Testing Revenge Pornography Using The General Strain Theory And Online Disinhibition Effect, Jesus Manuel Guardado Hernandez May 2025

Testing Revenge Pornography Using The General Strain Theory And Online Disinhibition Effect, Jesus Manuel Guardado Hernandez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The current study tests whether perceptions of general strain and online disinhibition effect could explain the intent to commit Revenge Pornography (RP). The data was collected using an online survey that was launched on a research platform called "Connect Cloud Research." After gathering the data, bivariate correlation and multiple regression analysis were necessary to establish the relationship and causality. Results were mixed, showing that there is a positive correlation with general strain and online disinhibition effect factors with the intent to commit RP, while multiple regression indicated that the independent variables did not predict the intent to commit RP. Unexpectedly, …

A Brighter Future Lies Ahead? The Impact Of Juvenile Records On Adults' Hiring Prospects, Morgan Rose Wagner May 2025

A Brighter Future Lies Ahead? The Impact Of Juvenile Records On Adults' Hiring Prospects, Morgan Rose Wagner

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Having a record can make obtaining employment difficult - while the stigma against criminal records is well established, the effects of a juvenile record on hiring outcomes is less clear. Juvenile records can often be sealed; however, when sealing is not done consistently or transparently, people with juvenile records face a difficult decision when applying for jobs - disclose a record that may be sealed, or omit information about a record that shows up on a background check? Experiment 1 used a hypothetical applicant paradigm with a sample of hiring managers to evaluate the impact of juvenile record disclosure and …

Can Shame And Guilt Be Used As A Deterrent For Drug Use And Drug Crime Recidivism?, Megan Elizabeth Pesek May 2025

Can Shame And Guilt Be Used As A Deterrent For Drug Use And Drug Crime Recidivism?, Megan Elizabeth Pesek

Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Honors Theses

Introduction: The present study focuses on how shame and guilt can be used as a deterrent for substance use and substance-related crime recidivism. This research is significant because of on-going alcohol and other drug crime recidivism in the United States. About 68% of drug-involved offenders have been found to recidivate within three years of their release from prison. Understanding how guilt and shame affect one's drug use and crime recidivism is important in recovery. This study was influenced by Braithwaite's theory of reintegrative shaming: using shame and guilt as the specific deterrent for recidivism. Methods: Based on this theory, I …

Gender Craze: Framing Policy Discrimination Against Transgender Students In K-12 Education, Quinette Rogers May 2025

Gender Craze: Framing Policy Discrimination Against Transgender Students In K-12 Education, Quinette Rogers

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Transgender youth in K-12 public education have been systematically marginalized through state-sanctioned violence and discriminatory policies, often portrayed as societal "boogeymen." They face exclusion and othering due to restrictive state legislation, such as bathroom bans, sports participation restrictions, and limited access to gender-affirming care. Current research lacks a comprehensive analysis of how state-level legislation affects transgender students. This study addresses that gap by employing qualitative thematic coding to examine the language, framing, and impact of state education policies on transgender students. By analyzing how these policies are framed around themes such as protecting family, safeguarding children, individual liberty, constitutional rights, …

Passive Dna Transfer To Fidget Blasters Stored In Cars, Rachel Chan

Student Theses

This study evaluated the amount of detectable DNA accumulated on clean plastic fidget blasters, used to simulate firearms, over a seven-day storage period inside a vehicle. Twelve volunteers were asked to place one fidget blaster each in the glove box and underneath the driver’s seat from behind. After the seven-day period, the volunteers returned the fidget blasters, donated a reference sample, and filled out a questionnaire. The grip, slide, and trigger were swabbed for DNA and extracted. The extracts were quantified to determine the concentration of human DNA, and if the samples met the PCR threshold to be genotyped. The …

All Dissertations

This study examined the impact of implementing restorative practices on the behavior and academic performance of students in a Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP), using Labeling Theory as the guiding framework. Key constructs from the theory, including primary deviance, secondary deviance, stigma, and the self-fulfilling prophecy, informed the analysis. Employing a quantitative, quasi-experimental design, the study analyzed archival data from student records, including disciplinary referrals, attendance, and STAAR performance in Algebra I, English I, and English II, across two academic years, 2021–2022 for Traditional DAEP and 2022–2023 for Restorative DAEP.

The findings revealed a statistically significant reduction in disciplinary referrals …

Deviant Trajectories Of Black Girls In Adolescent Romantic Relationships, Anna I. Fondren May 2025

Deviant Trajectories Of Black Girls In Adolescent Romantic Relationships, Anna I. Fondren

All Dissertations

This quantitative study explored whether involvement in adolescent romantic relationships among Black females influenced juvenile delinquency and later criminal behavior. While prior research has examined how peers, family, and romantic partners impact delinquency and substance use, the unique intersection of being both Black and female in this context remains underexplored. The study used data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), which follows U.S. adolescents from middle and high school into adulthood (ages 24–32). The dataset included variables related to peer and family relationships, romantic and sexual involvement, substance use, victimization, delinquency, and criminal behavior. …

School of Psychology

The global challenge of marine plastic pollution requires systemic change in our relationship with plastic. Thecurrent linear plastic economy must transition to a sustainable circular model, but is hindered by behaviouralchange difficulties, particularly in coastal regions facing resource limitations and a lack of research attention. This study investigates waste management (WM) behaviours in Java and Bali, Indonesia, through a householdsurvey (N = 506). By examining the roles of community attachment and environmental concern in WM behaviours, we contribute to the theoretical understanding of these concepts within a novel context. Our findingsreveal that community attachment and environmental concern predict WM behaviours, yet …

