Latine Immigrant Survivors Of Sexual Assault: Clinical Considerations For Aid And Empowerment, Jasmine Pochini
Latine Immigrant Survivors Of Sexual Assault: Clinical Considerations For Aid And Empowerment, Jasmine Pochini
Counseling Psychology | Master's Theses
This thesis project attempts to ascertain the impact of sexual assault on Latine immigrants in the United States with the aid of a literature review and subsequent manual of clinical and sociocultural recommendations. The historical and political background of immigration in the U.S. is discussed, providing a background for the difficulties that Latine immigrants have faced for decades. All facets of immigration are explored, as well as the hostility that many immigrants face due to anti-immigrant sentiment. This combined with the acculturation process proves to have drastic effects on mental health. Sexual assault is then explored, identifying background and statistical …
From Cypherpunks To Decentralized Finance: How Crypto-Anarchy Is Redefining Legal And Economic Systems, Alesia Zhuk
From Cypherpunks To Decentralized Finance: How Crypto-Anarchy Is Redefining Legal And Economic Systems, Alesia Zhuk
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
This article explores the evolution of crypto-anarchy, tracing its origins from the cypherpunk movement to the rise of decentralized finance (DeFi) and its transformative effects on legal and economic systems. Central to crypto-anarchy is the belief in individual empowerment through privacy, financial autonomy, and decentralization, which allows users to bypass traditional intermediaries like banks. While these technologies offer increased freedom and financial inclusion, they also introduce significant risks such as money laundering, tax evasion, and the facilitation of illegal activities, posing challenges to current regulatory frameworks. The article examines the socio-economic implications of decentralization, including both the democratization of finance …

All ETDs from UAB
Low income, pregnant and postpartum women who misuse opioids in the state of Alabama face potentially life-threatening challenges when seeking substance misuse treatment and recovery support services. Our study used an explanatory sequential mixed-methods approach to explore gateways, barriers, and facilitators to opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment for pregnant and postpartum women in the state of Alabama. Surveys from 32 pregnant and postpartum individuals and in-depth interviews with 15 pregnant and postpartum individuals (four pregnant, four 0-6 months postpartum, four 7-12 months postpartum and three 13-18 months postpartum) were used to identify gateways, barriers, and facilitators to OUD treatment. Our …

Lived Experiences Of South Texas Police Officers After Completing Crisis Intervention Training, Lyna Yvette Campos
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative phenomenological study addressed the paucity of research on the experiences of police officers who have both completed crisis intervention team (CIT) training and interacted with people with mental illnesses (PwMI). To address the problem, I investigated police officers’ perceptions of PwMI and the pertinent CIT training information they found advantageous when interacting with a PwMI in crisis. Rogers’s protection motivation theory was the theoretical foundation for addressing the research questions. Interviews were conducted with 13 South Texas police officers who had completed CIT training. Data was collected through transcribed interviews and analyzed with an approach that included theme …

Subverting The Narrative: Reconnecting Opportunity Youth, Christy L. Fisher, Annie M. Dyer Gordon, Maya K. Head-Corliss, Afton E. Rodriguez
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
The purpose of this paper is to present recommendations in order to dismantle barriers to a population of students who have often been forgotten and left behind in the dominant structures and paradigms of K-12 education as well as higher education. Opportunity Youth are a population between the ages of 16 and 24 who are no longer in school and are also not currently employed. The majority of this population are People of Color which consequently begs the question: who is served and supported in the K-20 educational system as it currently stands, and who is not (Danziger & Ratner, …

Elementary School Leaders’ Perceptions Of Suspensions As A Disciplinary Approach With Students Of Color, A Whitney Jones
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this study was that students of color were being suspended with great frequency in elementary schools at the study site. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore perceptions of elementary school leaders regarding the use of suspensions as a disciplinary approach and how culturally responsive school leadership (CRSL) practices influence their decision-making processes with students of color in one southeastern U.S. school district. The conceptual framework used in this qualitative study included Bell’s critical race theory and Khalifa’s CRSL. For this basic qualitative study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine elementary school leaders …

Criminal Procedure - Probation, Arooj Khalid, Joseph E. Shields
Georgia State University Law Review
The Act includes various amendments to Georgia’s Judicial and Criminal Codes. Two changes are most notable. First, the Act permits the vacating of sentences for victims of human trafficking who were convicted under Article 3 of Chapter 8 of Title 42— Georgia’s first offender statute. Second, the Act provides enhanced privacy for these victims by restricting access to their criminal history relating to the offense.

