Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier
Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier
Sociology: Faculty Books
This innovative Handbook examines how gender shapes social activism and is shaped by activism. With a unique interdisciplinary focus, it explores the effects of the gender binary on experiences of activism, considering how different movements negotiate and, at times, challenge these traditional conceptions. It then moves beyond the binary to explore how gender is challenged by contemporary movements.
Expert authors discuss the impact and limitations of the gender binary, using examples such as the MeToo movement to demonstrate how viewing men and women as separate, monolithic categories results in countless differences being overlooked. Chapters present a range of global and …

The Green Advantage: An Analysis Of Open Access Publications At A Mid-Sized University, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Maria A. Barca
The Green Advantage: An Analysis Of Open Access Publications At A Mid-Sized University, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Maria A. Barca
Library Publications
Introduction: The escalating cost of journals, loss of access to research results, and mandates by funding agencies favor Open Access (OA). The suggestion that OA publications are cited more than those behind paywalls should appeal to faculty where citations are critical for promotion and tenure. Further, the option to publish Green OA without cost would be advantageous to faculty who lack financial support for OA publications.
Methods: We used data from Scopus to analyze field weighted citation counts (FWCI) for OA publications over 20 years in terms of OA type, document type, subject area, and subject normalized impact factor.

Playing Empathy: The Impacts Of Theatre On Empathy, Isabelle J. Daoust
Playing Empathy: The Impacts Of Theatre On Empathy, Isabelle J. Daoust
Honors Program Theses
The purpose of this study is to address a gap in the literature regarding the relationship between theatre and empathy; specifically, investigating how varying levels of participation in theatre may influence cognitive and affective empathy. This study examines whether empathy can be fostered through mere observation of theatre or whether active participation yields greater effects. Twenty-eight undergraduate participants, all of whom attend a small liberal arts college in the United States, either participated in three theatre games or observed their fellow participants playing them. The results did not support the primary hypotheses, as most empathy-related measures showed no statistically significant …

Gallium Β-Cyclodextrin Nanoparticles Containing Both Gallium Protoporphyrin And Gallium Nitrate Exhibit Antimicrobial Activity Against Nontuberculous Mycobacteria In Vitro And In Vivo, Seoung-Ryoung Choi, Bradley E. Britigan, Prabagaran Narayanasamy
Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med
Effective and safe antibiotics active against pathogenic mycobacterial species are needed. Iron is an essential element for bacterial survival. Ga(NO3)3 (GN) and Ga protoporphyrin (GP) as iron mimetics have each been shown to inhibit the iron metabolism and growth of various mycobacterial species. In this study, the dual cyclodextrin nanoparticle (CDGPGN) is prepared that carries GP and GN using a sonication homogenization technique to increase the efficacy of the combination therapy. CDGPGN shows a long-acting antimicrobial activity against Mycobacteroides abscessus residing in monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM). A murine pulmonary study showed that the CDGPGN also inhibited the growth …
Sylvan Rhetoric In The Planes Of Plato’S Phaedrus, Madison Jones
Sylvan Rhetoric In The Planes Of Plato’S Phaedrus, Madison Jones
Professional and Public Writing Faculty Publications
Over the past few decades, Plato’s Phaedrus has become an important text for scholars interested in tracing new materialist approaches to the history of rhetoric and writing. Drawing on rhetoric and plant studies scholarship, this essay contributes to this conversation by arguing that trees disclose an important layer of irony in the dialogue, producing a deep, if not ambivalent, unity that brings together rhetoric, writing, and discourse. Through a study of trees in the dialogue, this essay demonstrates how the Phaedrus offers rich connections between spatial, nonhuman, and ecological dimensions of writing, rhetoric, and discourse.

Syntheses And Characterization Of Isomeric 3-Bromopropanol Capped Oligoviologens, Marcus Anthony White
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The work described in this thesis has generated new oligoviologen structures designed to facilitate the formation of supermolecules that incorporate photoactive and redox-active groups. These viologens have several potential uses; for example, the 4+ oligoviologen (viologen 5) exhibits solvatochromic properties in various polar protic and polar aprotic solvents, indicating suitability for use as a solvatochromic dye. The syntheses of bis(4,4’-bipyridine)ortho-xylene, bis(4,4’-bipyridine)meta-xylene, and bis(4,4’-bipyridine)para-xylene were demonstrated through 1H NMR characterization and confirmed through literature. Bis(4,4’-bipyridine)ortho-xylene, bis(4,4’-bipyridine)meta-xylene, and bis(4,4’-bipyridine)para-xylene were produced in 68%, 72%, and 54% yields, respectively. 4,4’-Bipyridine-1-[4-(bromomethyl)phenylmethyl]-1’- …

