Clinical Evaluation Of Ozone Gel Versus Hyaluronic Acid Gel On Palatal Wound Following Free Gingival Graft Harvesting: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Hisham Tarek, Nesma Shemais, Dalia Ghalwash, • Ahmed El Barbary
Dentistry
Objective: This randomized clinical trial (RCT) compares the effectiveness of ozone gel (GeliO3) and hyaluronic acid (HA) gel(Gengigel) in enhancing wound healing and reducing postoperative discomfort following free gingival graft (FGG) harvesting. Methods: Fifty-six patients requiring FGG for mucogingival defects were randomly assigned into two groups: the ozone gel group and the HA gel group. The primary outcome was postoperative pain, assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS) and analgesic consumption. Secondary outcomes included wound healing, evaluated using the Landry healing index, and color match assess-ment. Data were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests with a significance level of p< 0:05.Results: Both treatment groups exhibited significant pain reduction over time (p< 0:001). Although there was no statistically significant difference between the groups, a faster decline in pain was observed in the ozone group by Day 3. Analgesic consumption was significantly lower in the ozone group on Days 2 and 3 (p ¼ 0:042). The healing index and color match scores showed a steady improvement in both groups, with the ozone group demonstrating slightly higher values at various time points, though not statistically significant. Conclusion: Both ozone gel and HA gel effectively enhanced post-FGG healing, reduced pain, and improved tissue esthetics.Ozone therapy showed potential advantages in early pain relief and lower analgesic dependence. These findings suggest that ozonetherapy may serve as an alternative or adjunctive treatment for palatal wound management in periodontal surgery. Furtherresearch is needed to confirm its clinical superiority over HA gel.

The Pressure Is On: A Quality Improvement Project To Educate Nurses On Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries, Lance Ward
Master's Projects and Capstones
Objective Hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) are injuries developed by admitted patients, from treatment interventions that they encounter during their hospital stay. If a patient acquires a HAPI during their stay, the hospital is required to cover all expenses related to the injury. An in-patient trauma unit at a large medical center wishes to improve patient care by educating nursing staff on preventive measures of HAPIs. A review of relevant literature on HAPIs from the past five years was conducted to identify HAPI preventions tools, such as the Braden Scale and SKINS bundle, as well as the best methods to …

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Digestion elevates metabolism through the heat increment of feeding (HIF) – the energy expended on mechanical and biochemical processes after eating. Quantifying this cost is essential for bioenergetic models that predict energy flow and prey requirements in populations. Using breath-by-breath respirometry, we measured oxygen consumption (V̇ O2 ) in eight common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) before and after feeding standardized meals (1659–2658 kcal of capelin and herring). Metabolic rate rose by ∼37% above resting levels, peaking 60 min after feeding before returning to baseline within 2 h. When scaled across the day, digestion increased daily metabolic needs by ∼8.2% of …
Understanding Outer Membrane Vesicle Biogenesis In Bacteroides Thetaiotaomicron, Evan J. Pardue
Understanding Outer Membrane Vesicle Biogenesis In Bacteroides Thetaiotaomicron, Evan J. Pardue
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are small proteoliposomes generated by active protrusion of the outer membrane (OM) in Gram-negative bacteria during growth. Over 60 years of experimentation has ascribed numerous functions to OMVs produced by different bacteria. However, the mechanism(s) by which OMVs are produced is poorly understood. Due to this, the field remains controversial because many regard OMVs as byproducts of cell lysis and question their physiological relevance. Previous studies in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and related species confirmed that these microbes undergo programmed cell death that results in the stochastic release of vesicles and cellular contents. On the contrary, Bacteroides spp. …

Measurements of pre-industrial conditions are of paramount importance for understanding historical climate change. The Southern Ocean and Antarctic continent are some of the least polluted environments on planet Earth. Alkylamines can rapidly partition into aerosols, increasing their mass, as well as form new particles altogether. We demonstrate the importance of pelagic “open ocean” (OO) and sympagic “sea ice” (SI) regions in supplying distinct organic nitrogen aerosol components. In the aerosol phase, dimethylamine (DMA) and trimethylamine (TMA) are both secondary, though DMA likely originates mainly from pelagic regions, while TMA is associated mainly with sympagic regions. Parallel measurements in ice and …

