Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor And D-Dopachrome Tautomerase As Biomarkers And Key Modulators Of Tumor Progression In Head And Neck Cancer And Melanoma, Caroline Naomi Valdez
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor (MIF) and its homolog D-dopachrome Tautomerase (DDT) are pro-inflammatory cytokines implicated in tumor progression across multiple cancers. Both MIF and DDT act through canonical CD74 and non-canonical CXCR2/4/7 signaling pathways, which contribute to immune suppression and tumor progression. Elevated MIF levels are associated with metastasis and poor prognosis in HNC and contribute to immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) resistance in melanoma. DDT’s role in cancer is not well understood. This study aims to evaluate the expression and therapeutic potential of MIF and DDT inhibition, focusing on their ability to modulate immune responses and improve survival outcomes as …

Characterization Of Legionella Pneumophila Effector Protein Ceg10, Emmanuella Ofoka
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Legionella pneumophila, the causative agent of Legionnaires' disease, utilizes a Type IV secretion system (T4SS) to transport effector proteins into host cells. This bacterium is said to have over 300 effector proteins. Among these, the Ceg10 effector protein had remained uncharacterized, despite evidence suggesting the importance of bacterial effector proteins in the host-pathogen interaction. This study aimed to perform a structural and functional characterization of Ceg10 through transcriptomic, bioinformatics, and molecular analyses. Transcriptomic profiling of HEK 293T cells expressing Ceg10 revealed significant differential gene expression, with approximately 20 upregulated genes, including leucine-rich repeat, as well as other downregulated genes. …

Expanding On The Relationship Between Incivility And Resource Depletion: Examining Race And Personal Tolerance For Mistreatment As Moderators, Aishwarya Kurmar
Expanding On The Relationship Between Incivility And Resource Depletion: Examining Race And Personal Tolerance For Mistreatment As Moderators, Aishwarya Kurmar
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Workplace incivility is ubiquitous, regularly impacting working adults. Through the framework of Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, I examined the relationship between workplace incivility and resource depletion using daily diary methodology. Workplace incivility negatively impacts employee outcomes at the organizational and individual level. As such, it was hypothesized that workplace incivility would have a positive correlation with increased resource depletion, measured as psychological fatigue. Under selective incivility theory, disenfranchised groups face increased instances of incivility. Following this theory, non-whites were hypothesized to experience a greater association between workplace incivility and resource depletion. Additionally, an individual’s personal tolerance of mistreatment for …

College Students’ Beliefs: Association Between Skin Color And Acceptance, Christopher James Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
The Multiracial population represents the fastest-growing demographic group in the United States and is expected to more than double by 2060 (Vespa et al., 2018). Despite this rapid increase in the Multiracial population, there is a dearth of research regarding racial identity development, anxiety, and depression on this group. Social inclusion has been recognized as a fundamental human need, and Multiracial individuals may be more likely to be accepted into a majority group if their appearance is racially ambiguous. The current study builds on previous knowledge by utilizing a novel measure developed to examine the beliefs held by Monoracial and …

Charles "Chuck" Benson, CEO of TechBio Industries, recollected an early Monday morning in March 2019 when he boarded a flight from San Francisco to Philadelphia to meet with the CEO of MedX Supply Chain. During the meeting, MedX requested TechBio to cut prices by 15%, threatening to source their products from a Chinese manufacturer. MedX reasoned that 60% of the market did not care about the quality of disposable lab products. Consequently, TechBio lost most of MedX's contracts, causing their sales to drop from $40 million to $30 million in about a year.

North Texas Research Forum 2025
Introduction: Common scabies is a parasitic dermatologic condition that often presents as an extremely pruritic rash. A rare and highly contagious variant of common scabies is crusted scabies, formerly known as Norwegian scabies. While infection with common scabies typically involves 10 to 20 mites, individuals with crusted scabies are burdened with thousands to millions of mites. Crusted scabies is characterized clinically by hyperkeratotic papules and plaques, most commonly on the palms and soles. Due to the variety of presentations seen in scabies, it can be difficult to diagnose. Case presentations: We present 4 cases of crusted scabies. An 89-year-old male …

Caves, Calculus, And Climate Change: Measuring And Modeling The Discharge Of Biz Falls In Mammoth Cave National Park, Ava Lich
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Climate change poses a significant global challenge, with increasing levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide as a primary driver of rising temperatures and environmental disruptions. Karst systems, such as those in South-Central Kentucky, play a role in sequestering atmospheric CO₂ through the dissolution of limestone, a process that forms unique landscapes while mitigating climate impacts. This study investigates the discharge dynamics of Cascade River in Great Onyx Cave to enhance understanding of the relationship between hydrology and carbon sequestration in karst environments. A barrel weir equipped with pressure transducers was employed to collect and measure water flow, and Torricelli’s law was …

Assessing Nitrous Oxide Flux In Denitrification-Inhibiting Maize, Emma Mccullough, Sakshi Paudel, Holly Anderson, Angela D. Kent
MICRO-CCS student projects
- Conventional agriculture relies heavily on nitrogen (N) fertilizers to increase short-term crop yields.
- Microbial nitrification and denitrification drive N losses from soil systems.
- Denitrification produces N O, a potent green house gas (GHG).
- Biological denitrification inhibition (BDI) traits are present in the ancestor of modern maize, teosinte.
- Reintroduction of BDI traits into modern maize can reduce GHG production and increase nutrient use efficiency (NUE) as it minimizes soil N losses from denitrification.
- Monitoring N O emissions from BDI-introgressed maize lines can asses GHG reduction and potential NUE gains.

Navahine V. Hawai'i Dept. Of Transportation: The Keiki Will Lead Us, Catherine Smith
Scholarly Articles
The author analyzes the landmark case Navahine v. Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, which culminated in the world’s first constitutional climate settlement. Catherine Smith, serving as an expert for the youth plaintiffs, situates the case within Hawaiʻi’s legal tradition of prioritizing children’s rights and intergenerational equity. She explores the evolution of children’s constitutional protections, contrasting Hawaiʻi’s progressive jurisprudence with the dominant adult-centric legal framework on the mainland. She critiques four recurring analytical missteps in U.S. courts that marginalize children’s interests and highlights Hawaiʻi’s public trust doctrine and cultural values, such as the Aloha Spirit, as models for addressing climate-related harms. …