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship
For many nurseries, it is difficult to diagnose Phytophthora-infected plants in time to prevent disease incursion and spread, especially if the infection occurs on roots and causes no or limited symptoms on aerial plant parts. Rapid, accurate, and specific diagnostic methods can facilitate the identification and removal of infected plants. This study was conducted to investigate whether specific nursery types within California are more likely to have different Phytophthora species and which hosts are more likely to test positive for a Phytophthora species using immunological and molecular diagnostic tools. From fall 2016 to spring 2019, we collected 1,180 root samples …

The Prison Yard Dilemma: How Agents Cooperate In A 2-D Space, Boland Unfug
Theses & ETDs
The prisoner’s dilemma and its variations offer profound insights into conflict and cooperation, captivating researchers across disciplines. Yet, a mutation of this classic game involving physical agents in a two-dimensional discrete environment remains largely unexplored. To explore this new facet of the prisoner’s dilemma, I developed a computer simulation using C++, Python, Box2D, and SFML that can simulate up to 1000 agents, uses deterministic, reproducible physics, and provides users with a complete history of the results. I designed this tool with the intention to discover if movement strategies were more impactful than gameplay decision rules and see if Tit For …

Friend And Foe: Tgf-Beta, Its Role In Tumor Development, And An Analysis Of Chung Et Al. (2018), Yosef Sonbolian
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
This paper will analyze an important study performed by Chung et al. (2018) regarding transforming growth factor-beta (TGFbeta), which plays an important role in various cellular processes. Paradoxically, TGF-beta plays a different role in the development of cancer at various points. In early-stage tumors, TGF-beta has been known to inhibit cancer growth, but in later stages, it acts as a cancer promoter. Chung et al. (2018) attempted to ascertain the efficaciousness of the drug Sorafenib in suppressing TGF-beta responses, as well as the ways that this drug achieves its goal and the implications that their findings may have for future …
Joanne Stubbe And The Mechanistic Study Of Ribonucleotide Reductases, Madysen York
Joanne Stubbe And The Mechanistic Study Of Ribonucleotide Reductases, Madysen York
Natural Sciences Student Research Presentations
To catalyze the formation of deoxyribonucleotides from ribonucleotides, the enzyme has to remove an hydroxyl from the ribose sugar part of the molecule (circled in in green) (“Ribonucleotide Reductase”).
The problem is that hydroxyl doesn’t naturally want to break from the base it is attached to, leaving many researchers unable to discern the chemical process going on inside these enzymes that make the bond break possible (Strauss).
Using Machine Learning And Aerial Imagery To Detect Macroalgae, Dylan Niner
Using Machine Learning And Aerial Imagery To Detect Macroalgae, Dylan Niner
Theses & ETDs
Coastal ecosystems are essential for biodiversity and ecological services; they are increasingly under threat from human activity. Within these systems, macroalgae (submerged aquatic vegetation, or SAV) play a vital role. For that reason, assessing the condition and presence of SAV is important for understanding coastal ecosystem health. Traditional field surveys for SAV are limited in spatial and temporal resolution. In contrast, high-resolution Aerial (AUV) imagery, when combined with Convolutional neural networks, provides a great opportunity for analyzing this critical habitat at the necessary scales. Neural networks are computer models of interconnected nodes that learn to map inputs to outputs by …