Criminal Procedure - Bonds And Recognizances, Elizabeth Nisbet, Michelle A. Sergio
Georgia State University Law Review
The Act primarily functions to expand the list of serious offenses for which bail or surety is required by adding thirty new offenses, including misdemeanors that have a mandatory cash bail. It also requires many repeat offenders to post bail or surety. In addition, the Act restricts organizations, charities, or individuals to bail out a maximum of three people per year or require them to register as a bonding agency.

Courts - Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission, Amanda P. Healy, Caitlin Livingston
Georgia State University Law Review
The Act removes the requirement that the Georgia Supreme Court must review and adopt the standards and rules set forth for the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission. This removal effectively withdraws the approval power given to the Supreme Court by the original Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission Senate Bill (SB) 92. This Act was brought as the result of an administrative decision released by the Georgia Supreme Court on November 22, 2023, in which the Court asserted that it did not have the authority to approve the acts of the Commission.

Within-Day Diversity Change, Neighborhood Social Cohesion And Fear Of Crime, Chris Hess, Youngmin Yi, Gregory Sharp, Matt Hall
Within-Day Diversity Change, Neighborhood Social Cohesion And Fear Of Crime, Chris Hess, Youngmin Yi, Gregory Sharp, Matt Hall
Faculty Articles
Research on neighborhood social organization and crime typically conceptualizes neighborhood change on the order of decades, even though the local social contexts that individuals experience change daily through mobility for work, errands and recreation. In this study, the authors analyze data from the Seattle Neighborhoods and Crime Survey linked to the Census Transportation Planning Products to investigate whether within-day changes in neighborhood diversity are associated with an individual’s social cohesion and fear of crime. The authors find that individuals living in neighborhoods where diversity increases during the daytime tend to report more social cohesion and relatively less fear of crime. …

Transforming Constitutional Doctrine Through Mandatory Appeals From Three-Judge District Courts: The Warren And Burger Courts And Their Contemporary Lessons, Michael E. Solimine
Faculty Articles and Other Publications
Judicial interpretations of the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment underwent significant change, both expanding and retrenching in various ways, in Supreme Court doctrine during the Warren and Burger Courts. An underappreciated influence on the change is the method by which those cases reached the Court’s docket. A significant number of the cases reached the Court’s docket not by discretionary grants of writs of certiorari, as occurred in most other cases, but by mandatory appeals directly from three-judge district courts. This article makes several contributions regarding the important changes in these doctrines during the Warren Court …

Housing First: A Journey Towards Ending Homelessness In The U.S., Samantha Frey
Community Engagement Student Work
Housing First is a model developed to address homelessness founded in the belief that housing is a basic human right; therefore, it does not require “housing readiness” when determining eligibility for housing. This capstone is a qualitative case study that aims to provide insight into the successes and challenges of utilizing the Housing First model. Five interviews were conducted with organizations across the United States who are effectively implementing the Housing First model in their programming. Key implementation themes were found across the interviews including individualized and client driven supports, the importance of wrap-around services, community partnerships and cross-agency collaboration, …

Interference With The Democratic Process As Public Nuisance, Richard C. Boldt, Donald G. Gifford
Faculty Scholarship
This Article argues that the tort of public nuisance provides a vehicle for holding accountable those engaged in antidemocratic conduct. Recent history suggests that neither the criminal justice system nor Constitutional checks and balances are always up to the task. Following the 2020 election, some supporters of President Trump stormed the Capitol to prevent the counting of the electoral votes, tampered with election machines, and intimidated election workers and voters. Depending on the results of the 2024 election, criminal charges against Trump and some of his followers may be dismissed. The Senate failed to convict the President on articles of …