Cold atmospheric plasmas (CAP) are a versatile tool in medical applications like wound healing. Its therapeutic benefits are partially attributed to the generation of biologically active reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS). Characterization of RONS, however, typically only occurs after treatment. Here we report the first real-time in situ detection of CAP-generated nitric oxide (NO), and the simultaneous detection of cellular calcium ions (Ca²⁺) release using electrochemical sensors during CAP treatment of murine wounds. In vivo, NO rose rapidly within the first minute of CAP treatment but accumulated less overall than in PBS, reflecting reactions with wound-bed targets. In situ …
Learned Resiliency: Lived Experiences Of First Responders, Kevin Francis Sullivan
Learned Resiliency: Lived Experiences Of First Responders, Kevin Francis Sullivan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Scholarly literature has found that post-traumatic stress impacts first responders; however, little attention has been paid to how first responders learn resiliency through post-traumatic growth (PTG). The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore a gap in the literature of first responders who learned resiliency through posttraumatic growth following a critical incident in the line of duty. The research study was grounded in Heidegger’s philosophy of hermeneutic phenomenology, guided by resiliency theory , and informed by post-traumatic growth theory. Seven first responders from multiple disciplines were invited to participate in semi-structured interviews designed to provide rich and reflective …

The study investigates the sex-specific effects of the pluripotency factor OCT4 deficiency in endothelial cells (ECs) on angiogenesis. OCT4 is known for its role in embryonic stem cells, but we recently found that it plays a protective role in ECs during atherosclerosis. Herein, we utilized cultured mouse aortic ECs (MAECs) and several in vivo models, including skin wounding, melanoma tumor implantation, and hindlimb ischemia, to explore the role of OCT4 in angiogenesis in both male and female mice. Our findings revealed significant sexual dimorphism in wild type mice, along with sex differences in responses to OCT4 deficiency across all three …

Factors Associated With Initial Psychogenic Non Epileptic Seizures (Pnes) Amongst Patients With/Without Epileptic Seizures (Es), Enow Ogork
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Psychogenic nonepileptic seizure (PNES) is an important individual and public health concern, but inconsistent results exist in the literature in terms of the circumstances surrounding the initial occurrence of PNES among patients without a prior diagnosis of epilepsy. The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent patient sex, number of medical comorbidities, sleep deprivation, head injury in the past, and eyes closed during seizures predict initial PNES among patients with or without PNES. The precaution adoption process model provided a framework for exploring how individuals become aware of health risks and decide to adopt preventive behaviors. Secondary …

Assessing Native Bee (Hymenoptera: Anthophila) Community Responses To Seasonal Wetland Management And Red Imported Fire Ants (Solenopsis Invicta) In Mississippi, Haley Michelle Hughes
Theses and Dissertations
Seasonal wetlands support the biological needs of diverse migratory and wintering waterbird species across the southern United States. Management of seasonally flooded impoundments often involves water management and soil and vegetation disturbances to promote early successional plant communities yielding abundant seeds for foraging birds. These wetlands are also occupied by native bees (Hymenoptera: Anthophila) and red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta; RIFA), yet how these insects respond to wetland manipulations remains understudied. I experimentally evaluated how native bee communities were influenced by various wetland management practices and reduction of RIFA populations within the wetlands. Overall, wetland manipulation techniques had no …

Suprasegmentals And Small Talk Skills: An Adult Esl/Efl Teacher Training And Curriculum Design, Katya Davida Landau
Master's Projects and Capstones
There is inadequate education and training for Adult ESL teachers on how to teach pronunciation, especially the essential suprasegmental feature of intonation. This leads to the perpetuated issue of lowered intelligibility amongst ESOL learners, which limits their opportunities in English-speaking settings. Through the provision of innovative curriculum and teacher training videos that share pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) on the subject of suprasegmental phonemes, these issues can be addressed.
Any curriculum developed to teach suprasegmentals must consider the role of creative and engaging activities to inspire learners, comprehensibility and intelligibility, embodied pronunciation techniques, and the impact of explicit, communicative, and task-based …