This thesis explores how a liberal arts education, combined with extensive practical teaching experience and real-world insights, has shaped my philosophy and trajectory as a future educator as I traversed the college system. Drawing from interdisciplinary coursework and firsthand classroom involvement, I examine the benefits and challenges of pursuing a nontraditional path into teaching, particularly through the lens of Florida’s certification system. Rather than following a conventional teacher preparation program, I intentionally crafted an individualized academic journey grounded in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, complemented by sustained practicum experiences across multiple school districts. My work highlights how liberal arts …
Cerebellar Contributions To Vocal - Motor Integration: A Comparative Tractography Study, Alexys Siagel
Cerebellar Contributions To Vocal - Motor Integration: A Comparative Tractography Study, Alexys Siagel
Theses & ETDs
Vocal behavior in mammals ranges from stereotyped, reflexive calls to highly flexible, learned vocalizations. While research has traditionally emphasized cortical and basal ganglia circuits in vocal learning, recent work has highlighted the cerebellum’s expanding role in modulating complex, adaptive motor behavior. This study uses diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-based tractography to investigate cerebellar connectivity from five key regions involved in respiration, swallowing, and vocalization—the nucleus ambiguus, periaqueductal gray, basal ganglia, anterior ventral lateral thalamus, and vocal motor cortex - across four species: harbor seal, elephant seal, California sea lion, and coyote. Results revealed that pinnipeds exhibit broader, denser, and more lateralized …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Phytoplanktonic Groups In Sarasota Bay And Lido Beach, C'Erra Tubbs
Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Phytoplanktonic Groups In Sarasota Bay And Lido Beach, C'Erra Tubbs
Theses & ETDs
Phytoplankton are known to be very responsive to environmental variables and changes such as temperature and salinity. There are many intersections between all these understudied variables. Here, I show the intersectionalities of different phytoplankton groups and their abundances among various environmental conditions and ecological patterns. Phytoplankton were collected and analyzed in January and July 2023 from two separate locations: Sarasota Bay and Lido Beach. Collections were also done from two separate depths. Dinoflagellates and diatoms responded differently to seasonal changes. Dinoflagellates were more sensitive to temperature changes, with clear differences between seasons, while diatoms were more adaptable to changes with …
Assessing The Potential For Hybridization Of Three Syngnathus Species In Sarasota Bay, Megan Waters
Assessing The Potential For Hybridization Of Three Syngnathus Species In Sarasota Bay, Megan Waters
Theses & ETDs
Located in Southwest Florida, Sarasota Bay is home to three sympatric and congeneric species of pipefish: The Chain Pipefish (Syngnathus louisianae), the Dusky Pipefish (Syngnathus floridae), and the Gulf Pipefish (Syngnathus scovelli). These three species share an overlapping habitat, which allows for potential hybridization to occur. This hybridization could lead to potential extinction of current species or the creation of new species, due to the mismatched matings. This poses an issue to the conservation of the parent species, as current legislation does not protect hybrid species. This experiment set out to find whether the sympatric nature of the three Syngnathus …
Bonnethead Sharks Ethogrambonnethead Sharks In Captivity And Determine If Their Activity Level Changes With Time Of Day And Around Feeding Times, Stephen Paine
Theses & ETDs
This thesis is testing to see how having specific feeding times modifies bonnethead sharks’ activity levels. Bonnethead sharks are the smallest kind of hammerhead shark species. We got permission to record and work with the three female bonnethead sharks at Mote Marine Aquarium. The hypothesis is that bonnethead sharks at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium will increase their velocity in anticipation of being fed if they are consistently fed at specific times, and their velocity will be stable at a lesser speed at all other times. Data were collected for a total of seven days using a camera. At Mote, …

Investigation Of Microrna In Canine Congestive Heart Failure, Jada Prignano
Theses & ETDs
Myxomatous mitral valvular degeneration (MMVD) is the most common heart disease in dogs, as well as a significant disease in the human heart. MMVD is characterized by valvular thickening and regurgitation, leading to secondary cardiac structure and function changes. The prevalence of this disease has been correlated wilh age and breed. Small breed dogs such as the Cavalier King Charles spaniel (CVKC), are predisposed to the disease, and the prevalence in the CVKC dogs older than 10 years is greater than 90%. Given that the disease is common, but only a minority of dogs will progress to heart failure, it …

In fact, due to our increasing dependence on electronics, the industry is rapidly …
Evaluation Of An Efficient Ensembling Strategy For Linear Classifiers And Neural Networks, Lelaina Rose
Evaluation Of An Efficient Ensembling Strategy For Linear Classifiers And Neural Networks, Lelaina Rose
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis I examine a specific ensembling technique—which I call “additive ensembling”—and how it performs when applied to linear classifiers, the perceptron, in particular, and feedforward neural networks. This technique differs from previous methods of ensembling, as it does not require the storage of individual weight vectors. Instead, it iteratively sums weight vectors from multiple separate models, resulting in one final summed model containing just one weight vector per class. It is implemented as an extension of scikit-learn’s machine learning library’s model classes. This algorithm is very straightforward to implement, requiring only a few lines of code and is …
