Structural Studies Of Cellular Prion Protein And Amyloid-B Oligomers, Lauren Klein Jan 2025

Structural Studies Of Cellular Prion Protein And Amyloid-B Oligomers, Lauren Klein

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease with significant societal impacts. AD is the only top ten leading cause of death that cannot be prevented, cured, slowed, or even diagnosed before symptoms are present. AD, similar to other neurodegenerative diseases, has been linked to protein aggregation as the key factor in the disease pathology. However, the mechanism by which AD proliferates is poorly understood. Recent advancements in techniques and methods in structural biology, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron microscopy (EM), have opened a new era of studies into protein aggregates implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, including AD. Therefore, this …

The Tenth Anniversary Of Marriage Equality: How Traditional Marriage Law Led To Constitutional Protection For Same-Sex Marriage, Joanna L. Grossman Jan 2025

The Tenth Anniversary Of Marriage Equality: How Traditional Marriage Law Led To Constitutional Protection For Same-Sex Marriage, Joanna L. Grossman

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This essay explores how the history of interstate marriage recognition law was central to the Supreme Court’s recognition of constitutional protection for the right of same-sex couples to marry. Prior to the 1990s, there were essentially no laws on same-sex marriage in the United States. That changed in the 1990s, when the Hawaii Supreme Court issued a ruling in Baehr v. Lewin that made authorization of same-sex marriage seem inevitable in that state. The threat fueled the adoption first of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996 and then mini-DOMAs in most states. Those laws were broad and …

Gene Expression Regulation By Pabpn1 Phosphorylation And Microexon Splicing, Jackson Miles Gordon Jan 2025

Gene Expression Regulation By Pabpn1 Phosphorylation And Microexon Splicing, Jackson Miles Gordon

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The processing of pre-mRNAs into mature mRNAs is a key regulatory step in eukaryotic gene expression programs. Before an mRNA can be exported to the cytoplasm, its 5′ end must be modified with a 7-methylguanosine cap structure, intervening non-coding sequence must be removed (spliced), and a poly(A) tail must be synthesized at its 3′ end. Each of these processes are dynamic and provide contextual regulation, tuning an mRNAs coding capacity, stability, and translation potential as needed. The Neugebauer Lab has developed highly specialized tools to dissect how RNAs are spliced, cleaved, and polyadenylated in numerous biological systems. In this study, …

Children And Chairs, Artifacts And Reality, Adam J. Macleod Jan 2025

Children And Chairs, Artifacts And Reality, Adam J. Macleod

Scholarly Articles

Where do children come from? The source of childhood—either nature or political will—is a matter not merely of chronology but of authority. Whoever makes children gets to define childhood. Legal childhood is one type of legal personhood. Legal personhood matters because legal persons bear legal rights and duties. Rights and duties direct how we act toward each other. Thus, our ideas about how persons come to be, who counts as a person, and how persons are defined in law determine in large part how we act toward persons, both other persons and ourselves.

A legal person is an artifact of …

Precautionary Measures And The Risk Of Escalation In The Use Of Nuclear Weapons, Jeffrey Biller Jan 2025

Precautionary Measures And The Risk Of Escalation In The Use Of Nuclear Weapons, Jeffrey Biller

Emory International Law Review

The use of nuclear weapons presents an unparalleled risk of escalation, a reality that has become increasingly pressing due to recent geopolitical developments, particularly Russia’s revised nuclear doctrine and its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. While the legal frameworks governing armed conflict, particularly International Humanitarian Law (IHL), do not traditionally require an analysis of escalation risk before an attack, this article argues that the extreme and immediate consequences of nuclear escalation necessitate its inclusion within the precautionary measures framework.

This article first examines the concept of nuclear escalation, identifying both intended and unintended risks associated with nuclear strikes. While nuclear deterrence …

Is It Possible To Draft A Universal Criminal Code?, Paul H. Robinson

American University International Law Review

The world contains hundreds of distinct communities with their own traditions and values. One might assume that, despite the best efforts of international organizations, it would be impossible to draft a criminal code that could operate effectively for all countries. Is that the case? If one tried to construct a universal criminal code, what sorts of challenges and limitations with the effort face?

[Introduction] Fibrosis is one of the pathological conditions underlying the progression of numerous chronic diseases, and it contributes substantially to morbidity and mortality worldwide. Increasing amounts of evidence indicate that epigenetic mechanisms—including DNA methylation, histone modifications, RNA modifications, and non-coding RNAs—play pivotal roles in epithelial cell injury and maladaptive tissue repair, inflammatory cell and fibroblast activation, and extracellular matrix remodeling and accumulation. Compared to genetic alterations, epigenetic changes are relatively reversible, positioning them as promising therapeutic targets. The articles collected in this Research Topic highlight recent advances in understanding how epigenetic regulation shapes fibrotic processes across multiple organ systems and …

The Blue Economy Comes To Green Creek, Ursula Ramsey Jan 2025

The Blue Economy Comes To Green Creek, Ursula Ramsey

South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business

Oceans, touted as the “next great economic frontier,” are projected to contribute three trillion dollars to the global economy. Beyond their economic potential, oceans provide a host of environmental benefits: oceans supply over half of the planet’s oxygen and contain nearly all of the Earth’s water and biosphere. Especially because the high seas represent one of the few remaining global commons, oceans present a governance challenge. Meeting this challenge is the concept of the blue economy, a form of governance that combines environmental stewardship, economic development, and social equity. This article, in discussing Mulvihill v. South Carolina Department of Health …

Balancing Innovation And Attention: A Review Of Digital Distraction, Self-Regulation, And Technology Policy In Modern Classrooms, Kayla R. Schlichting

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This literature review examines how digital technology influences student attention, engagement, and self-regulated learning in 1:1 classrooms. Across 30 studies, technology is deemed neither inherently harmful nor helpful; rather, its impact depends on how technology is used and the instructional design the educator employs. Digital distractions, such as smartphones, multitasking, and peer interruptions decrease focus and negatively impact academic performance. However, strategies such as goal setting, structured note-taking, reflection, and feedback loops help students develop greater self-regulation and manage their engagement. Overall, this review emphasizes the need for clear and consistent expectations, well-designed technological lessons, and intentional instruction, especially as …

Study On Motion Prediction Analysis Of Large Vessels Entering Kaohsiung Port Second Harbor, Li-Heng Cheng, Hsing-Yu Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Pilotage is a primary service offered by ports, ensuring the safe passage of entering and exiting vessels. This study applied motion prediction analysis to large vessels navigating the constrained waterways of Kaohsiung Port’s second harbor. To address the needs of pilots and port operators, a simplified planar motion equation was developed that incorporated speed over ground and rate of turn (ROT) as primary variables. The model relied on inputs of limited navigational data, enabling pilots to predict changes in heading and position over time and determine the conditions for safe harbor entry. Vessel paths and turning angles were analyzed to …
