Towards An Ethos Of Discussing In-Corporeal Gender In Fantasy Literature: Part I—A 'Feminine' Eldil And A 'Masculine' Vala, Luke Shelton
Mythopoeic Society Seminar Proceedings
Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people engaged with others on social media in ways that they had not before. During this time, many new interpretive communities arose. In one of these conversations, the way that fans interpreted Tolkien’s description of the physical characteristics of the Valar resonated with a passage in C.S. Lewis’s Perelandra (the second book of his Space Trilogy) where the narrator describes the physical manifestation of Perelandra and Malacandra. In this paper I perform a close read of the two passages, to examine the textual meaning, to see what interpretive room there is in …

Studying The Impact Of Weather Changes On Bird Breeding., Perle Suana, Yangyang Tao
Posters-at-the-Capitol
Climate change start to impact our daily life recently. The shifting climate introduces frequent and unpredictable temperature fluctuations. For species like birds, particularly those that reproduce through eggs, maintaining stable temperatures during incubation is crucial for reproductive success. Despite the significance of temperature stability, limited research has delved into understanding the thresholds of temperature tolerance during incubation. In this investigation, we will apply the data science tools to analyze the local temperature dataset over the past decade and the birds incubation dataset. Our aim was to explore potential correlations between extreme temperature swings coinciding with the breeding season and instances …

Imagining Better: Requiring Trust And Imagination In Formal Engineering Education, Sneha Rathi, Jacqueline Handley
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Teachers and students bear the brunt of enacting K–12 engineering while having little input into engineering practices or values. In this reflective essay, a high school engineering teacher and an engineering education researcher reflect on a class bridging engineering and social justice. We describe the development of politicized trust with each other and students while partnering around shared commitments at a predominately Black school (e.g., Vakil et al., 2016). We also explore challenges in decentering conceptions of engineering derived from depoliticized, exclusionary practice. We demonstrate an urgent need to center educators and students from marginalized identities in formal engineering education.

Research is just as vital to an artist’s practice as it is to any other field of study; however, research for an artist is not limited to textbooks and journals. An artist’s research mainly consists of on field practice, and due to this, many artists do not have the time to experiment with materials as their energy is expended in the active making process. This is where public conferences become vital in the artists practice because they provide an accessible space to share research and make connections with other artists. One of the most prolific conferences in the realm of …
The English And The Welsh: Tolkien’S Rewriting Of History In The Legendarium, Alexander Retakh
The English And The Welsh: Tolkien’S Rewriting Of History In The Legendarium, Alexander Retakh
Journal of Tolkien Research
Early legendarium is often called a "mythology for England," while Tolkien's later tales have been described as mythologies for Britain (by Dimitra Fimi) or Englishness (by Thomas Honegger). Later legendarium still contains fictional versions of English-like peoples, the Hobbits and the Rohirrim. Their construction leads to a re-construction of elements of English history in the subcreation, that often produces fictional analogs not only of the English but of the Welsh. How Tolkien described contacts between the English and their closest neighbors reveals his idea of Englishness (his own national identity) and its place in the narrative.

Plymouth Interdisciplinary Education Open Journal
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that causes social difficulties such as making and maintaining friendships and sensory difficulties that cause distress triggered by light, sound or smell stimuli that significantly impact daily life. Roughly 1 in every 100 children are diagnosed with ASD (NHS Inform, 2023). However, females are notably less likely to receive a formal diagnosis than males, which leads to higher rates of poor mental health and lack of self-acceptance. Females with ASD are likely not to receive their diagnosis or support for their difficulties until late teens or early adulthood. Those diagnosed with ASD …

Naming Names: Phenomenology And Pseudonyms, Rebecca Woods
Plymouth Interdisciplinary Education Open Journal
This short opinion piece uses my experiences of formulating pseudonyms during my doctoral project as a way of examining this task. Names are our public labels and as such they are part of self-perception and are catalysts for responses to others. Pseudonyms are not empty; they are cultural artefacts in academia which form connections with participants. The issues addressed with regard to re-naming are research context, ontology, method, navigating sensitivities, contextual determination, concluding with a review of congruence and robustness. The task of generating pseudonyms has the potential for being an exciting way of encapsulating how researchers consider participants and …

Exploring The Role Of Cyclin D1 In Regulating Thermogenic Program In Brown Adipose Tissue, Chengrui Qiu
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Scholarship
Adipose tissue plays a multifaceted role in regulating metabolic health and contributing to the pathophysiology of various diseases. Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT), a vital organ that senses different environment cues such as cold stress and diet and then undergoes non-shivering thermogenesis in mammalian animals, enhancing energy expenditure to combat obesity. In our recent published study, we found that the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling pathway exhibits doubleedge effects in regulating thermogenic function, with opposite role in BAT and white adipose tissue (WAT). To further investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the dual role of mTORC1 in thermogenic regulation, …

Expendable To Essential: Conceptualizing The Rhetorical Othering Of Frontline Workers, Sarah Sexton
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
As my article discusses, Over the course of the pandemic, there has been a social shift in the way certain workers are represented within American society. Everyday workers such as grocery store clerks, baristas, and retail managers were deemed “essential workers” as COVID-19 created a global healthcare crisis. Although these workers were declared as essential to the wellbeing of American society during the pandemic, there is evident dissent between the collective experience of frontline employees and those outside of this community. The rhetoric produced by members of the essential community, including myself, alongside statistical findings reflect an ongoing instance of …

The biodiversity crisis is driven by extinction at two scales: the global extinction of species and the local extirpation of populations (i.e., range contraction). Local extirpations are especially acute in the eastern United States, which has lost a substantial portion of its native mammalian fauna. Species restoration in the U.S., therefore, should be utilised more to revitalise and restore degraded systems. State wildlife agencies can elevate discussions about species restoration and facilitate internal capacity to conduct restoration projects by including locally extirpated species in State Wildlife Action Plans, which are currently under revision, and will guide state conservation programs for …

First In Time Since Time Immemorial: Tribal Instream Rights Undercut Water Taking Claims, Paul Stanton Kibel, L. Victoria Wang
American Indian Law Journal
Courts have held that American Indian tribal fishery rights can give rise to tribal instream flow rights. They have also held that the curtailment of rights of diversion to protect fisheries under the Federal Endangered Species Act may give rise to potential takings claims under the Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution. In its 2019 decision in Baley v. United States the federal circuit court of appeals held that minimum instream flows under the ESA were needed to fulfill American Indian tribal fishery rights, and these rights carried a priority date of “time immemorial” that was senior to any …

Grief is universal. It permeates all things. This collection is organized into four sections, each concerned with such universality, such permeability, and how the “small,” personal griefs of human relationships echo and form dialogues with the larger, more global griefs of war and violence. Ultimately, at the core of this collection, lies an investigation of family, masculinity, and how all griefs are absorbed and passed down by the generations that have preceded us.

BACKGROUND: Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), caused primarily by Candida albicans, is currently treated with either prescription or over-the-counter antifungal drugs, often with variable efficacy and relapses. New and improved therapeutic strategies, including drug-free treatment alternatives, are needed. Upon overgrowth or environmental triggers, C. albicans yeast transitions into hyphae that results in an aberrant immunopathologic response by neutrophils, contributing to the characteristic vulvovaginal symptoms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a patented intravaginal cooling device (Vlisse®) to provide symptom relief in women with VVC via putative reversal of C. albicans hyphae to the commensal yeast form, with …
