This study provides data to address this deficiency by inventorying and assessing the native flora of CFP Baja from a conservation perspective: evaluating the rarity, endangerment and endemism of its native taxa. A total of 2392 taxa were assessed to determine this listing of rare, endangered …

Thyroid carcinomas are driven by diverse molecular alterations, but the tumor suppressor gene folliculin (FLCN), best known for its role in Birt–Hogg–Dubé (BHD) syndrome, has received limited attention in thyroid tumors. Here, we describe two thyroid tumors with pathogenic FLCN alterations—one germline and one somatic—and analyze the broader prevalence and significance of FLCN in thyroid carcinomas using multiple large sequencing datasets, including ORIEN-AVATAR. Patient 1, with a germline FLCN mutation and a history of BHD syndrome, presented with a well-circumscribed oncocytic adenoma. Molecular testing confirmed biallelic FLCN inactivation, but no additional mutations or aggressive features were observed, and the patient …
Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors: Allosteric Structural Modulation And New Treatments For Anxiety Disorders, Madaniah O. Zakari
Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors: Allosteric Structural Modulation And New Treatments For Anxiety Disorders, Madaniah O. Zakari
Neurosciences
ABSTRACT Anxiety disorders are psychiatric ailments that affect people throughout the world. Several studies have revealed that the development of anxiety is affected by changes in glutamatergic neurotransmission. Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) can be allosterically modified, offering a new strategy for developing specific therapeutic agents that affect the cell membrane. Allosteric modulators have many advantages over other therapeutic options. In the field of stress treatment modulation, they can maintain the properties of natural glutamatergic neurotransmission. This review describes the design of allosteric modulators and the advantages of this class of compounds over current stress drugs.

"We Must Cultivate Our Garden" Interpreting Voltaire's Candide (1759), Aner Schuyler
"We Must Cultivate Our Garden" Interpreting Voltaire's Candide (1759), Aner Schuyler
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
Voltaire wrote Candide in 1759. This philosophical tale tells the story of a naïve and optimistic youth who travels the Old and New Worlds, encounters cruelty and atrocities everywhere, wonders how they fit into a world created and overseen by a benevolent God, and gradually becomes disabused with optimism and the world. At this time Voltaire's book was considered heretical by the French Monarchy and Catholic Church for speaking plainly and critically about world tragedies and injustices. Voltaire critiques the abuse of power, injustice, intolerance, oppression, and autocracies through satire and tragedy. This essay interprets the last line of Voltaire’s …

Peak Teaching: Exploring And Fostering Sacred Experiences In University Classrooms, Charles Burack
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Supporting the spiritual growth of college and university students with diverse backgrounds and orientations is both important and challenging. It is important not only because spirituality is a crucial dimension of human life but also because the majority of students at both private and public schools want their teachers to address spiritual issues in the classroom. A powerful way to address spirituality is to explore and foster sacred experiences in university classrooms. Sacred experiences include religious, spiritual, mystical, transcendent, numinous, and peak experiences as well as many other nonordinary experiences. The author offers guidance to educators on how to: 1) …
The Ivf Exception: Strengthening Free Exercise Challenges To Abortion Bans, Io Jones
The Ivf Exception: Strengthening Free Exercise Challenges To Abortion Bans, Io Jones
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
The fallout of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision has included two seemingly distinct but critically related dynamics. First, religiously motivated plaintiffs are filing lawsuits challenging abortion bans on free exercise grounds. These lawsuits argue, in accordance with current free exercise doctrine, that a state’s compelling interest in protecting “fetal life” is undermined by secular exceptions to abortion bans. Second, state lawmakers have been forced to confirm that their state abortion bans do not apply to in vitro fertilization (IVF), a fertility treatment that regularly requires the discarding of embryos. This confluence of factors raises a critical question …

Characterizing And Targeting The Non-Catalytic Functions Of Phosphatase Of Regenerating Liver 3 (Prl-3) In Oncogenesis And Cancer Progression, Jeffery T. Jolly
Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
Phosphatase of Regenerating Liver 3 (PRL-3) is frequently upregulated in various cancers and is associated with poor patient prognosis. Although traditionally studied for its phosphatase activity, PRL-3 also interacts with the CNNM family of magnesium transporters through its catalytic site, and these two functions are mutually exclusive at any given time. Most previous studies relied on a commonly used PRL-3 mutation that disrupts both phosphatase activity and CNNM binding, making it challenging to determine which function drives its oncogenic effects. To address this gap in the field, I utilized a panel of PRL-3 mutants that selectively disrupt either phosphatase activity …

Exploring The Reproductive Phenology Of Feral Horses In North America, Mattie Budine
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Feral horses (Equus ferus caballus) are a prolific species in western North America. Due to their life history traits and history of domestication, they have a longer foaling period compared to native ungulates, such as elk (Cervus canadensis) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). I examined the observed foaling seasons of different regional herds throughout North America to identify if foaling seasons are uniform across latitudes or if they present a latitudinal shift similar to ungulates. My dataset (n=523 foals) consisted of various research studies and unpublished observations of different feral horse herds throughout North America. The results are graphs comparing …
Resting-State Electrodermal Activity In Adults With And Without Adhd, Charles Knowlton
Resting-State Electrodermal Activity In Adults With And Without Adhd, Charles Knowlton
Theses & ETDs
A growing body of literature shows strong evidence for children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) exhibiting hypoarousal compared to neurotypical children. This research is supported in conditions where stimuli are present and at a resting-state. However, the research with adult ADHD is conflicting. Adults with ADHD have been shown to exhibit no difference, hypoarousal, and hyperarousal compared to neurotypical adults. Therefore, the present study aims to employ a resting-state analysis of electrodermal activity (arousal) between self-reporting adults with ADHD (n = 11) and without ADHD (n = 8). A self-report questionnaire was also utilized to quantify the participant’s ADHD symptoms. Participants …