We present a narrative review focusing on pulses’ geographical origin and distribution, their impact on human evolution and history, and their influence on human health. Pulses, including dry peas, beans, and lentils, are renowned for their richness in chemical antioxidants. Despite containing antinutrients, processing techniques preserve their health advantages. Epidemiological research has consistently demonstrated that the consumption of pulses is associated with favorable effects on metabolism. This evidence is further supported by molecular and clinical research, which has elucidated potential nutrigenomic mechanisms and effects on gut microbiota composition underlying their health benefits. However, the literature lacks randomized controlled clinical trials …

Sex Disparities In Prescription Opioids Associated Cardiovascular Adverse Events, Li Ma
Theses and Dissertations
The opioid crisis in the United States has evolved from a medical response to pain into a nationwide public health emergency. The prescription opioids (POs) – associated cardiovascular adverse events (CVAEs) remain insufficiently studied, especially in relation to sex disparities. This dissertation investigates sex disparities in PO-associated cardiovascular adverse events (CVAEs) through an analytic framework integrating artificial-intelligence-assisted literature mining and real-world pharmacovigilance analytics. In the analytic framework, first, AI powered topic modeling was employed to uncover POs-associated CVAEs risks with a focus on sex differences. A total of 1,837 PubMed abstracts were analyzed using two methods, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) …

Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 (Mmp-9) Levels In Dentinal Fluid As A Diagnostic Biomarker For Irreversible Pulpitis, Aryo Megantoro, Valeria Widita Wairooy, Ratna Meidyawati, Endang Winiati Bachtiar
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
Objective: Pulpitis is an inflammatory condition of the dental pulp. The inflammatory status can be accurately assessed by histological examination. Biomarkers, such as matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), are effective indicators of inflammation severity. Among these, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) has emerged as a key mediator of inflammatory processes associated with pulpitis. However, its clinical application as a biomarker remains limited owing to challenges in its extraction. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of MMP-9 extracted from the dentinal fluid as a biomarker for pulpitis. Patients who report to the dental outpatient department following maxillofacial trauma often exhibit suboptimal oral hygiene, which is frequently attributed to challenges in sustaining oral care stemming from pain and restricted mouth opening after the injury. This case report aims to provide an individualized protocol of oral care and pain management for patients with maxillofacial trauma. Case report: A treatment protocol combining the Tailored Brushing Method (TBM), a personalized approach for at-home oral hygiene, and photobiomodulation using low-level laser was performed on a 24-year-old patient with maxillofacial trauma and poor oral hygiene. Results: The TBM is successful in achieving good …

To investigate whether Western-raised Narcotics Anonymous (NA) members engage in non-theistic spirituality and non-humanist modes of sociality with non-human beings, I conducted six qualitative interviews and a small-scale survey within a Vancouver NA community. The majority of participants practice non-theist spirituality, and three interviewees relate to non-humans in ways not accounted for by Western humanism. Findings suggest that connection and sociality are intrinsically woven into recovery and well-being. This research opens conversations about non-theistic spirituality in NA recovery, non-human sociality and healing, processes of ontological negotiation, and the entanglement of spirituality, sociality, and well-being. Through daily practices of exploration and …

Objectives: The human amniotic membrane (HAM) is a promising scaffold for oral applications due to its antimicrobial properties, which help protect against bacterial degradation. However, evidence of its activity against oral bacteria remains limited. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the HAM against selected Gram-positive oral bacteria, namely, Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), Streptococcus sobrinus (S. sobrinus), and Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis). Methods: HAM in 1 cm2-pieces was inoculated with bacterial suspensions and incubated at 37 °C in 5% carbon dioxide (CO2) for 48 hours to evaluate …