Necessitating Autonomy: Performing Black Womanhood., Krystal Chavonne Waller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the ways in which Black womanhood should autonomously be represented on the stage and/or the screen. By defining the theories of Black Feminist Thought, Black Performance, Trap Feminism and Sankofa, I create a praxis that provides Black femme performers with tools for authentic characterization. By acknowledging and respecting that Black women are not monolithic, this thesis also explores the evolution of theatrical representations of Black Womanhood—particularly U.S. Black womanhood from the late 19th century to modern day. Using historical narrative, analysis, acting techniques learned during my MFA program, and personal reflection, I advocate for Black women …

Black Childhood In Focus: Counter-Histories Of Black Urban Childhood In Preserve The Baltimore Uprising, A 21st Century Digital Participatory Archive., Ameena Basheera X Ruffin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the (mis)representation of Black urban childhood in the United States and proposes a framework for Black children’s inclusion in historical narratives. Black children have been excluded from constructs of childhood innocence, justifying violence against Black children and perpetuating anti-Black social hierarchies. This study builds on the work of Saidiya Hartman, advocating for a critical approach to studying, archiving, and understanding Black childhood through the lenses of region, race, age, and gender. Using the participatory digital archive Preserve the Baltimore Uprising as a case study, the research explores Black children’s presence and contributions during the 2015 Baltimore Uprising. …

From Prison To Progress: Evaluating The Impact Of Second Chance Act Grants On Recidivism, Alexandra Hall May 2025

From Prison To Progress: Evaluating The Impact Of Second Chance Act Grants On Recidivism, Alexandra Hall

Honors Theses

Recidivism in the United States is at an all-time high and significantly higher than in other developed nations. Past literature examines how conditions present in prisons and the criminal justice system affect recidivism and other outcomes of formerly incarcerated persons. Recognizing the need for reform, the Second Chance Act was passed in 2007, which aims to create or improve reentry programs by giving state, county, and tribal governments and nonprofit

organizations funding. Few studies have examined the effect of Second Chance Act grants,

though two studies published in 2016 and 2017 found that the grants generally decrease recidivism. This study …

Restorative Creep: How Child Exploitation Law Is Implementing Restorative Justice, Mimi Mays May 2025

Restorative Creep: How Child Exploitation Law Is Implementing Restorative Justice, Mimi Mays

University of Richmond Law Review

Victims of child pornography—or CSAM (child sexual abuse material) —have been described as having suffered harm “that is like ‘a thousand cuts.’” Enter restorative justice, tasked with healing. Over the past decade, the laws designed for the primary purpose of punishing CSAM offenders have adapted to better acknowledge the victims’ needs as well. This is a unique feat, since victims of those who traffic CSAM are different from victims of other kinds of offenses: for each given offense, the victim or victims might be plentiful, unidentifiable, distanced from their original victimization, or all of the above. Restorative justice practices, in …

The Long Road: Housing For The Marginalized Unhoused, Isabelle Ronette Fromm May 2025

The Long Road: Housing For The Marginalized Unhoused, Isabelle Ronette Fromm

Architecture Theses

This research explores the homelessness crisis in U.S. urban areas, emphasizing its disproportionate impact on marginalized groups, including African Americans, Latinos, veterans, and youth aging out of foster care. Key factors—poverty, housing shortages, mental health disparities, and systemic racism—worsen housing instability. Existing solutions often overlook these intersections. This study proposes flexible, sustainable housing models—specifically transitional and co-living designs—as viable solutions. Through historical analysis, policy reviews, and case studies, it investigates modular designs that offer safe, dignified, and accessible spaces, prioritizing economic feasibility and adaptability. Findings highlight the effectiveness of adaptive reuse strategies, promoting autonomy for vulnerable individuals. The concept of …

Butterfly Effects: Women And Criminal Law, Pavithra Rajendran

Washington International Law Journal

Through a comparative analysis of the criminal laws of Sri Lanka and the United States, this paper examines how Sri Lanka’s legal framework on sexual offenses often hinders women’s access to justice and reinforces systemic gender discrimination. Recognizing the structural constraints inherited from older common law traditions, it underscores the potential for reform through targeted, gradual changes, drawing on developments in modern common law in the United States and relevant international legal standards. The discussion unfolds in three parts: first, a feminist critique of exiting criminal laws in postcolonial; common law systems such as Sri Lanka’s; second, a comparative analysis …

Under The Eyes Of The Oppressors: Exploring The Spatial Oppression Of African Nova Scotians, Lorenze L. Cromwell May 2025

Under The Eyes Of The Oppressors: Exploring The Spatial Oppression Of African Nova Scotians, Lorenze L. Cromwell

Dalhousie Law Journal

Spatialization is a theoretical understanding of how space is used to enforce and replicate hierarchical power structures. Nova Scotia has used spatialized processes, such as enslavement, segregation, and panoptical power, to subjugate, oppress, and control African Nova Scotians for over 400 years. These practices of spatialization have been established and perpetuated by the law and legal mechanisms, creating a complex spatialized system of oppression against African Nova Scotians. This article defines spatialization, explores the historical and contemporary uses of spatialization, and analyzes the actuarial and symbolic effects created by spatialization. The author concludes by proposing remedial and reparative action that …

Rethinking Policies: Impact Of School To Prison Pipeline, Lyrik S. Hampshire

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This senior capstone research project examines the school-to-prison pipeline (STPP), a system of policies and practices from schools that disproportionately push minority high school students into the criminal justice system. This study investigates how school policies, including zero-tolerance and truancy, disciplinary practices, the lack of resources, school funding disparities, and systemic racism, contribute to this STPP pipeline. Through a literature review and survey responses from school staff, the result findings revealed that there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of the STPP among some educators and administrators, involving their role of biases and systemic issues. It is vital for educators …
